In Theaters Now: Get Ready to Scream

The Final Destination

Only two major releases this week and they’re both geared toward making you scream

The Final Destination

The most recent in the series that has garnered much popular attention for it’s unusually unique ways of killing people, has taken the next big step and come out 3D. I cannot help but wonder if the 3D effects will help or hurt the overall scare factor. This highly successful series has for the first time completely refused any pre-screenings, and this includes for critics. This could imply that Warner Brothers is not entirely confident about the latest addition to the Blockbuster series or that they simply want to keep the mystery alive. The movie follows the same premise we’re expecting, with the lead character, Nick, saving all of his friends from death and then watching as they all meet grisly ends anyway.

Halloween II

This feature directed by Rob Zombie, also went the route of shutting out critics which means that movie reviewers had very little to keep them busy this week. Halloween II promises to have the same feel and scare factor as the original with Michael Myers stalking yet another victim, this time through a hospital. Hopefully we see this movie creating a return toward what made the original 1978 Halloween great. More suspense and actual scares than simply nudity and gore.

Still in Theaters

For those of you who don’t want to be scared, check out these movies.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

Beautiful and heart-wrenching this is not to be missed. With amazing performances all around and a very well done story, there is little to complain about with this one.

Shorts

A wonderfully funny and adorable kids movie that really seems to understand kids and people in general. This is a fun and entertaining movie for everyone.

Weekend Box Office: Once again Tarantino does not disappoint.

Inglourious Basterds

This weekend’s box office has Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds suppressing not only Nazis but the competition as well. This witty revenge flick with Brad Pitt managed to steal District 9‘s thunder with over $37 million for the weekend. District 9 takes the number two slot and G.I.Joe takes third. This shows that as the summer begins to cool down it is the action flicks that are turning up the heat in the box office. Chick flicks take the fourth and fifth slots, with the Time Traveler’s Wife and Julie & Julia respectively. Kids were completely knocked out of the top five with Shorts taking the number six slot, G-Force taking 7th and Harry Potter is already down to 8th. Post Grad had a disappointing opening weekend, barely coming in at number 10.

In Theaters Now: A “short” movie for everyone.

Shorts

Shorts

Finally a children’s movie that everyone can enjoy. Shorts has a story and script that is cute, charming and overwhelmingly funny enough to suit anyone. This movie seems to get kids completely and even reminds parents of what it is like to be a kid. The story follows that an 11 year old boy finds a mysterious magical rock with the power to grant wishes, but as can be expected once word gets out, both kids and adults are willing to do anything for the stone. Adults have the added benefit of being able to appreciate a great cast with Jon Cryer and William H. Macy giving great performances.

Inglourious Basterds

This is a must seen for any Quentin Tarantino fan, as he wishes for this movie to be considered his masterpiece and has said that it is the best writing he has ever done. This holocaust movie follows two story lines each with people seeking revenge against the Nazis. While one should never make light of such an event, when put against the long string of depressing Holocaust films, this complete revenge fantasy is a nice break from the somber. Then of course you have Brad Pitt giving an amazing performance.

Post Grad

Starring Alexis Bledel this movie features a new college graduate who had the plan of getting good grades, graduating and getting her dream job. Things don’t go as planned and she is forced to move back in with her family and form a new plan. This movie is interesting if only because there are a number of college graduates approaching this situation today. But overall the movie seems to have little promise because everything seems to be trying for the magic and awkwardness of Little Miss Sunshine but ends up being just awkward. The reason for this is that when you read about her quirky family it is too much to be realistic and it keeps any information about the main character being divulged.

Still in Theaters

Ponyo

While this may be one Disney movie that has not gotten the usual fanfare it is being hailed by the critics as a beautiful work of art. This movie is based on an ancient Japanese creation myth and follows the story of a young boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who dreams of becoming human. This movie is not only beautifully done but it is a great way to bring the past alive and get children to learn about ancient mythology.

In Theaters Now: Some of the best movies of the year

District 9

District 9

This movie is the one that’s going to bring back the Sci-Fi genre with a completely original story, amazing special effects and more action than most of the action thrillers we’ll see this year. The movie revolves around District 9 which is a special area reserved for aliens, aliens who just want to go home. You will be kept on the edge of your seat for the entire movie and you’ll never expect what is coming. If you’re looking for one wild ride, check this movie out!

Band Slam

This is the new teen movie and it stars some familiar faces,  including the female lead in High School Musical. It focuses on a a young man who decides to manage a band and help them get a record deal. In the end you have a fun but mildly predictable teenage movie.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

This is being heralded as the romance of the year and it has the potential to strike your heart just as strongly as The Notebook. This sentimental movie involves the love between two people who can never be fully together, because the time traveler keeps traveling through time without being able to control it. Despite that, he still manages to marry and have some sort of life with the woman he loves. Bring a tissue or two or perhaps a good shoulder to cry on.

The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard.

