Congrats NL team for your 10 year journey and hope you grow to greater heights. I have a suggestion. If possible, keep a kind of excel sheet containing dates, big news channels’ debate topics with their hashtags, plus what NL thinks is being ignored the same day. So, at the end of like six months or more, anyone can look at this and easily understand what all topics are the legacy media groups trying to divert attention from. (Newsance explains this but visible data is much more powerful than listening passively.)

Another request. If possible, a report on how freebies can affect the financial health of a state like Andhra Pradesh. The salaries and pensions of government employees are withheld till minimum 10th of every month, so they can first distribute their freebies with much fanfare. Plus, every month, funds are brought as loans in some form or the other. Some people receiving the freebies in tier two and three cities are even investing in cryptos, expecting faster returns after watching half-baked ads.

Hi NL team,

Abhinandan recently mentioned that he has no female role models and could use some suggestions, so sharing my two cents about my role models. Late Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is one of my idols. I would highly recommend checking out the movie On The Basis Of Sex. Without her, I cannot imagine having the rights that I do today in the US.

A couple more suggestions would be to read about Ida B.Wells (book suggestion: Ida B the Queen: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Ida B. Wells) and Pauli Murray (book suggestion: Pauli Murray: A Personal and Political Life). Both of them are prominent (yet underappreciated) civil rights activists.

I would also recommend reading about the suffrage movement (book suggestion: The Women’s March) both in the US and in Britain. The movement is filled with women who had the courage to risk (and eventually lost) their lives to gain the right to vote.

Lastly, could you please share Jayashree’s suggestions for the same with the listeners, so we could benefit from it as well.

Congratulations on turning 10. Since there was some brainstorming in the last Hafta on the way forward for NL, I would like to plug in mine. Many congratulations on the 10th anniversary. I have been a viewer/subscriber since the days of Clothesline and Dhobi Ghat, so in a way congratulations are in order for me as well. It was a delight to have Mehraj back on Hafta and good to know that he has been enjoying beers in my neck of the woods, ie England. Wonder who leaves first, BoJo from Downing Street or Mehraj from England for the “partygate”.

Raman Sir’s experience with a shopkeeper in Kashmir reminds me of my first ever trip to a supermarket in Israel. The girl at the checkout counter asked me (very authoritatively) to bring her an apple from the stands. When I gave her a bewildered look, she drawled, “Whaaaat I am hungry, can’t go there, go get me an apple, I will pay for it.” So it is not always laziness, sometimes it is chutzpah. The three years that I spent there made me re-examine all my notions of politeness and formality. Now in England, I miss Israeli informality.

Congratulations for completing 10 years. Regarding the hijab issue, I wanted to write earlier in the week. However, the issue is way muddier than it was discussed.

We see that the case is now being referred to a larger bench and the drama continues. However, I think it is a usual distraction created by the ruling party during elections. This issue is way more nuanced than most of the population thinks. Can you discuss it in a detailed manner? Not just from the religion perspective, but from freedom of expression, personal laws, discrimination (caste, religion, race, etc) and how it takes society hundreds of years backwards.

Hello, ever since the topic of crypto was first brought up on Hafta and I wrote in that 2,400-word letter, I’ve been wanting a longer and proper discussion on Bitcoin.

Just like Abhinandan had travel shows before they were a thing, had a subscription driven news website which everyone said wouldn’t work out – I see Bitcoin in the same vein.

Can we have a separate podcast just about Bitcoin and crypto which I would love to be a part of, as I have been studying and using it for almost two years now (I changed my subscription to Gamechanger as a form of bribe to be part of the podcast).

PS: I am also sending in a book for everyone to read about why we need Bitcoin 🙂

The reason for the hijab row is to show Muslims their place.

Everybody on Hafta was talking about hijab being patriarchal and regressive. First of all, if that’s the case then Muslim women will voice out their problems. Similarly, if pagdi on a Sikh is regressive then the Sikh men will try to find out their way. Over here, educated women travelling on their individual transport to college, are demanding to wear the hijab. How does wearing a hijab cause any problem to any non Muslim or a college?

Abhinandan, you always talk about perspective on Islam’s issues given by those who aren’t from the Muslim community. Please get Ms Yasmin Mogahed on your show or else interview her separately on hijab. Please, it’s a religious issue so get our religious perspective. Our religious scholars are not like the Hindu scholars Meghnad and Manisha interviewed. To prove his point, he resorted to lying. From 40 percent Hindu population in the Netherlands, he came down to two percent. Actually, it’s close to one percent.

Sony is finally releasing an Uncharted movie after trying to make one for over a decade. If you need more evidence that the film actually exists beyond a snap of Tom Holland in Nathan Drake’s classic attire, here’s the first trailer.

