Now in Theaters: Christmas comes early.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

The Men Who Stare at Goats

For a movie that is only opening in limited release I have seen more previews for this one than any of the movies below. It seems to me that it could either be largely stupid or immensely entertaining. The movie focuses on a secret military unit whose focus is psychic warfare. What the unit has turned into however is a unit specializing in rather strange interrogation techniques.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol

Now there are so many different versions of this movie floating around and in a month we will all be subjected to watching them over and over again in a month’s time. Perhaps that is the reasoning for this movie being released so early but I really think that a release closer to Christmas would have given this movie better box office returns. This is a CGI version of the classic tale with Jim Carrey doing the voice of Ebeneezer Scrooge. While this tale is a classic and this does look like a very cute version I’m wondering if there are no other Christmas stories out there.

The Box

This is another new take on a classic tale. In this movie a couple is given a box with a button. They are told that if they push the button, someone will die and they will be given $1 million. Unlike some versions of the story in this movie the box will only kill someone that the person pressing the button does not know.  This movie stars James Marsden and Cameron Diaz as the uphappy couple who are granted the box and forced to make this terrifying decision.

The Fourth Kind

This movie tells the story of a psychologist who travels to a small town in Alaska where every year a number of people disappear from the town. Despite numerous investigations the truth has never been discovered that is until this psychologist starts videotapping sessions with traumatized patients. What she uncovers is truth of encounters of the fourth kind – alien abduction. This movie threatens to be another in the recent trend of really good horror movies.

Now in Theaters: Michael Jackson is it.

This Is It

This weekend there is only one movie opening in wide release and there is little wonder why.

This is It

The documentary movie featuring a behind the scenes look at the life of Michael Jackson is the only movie in wide release this weekend. This would probably be the case even under normal circumstances but it has been announced that this movie will only be released in theaters for two weeks. Which means a limited amount of time for a very very large amount of fans to see this movie on the big screen. There have been some mixed reviews but it is hard not to want to watch the story of one of the most influential music artists of all time.

There are a few movies in limited release that deserve mentioning.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

Now I am not one for gorey movies but Boondock Saints does it with cool style, after all what is cooler than chanting in Latin before you are about to kill someone. Talk about building suspense. This time the brothers are on the case of a murdered priest and this time the case is important enough for them to leave the treasured life in Ireland.

The Fall

In a rather odd twist this movie features the problems that arise with a rising politician’s brother is jailed for murdering a priest. Perhaps you should make a double feature of these two movies.

These movies are still in theaters, if you haven’t seen them what are you waiting for?

Paranormal Activity

I have mentioned this film a few times and it is hard not to keep mentioning it. This movie is bound to make you jump and scream at least once. With ghost stories and horrors rarely being original this movie is so refreshing it is not even funny.

Now In Theaters: High Flying Fun

amelia

Whether you are looking for the fun of a flying Robot or the moving tale of Amelia Earhart the box office is here for you.

Amelia

This movie looks to be fantastic, not because of the actors (don’t get me wrong Gere is great, but I’ve never really gotten around to liking Swank), but because of the cinematography. I say this because the period is painstakingly recreated and some scenes just look beautiful but the story line will sometimes leave much to be desired. With this movie we all know the ending just like we all knew the ending to M*A*S*H* and the Titanic but we watch because we want to know the story behind the scenes and not because we’re held in suspense of the ending. This movie pretends that the ending is not immediately known and for that some scenes might seem unnecessary. But as always expect a brilliant performance from Gere.

Astro Boy

When I first saw previews for this movie I had absolutely no desire to see it. It looked a little over the top, very cheesy and just nothing original. It seems I may have been wrong because critics are giving it higher praise than I would have expected. Though the movie will have the plot that you know by heart the second you sit down, there is witty dialogue and plenty of action. The story may fall at the seams at times but when you can already expect the way things are going to go, why not play up the action?

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant

I don’t know about you but I am really really tired of Vampire movies, especially cheesy young adult vampire movies. This is another vampire movie based on a book and it seems like everyone is fighting to get on the vampire bandwagon. In this movie a Vampire’s Assistant  screws up (now that’s novel) and threatens to worsen a feud between two groups of vampires. The movie does have an emotional element as the assistant is just a young boy who has been turned into a vampire and is trying to keep a hold on his humanity. Now I love a good vampire story as much as the next guy but this is just another movie geared toward young girls who are anxiously awaiting the new Twilight movie.

