In Turning Red, Mei and her mother, Ming, are sometimes at odds as Mei goes through girlhood. Domee included this in the movie to reflect the experiences of Asian and immigrant children.
“I think, especially for immigrant kids, Asian kids, and for Mei in the movie, I think she has to come to realize that there is no perfect relationship with your parents, that it is always going to be messy,” Domee said in her NBC News interview.
She was also quoted as having said in a press conference that the filmmakers chose to “explore the nuances of Asian parent-child relationship in dealing with change, and of intergenerational conflict and how it can shape who we become.”
Top Netflix executive Srishti Behl Arya rubbished reports of the streaming service meeting the representatives of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to restrict “anti national” and “anti-Hindu” content on shows from the streaming platform.
There were reports that the RSS, the ideological fountainhead of the ruling BJP, have been holding informal meetings with Netflix, Amazon and other digital platforms to monitor content critical of the government.
Asked about the same, Arya, who is Director, International Original Film, India, Netflix, dubbed the story “fake news“.
“It’s not a true story. There was no meeting at all. It’s a fake news,” she told reporters on Sunday evening.
Arya was speaking at the panel discussion “Artistic Freedom: Mapping Out The Entertainment Story” at the Jio MAMI 21st Mumbai Film Festival with Star.
Aparna Purohit, head of India Originals of Amazon Prime, singer Sona Mohapatra and actor Sobhita Dhulipala were also a part of the panel.
There were also reports that the government is keen on censoring digital content.
Asked if the scenario was scary, Purohit said, “We will continue to comply with the law of the land.”
Srishti said unlike storytelling, the law of the land is not subjective.
“The law is the law. It’s not like, ‘I don’t like you, so I’m going to stab you.’ Whatever is permitted by the law, we would go into those spaces and the rest is all about the stories that creators want to tell.
Sobhita, who featured in Amazon’s critically-acclaimed series
Made in Heaven , said every time a voice is suppressed, many more come out in the open against the injustice.
“The more variety of stories there will be addressing it in different ways. Back in the days in those typical Indian films people didn’t show men and women in their intimate moments, so it would come out in songs or some cheesy moments because they couldn’t address it in a normal way.
“Maybe political statements will be made but in a subtler, simpler, maybe more clever ways, that’s not conventionally offensive. Anurag Kashyap’s work has such political undertones but it’s not really in your face, it leaves people thinking,” she added.
When Sidney Lumet made Network more than four decades back, he used an over-the-top, satirical narrative to point fingers at visual media. It is a testimony to how much media standards have fallen, that some of the over-the-top elements in that movie have become normalised in television studios in latter years.
In Naradan, Aashiq Abu hardly ever employs satire. The script by Unni R. is as direct as it can get, drawing on recent happenings from the political and media landscape in the State as well as outside, to tell the compelling story of the rise of an unethical media anchor. When we first see Chandraprakash (Tovino Thomas), he is already the star anchor of a news channel, but other than hunger to stay ahead of the competition, he is not yet sullied by other vices.
But a drop in the ratings, following a breaking story from Pradeep John (Sharafudheen), the anchor of a smaller rival channel, becomes a spark that kindles the ugly side of Chandraprakash. The film follows his transformation to a rich, ruthless channel boss, who hobnobs with shady elements and would go to any extent to maintain his ratings, and to crush even the feeblest of voices that question him.
It is much to Tovino Thomas’s credit that he is ready to take up characters that are not likeable, like he did in Kala. Chandraprakash is even repulsive at many points. His hectoring style of anchoring, cutting off panelists midway and misinterpreting their words to serve his purpose, is reminiscent of many contemporary anchors. It is the transformation in Chandraprakash’s character which becomes one of the high points of the film. This all-round transformation is especially evident in how he puts in place a ‘subordinate’ who used to be his close friend not so long back.
Aashiq Abu uses Naradan to invert the power equations of the newsroom studio, to put on trial the style of journalism promoted by sections of the visual media in recent years. The script points at the inherent voyeurism, the moral judgements and the conservative mindsets of the self-anointed judges in newsrooms. Though many of the scenes are set around tiring news debates and voyeuristic reporting, it makes for engaging drama in the film. Some parts, especially that of a rapper confronting the anchor in a live video, seems to have been drawn from happenings in the national media, just like a part of the anchor’s character.
A good part of the hour leading up to the climax has been structured as a court-room drama, with some solid performances from Indrans, as the judge who is not easily swayed, and from Anna Ben, as a lawyer. Although the arguments justifying media gags in some cases can be misused by some elements, as has happened in recent years, the court arguments also raise valid questions on what constitutes public interest journalism. The two rap songs add to the general idea and spirit of the film.
Naradan is a stinging critique of the rot that has taken over at least a section of the visual media, which revolves almost completely around ratings.

Netflix has teamed up with video game publisher Take-Two to create a BioShock film.
The news was announced on Tuesday via the official Netflix Geeked Twitter account.
“Netflix, 2K and Take-Two Interactive are partnering to produce a film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BioShock,” it said.
While no further details about the project were shared, the tweet was accompanied by a quote from BioShock antagonist Andrew Ryan, and imagery of the iconic Big Daddy character and the underwater setting of Rapture.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the partnership deal had been in the works for close to a year.
A writer or filmmaker have yet to be attached to the project, which will see Vertigo Entertainment and Take-Two serve as producers.

BioShock released in 2007 and the game quickly attracted the interest of Hollywood, with The Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski originally attached to helm a feature film based on the IP.
The project, which would subsequently see 28 Weeks Later filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo lined up to direct, was reportedly cancelled because studios were unwilling to invest in an R-rated version of the tale.
In a recent Arcade Attack interview, BioShock creator Ken Levine claimed Take-Two ultimately granted him permission to veto the proposed movie, which he “felt wasn’t necessarily going in the right direction” before the plug was pulled.
Levine said the movie studios had “a story they wanted to tell that wasn’t necessarily the story of BioShock”. They liked the visuals of the world but didn’t buy into the story and the characters to the same degree.
He also said he once had a meeting with a famous and “very talented” filmmaker whose first question was whether the movie would have to be set underwater.
Will a BioShock movie ever get made, Levine was asked? “I don’t know. I hope if it ever gets made it’s… I don’t want to see it get made unless it’s good and whether it’s going to make the people who played the game feel like the things they loved in it are intact.”
Publisher 2K announced in December 2019 that work had begun on a new entry in the BioShock franchise and that it would be in development “for the next several years”.
While the first two games in the series took place in the underwater city of Rapture and the third in the floating city of Columbia, the fourth will reportedly be set during the 1960s in a fictional Antarctic city and is said to be targeting a 2022 release.
