RSS Production House’s producer Sushil Sachdeva

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 21 (ANI/BusinessWire India): RSS Production House has finished shooting for the upcoming movie ‘Ajmer 1992’ based on real life events in 1992 with a stellar cast starring Zarina Wahab, Karan Verma, Rajesh Sharma, Sayaji Shinde, Mahesh Balraj, and Sumit Singh in the lead roles.

The plot of the movie unfolds one of the biggest rape scandals across the world where hundreds of girls were blackmailed into being brutally raped by certain powerful people. Most of the girls were from affluent families, daughters of IAS and IPS officers yet the culprits were not brought to justice.

“We made this film so that the entire country knows what the young college girls had to go through. This is all we have tried to show to the public,” said Sushil Sachdeva, producer.

Sushil Sachdeva was always passionate about content production representing the ground reality and struggles of life. He started his journey as an entrepreneur when he met Pushpinder Singh, a director who narrated to him multiple movie scripts. But it was Ajmer 1992 that caught his attention. “It was a realistic story and listening to the plight of the young girls drove me to produce the story,” said the producer.

It took around 2-3 years for Sushil Sachdeva to finalise the script and decide the location, ie, Kishangarh in Ajmer and Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh. “The location has the complete look and feel of the old Ajmer of the 1990s,” said Sachdeva.

It was difficult to secure approvals for shooting the film during the covid lockdown. “The concept of the film was controversial and going through the right kind of politicians for approval was a tough task,” he said. RSS Production House was determined to successfully complete the shooting of the film and it was wrapped up by mid-August.

The vision of RSS Production House is to highlight realistic and content-driven cinema. “I am not interested in comedy films but looking for good content that should hit the public,” he stated.

Sushil Sachdeva also wants to produce regional content like the Punjabi cinema. He adds that Punjabi is very close to his heart as he is natively from Ludhiana, Punjab. He is keen on producing courtroom drama.

The Production House is simultaneously looking for new projects and is meeting with the writers every day. They have 2-3 films coming this year and a web series next year.

Sachdeva is looking for an OTT release of the film which will take place by December.

#BigStory: Bollywood worried as restrictions imposed in the wake of second Covid-19 wave threaten to brin

Just when Bollywood seemed to be getting back on track with releases being planned and film shoots announced, a second surge in the number of Covid-19 cases has brought everything back to square one. With a night curfew imposed for the past one week, filmmakers are no longer able to stick to their schedules that included post sundown scenes. And now, with the state staring at another lockdown, the date diaries might be further thrown astray. For this week’s #BigStory, we take stock of how Bollywood is putting up a brave front in the face of adversity, even as the scepter of 2020 threatens to make a comeback.

Movie releases postponed

At least three films were postponed last minute—Rana Daggubati-starrer ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’ was held back just a few days before the release, followed by Yash Raj Films announcing the postponement of ‘Bunty Aur Babli 2’, and Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi-starrer ‘Chehre’ pulling back from theatres for now. The postponement of theatrical release dates is an indicator that all is not well, and producers are still not confident that the audience will come back to the theatres anytime soon.

Atul Mohan (Trade analyst): The scenario is again very stressful for Bollywood

Lending an insight into Bollywood’s dilemma, trade analyst Atul Mohan says, “The scenario is again very stressful for Bollywood. We had thought that business was back to normal, but we were wrong. The second wave of Covid has hit us hard again. So far, three movies have announced that they are being postponed, and a few more are likely to follow in the days to come. Weekend lockdown, night curfews in several cities and states, procuring a negative Covid report before entering malls, which house cinema halls, and 50 per cent occupancy in major markets like Mumbai and Maharashtra, are all impacting the business’’.

Akshaye Rathi (Exhibitor): The government needs to balance out saving livelihoods along with lives

While producers are ducking from the impact of the second surge by delaying the release of their films, cinema hall owners are bearing the brunt of the night curfew. Exhibitor Akshaye Rathi shares, “I am not sure if the night curfew and restriction is going to help in any way. The only thing that needs to be controlled is the discipline and the sincerity with which people follow protocols. The onus needs to be put back on citizens, rather than penalising enterprises that have already suffered over the last year. Unemployment, as a problem, is real. There are enterprises that are functioning on a hand-to-mouth basis right now. And to penalise them further, without any kind of help or support or financial relief from the government, is completely unfair. The government needs to balance out saving livelihoods along with lives, and for that, these kinds of measures and restrictions will not really help.’’

