Here’s a first look at the set of ‘The Locksmith,’ filming in Las Cruces – Las Cruces Sun

LAS CRUCES – An unassuming scooter shop has been the main film location lately for “The Locksmith,” the latest in a string of movies filmed in the Las Cruces area during November.

According to a news release from the New Mexico Film Office, “The Locksmith” follows an expert locksmith who recently returned home after being released from prison. Efforts toward making a fresh start with family take a turn when he is forced to use his skills as a locksmith.

The feature film stars Ryan Phillippe (“MacGruber,” “Big Sky”), Kate Bosworth (“The Long Road Home,” “Force of Nature”) and Ving Rhames (“Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” “Pulp Fiction”) and is directed by Nicholas Harvard (“Hell or High Water,” “Yellowstone”).

Filming began Nov. 15, according to information from Film Las Cruces, and is scheduled to continue through mid-December.

Filming will take place in numerous locations throughout Doña Ana County, but has been focused recently near Apodaca Park, on the corner of Solano Drive and Madrid Avenue. Solano Scooters, a locally-owned scooter dealership in that area, was transformed inside and out to a locksmith’s shop for filming.

Las Cruces police have been directing traffic away from the shop while filming takes place.

A crew member for the film said the streets were supposed to be fully closed to traffic, but that plan was amended to take into consideration access to the nearby businesses still operating. When cameras stop rolling, traffic is allowed through.

It is unclear at this point which other locations the production will be using to film the movie. However, Film Las Cruces reported that the movie will be made entirely in Doña Ana County and will “have an estimated $2 million direct spend into the local economy.”

Behind the scenes look at where Oscar nominated movie “News of the World” was filmed in New Mexico

“News of the World,” which was nominated for multiple Oscars on Sunday night, was filmed in New Mexico.

It stars award winning actor Tom Hanks and follows the journey of a civil war veteran who moves from town to town reading articles from newspapers from across the nation. An encounter with a young girl sets him on a dangerous journey through the wilderness to return her to her family.

The film, which came out in December, was shot at El Rancho de Las Golondrinas in Santa Fe just months before the pandemic hit.

“It’s a very big production, sometimes over two, 300 people at one time,” said Vic Macias, special events and site rental manager at El rancho de Las Golondrinas.

Macias took us around the living history museum to where some of the scenes were shot.

“It was a working farm so they had a lot of different extras working out in the field, plowing the field and doing your regular farm work,” said Macias.

The historic home doubled as a movie set. It was built in the late 1800s in Raton.
In the film, it’s the home the captain brings the girl back to. We took a look inside. It’s now setup as an old classroom. The old-fashioned stove was an original and made it in the movie.

Tom Hanks and everyone was in this room,” said Macias. “It was really awesome to see him walking around, talking and telling stories between scenes and all of that. He’s a really nice guy.”

Macias said he met hanks in person, since he gets to works on set to help guide film crews to different locations.

“Five hundred acres, kike as far as you can see looking around, that’s all the property,” said
Daniel Goodman, the museum director, said the living history museum has been around for almost 50 years now. and focuses on the Spanish, Mexican and Territorial periods of the Southwest.
He believes films like “News of the World” build interest in the historic sites and New Mexico’s history.

“If someone can watch a movie say like news of the world and say, hey, where’s that filmed, maybe when we take that, we finally get around to taking that trip out to the southwest I’d kind of like to take a look at that and see that landscape and then they learn that it’s a living history museum, and then, then they might learn something while they’re out here,” said Goodman.

Macias said more than 100 productions have taken place at the property, and there are plans for more from companies like Netflix, and NBC Universal.

What is IMAX Enhanced on Disney Plus and which Marvel movies can I watch?

Disney has delivered some great news for Marvel fans and home cinema buffs, announcing that 13 of the most spectacular MCU movies are going to be available to watch at home in the more immersive IMAX Enhanced format.

They’re headlined by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which is set to land on the House of Mouse’s streaming service on Friday, November 12, along with all the other IMAX Enhanced upgrades. They include fellow recent arrival Black Widow, as well as a host of old favourites like Iron Man, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Ragnarok.

Read on as we explain what you really need to know about IMAX Enhanced, or scroll down to see a complete list of the movies getting the upgrade on Disney Plus this month.

What is IMAX Enhanced?

IMAX Enhanced is essentially an aspect ratio that fills more of the screen with cinematic goodness compared to other formats. In terms of the nitty-gritty, traditional IMAX movies are shot in 1.43:1, while Expanded Aspect Ratio delivers a 1.90:1 picture.