Even though Holland plays a much younger version of the character (which Mark Wahlberg’s Sully jokes about in the opening moments) than in the games, the enjoyable-enough trailer incudes some of the most memorable moments from Drake’s globe-trotting adventures. There isn’t a bit where he clambers up a train carriage that’s dangling over a cliff, but there’s the cargo plane set piece from Uncharted 3 and a ship trapped inside a cave, just like in Uncharted 4. The clip includes some underground exploration too.

The film’s set to arrive in theaters on February 18th, following several delays. Attempts to make an Uncharted movie stopped and started over the years, with directors including David O. Russell, Seth Gordon and Shawn Levy being attached at certain points before Zombieland and Venom helmer Ruben Fleischer saw the film through. The project had been in development for so long that, for a while, Wahlberg looked set to play Drake, rather than the character’s mentor.

Some viewers might be coming to the franchise with fresh eyes (maybe because they need more Tom Holland in their lives), and they might want to play the games to see what all the fuss is about. Sony Pictures included a handy reminder at the end of the trailer about a remastered bundle of Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy that’s coming to PlayStation 5 and PC in early 2022.

In case the trailer doesn’t quite match up to what you might have expected, or Holland doesn’t seem like the right person for the gig in your opinion, it’s worth checking out this short fan film from a few years back in which Nathan Fillion plays the rogueish treasure hunter. It’s a blast.

One of the most memorable exchanges in the trailer for The Batman wasn’t penned by co-writer and director Matt Reeves. It was written by Zoe Kravitz, because she just knew her character that well.

The Batman opens March 4. The movie sees the Caped Crusader (Robert Pattinson) form an uneasy alliance with Catwoman, aka Selina Kyle (Kravitz), to help solve a web of crimes being committed by the Riddler (Paul Dano). At one point, that alliance sees Batman going back to Selina’s apartment where he makes the astute observation “You’ve got a lot of cats,” to which she replies “I have a thing about strays.” “Strays,” in this instance, refers not just to cats but, maybe, that man who is so lost and alone he dresses up as a Bat every night to fight crime. Here it is.

“The character is so well-developed in the script, and I was really excited to explore her backstory and where she comes from and the process that she goes through in terms of kind of becoming closer to what will be Catwoman,” Kravitz said at a recent press event. “It was really lovely to be able to play Selina and not have to jump straight to Catwoman. I think with these iconic characters that we all love so much, it can be overwhelming in terms of, ‘OK, now here’s Catwoman,’ and I have this wonderful opportunity to kind of slowly develop her and the audience gets to come on that journey with me.”

It’s in that deep exploration of Selina Kyle before Catwoman that the above exchange came to be.

“Certain things that are some of my favorite moments of lines in the movie, they’re yours,” co-writer/director Matt Reeves said to Kravitz at the event. “We talked a lot about the cats and we’re talking about this notion of the background that she comes from and what her life was, in essence, because she was essentially an orphan as well. That she was a stray and she was collecting cats because now she’s decided to protect strays. And so that whole conversation led to this whole idea … This is literally how this happened. I said, ‘That is so great.’ She goes ‘So I could say that, right? Something about like, you know, ‘I have a thing about strays’ and I said ‘Yeah, but how do we set that up?’ She goes ‘Oh, that’s easy. He can just say, ‘You got a lot of cats.’ I thought that is great.’”

And so it didn’t just make it into the movie, it made it into the most recent trailer. Also, you wouldn’t be wrong in assuming that an exploration of Selina before Catwoman does suggest could be more of her down the road. “What we’re really trying to do is to launch this world and if the world embraces this we have a lot of good ideas and for sure we want Selena to continue,” Reeves said.

The Batman opens March 4.

It’s true. Next week, the highly anticipated, long-awaited, direct sequel to the first two Ghostbusters movies will finally be in theaters. And as you may have heard, the film leans heavily into a deep knowledge of the original 1984 film, directed by Ivan Reitman. This time, his son Jason is behind the camera and the movie picks up the story about 30 years after audiences last heard from Peter Venkman, Ray Stanz, Winston Zeddemore, and Egon Spengler.

The best way to prepare for Ghostbusters: Afterlife would be to rent or buy Ghostbusters and rewatch it. Ghostbusters 2 couldn’t hurt either but is much less crucial to understanding the new story. If you don’t have the time, we’re gonna go back and hit the big points that will make sure you are ready for all the big twists and turns of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Note: There won’t be any direct mention of Afterlife spoilers in this article but there will be mentions of things that illuminate big spoilers in the movie. So if you want to go in completely clean, it’s probably best to avoid.

Who are the Ghostbusters?