2

The makers of ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’ held back the theatrical release of the film in Hindi but went ahead and released the Telugu and Tamil version of the film, which trade pundits feel was a bad idea. “Our products have a finite shelf life. If you try and release a film in certain states and not in others, it is not that film will do anything later. By then, piracy would’ve killed it. And there are so many filmmakers who are waiting with their films, who have been bearing the mounting costs. For them, to hold on any longer, may not be easy. The government needs to take into account that the livelihood of millions of people in the state is at stake here. Let’s focus on the right measures–accelerating the vaccination drive, penalising citizens who are not following Covid protocols,” he further suggests.

Sanjay Ghai (Exhibitor): Our industry works on the basis of Maharashtra, and if that state is under a curfew, we are bound to suffer

Exhibitor Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Cinemas New Delhi shares, “Our industry works on the basis of Maharashtra, and if that state is under a curfew, we are bound to suffer in our business. After one whole year or no business, the month of March brought some relief with ‘Roohi’, ‘Mumbai Saga’ and ‘Godzilla’ bringing in some decent business for exhibitors. The announcement of ‘Chehre’ getting pushed has disappointed exhibitors, now we will have to run cinemas with shows of old movies and dubbed South films, which is not a solution. If the government is planning a lockdown, I would like to ask them what compensation are they going to offer to our sector which has suffered immensely. Patient
ko toh aap oxygen de rahe hain hamari toh haalat patient se jyada kharab hai (You are providing patients with oxygen, but we are worse off than them)”.

Nitin Datar (Exhibitor): We have been forced to pay all the charges, and no relief has been provided to us by the government

Nitin Datar of Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association informs that several cinema halls will close down and there are some who have shut shop already after the government diktat allowing 50 per cent occupancy. With night curfews, the last two shows of single screens have also been ruled out now. Nitin says, “The government is not giving us the benefit that we are supposed to get. As per the law, the property tax is waived off if the nation is hit with a natural calamity. Also, as per the Madras High Court order, if electricity is not consumed, the minimum and demand charge should not be levied on us, but the government has ignored all of these requests made by the association. We reopened after we were told that the Covid situation is under control, and within three weeks the numbers are up. It is simply not our fault if you cannot control the surge; as it is we had no business for the last year, and just when things were looking up again, this break. Multiplexes are more or less on rent, but we, single-screen owners, own the property–multiplexes are not losing much; as it is they have thrown out a lot of people. But here, we have been forced to pay all the charges, and no relief has been provided to us by the government.”

11

Revealing the manner in which business has been hit due to Covid, Nitin adds, “If the Bombay Circuit is hit with no release it will have a ripple effect in Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, and a bit of CP and Berar, and you know the business comes from Bombay and Delhi. If Bombay goes, business goes. We have also challenged the government order of the ’70s that states if a cinema owner wants to redevelop the property, he will have to have a theatre on the premises. Today, we have multiple avenues of entertainment and theatre is not the only place, like it used to be in the past. Then why are we being forced to bear the burden to entertain others–that is for public benefit. We are ready to offer the government to take our property on lease and run cinema halls.”

Deepesh Shah (Marketing executive): As of now, every movie releasing is a loss

Speaking about the loss that films are facing because of the night curfew imposed in Maharashtra, marketing whiz Deepesh Shah says, “With the night curfew, the path to recovery for the film industry has been pushed ahead by 4-5 months. Getting back audiences is going to be a challenge but good content will surely get footfalls. However, the overall box office collection will see a huge drop. The Rs 100 crore mark will not be easy to achieve. As of now, every movie releasing is a loss. ‘Mumbai Saga’ should have been a Rs 70 crore-plus film, projected number on the low side, ‘Sania’ should have at least earned Rs 50 crore, ‘Roohi’ would have made Rs 60 crore but none of the movies are going to achieve these projected numbers.”

Is pushing film releases the right move?

While Bollywood revamped its release date calendar as soon as theatres opened up, the current scenario might force filmmakers to revisit their dates. Buzz is that the Rohit Shetty-directed ‘Sooryavanshi’, which was scheduled to hit screens on April 30, could be held back too. “It is tough to say whether it is a good idea to move the films and then come in the middle of a lot of clutter. Maybe we can negotiate to reduce the window between the theatre and other platforms. This will allow the producer to earn more from other platforms – satellite or OTT. We can plan out a scenario in which producers can space out the releases of all the tent pole films a week or two apart so that each film can optimise revenues; plan a scenario we all can co-exist in, without damaging each other,” points out exhibitor Akshaye Rathi.

What Bollywood feels

Bollywood had announced a promising slate of films for the coming months, with biggies like ’83, ‘Thalaivi’, ‘Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’, and ‘Bell Bottom’ gearing up to entertain on the big screen. However, a domino effect is being predicted as filmmakers are deferring releases further.