The slap happy comedy of the weekend which is certain to give a few stupid silly laughs. Don’t expect much for plot or sembalnce of common sense, but for a few completely foolish laughs, it can’t be missed. It might just have you looking at car salesmen in a whole new light.

In Theaters Now: Something for everyone but the kids.

It is a bit surprising that the kids get no new releases this week, as they flock to the theaters in summer, but they are left with a slew of other choices. Harry Potter, G-Force, Aliens in the Attic and Ice Age, are all still in threaters for kids to get away from the heat. For the adults, we’ve got something for the ladies, something for the action junkies, and something if you’re into suspense.

GI Joe

G.I. Joe

This is certainly one of those movies that can go one of two ways, instant fame and popularity like Ironman, or cheesy, action like Fantasic Four. Off the bat this movie has two things going for it, one it’s about time they came out with a G. I. Joe movie, and two Channing Tatum has got the looks and the charm to bring in the women. Beyond that it is an action thrill ride that you would expect, especially if you have seen the previews, but it also packs in a bit of comedy and fun along the way. As with most movies of this sort of action spinoff type, it falls short of story and packs in the action, which isn’t always a bad thing when you’re just looking for a fun break from reality.

Julie & Julia

Based on the story of Julia Child and the woman who decades later cooks everything in her cookbook and writes a blog about it.  Meryl Streep (Julia Child) does not disappoint and I still have my doubts as to if she ever will, and she’s paired again with Stanley Tucci (Julia’s husband, Paul)  and they have unbelievable chemistry onscreen. But therein lies the problem I have with this movie, as cute as she may be (Amy Adams), I see very little draw to the Julie story. “I’m going to cook and write a blog about it.” Well good for you, glad you can afford it and dedicate that kind of time to it, but the character just seems whiny and the story behind her is boring. So you might want to wait for dvd so you can skip right to the glorious parts with Streep and Tucci.

A Perfect Getaway

It seems that nearly every movie that has suspense and a little bit of cheap scares is being marketed as a horror latel, and maybe it’s because they’re been a lack of them this summer. This movie details two newlyweds, who decide to backpack through Hawaii, they meet up with two other couples and find out that a different newlywed couple has been killed. Of course the only thing to do then is try and solve who it is. Expect loopholes and being hit over the head with the fact that the ending “keeps you guessing.” Overall there are no big names or really new ideas in this movie, and the murders are not even that scary or intriguing, so this one you might consider waiting till it comes out on dvd to give it a try.

There are a few limited releases this weekend, but only one that sounds truly intriguing to me.

I Sell the Dead

If the title doesn’t get you thinking, just wait till you hear the story line. Two graverobbers are now facing their own death – by guillotine. As they await the end, they think back on their lives as graverobbers from beginning to end, and the story is filled with more adventure and real horror than you would ever expect. It’s worth checking out as it will probably give you the creeps and maybe a scare or two, long before A Perfect Getaway does.

In Theaters Now: “Aliens” for the kids and “Funny People” for the adults

Funny People

Funny People

I think this movie is going to take a lot of people by surprise, because it’s more than a comedy and when it changes it never goes the direction you expect. The good thing about this movie is that it seems real, it doesn’t make the assumption that incredible situations turn people into self-sacrificing, perfect individuals, which to me is incredibly intriguing. The movie, if you’ve happened to look at the run time, is quite long for what is being advertised as an almost slaphappy comedy at over 2 hours. The stand-up comedy bits and the behind the scenes give us that feel of getting to know Adam Sandler a bit better, or even Seth Rogan, but what I think is the focus of this movie is not necessarily the comedy but that it shows that people are who they are and that does not necessarily change when they face adversity or get saved from it.

Aliens in the Attic

In this week’s kids film a family goes to a house in Maine, when suprise Aliens attack. They’re cute and funny and everything you expect for a kids movie, and of course the family bands together in the way you’d expect and saves the day. The plot is nothing we haven’t seen before but then again that is the way of most kids movies, you pay not necessarily to be entertained but to keep the kids occupied for a good hour and a half. This movie will accomplish that especially if the kids are a bit younger, it’s rated PG mainly for suggestive comedy and language but expect a little bit of violence (nothing gory or truly scary).

The Collector

When I first heard the plot of this movie, it made me laugh out loud because not only is it really unbelievable but it’s hard to see the situation as not being funny. A thief breaks into a house in order to steal some sort of valuable gem, but wait! A derranged madmad has also decided to come to this house and have some fun, oops, did I come at a bad time? So in true Hollywood fashion, the bad guy becomes the hero as the thief has to rescue the family and find a way out of the now booby trapped mansion. Expect lots of scares and lots of gore as these booby traps are exactly what you’d expect from the guys who wrote Saw4, 5, and 6.

In Theaters Now: Guinea Pigs and Politics take center stage.

