‘Never whisper in the presence of wrong’ is a quote attributed to Dr Bernard Lown, the founder president of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) from 1980 to 1993, who said, “The ticking of numerous time bombs demands critical re-examination of the existing world order. The new way of thinking must be a final awakening to our common origins, to our shared problems as well as to our common fate. If we all are to prevail, we must never delegate in the presence of challenge and never whisper in the presence of wrong”.

Lown said it in relation to the nuclear weapons, but it is true for several other situations as well. Any type of violence is a cause of concern as it causes both physical and mental trauma.

Violence is not just a law and order problem but an issue of public health importance. The world saw catastrophic impact on human health in 1945 when the US dropped atom bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Second World War led to loss of over 50 million lives and left over 90 million wounded. The USSR alone lost 18 million people.

The conflicts have not stopped thereafter. Dr. Barry S Levy, Adjunct Professor of Public Health, Tufts University School of Medicine in a presentation at an event organized by the IPPNW on February 19, 2022 pointed out that the studies have revealed that since 1990-2017, there have occurred 50000 direct deaths annually as a result of armed conflicts while the indirect deaths have been more than one million.

Many a times the conflicts are engineered by forces bent on using divisive ideology to spread hared in the society. They incite violence while harping on nostalgia of past glory and hyper-nationalism. In recent years, pushing society into violence has become a tool for some to remain in power.

Ethnic strife between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes was the cause of death of nearly 800,000 people in Rwanda. Such was the extent of the hatred that in many cases, husbands killed their wives who belonged to the other tribe.

Nearly 2.5 million Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims were killed in the communal violence following partition of India in 1947, causing a serious humanitarian crisis. The Taliban’s religious fundamentalism is a danger to the society. We don’t know how the Russia-Ukraine conflict will pan out.

Fearing a catastrophic situation in our country due to on-going acts of some bigots, supported at many places with overt or covert support of the State machinery, saner elements have expressed anguish at the events. Numerous videos have been circulating on social media condemning moves by the ‘Hindutva’ brigade to target minorities, especially Muslims, in many places. They have been appealing to the Prime Minister to break his silence on these incidents.

The right wing today seems to be faithfully carrying forward the agenda put forth by the second Sarsanghchalak (chief) of the RSS, MS Golwalkar who in his book ‘We, or Our Nationhood Defined’ clearly states that whenever they come to power, first of all hand over government property, State land and forests to 2-3 trusted rich people of the country. Make 95% people beggars and after that power will not be lost for seven generations, he said.

He also said that he was ready to be enslaved by the British for his entire life but did not want freedom which gave equal rights to Dalits, backward classes and Muslims.

Under the circumstances, it would be naïve for PM Modi to heed appeals to take such elements to task.

It is time to stand up and fight against this kind of ideology that splits the social fabric. This is not the time to be silent, but to speak up, always keeping in mind the quote: ‘Never whisper in the presence of wrong’.

This type of Hindu Rashtra can also adopt some of the other discriminatory aspects against its religious minorities that states like Pakistan have chosen. For instance, non-Muslims vote in separate electorates, and the apostatised community of Ahmadis cannot call themselves Muslims and have no religious freedom. The BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has proposed that Muslims be disenfranchised, meaning lose their right to vote.

Germany in the 1930s adopted a set of laws that prevented inter-marriage between communities. In India, after 2018, seven BJP states have passed laws that also criminalise marriage between Muslims and Hindus. German laws excluded Jews from citizenship, and India has of course passed the CAA excluding Muslims, and the home minister has promised the NRC, which also targets what he calls ‘termites’.

Many of the things that India has done especially since 2019, with targeted laws and policy on namaz, hijab, beef, bulldozer, talaq and so on would also be something that we can see in an exclusionary Hindu Rashtra.

So, the question is, if we have already excluded Muslims from political office by default, and if we are already harassing them daily through laws, like Nazi Germany did and like Pakistan did, then why do we need a Hindu Rashtra or a change from the present set of laws?