Doing the maths, this means it fills 26% more of the screen, and given that the 1.90:1 ratio of IMAX Enhanced is similar to the 16:9 ratio found on most TVs these days, it specifically means it fills most of a typical TV screen.

In other words, the letterbox-style of picture common when watching Marvel movies at home (where you have two large-ish black bars at the top and bottom of your TV screen) will be significantly reduced for sequences shot in Expanded Aspect Ratio, giving you a much more immersive viewing experience.

Some Marvel movies, like Avengers: Endgame, are shot entirely in the format. Others, such as Black Widow, feature select scenes (22 minutes worth, if you must know) shot in the format.

Looking further ahead, Disney has said that IMAX Enhanced movies will be getting a serise of further upgrades, including support for DTS sound, HDR10 and 4K – the idea clearly being to make the at-home Marvel viewing experience as much of a rival to the cinema as humanly possible.

Which Marvel movies can I watch in IMAX Enhanced on Disney Plus?

At the time of writing, Disney Plus has confirmed it’s making 13 Marvel movies available to watch with IMAX Enhanced from November 12.

They full list of Marvel movies available to watch in IMAX Enhanced on Disney Plus is:

‘Sara’s’ movie review: A commendable attempt at shaking a societal norm

Dislodging ideas cast in stone requires more than a gentle push. In
Sara’s , director Jude Anthany Joseph and scriptwriter Akshay Hareesh attempt to shake from its foundation one such idea, which has been accepted as normal in society, and by extension in mainstream cinema.

Sara (Anna Ben), an associate director in the film industry, wants to make a film of her own. While working on the script for her dream debut, she meets Jeevan (Sunny Wayne), who is taking a break back home, away from the hectic life in the IT industry. They fall in love, with Sara especially being drawn to him for the fact he shares her choice to remain child-free. But, as time passes, societal pressures begin to act on them.

In his third outing too, Jude Anthany Joseph sticks to a woman-centric subject, but the similarity with the previous two films ends there, except for the relationship between Sara and her father, which is similar to the one in
Ohm Shanthi Oshana . He also retains the somewhat light treatment that he gave for heavy subjects here too. It works at times, but at other times it leaves us wishing for something more concrete.

What deserves applause though is the fact that the script never diverts from the central idea, which revolves around Sara’s choice and her intense wish to become a filmmaker. The narrative is a deft balance between these two, for the societal pressures on her choice inturn has a bearing on her dream too.

It also portrays her struggles to convince producers with her script, which we are told, does not have the elements expected from a a mainstream film. As for Jude’s film, the laudable progressive stand that it takes does not always make up for the plain, lazy making in some parts. Other than Sara’s character, the rest of them appear hazy and stuck in a single tone. The transformation in some characters too appears quick and rather convenient. In real world, women like Sara will not have it easy, as the protagonist here has.

Yet, this is a brave reversal of years and years of glorification of motherhood and looking down upon those who dare to take a path of their choice. It is a study in contrast to films like the Salman Khan-starrer
Sultan , which had a woman wrestler who was working towards an Olympic gold, giving up the dream after she becomes pregnant, with the script glorifying it.

Anna Ben’s assured performance goes a long way in propping up the film even in places where it sags due to below-par writing. Despite the glitches,
Sara’s is a commendable attempt at course correction on some deeply set societal norms.

Sara’s is currently streaming on Amazon Prime

Ghost of Tsushima movie director says ‘we’re taking our time to do it right’

The director of the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie has said that he wants to “do it right”.

In a new interview with IGN, which took place on the red carpet for The Matrix: Resurrections, Chad Stahelski said: “You know how video game adaptions can go. So we’re taking our time and doing it right. We’re working very closely with the game developers to make sure we stick to what’s great about it.”

While the filmmaker conceded that the crew are still in the early stages of production, and have yet to finalise a script, he assured fans of the series that players: “Would be very happy with what we’re working on.”

Stahelski is best known for directing the John Wick films.

Released on August 20, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut included a number of new additions to the original 2020 PS4 release, including a new Iki Island expansion and several PS5-only features.

In VGC’s Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut review, we called the game “the perfect excuse to go back to the island,” adding: “The game has never looked better, and now stands toe-to-toe with the other Sony tentpoles on the platform.

“While the gameplay changes aren’t enough to shake the nagging feelings or repetitiveness, engaging combat and a well-told story are more than enough reasons to play through the game again.”

This isn’t the only PlayStation franchise currently being adapted for the big, or small screen. Naughty Dog‘s The Last of Us is currently being adapted into a series for HBO.

