The Philadelphia Film Center is located at 1412 Chestnut St. and the PFS Bourse Theater is at the corner of Fourth and Ranstead streets.

James Norton: Why making Nowhere Special made me sob and want children

Screen Daily’s Fionnuala Halligan wrote about Nowhere Special at Venice Film Festival, saying: “When we demand that cinema opens up to under-represented voices, John is one of them: white, poor, uneducated, alone, and with a troubled past.

Free movies in Clark Park include ‘Concrete Cowboy,’ ‘Black Panther’

Suspect arrested in movie theater shooting that wounded TikTok star, killed teen

A man is in custody in connection with the shooting at a California movie theater Monday night that left a woman dead and a well-known TikTok user in critical condition, police said Wednesday.

Rylee Goodrich, 18, and Anthony Barajas, 19, were at a showing of “The Forever Purge” at a movie theater in Corona, California, on Monday, police said. The teens are friends and went to watch the movie together, according to police. Theater staff found them with gunshot wounds after the movie, according to police.

Goodrich died at the scene, and Barajas is on life support at a local hospital, police said.

On Tuesday, police arrested Joseph Jimenez, 20, at his home in El Cerrito, an unincorporated area of Corona. Police searched the suspect’s home and found a firearm and additional evidence related to the movie theater crime scene, they said.

“The firearm matched the caliber of the weapon used in the murder,” said police in a press release.

Jimenez is being held on $2 million bail and charged with murder, attempted murder and robbery. CNN has reached out to the Riverside County public defender’s office to determine if Jimenez has retained legal representation.

Josh Lucas and a Purger in 'The Forever Purge,' directed by Everardo Valerio Gout.

“The Forever Purge,” which debuted in theaters earlier this month, is the fifth movie in the “Purge” franchise. Each sequel is based on the premise that a totalitarian government has created one night each year where everything, including murder, is legal.

There were fewer than 10 people in the theater where Goodrich and Barajas were shot, Corona Police Capt. Paul Mercado told CNN, yet it has not been determined if the shooting happened during or after the movie.

“They were shot in the head,” Corona Police Corporal Tobias Kouroubacalis told CNN in an email. “We will not know how many times or the exact entry point of the bullet(s) until the coroner performs their autopsies and writes their reports.”

CNN has contacted the theater for comment but has not heard back.

An unprovoked attack

Police believe that that Jimenez, who had a movie ticket, didn’t know the victims and didn’t have any prior contact with them.

“It’s an unfortunate turn of events here,” said Mercado. “The public here are really looking for a motive. Right now, there is no motive. It’s an unprovoked attack.”

Jimenez was arrested for allegedly shooting two people in a movie theater in Corona, California.

Police said that items were taken and “robbery is part of what happened during that crime,” but that they are not calling it a motive in the shooting, Kouroubacalis said during a press conference held on Wednesday.

“We can’t imagine the significant amount of pain both the family and friends are feeling right now,” said Kouroubacalis. “But we hope the suspect’s arrest will bring some relief knowing that he’s in jail now.”

He added that police believe Jimenez acted alone.

A TikTok enthusiast, a runner with a ‘great heart’

Barajas has nearly 930,000 followers on TikTok and recently posted video updates from a family vacation. During high school, he was a standout soccer player at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, according to CNN affiliate KABC.

Goodrich attended Corona High School, according to KABC, and played volleyball, ran track and was also a cheerleader. After high school, she received a college scholarship for Grand Canyon University’s STEM program. She was in town visiting family for the summer.

Her cousin, Ashley Cole, told KABC she had a “great heart” and always willing to helping others.

Jimenez is expected to appear before a judge for arraignment in the next couple days, according to Kouroubacalis.

CNN’s Brian Lowry and Jessica Flynn contributed to this report.

Denver’s historic, beleaguered Esquire Theatre is finally reopening

Denver’s historic Esquire Theatre will reopen on May 21, operator Landmark Theatres announced today, preceded by Landmark’s Greenwood Village Theater on May 14, as well as a quartet of Front Range Regal UA locations.

However, the Esquire comes first in several ways: Neighborhood residents and preservationists feared the worst for the classic movie house, which opened in 1927 as the Hiawatha Theatre, when Landmark stopped exhibiting movies there after a damaging water-main break, company officials said in 2019.

Less than a year after their pricey renovation, the pandemic hit. It was a fast trip to the bottom for the Esquire, as Landmark stopped paying rent on the property in April 2020, according to commercial real estate firm Unique Properties — which then tried to sell the building for $3.3 million in August.

Landmark appears to be back in good standing, however, with building owners Downing Street (the family LLC that controls the property) and screenings will resume May 21. (Officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.) Titles have not yet been announced.

“At present, we are working with a very small staff, so thank you for bearing with us,” Landmark officials wrote on the company’s Denver website. “We are here for you and appreciate receiving your requests, press clippings and feedback. When we are able to send individual media alerts for each theatre, we sure will!”

By the end of the month, all of Landmark’s Denver locations, including the Mayan Theatre, will have reopened except for the Chez Artiste.

Regal, which operates some of the metro area’s biggest and most popular movie houses, on Thursday also announced a quartet of locations opening along the Front Range.

The surprise announcement, effective immediately (Thursday, May 7), covers the company’s Regal Colorado Mills IMAX RPX (14500 W. Colfax Ave. in Lakewood), Regal Denver Pavilions 4DX RPX (500 16th St. in Denver Pavilions); Regal UA Meadows (9355 Park Meadows Drive in Littleton); and Regal Village at The Peaks RPX (1230 S. Hover Road in Longmont).

Missing from the list was the company’s massive multiplex, the Regal UA Colorado Center, at I-25 and Colorado Boulevard, which also features one of Colorado’s busiest IMAX screens.

Guy Ritchie’s “Wrath of Man” will lead the modest schedule of new movies, which includes “Mortal Kombat” and “Godzilla vs. Kong” (both also showing on HBO Max) and “a full slate of additional titles,” according to a company press statement. Future releases opening in the coming weeks include ‘A Quite Place Part II’ and ‘F9.’ “

Australia news LIVE: COVID cases continue to grow in NSW and Queensland as lockdowns continue; Victoria records two new local cases

Almost 7000 people are waiting on their application for travel into Victoria from “red” and “extreme” zones to be considered, with health authorities processing around 1000 exemption applications a day.

Victorian Health Department deputy secretary Kate Matson said due to the volume of applications from those in NSW and Queensland, they would be prioritising “emergency” applications.

Each application has to be independently considered by the department’s public health team.

“I do want to note that approving those exemptions is rare,” she said at today’s coronavirus briefing.

“Most people who apply will not be successful in getting that exemption. For those who do, it tends to be some really compelling compassionate or emergency grounds, such as end of life reasons, to attend funerals and so on.

“We really do understand for people in those difficult circumstances it can be really stressful, waiting for the exemption results, and I reassure you that we are working through those as quickly as we can.”

There are now just 56 exposure sites listed in Victoria, down from the more than 300 exposure sites listed at the height of the Victoria outbreak.

Of the two new local cases announced in Victoria today, one was a household contact of a person who went to AAMI for the Wallabies rugby game, and the other positive case is a household contact of the COVID-positive Moonee Valley traffic controller.

Eight Victorians remain in hospital with COVID-19, with three people in intensive care.
