Now on DVD: Things Are Lookin UP

UP

This Disney/Pixar was a laugh riot in the theaters, and it should be no different in your living room.  Nobody brings a story to life like Pixar and this one is may be its most human story yet.  It’s the story of an old man trying to keep a promise he made to his dead wife, and the hijinks that ensue when he accidentally enlists the help of his friendly neighborhood boy scout.  If you don’t cry, you’ve gotta be some kind of zombie vampire from space.

The Ugly Truth

I don’t know about this one.  I couldn’t bring myself to sit through the obvious schlock-fest that is this movie, but that’s my problem.  From what I can tell, it’s your standard romcom wherein Gerard Butler is attempting to help the supremely overrated Katherine Heigl (I’d like to buy a vowel?) how to fall in love the right way, but the silly girl falls in love with him instead.  I just threw up in my shoe, but hey, to each his own.

Ink

When looking up the description for Ink, I came across this little nugget from IMDB: “Ink has been hailed as the new “it” movie and compared to cult classics Brazil, Donnie Darko, The Matrix, Dark City and Pan’s Labyrinth.”  So there you have it, no further description necessary, it’s cool so you must see it.

Now on DVD: A week for the action fans.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3

This new take on the original had a mash up that most people were dying to see. Travolta and Washington are amazing actors on their own and seeing them on opposite forces match wits was very impressive. The problem lies in the fact that the movie struggles to incorporate new technology and it does fall short of the intrigue and mind games of the original version. If we are not drawing comparisons though, this movie is entertaining and it is great to see the interaction between these two big names.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

This movie was advertised as a great summer Blockbuster and it fulfilled that requirement. It was action-packed, slightly cheesy and the plot was almost completely predictable, but above all it was entertaining and that is all that is really required of a summer Blockbuster. The movie differs greatly from the cartoon and the comic and for that reason it was probably a small disappointment to die hard fans. If you are looking for a detailed plot and thrilling dialogue, this movie is not going to impress you but for a brief escape full of action and explosions it is great.

Aliens in the Attic

This was one movie that I thought looked completely terrible in previews and it seems (at least from box office returns) that many people did agree with me. But for those with kids it is a very rentable movie that will keep them entertained for a special movie night. The movie is about aliens landing and trying to attack a family and the family’s attempts to fight back. Simple and filled with a few comedic moments that will be sure to please children.

This is also a week for Christmas movie re-releases so here are just a couple of my favorites out of the multitude that will be hitting the shelves this week.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (Ultimate Collector’s Edition)

Now I have not been a fan of all the Lampoon Vacation movies because usually they are over the top, completely cheesy and go way too far. This one, on the other hand is viewed together with my entire family at least once during the holiday season, and finally they have released with everything you could possibly want to go with it.

White Christmas (Anniversary Edition)

I am a huge fan of the old fashioned musicals because they have a charm and emotion that is rarely captured on the screen anymore. This movie is one of my favorites because it has a great story and the usual plot twist and that amazing heartwarming ending. This new edition has a surprisingly large amount of extras including backstage stories and a commentary by Rosemary Clooney.

New Release on DVD: There’s a chill in the air!

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

The Ice Age series hits dvd once again and this time our frozen friends are facing not a meltdown but the dinosaurs themselves. This cute and witty movie may not have been as good as its predecessors but it is still and all around good film to watch with the family.

Orphan

This creepy adopted child wrecks havoc on her family in this horror flick. Though it may not have been the best horror ever made it certainly had some big scares and a bit of originality thrown in, even though the evil child plot has nearly be done to death. So sit back and have a good scare, though you might want to leave the lights on while watching this one.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

This movie tells the story of the Cylons and their desire to get revenge on the humans who enslaved them. It really takes on the story of the Cylons which was largely skipped over in the series. That said it tries to do too much with too little and it may be a disappointment to true BattleStar Gallatica fans.

Night of the Creeps

This classic, cheesy yet wonderful 80s horror is finally being released on dvd and Blu-Ray. This has all the cheesy fun of a campy sci-fi horror but done as good as it can possibly be. The movie starts off about a couple in 1959 who see a meteor crash to earth. The boy accidentally swallows a space slug that shoots out from the meteor. Years later the corpse of the boy is discovered by two college freshman and once the body gets warmed up it comes to life!