My book concluded that we did not. That the present Constitution and laws give Hindus enough freedom to apply discrimination against non-Hindus legally, while still pretending to be pluralist, democratic and secular. There appears to be no particular advantage or benefit that we get in officially changing our constitutional and legal state from secular to Hindu Rashtra.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, the Academy Award-winners behind “Good Will Hunting,” are teaming up on a movie about Nike’s efforts to sign Michael Jordan to a sneaker deal, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Former Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, who was featured in the 2015 ESPN 30 for 30 “Sole Man,” and Nike co-founder Phil Knight will be the central characters of the movie.

According to reports, Damon will portray Vaccaro, and Affleck will play Knight. Affleck and Damon won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Good Will Hunting” and the two collaborated on the screenplay for and starred in 2021’s “The Last Duel.” Affleck, who will direct the film, also won an Academy Award for Best Picture as a producer for “Argo.”

The movie will focus on Nike’s effort to sign Jordan in 1984 when Jordan was entering the NBA. Coming out of North Carolina, Jordan was the No. 3 overall pick of the 1984 NBA draft, and Vaccaro managed to do the impossible for what was, at the time, a minor shoe company and keep Jordan away from Adidas, Reebok and Converse. By doing so, Vaccaro helped transform Nike, the relationship between an athlete and a brand, and the sneaker industry as a whole.

“Even though I never envisioned myself wearing the (Nike) shoe, the creativity that it provided to me and the education of what this is all about — what I wear on my feet and how it enhances my athletic ability — I’m happy with the choice,” Jordan said in 2004.

In 2021, Yahoo! Finance reported that Jordan Brand, an offshoot of Nike, did $5 billion in sales and, in 2020, Forbes estimated that Nike has paid Jordan an estimated $1.3 billion since 1984.

Affleck and Damon are coming in at the genesis of all that.

Vaccaro, who is now 82 years old, helped to make the sneaker industry what it is today by signing players like Jordan and Kobe Bryant to multi-million dollar shoe deals with Nike.

“I don’t think people understood how my career evolved. I wanted the public to know how sneaker marketing started. For better or worse, this is who I am,” Vaccaro told ESPN about “Sole Man” in 2015. “I don’t think people understood how my relationships with coaches evolved and how I got involved with Nike. This is how Jordan happened, this is how Kobe happened.”

“Sole Man” was co-directed by Jon Weinbach, who is president of Skydance Sports. Weinbach was also a producer of the Emmy-winning ESPN series “The Last Dance,” which he did with Mandalay Pictures chairman Peter Guber, who will produce the upcoming movie. Now they’ll team up again for another part of the Jordan story.

“They say he sent 100 Krauts to meet their maker.” Dark Sky Films has released an official US trailer for the Russian WWII action thriller Red Ghost: Nazi Hunter, formerly known as simply The Red Ghost. This opened in Russia last year and is hitting VOD in the US soon. December 30, 1941. In Vyazma a small group of Soviet soldiers are trying to return to their comrades. They are suddenly caught in an unequal battle with a special unit of the Wehrmacht. None of these brave soldiers was born a hero but they became heroes. And were helped in their battle by the Red Ghost. The myth of the “Red Ghost” is about a lone hero who picks off Nazi soldiers one by one. He seems to be able to vanish almost magically into the forests and even to come back from the dead. Starring Aleksey Shevchenkov, Vladimir Gostyukhin, Yuriy Borisov, Polina Chernyshyova, Wolfgang Cerny, and Michael Gor. Another intense jingoistic war movie from Russia – packed with bloody action galore. The English dubbing they put in this trailer is awful – you’ve been warned.