Saw VI

I probably don’t even have to mention this one, as it’s Halloween, but yes the latest installment of Saw has been released. I will admit to have never seen a single one of these because I am not one for tremendously gory films no matter how much people tell me it is more about the psychological puzzles than anything else. This movie is the same thoroughfare as all the others so get ready for a truly gore-filled horror fest.

Now in Theaters: Fairy Tales do come true

where the wild things are

Where the Wild Things Are

If you have children, know children or perhaps were a child yourself then you have probably heard of this book. Well now the beloved book is coming to life on the big screen in a big way. The movie follows the same story as the book, where Max after being sent to bed for misbehaving imagines that he sails away to an island full of monsters. The monsters love Max and they make him their king, and even though things are perfect, Max eventually longs to be home with his family. This movie is filled with emotion and will certainly strike a chord with children though it may be somewhat lacking the comedic moments that holds their attention.

Law Abiding Citizens

This movie stars Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. It seems like one of those typical crime dramas with good guy against bad guy, except bad guy is already behind bars. In this film the criminal still has massive control over the city and uses that to wreck havoc that said good guy tries to stop. This could have been done in a realistic manner as there are plenty of criminals that could still have followers and power behind bars…but this movie is not going in that direction. There is little realistic or believable about the way this movie plays out and by the end, it just seems to get worse.

The Stepfather

This is a remake of the movie that gave Terry O’Quinn (Lost) his big break. All that can be said is that Dylan Walsh has some very very big shoes to fill. The movie tells about Michael who comes home from military school to find his mother happily in love with her boyfriend. Michael feels that something is not quite right with the man and goes on a quest to find out, but it seems that his soon to be stepfather is very good at keeping secrets. After all the man has been trying to create the perfect family for a very long time and whenever his current family isn’t perfect…well he has ways of starting over again.

New York, I Love You

This movie is only coming out to a limited release this weekend but those of you with theaters showing it, you might just want to stop in. Though it features 11 different short (really short) love stories, it has a small sense of charm to it. You get to see the wide range of people that call New York home and have a few aww moments mixed in. For those of you who are Shia Labeouf or Natalie Portman fans, you’ll seen bits of them in this movie. It’s sweet but not perfect and you might get annoyed at not really getting entranced by one full love story, but it has it’s own strengths if you are just willing to look for them.

Now In Theaters: Ghosts and Couples Therapy

Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat

By now you’ve probably seen more than a few previews for this and from the previews it looks like a halfway decent movie. So far the critics hate it but the movie-goers are enjoying it. The reason for this is that Couples Retreat is pure and simple and guilty pleasure comedy. Stupid and predictable and out for cheap laughs, but fun. There’s nothing new here, just four couples on a tropical island trying to fix their marriage, but the one liners and small bits of comedic situations make for a fun and funny movie.

Paranormal Activity

If you’re like me you’re getting awfully sick of the reality TV ghost shows, but the good news is that despite it’s title this movie is well good. This low-budget film is made in the now popular mockumentary style and packs in more scares and suspense than you may have thought possible in 90 minutes. The string of been there done that horrors is finally over and something new is taking it’s place. This movie about a haunted house has everything good about the old fashioned horror thrillers with plenty of new things thrown in. This movie had a limited release in late September and its popularity is causing it to reach more and more theaters…so check it out!

Toy Story & Toy Story 2 3D

If you’re already gone to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs than there is little out there to take the little ones to, except for this amazing double feature. In order to promote the upcoming movie Toy Story 3, Disney has come up with money making genius by releasing the very popular series in theaters, in 3D no less. These movies were amazing and fun the first time and if your kids were too young (or not even born yet…hard to believe it has already been 14 years since the release of Toy Story) the first time around it is a great chance for them to experience them on the big screen. For movies that have already been released in theaters and are widely available on dvd, they have been doing remarkably well in the box office.

Love Happens

This movie tells of the story of a self-help guru (Aaron Eckhart) who is really the one in need of help. This of course allows for the entrance of the one girl (Jennifer Aniston) who can make it all better. Like most chick flicks the story is formulaic and just a tad contrived, but in the end it’s sappy and tearful and fulfills all the goals of a chick flick. Don’t expect the men to sit through it with you because the story line is not enough to hold their attention, but not a bad choice for a girls night out.