New Releases on DVD: Transformers and Vampires, plus a little special edition treatment

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

If you are a transformers fan, then you probably knew this movie was coming out, if you’re not, well you probably should have known that it was coming out anyway. This is one movie that has people adamantly either love or hate, which makes it perfect to rent or even buy. This is because you won’t feel as jipped if you hate and if you love it, well you got to see it and love it for cheap. This movie is the second in the transformers series and while the special effects are just as good, the plot leaves much to be desired. But check it out because it is a good movie in it’s own right.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Those Aren’t Pillows Edition)

One of the best comedies ever written gets the special edition treatment. This version comes with the full movie (watching it on TV or with most dvds will have some scenes cut out) as well as some fun bonus features. The special features include: A Tribute to John Candy, The Story of Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and John Hughes for Adults. While it may not come packed with everything you would expect from a Special Edition it is a great addition to your collection and a great version to buy if you have yet to add this movie to your collection.

Blood: The Last Vampire

This action packed gory flick comes to you from the producer of Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This movie is based loosely on the anime of the same name and tells the story of Saya. Saya works for the Council, a secret organization that works to kill all of the vampires. Saya is soon sent to an American military base where it seems that people have been dying from vampires, while there it seems that Saya is on the trail for the most powerful vampire of all. This movie is action packed and great for anyone who is into kung-fu or anime but otherwise you might start to notice that the plot is a little thin and a tad confusing.

The Tournament

With as much time as this movie spend in production you would expect to have something truly great. Well it might not measure up to classic standards but it is a high energy, action packed bloodfest that should appease any fan. Following the tradition set by Battle Royale this movie features a world where once every seven years, 30 of the world’s top assassins compete to be the last one standing. The entire city in their battleground and the high stakes gamblers watch from closed circuit TV. If you really want to see something filled with action and gore, this is the movie for you.

New releases on DVD: Propsals and Horror

The Proposal

This movie starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in which Sandra Bullock claims that they two are getting married so that she can have U.S. citizenship and not be deported to Canada. The only problem is that the two have never gotten along and when he brings her home to his family, she starts to have the one thing she has always wanted. This may have been a chick flick but it was a great chick flick, with comedy and fun and of course all the sap that makes a good chick flick. Grab a few girlfriends or may be even that special someone and grab this movie, you won’t regret

Drag Me to Hell

It is hard to be a fan of horror when the scares and the plotlines continue to be recycled just at the excuse of creating more gore. The movie tells about a loan officer who gets cursed by a gypsy for refusing to extend her home loan. Never mind the fact that she cannot be a gypsy if she owns her own home (goes against the whole traveling thing) but this gypsy curses the poor woman with being tormented by a demon before being dragged to Hell. The movie is filled with gore and shocking moments that are typical of this Evil Dead director, this is definitely not a movie for the squeamish. It may be one of the highest rated horrors on RottenTomatoes but this one is just a bit much for me.

Land of the Lost

You probably remember the previews for this one and more than likely decided not to see it in theaters. Well now is not the time to second guess your judgment and decide to rent it. The movie is not for kids, or at least not as much as its television inspiration was and it definitely does not flow very well. It seems like this movie was just an excuse to put together a bunch of random sketches that may or may not fit together as a story. You may feel like you’re watching a themed and poorly done Saturday Night Live episode by the end of it.

Every Little Step

This movie is probably one you have not heard of but it has been gaining plenty of attention at film festivals. It is perfect if you like musicals and Broadway as this documentary shows you behind the scenes of what it is like to perform in these iconic shows. You’ll get to get the background on the making of A Chorus Line both back in 1974 when it was first written and performed and for the 2005 revival. See how the changing world has changed how the show is created and performed from start to finish. This is a very well done and revealing documentary, and a must see for fans of the musical genre.

New on DVD: Murphy uses his Imagination and Black goes back…way back.