In 1984’s New York City, two scientists—Ray Stanz (played by Dan Aykroyd) and Egon Spengler (played by Harold Ramis)—created a technology that allowed them to trap and store ghosts. Together with their friend and fellow scientist Peter Venkman (played by Bill Murray), the trio used that technology as the basis of a business called “Ghostbusters.” The Ghostbusters were basically firefighters but instead of putting out flames they captured ghosts. Business was booming and so the group added a fourth member, Winston Zeddemore (played by Ernie Hudson) to help out. Eventually, the rise in ghost activity lead to a God-like creature named Gozer arriving in New York hoping to take over the world. But the Ghostbusters defeated her and her chosen destructor, a massive realization of a mascot for a marshmallow company named Stay Puft. New York City, and the world, was saved.

Is there a larger mythology to Ghostbusters?

On the surface, Ghostbusters is a pretty straightforward movie about people creating a business in the 1980s and saving the world. But yes, Ramis and Aykroyd, who wrote the film as well as starred in it, added in a few extra layers of mythology. Mainly, the reason given for the rise in ghosts activity is that an architect named Ivo Shandor built an apartment complex in New York which acted as a conductor for supernatural activity. Shandor hoped his work would help bring back Gozer, an ancient, powerful being who has been around since 6,000 BC. The only way to bring back Gozer, however, is to first get two humans to perform a ritual while being possessed by the spirits of powerful Gozer allies, Vinz Clortho, the Keymaster, and Zuul, the Gatekeeper. Evil beings known as Terror Dogs (think large bulls mixed with dogs) arrive in the real world, hunt down humans—in this case, Dana Barrett (played by Sigourney Weaver) and Louis Tully (played by Rick Moranis)—and pass the essence of the Keymaster and Gatekeeper to them. Once those two perform a ritual, Gozer can return, which is exactly what happens.

What happened to the Ghostbusters?

After defeating Gozer, the Ghostbusters faced hard times in the form of huge debts caused by their exploits saving the city. They separated for a while but were brought back together when another evil being, Vigo the Carpathian, tried to rise to power. The Ghostbusters, of course, defeated him as well. See also the largely unrelated (for now) plot of Ghostbusters 2. After that, however, we don’t know what was next. What we do know from the Afterlife trailers is that Ray Stanz is back at the occult book store he owned at the beginning of Ghostbusters 2 and, for some reason, Egon Spengler was in the small town of Summerville, Oklahoma. It’s here we’ll meet the main characters of Afterlife and the bulk of its story will take place. Also, the question “What happened to the Ghostbusters?” will be revealed in more detail.

What did the Ghostbusters use to bust ghosts?

Now we’re talking. The Ghostbusters have a few key pieces of technology that help them bust ghosts. The first is the Proton Pack, the main weapon of a ghostbuster. It’s a giant backpack/portable nuclear reactor that generates a powerful stream of protons that surrounds and stops a ghost. The protons come out in a stream via a device called a neutrona wand, which is attached to the reactor. (Side note: Egon and Ray always said crossing a proton stream with another could be disastrous but, in the end, crossing them was the only way to do something powerful enough to defeat Gozer.)

Once a ghost is trapped by the proton pack, the Ghostbusters roll in a Ghost Trap which is just what it sounds like. It’s a yellow and black device that looks like a shoebox on wheels and sucks in the ghosts to trap them. The Ghostbusters can also detect ghosts by using a PKE Meter; it looks like a large remote control that has light-up ears that rise up on its sides the closer you get to a spectral entity. After a being is detected, captured, and trapped, they’re brought back to the Ghostbusters headquarters (an old firehouse in Tribeca) and put into a Containment Unit located in the basement. A green light means the unit is ready to be used, a red one gives a warning. The unit was powered down in Ghostbusters one, releasing ghosts all over the city.

Finally, the Ghostbusters get around in a vehicle called the Ecto-1. It’s an old ambulance/hearse which was upgraded to be able to store all the Ghostbusters gear.

Neve Campbell revealed she was once attacked by a bear on a movie set.

Campbell, who was 17 at the time of bear attack, recalled the story during Thursday’s appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.“

“I was playing this role where she’s ‘one with the animals,’ and there was a scene where I was getting chased by a bear,” Campbell, now 48, told Kelly Clarkson. “They brought this bear on set, and they first gave me this big bottle of Coke to feed it.”

After feeding the bear, the crew had another idea for Campbell and the animal.

Instead of eating the honey off her hand, Campbell claimed the bear grabbed her by the leg.

“He grabs me by the leg, and he pulls me through the forest,” the actress said. “My mother was visiting set, and she’s screaming. The whole crew is frozen because nobody can believe what’s happening. All I can think to say is, ‘He’s biting me,’ like it’s not obvious.”

Campbell revealed she was rescued from the bear once a wrangler began throwing rocks at the animal.