Now in Theaters: Learning to Lie and Learning to kill Zombies

The Invention Of Lying

The Invention of Lying

This funny, quirky and yet satirical movie takes place in a little town where no one lies, they do not even have the concept of lying. But one man finds out that he can lie and with this lying comes a whole new realm of possibilities. One of these possibilities is that he can tell his mother that dying does not led to oblivion but to a wonderful afterlife, this is an idea that everyone believes and suddenly wants to know more about. With great acting and a story that will constantly take you by surprise, this movie is not to be missed.

Zombieland

This is the one that zombie fans have been waiting for. It’s crazy, fun and perhaps one of the best roles we’ll ever see Woody Harrelson in. The movie details four unlikely heroes who have survived the zombie epidemic and are desperately trying to get to an amusement park that is a zombie free zone. The highly anticipated celebrity cameo is perhaps one of the best scenes of the movie and if you have not heard who it is, it might just catch you off-guard. For a fun night out with plenty of zombie bashing check out this destined to be Blockbuster.

Whip It

If you are looking for a weekend filled with plenty of girl bashing then this is the movie for you. While you are watching this flim you may find yourself surprised that it is the director’s debut film, and you might even be more surprised to find out that director is Drew Barrymore. The little girl that grew up around movies apparently knows plenty about how to make them work because this movie does just about everything. The story centers around 17-year old Bliss who suddenly finds her calling when the roller derby comes to town. The rest of the movie focuses on female comraderie and overcoming obstacles in order to do what you love.

Capitalism: A Love Story

Everyone’s favorite biased documentary filmmaker is back and this time he is out to find out why the economy is in recession and where has all the money gone. He does so in a way that only presents one side of the story and while at times it does bring to light some unjust practices and stirring moments in the end it leaves us with nothing. There is no call to action, no answers, nothing but criticism. Though this romp through history does offer some moving words from the last president to see the U.S. through trying economic times, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Now in Theaters: Bruce Willis, Music and debauchery

Surrogates

Surrogates

This is the new Bruce Willis movie and with a plot that vaguely resembles The Gamer. In this world people are able to live through their surrogates, robots that allow them to live their lives without the risk. Humans have become completely dependent on their surrogates and never really venture out into the real world. Bruce Willis plays a detective who uses his surrogate to investigate the murder of a college student, but as the investigation progresses he realizes that he will have to abandon his surrogate and venture into the real world himself.

Fame

The beloved musical is coming to the big screen in a rapidly growing trend. Whether this is due to a lack of ideas for movies or an honest desire to bring back the golden age of musicals, this movie is as well done as the others. It recaptures the magic and fun of Fame with all the effects that can be offered by putting a play on the big screen. Fame centers around a performance arts high school and the students who all one day hope to be stars.

Pandorum

This new sci-fi movie features Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster as astronauts who awaken from hypersleep to find themselves lost deep in space. They are dioriented from hypersleep and have no idea of who they are, but gradually they discover that the ship they thought they were alone on, once contained 60,000 passengers. As the men try to discover what happened to the people they find themselves fighting an unknown force. Get ready for an adventure with this sci-fi horror.

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell

This movie is based on the memoir of Tucker Max which tells the story of his debauchery driven life. Tucker (played by Matt Czuchry) behaves terribly while attending a bachelor party, so much so that he finds himself uninvited to the wedding. This prompts Tucker to give up his selfish ways in order to regain his invitation.

In Theaters Now: Something for everyone

The Informant!

This weekend some great movies will actually be hitting the screen after some pretty dull weeks this is a good sign. We’ve got a comedy, a chick flick and something for the kids.

The Informant!

This move stars Matt Damon and place in him in a goofy crime comedy. This movie tells the story of Mark Whitacre who discovers that the agricultural company he works for has been price fixing. He decides to turn evidence for the FBI. The only problem: he not only fails to mention his own unsavory activities but threatens to ruin the entire investigation. This movie falls flat of the entertainment it promises for many critics but with a great performance by Matt Damon, and the fact that many of us go to the movies to be entertained, this movie is worth going to see.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

I read this book as a child and I am still skeptical about the idea of it becoming a full length movie. But the reviews for it have been sky high, with critics praising the script, animation and even the voice actors. The story is about a very poor town that have limited choice in the food they eat, so misunderstood inventor Flint, makes his greatest invention yet, a machine that makes tasty food from water. But once the rain of food comes down on the city things start to go wrong.