Imagine That

Murphy stars in this family film that may sell his comedic talents short and hand out the same moral that many better family films have come to preach. In this movie Murphy plays a busy father who spends more time working than with his young daughter. All that changes when he loses confidence and drive in work and things start to go downhill. But his salvation is found in his daughter’s imaginary world where he finally has the chance to discover himself and find the success and happiness he always wanted. While the idea of choosing family over work is a good one, there are a number of movies that do a better job of stressing that point than this. Cute and sweet but not very memorable.

Year One

This movie stars Jack Black and Michael Cera in the sort of run of the mill slapstick comedy we’ve come to expect. In this one they are a pair of lazy (big surprise) hunter gathers who are kicked out from their tribe (yet another suprise) and go on an epic adventure through the ancient world (wonders never cease). From this point you can pretty much figure out the rest of the plot yourself, they find themselves in the perfect position to rescue the beautiful maiden and regain the respect of their tribe. Critics were almost unanimous in their hatred of this film, but if you are willing to, rent it and give it a try.

Anvil: The Story of Anvil

If you are in the mood for something funny and incredibly brilliant then this is the movie you should find. With a 98% fresh rating on rotten tomatoes and some of the highest praise you’ll see critics give this year, this film is not to be missed. The film is a documentary that follows the story of Anvil, a heavy metal band that influenced rock greats like Metallica, Guns N’ Roses and Anthrax, but never got their own turn. This film follows the two men on tour as they continue to follow their dream of rock stardom while dealing with an inept manager, stingy club owners and audiences too small to fill a closet much less an arena. Watch and see this two aging men who have been friends their entire lives continue to chase the dream in one of the most endearing and humorous movies you’ll see this year.

New on DVD: “Away” with “Monsters” versus Aniston

Away We Go

This movie you may not have heard of, but you really should have. It is not your usual romantic comedy in that the plot isn’t tired, the lines are not cheesy and the ending may actually catch you just a little bit off guard. In this beautiful movie the couple is already married and they are expecting their first child, the only thing that is not going right for them is that they have no idea where to live. So the couple starts out on a trek to visit places around the country where they have friends or relatives. Starring Mara Rudolph and John Krasinski, this movie has great talent in both acting, writing and directing, so check it out.

Monsters vs. Aliens

This kids movie had everything necessary to make it a Blockbuster film, a great cast, cute story and enough witty one-liners to appease the parents. This movie is based on a popular comic book series and features monsters found on Earth and contained by the government, fighting against invading aliens. The movie has an all-star cast with Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Steven Colbert, Seth Rogen and Hugh Laurie all lending their voices to the film. The movie is currently the 3rd highest grossing animated film of 2009.

Management

This movie stars Steve Zahn and Jennifer Aniston and it’s plot might sound a tad bit familiar. After a one-night stand, a motel manager (Steve Zahn) takes to the road to follow the art dealer (Jennifer Aniston) across the country. If this sounds just a little like All About Steve you would be right except this version does not have quite as many pitfalls. Aniston and Zahn pull off amazing performances and the film delivers the laughs that All About Steve just makes overly awkward. In the end the characters are likable and redeemable, which makes this all in all a very good romantic comedy to watch.

Shrink

This movie stars Kevin Spacey and he is the shining light in this film. Spacey plays Henry Carter, a shrink who begins to rely on booze and drugs to help him get through a personal tragedy. His family and friends attempt an intervention which fails and so Henry’s psychiatrist father sets him up with a patient who has gone through a similiar tragedy. Henry sees through the plan but takes the patient anyway, and despite himself the plan actually starts to work.