Aashish Singh (Producer): It is also about the health of the people, so let us not just concentrate on the business side

Aashish Singh, CEO of Lyca Films, feels that safety should be of utmost importance. He asserts, “Mumbai, Maharashtra is a big market and we are facing a challenge there. The cases are going up and it may take a couple of months before things are slightly better on the exhibition side. But it is also about the health of the people, so let us not just concentrate on the business side. We are hoping that the vaccination drive will definitely have a positive impact a couple of months down the line.”

Hansal Mehta (Filmmaker): If we are not allowed to shoot, the industry will go from being in the ICU to becomingbrain dead

And it is not just the movie-watching experience that is being affected, procuring permissions for night shoots is also proving to be difficult with an increase in the number of cases. Hansal Mehta, who delivered one of the biggest OTT series during the lockdown, ‘Scam 1992’, is now worried about shooting his upcoming projects. He rues, “Even though we are saying that we will be in a bubble, shoot in one location, and follow all the SOPs, the permissions are difficult to come by. I cannot invest in a set without knowing what the permission situation is like. We cannot afford to have shootings being stopped if the industry is to survive. The content will be consumed in any case, whether it is theatrical or OTT release, but the content creation industry must be kept alive, otherwise, it will become disastrous. Whenever theatres open, they should have content to play. If we are not allowed to shoot, the industry will go from being in the ICU to becoming brain dead.”

BN Tiwari (FWICE president): BMC is not entertaining permissions for outdoor locations

FWICE president BN Tiwari, when contacted, informed that securing shoot permissions are bound to become an issue. “We have just been told that choreographer Ganesh Acharya is going to Hyderabad to shoot a song for Dharma Productions. As it is a lot of filmmakers are shooting in Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad, and other cities, and are avoiding Maharashtra. BMC is not entertaining permissions for outdoor locations. People are coming to us with verbal complaints but no official complaint has been filed with us”.

Mohit Chadda (Actor): By releasing ‘Flight’ we are helping theatres sustain

Actor Mohit Chadda, whose film ‘Flight’ released on Friday, has a positive approach to the present situation. “It is not only about Maharashtra, but the rest of the country too, where cinemas are open. Releasing ‘Flight’ is our own little way to help them sustain themselves. We are worried about the business too but it is not right to announce the release date and not proceed with it. I know a lot of producers have postponed the release of their films and I understand they have their own valid points, besides they are very big films and have a lot of money at stake but our logic is simple,
agar hum hi nahi support karenge cinemas ko, toh kaun karega (If we, ourselves, don’t support cinemas, who will)
.

JD Majethia (Producer): Shifting location is not a good solution for now

However, JD Majethia of IFPTC, who is shooting his shows in the city, says that there is no need to panic as another lockdown won’t be imposed, as assured by the government. “There is no official announcement of a lockdown for now and besides that, almost every state has the impact of virus spread. We have our sets where we can keep the situation under control which becomes difficult in other states for now. All the states have different entry permissions for now like Gujarat requires everyone to undergo an RT-PCR test and test negative. Shifting location is not a good solution for now,” he affirms.

OTT emerging as the champion?

From a commercial masala entertainer like ‘Coolie No 1’ to a fun biopic like ‘Shakuntala Devi’, several films released on OTT platforms last year. Aashish Singh feels that streaming services may have done some damage to theatrical releases, but in the long run, cinemas will continue to rule hearts. “OTT is good for the overall business. Producers who are financially stuck, at least have a way out. In the long run, both will complement each other. OTT cannot buy big-ticket films, theatrical films will have to complement the platforms. In the short term, it is eating into the business of theatrical releases, but now so many films are lined up for theatres, so, I don’t think it will matter if a few go on OTT,” he opines.

4

Om Raut (Director): If there are no cinema halls, movies will go to OTT

Filmmaker Om Raut’s Blockbuster directorial ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’ was one of the last big films to release in theatres before the lockdown. While he is busy churning out yet another lavish period drama, Om shares that one needs to weigh in all the situations. Sharing that OTT and theatres are here to co-exist, the director says, “If there are no cinema halls, movies will go to OTT, but they will co-exist. Rohit (Shetty) has kept his film (‘Sooryavanshi’) for theaters, which is phenomenal. He is putting in so much effort in keeping that film, it is great dedication and an expensive affair. At the same time, there are films that cannot be held back, and for good reasons, they have gone to OTT, which may not have been their first choice. But they had to do it because of the pandemic. We all were sitting at home, so why can’t films also go to OTT, it is a very normal thing. Our job is to entertain. We have to accept the facts and move on”.