Love Happens

This movie tells the story of widower Burke who goes to Seattle to teach a seminar on mourning the loss of loved ones. It is here that he meets Eloise, who in unconventional ways helps him heal from the pain of his own wife’s death. There is little real chemistry happening between Burke and Eloise which makes the movie feel like a little stilted while still being sappy enough to make you groan. But then again that is why women love chick flicks.

Jennifer’s Body

This comedy/horror is about a young cheerleader who becomes possessed. And while possessed gains the amazing new talent of killing all her male classmates. This is one movie that might make guys think twice about chasing after those cheerleaders. While this may sound like another dime a day horror, this romp is sexy, funny and well bloody, but it breaks out of the mold that so many recent horrors have been placed in lately. Get ready to be surprised and have some fun with this one.

In Theaters Now: An apocalypse, a horror and another Tyler Perry.

9

9

If you have not heard about this movie, now is the time to find out. This movie has been hailed by critics for it’s brilliant story and amazing animation, but be warned an animation it may be, for kids it is not. In what seems very Terminator and Matrix-esque, machines have taken over and decimated the human population. But salvation comes in a collection of creatures given the spark of life, 9 to be precise. When “2” goes missing the creatures ban together to take on the machine and save the soul of their friend and their own souls in the process. While this movie is beautifully done and very unique, it is also very dark, so use caution when deciding whether or not to take your kids to see it.

Sorority Row

The plot for this movie seems strangely similar to the I know what you did last summer series and seems to have very little originality of its own. Five sorority sisters end up killing a fellow sister in a prank gone wrong. Like any group of scared college kids they decide to keep the matter a secret, but everything changes when a killer shows up intent on killing anyone who knwos the truth. If Final Destination and Halloween II were not enough to fill your horror movie quota, go ahead and see this one, but don’t expect anything terribly original.

Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All by Myself

If you really do not know what Tyler Perry movies are like by now, then you probably have just never been interested. Tyler Perry has made his fame by creating incredibly low budget movies that strike big rewards at the box office. In this movie, Madea catches 16 year old Jennifer and her younger brothers looting her house, so Madea does the only punishment she can think of and sends to the children off to live with their aunt April. April can barely keep her own life together, and wants nothing to do with the kids, which makes her the perfect choice for a guardian, but of course things eventually start to change.

Whiteout

This movie follows U.S. Marshall Carrie Setko as she goes about investigating the first murder in Antartica. As Carrie races to uncover Antartica’s secrets and find out who is still willing to kill for them, she finds herself fighting against time as Antartica’s deadly whiteout is closing in. The movie finds itself as predictable as movies come and you may find the story and Carrie’s character bogged down by the flashbacks. But if you’re simply looking to be entertained, this movie might be worth a shot.

In Theaters Now: Comedy and Sci-Fi

Extract

Extract

Joel (Bateman) is the owner of an extract manufacturing plant and it seems like nothing is going right, including his marriage to Suzie (Kristen Wiig). Joel must now find a way to get his life back on track while contending with the attempts of Cindy (Mila Kunis) to scam his business and the midguided advice of his bartender friend Dean (Ben Affleck).

Gamer

This movie has been advertised on and off for months now, and while the concept seems somewhat new the worry is if it can be pulled off. The story takes us into the future where gaming means controlling other humans in a massive multiplayer game. Dying means the death of the person you are controlling. The movie focuses on Kable who has been taken from his family and forced to be an avatar in the game and he must escape to get back to his family and end the evil video game conglomerate.

All About Steve

This new Sanda Bullock film is all about a woman developing a stalkerish relationship with Steve. The movie has some great comedy actors including Bradley Cooper as Steve and Thomas Haden Church as Hartman. Mary (Bullock) believes that she is meant to be with Steve a CNN newscaster who travels the country covering news stories. Mary follows Steve all over the country determined to show him that they are meant to be.

Still in Theaters

(500) Days of Summer

The realistic love story of a man ( Joseph-Gordon Levitt) who falls in love with a woman (Zooey Deschantel) who does not believe in love. Critics are calling this movie refreshingly honest and charming, it’s strong point is that it is nothing like your usual romantic comedy.