In The Loop

In The Loop

This movie has been largely underrepresented and that is probably the reason why you either haven’t heard of it or don’t really know what it’s about. In the Loop stars Peter Capaldi, James Gandolfini and Tim Hollander, and tells about the interactions of Britain and the U.S. over the thought of going to war. As with most good satires the “Iraq War” is not mentioned as the conflict in question, nor is the answer really given. What makes this movie shine is not necessarily the catalyst but rather the interactions of government officials on both sides as each try to be tongue in cheek about what is really going on. This movie drips with brilliant British humor and satire, with actors who seem to have been given free reign to play their parts. Many scenes feel like they weren’t completely planned, yet they come off great. Critics and moviegoers alike have hailed this movie as being among the freshest films we’ll see this summer, and I could not agree more.

G-Force

Kids’ movies are my guilty pleasure and I will admit to seeing just about every one that has come out in the past few years, especially anything with Disney or Pixar behind it. G-Force is going to be one of the better movies out this weekend, because not only is it a movie for kids but it was created by a kid. The idea for this movie actually came from the director’s young son, so it’s a pretty good bet your kids are going to love it as well. The movie is well-written and probably has one of the better plots for a kids movie than most expect, and like most kids’ movies these days, it has a few witty remarks geared to make the parents laugh as well. Nicholas Cage, Tracy Morgan, Penelope Cruz and Sam Rockwell all pull off amazing voice performances in this one. For a fun night out with the kids see G-Force. For an adult night out see In the Loop.

Orphan

The newest horror movie to hit the market. Most critics are finding this movie to be a bit formulaic. Orphan has a decent cast and a decent scare or two, and there are even a few laughs to look forward to. There are a few convenient plot holes (who would honestly let this couple adopt?) and as can be expected it harkens back to the usual fare of evil children movies. Don’t expect a lot of blood and gore horror in this movie, instead it follows more along the psychological thriller type with a bit more scares than we might be used to in that genre.

The Ugly Truth

Speaking of forumalaic…here comes the newest romantic comedy. This one features two people who don’t seem to get along and who seem to have nothing in common. What’s the obvious solution? Work together in order to get the girl to attract a decent guy, and who better to ask for advice than a womanizer who seems to have very little respect for women. And then comes the ending we’re all expecting and by the end neither character changes enough for either to be very redeemable and so they perhaps deserve each other. While it may not be the worst romantic comedy ever put out, the characters do need to have a bit more of the likability factor and I don’t necessarily buy the plot.

In Theaters Now: ‘Potter’ Opens Unopposed

<a href='http://www.movierental.com/link/potter'>Harry Potter</a> and the Half-Blood Prince

It probably comes as no surprise that what is arguably the biggest movie franchise in history has scared away any all competition with its Wednesday release. Don’t expect any big names or big movies this week. If you’re not a Potter fan, or you were one of the thousands lined up for the midnight showing, you may be a little disappointed with what this weekend has to offer.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Love him or hate him but that angsty wizard pulls in the big money and the big crowds, with every one of the movies having a worldwide gross of over $700 million. In this installment love is in the air, and if you don’t know between who I really won’t spoil it. Dumbledore takes a much bigger role in this one than we’re used to seeing and while it may not be as impressive as seeing Yoda kicking butt it still packs an amusing ‘punch.’

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince tickets on sale now!

The following movies are only opening in select theaters so keep a look out for them…or don’t really.

(500) Days of Summer

This movie is probably only opening against Potter because it never had much of a chance in the first place. The tagline for this one is ‘Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t.’ and if that doesn’t give you a hint at how cheesy this movie is going to be, the story line holds absolutely nothing of interest. Even if this movie is done well to get over such a seemingly overdone plot line would need some Hollywood heartthrobs that this move seriously lacks. ‘3rd Rock from the Sun’ fans might be happy with the main actor (no not the goofy funny one, the socially awkward cute in a ‘he’s the only one remotely close to a teenager on the show way’). Personally I can be a sucker for a decent romantic comedy (like the Proposal) but I see nothing redeeming about this one.

Homecoming

Yes it’s another one of those movies that give guys that famous fear of commitment. In this one, a high school football star comes home from college with a new girlfriend. This of course drives his ex-girlfriend psycho and she goes on a rampage to get rid of the new girl. I’m not quite sure who comes up with Horror movie plotlines lately but I have a theory that it has something to do with an infinite amount of monkeys with an infinite amount of typewriters….on the bright side eventually these monkeys might turn out something worth watching.

While normally I don’t report on films that don’t exactly fit into the mainstream, considering Harry Potter is pretty much the only choice for the weekend, here is a movie that is definitely worth trying to find.

A Woman in Berlin

If you are looking for a very controversial, sad and very powerful movie, this is it. While as of late Holocaust movies seem to be the main releases in the art house documentary scene, this one takes place in 1945 and tells the story of a German woman. It has had a controversial history, based on the published diaries of Anonyma (Nina Hoss). The diaries told about her rape and her subsequent struggles. The book was banned in 1953 because of the taboo subject but became a literary phenomenon in 2003. This movie is filled with drama and very powerful characters that shows just how World War II’s aftermath affected people on both sides.