New on DVD: Observe Ghosts and Tulpan

Observe and Report

This movie when I first saw the previews seemed like a horrible version of Paul Blart: Mall Cop and when I ended up watching it with my brother, I realized that my initial assumption about the movie was correct. Despite Family Guy’s commentary that Seth Rogen makes everything funnier I have to admit that the laughs were bigger and more genuine with Paul Blart: Mall Cop. The movie also has a sweet and gooey center that really hits home. In Observe and Report, Ronnie Barnhardt tries to beat out a hardened detective in order to catch a flasher that has been terrorizing the mall. The plot line of an over ambitious mall cop falls short of fun and funny but might appeal to the teenage crowd.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

The latest Matthew McConaughey film takes a new spin on everyone’s favorite Christmas tale A Christmas Carol.  In this movie McConaughey plays a womanizer who has long since lost the only woman who captured his heart. When the pair reconnect at a wedding, McConaughey is taken on a journey though this romantic past, present and future in order to realise the love he was always meant to have. While most critics found the movie lacking any real orginality, it does have a few laughs and has that sickeningly sweet feeling that most women want from their chick flicks. But you may have a hard time growing to like many of the show’s characters.

Tulpan

This is one movie that you probably have not heard about but it presents a rather unique and touching story. Asa has just completed his naval service and is ready to return to the countryside and become a shepard and find a wife. The obvious choice for a bride is Tulpan, the daughter of a nearby sherparding family, but the problem is that she is not attracted to Asa because he has big ears. So will he be able to gain a bride and become a shepard or will he remain a lowly bachelor? This movie has been renowned by critics everywhere as a beautifully touching and monumental movie, even gaining a fresh rating of 98% on RottenTomatoes. Don’t miss this one.

New on DVD: Wolverine and Rembrandt

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

This movie caused a stir for angering die hard Wolverine fans and delighting female fans who loved the image of Hugh Jackman running around naked. Whether you are a fan of the comic series or just a fan of the X-Men movies, this is a must see. This movie ventures into the reasons why Logan agreed to have his body fused with adamantium. If you have any questions about why Wolverine is the way he is, this is a movie you should watch.

Nightwatching

This film explores the life of Rembrandt and the controversy concerning his painting of The Nightwatch. Rembrandt is commissed to do a painting of the Amsterdam Musketeer Militia and in doing so tries to expose the murder conspiracy brewing within the militia. This amazing film is beautifully done and sheds new light into the life of Rembrandt that many never discover.

Blood & Bone

This movie delves into the underground world of streetfighting as a drifter played by Michael Jai White. This action packed martial arts film is a must see for fans of the genre. This drifter starts to get in over his head as he takes on the criminal underworld.

Grace

This chilling movie features a parent’s worst nightmare as a pregnant mother’s child is killed during a tragic accident. Despite the findings of doctors the mother insists on carrying the stillborn child to term. When the tiny corpse is finally birthed, the mother wills the child back to life. But baby Grace is not your normal child and it is not long before her mother is forced to make a series of terrible sacrifices in order to keep her alive.

New on DVD: Little else but a resurgence of Cuba Gooding Jr.

This week there are basically no new movies coming out on dvd, it seem to be a week for television, but there are one or two movies being released on dvd that are worth mentioning.

Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story

This movie stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and focuses on the story of Ben Carson. Ben as a child grew up in poverty and predjudice and even though his grades were not perfect and he had a temper, his mother refused to lose faith in him. Determined to give her son everything she never had, she encourages him to grow not only his imagination but his own faith in himself, which in the end leads Ben to become one of the world’s leading neurosurgeons. This movie has proven to be an inspiration to everyone who watches it, young and old, and it will certainly be the same for you.

Universal Horror: Classic Movie Archive

My love of early horror movies is one that is unmatched and every Halloween they find themselves coming out of the woodwork to undoubtedly bore my party guests, but this collection has some of the best 1940s horror movies ever made. The set includes The Black Cat (1941), Man Made Monster (1941), Horror Island (1941), Night Monster (1942), and Captive Wild Women (1942). Perhaps the only thing disappointing about this collection is that its release is limited to Best Buy which means once they are gone, they are gone. So get your set now before the price shoots up in a few months.

Love & Pain & The Whole Damn Thing

While it may seem that this week is nothing but old classic movies, that should never be considered a bad thing, because classic movies are often better acted with better scripts than the movies we see today. Thsi movie tells the two of two very mismatched lovers who meet in Spain and through a series of hilarious misadventures begin to fall in love. The pair have to get over their clashing personalities and the current conventions in order to finally reach happiness together.