Game of Thrones actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are portraying the show’s lead characters, Joel and Ellie. Nico Parker (Dumbo), the daughter of actress Thandie Newton, is playing Joel’s daughter Sarah, while Gabriel Luna (Agents of Shield) stars as Joel’s brother Tommy.

Kate on Netflix: The movie was accused of anti-Asian violence. Now it’s No. 1.

Full US Trailer for Acclaimed Belgian Film ‘Playground’ About Bullying

“What did you see?” Film Movement has unveiled an official US trailer for an acclaimed Belgian indie film titled Playground, also known as Un Monde (A World) in French. The film premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize, before stopping by other festivals throughout this year. Seven-year-old Nora and her big brother Abel are back to school. When Nora witnesses Abel being bullied by other kids, she rushes to protect him, but Abel forces her to remain silent. Caught in a conflict of loyalty, Nora will ultimately try to find her place, torn between children’s and adults’ worlds. “Transposing the gritty realism of such filmmakers as Jacques Audiard and the Dardennes Brothers to the inner world of kids, Wandel crafts an empathetic and visceral portrait of the cruelty of children, and the failure of adults to protect them.” It’s also Begium’s submission to the Academy Awards. The film stars Maya Vanderbeque, Günter Duret, Karim Leklou, Laura Verlinden. Arriving early 2022 in the US.

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Laura Wandel’s Playground, direct from YouTube:

The everyday reality of grade school is seen from a child’s-eye-view as an obstacle course of degradation and abuse. Following 7-year-old Nora and her big brother Abel, we see Nora struggling to fit in before finding her place on the schoolyard. One day, she notices Abel being bullied by other kids, and though she rushes to protect him, Abel forces her to remain silent, while he endures more humiliation and harassment by his peers. Playground, originally known as Un Monde in French, is both written and directed by Belgian filmmaker Laura Wandel, making her feature directorial debut after a few short films and other TV work previously. Produced by Stéphane Lhoest. This initially premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival playing in the Un Certain Regard section. Film Movement will release Wandel’s Playground in select US theaters starting sometime in early 2022. It’s also playing at the Palm Springs Film Festival in January. Interested?

World can ill-afford Russia-NATO war over Ukraine when pandemic continues to put health of millions at risk

Recently, US government officials estimated that an armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine could kill 25,000 to 50,000 civilians, 5,000 to 25,000 Ukrainian military personnel, and 3,000 to 10,000 Russian soldiers. It could also generate 1 to 5 million refugees. Any further escalation could even lead to use of nuclear weapons which would be catastrophic.

Dr. Barry S Levy, Adjunct Professor of Public Health, Tufts University School of Medicine in a presentation at an event organized by International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) on February 19 warned of serious consequences of conventional war.

According to him, in case of war there is increase in malnutrition, particularly among women and children. There is rise in communicable diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, respiratory diseases, tuberculosis. Mental disorders like depression, posttraumatic stress disorder and suicide increase. Reproductive health suffers badly. Non-communicable diseases like heart diseases, cancers, kidney diseases too rise.

Since Ukraine has 17% population above the age of 65, there is a danger that indirect death rate would be much higher than in case of the invasion of Iraq since this group of population is more vulnerable.

Zeeshan Malik’s death in police custody: Fact finding team points at irregularities, torture

Malik was pronounced dead at DDU hospital on February 14, 2022. The police authorities say Malik died due to illness, but the family cited bruise marks and broken bones on Malik’s body as proof of custodial murder in Tihar Jail.

On February 17, 2022, the family was handed over the body after the postmortem. Back at home, as ablution was being performed on the body before burial, the family members said they saw that Malik’s bones had been broken at several places, including ribs and elbows etc. Before the burial the family took pictures of the body to have a record of the injuries.

When the fact-finding team of Janhastakshep enquired whether the statutory guidelines regarding ‘Standard Operating Procedure’ (SOP) issued by NHRC have been followed in the case of custodial death of Malik, it raised more questions than answers.

When the Janhastakshep team met the Director General of Prison Services, Sandeep Goyal, he claimed he did not have any knowledge regarding the matter and directed them to speak with Hukum Chand, the superintendent of Central Jail 5 (where Malik had been lodged). Chand refused to speak to the team.

When the team approached the DG’s office again on February 22, 2022, they were directed to Zorawar Singh, the law officer of the jail. When the team asked Singh if an inquest had been instituted into Malik’s death, he evaded the question. Instead, he replied that Malik was a drug addict, and he suffered from some medical condition which led to lowering of platelet count in his blood. As a result of this, he had profuse internal bleeding in the body leading to his death.