Juliette Binoche is a French Journalist in ‘Between Two Worlds’ Trailer

“Make the invisible visible.” Madman Films in Australia has released their official trailer for Between Two Worlds, a French drama from writer / filmmaker Emmanuel Carrère. This premiered last year at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors’ Fortnight section, and is opening sometime later this year. It is based on French journalist Florence Aubenas’s bestselling non-fiction work Le Quai de Ouistreham, investigating rising precarity in French society through her experiences in the northern port city of Caen. The original French title is Ouistreham in reference to this location. Juliette Binoche stars as Winckler, who goes to live in northern France to research for her new book on the subject of job insecurity by working in various low end cleaning jobs. The cast includes a group of authentic unknown actors, including Hélène Lambert, Louise Pociecka, Steve Papagiannis, Aude Ruyter. The film looks a bit like a Ken Loach drama but made in France, a social realist look at the honest struggles of low income workers. Definitely worth a watch.

Marianne Winckler (Juliette Binoche), a well-known author, goes to live in northern France to research for her new book on the subject of job insecurity. Without revealing her true identity, she gets hired as a cleaner, working with a group of other women. In this new role, she experiences financial instability and social invisibility first-hand. But she also discovers mutual assistance and solidarity, strong bonds shared by these behind-the-scenes working women. Between Two Worlds, also known as Ouistreham (referencing Le Quai de Ouistreham) in French, is directed by French writer / filmmaker Emmanuel Carrère, making his second feature after The Moustache previously, as well as lots of writing gigs. The screenplay is written by Emmanuel Carrère and Hélène Devynck, adapted from Florence Aubenas’ novel. This initially premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival last year, playing in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar. It already opened in France earlier this year, and opens in Australia soon. Prince’s Sign o’ the Times is returning to the big screen via Alamo Drafthouse this spring. The theater chain has announced that a 4K restored edition of the 1987 concert film will appear for a limited run in theaters nationwide beginning Friday, April 1.

Shot mostly at Prince’s famed Paisley Park studios, the Sign o’ the Times film captures the band that toured in support of the record that year. It had a short original run and, like much of Prince’s material, had not always been easily accessible online. Sign o’ the Times got a “super deluxe” reissue in 2020, which included previously unreleased material from the late artist’s archives.

Two Awesome Promo Spots for ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’

“Accessing all their memories and skills – it’s called Verse-jumping.” Oh hell yes! A24 has revealed two new promo spots for Everything Everywhere All At Once, the next new film from the filmmakers known as “The Daniels” – who rocked their way to the big screen with the wacky Daniel Radcliffe film Swiss Army Knife a few years ago. This just premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival to glowing reviews calling it “exhilarating.” Directed by Daniel Kwan Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as Daniels, the film is about an aging Chinese immigrant who just wants to finish her taxes. She ends up swept into an insane adventure, where she alone can save the world by exploring other universes connecting with the lives she could have led. Michelle Yeoh stars, with Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., James Hong, and Jamie Lee Curtis. This is going to be so awesome!! I’ve got a feeling it’ll be on my Top 10 this year. All the great reviews so far make me even more excited. If you need any convincing, fire up these spots.

Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as Daniels, the film is a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action adventure about an exhausted Chinese-American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who just can’t seem to finish her taxes. Everything Everywhere All at Once is co-directed and co-written by the filmmakers Daniel Kwan (also of Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia) Daniel Scheinert (also of The Death of Dick Long), also known as “The Daniels”, both directors of the film Swiss Army Man previously, as well as numerous other music videos. It’s produced by Mike Larocca, Anthony Russo Joe Russo, Jonathan Wang, and The Daniels. This recently premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival playing on Opening Day earlier this month. (CNN)Part “Hamlet,” part “Conan the Barbarian” and a whole lot of “Vikings,” “The Northman” is a gorgeously shot exercise in visceral thrills that goes heavy on atmospherics and very, very light on story. Director/co-writer Robert Eggers (“The Lighthouse”) has sought to make the definitive Viking movie, and while the film issues a guttural cry for theatrical viewing, it is built around such a basic revenge plot as to blunt those simple charms.