Twitter Blue Ticks Restored For Accounts Of RSS Chief, Others

Mohan Bhagwat is chief of the RSS, the ideological parent of the ruling BJP.

New Delhi:

Five senior functionaries of the ruling BJP’s ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) lost their blue tick verification badges on Twitter for several hours today, shortly after similar action against the personal account of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu that was overturned on Saturday.

The blue tick was back by evening for the accounts of all the five RSS functionaries.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagawat, his colleagues Suresh Soni, Arun Kumar, Suresh Joshi and Krishna Kumar were among the accounts that lost the verification badges for some time today, according to sources in the right-wing volunteer organisation.

The blue tick purge has set up a new flashpoint between the government and Twitter, who have been in an escalating standoff since the social media company classified certain posts by a few BJP leaders targeting the opposition Congress as “manipulated”.

Mr Naidu’s blue tick was restored within a few hours, reportedly when objections were raised by the Vice President’s office. The Ministry of Electronics and IT is likely to issue notice to Twitter asking why this was done without “prior intimation”. “This is contempt of a constitutional post. Twitter wants to test India’s patience,” government sources said.

Like Mr Naidu, the verification badges for the RSS functionaries were dropped for “inactivity” amid a recent revival of the verification process after a pause of few years that has seen Twitter review verified accounts and withdraw blue badges from inactive ones, NDTV has learnt.

“Twitter’s rule says that if you have not logged in for the past six months, the account will be considered inactive and verification status will be withdrawn. All the RSS leaders had not tweeted anything in a while. Their accounts were created to avoid impersonation,” said a source in the RSS.

Twitter had confirmed the policy earlier in the day when asked about the move on Venkaiah Naidu’s personal account, saying it had been inactive since 2020 and no one had logged in in the last six months.

Government sources, however, called it an outrageous act against the “Number 2” constitutional head of the country. They pointed out that the accounts of former Union Ministers Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj had stayed verified long after their death in 2019.

The stance signalled a further deterioration of ties between the government and Twitter who have clashed over a range of issues including its stand on new digital rules for social media sites and the discrediting of BJP leaders’ tweets.

The Suicide Squad’s Gag Reel Is Finger-Lickin’ Good

If there’s a better afternoon treat than a four-minute gag real from director James Gunn’s wonderfully wicked The Suicide Squad, chances are we’re not getting one today. One punny warning, though—this gag reel might actually make you gag, depending on how you feel after watching James’ brother Sean feverishly lick a window as Weasel.

Seriously, this has everything you want in a gag reel. Flubbed lines. Actors breaking into laughs. Technical issues. People falling. Silly and/or dirty improv by comedians like Javelin actor Flula Borg. Profanity. Animals going out of control, in this case to Margot Robbie’s panicked amusement. A look at how absurd shooting the movie was in reality, especially the CGI characters like Weasel and King Shark (physically performed by Steve Agee), before the CGI was put in. A glorious nut shot, courtesy of Elba inadvertently tossing a gun into David Dastmalchian’s groin. And, of course, everyone’s favorite thing to watch: John Cena sucking on a severed finger.

For some reason, the thing that gives me the most joy is Michael Rooker, laughing so hard he can barely squeak out a few words, while wearing that unfathomably dumb Savant wig. My second favorite part is how Warner Bros. felt it necessary to bleep out the gag reel’s dirty words for a movie that was extremely R-rated, including the dialogue (which was also written by James Gunn).

The Suicide Squad, which also starred Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Peter Capaldi, Daniela Melchior, Alice Braga, Jai Courtney, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, and many more, is unfortunately no longer streaming on HBO Max, having left the streaming service on September 5, and it won’t be available on Blu-ray until October 26. But you can still rent it on Amazon or iTunes for the not inconsiderable sum of $24.99.

RSS mouthpiece claims Infosys is trying to destabilise Indian economy

RSS associated mouthpiece Panchjanya has accused Infosys of acting at the behest of anti-national forces and more, due to the glitches in the new Income Tax portal. Infosys won the contract for the new portal in 2018, and the portal was launched in June. Over two months later, glitches continue to mar the site. The RSS mouthpiece also questioned opposition party involvement and about potential influence of China and ISI over the glitches.  .

Panchjanya is a weekly magazine, and for the magazine’s September 5 edition, the magazine has decided to take on Infosys. While questioning if Infosys is as negligent in services it exports, the article also raises the point about Infosys being the vendor which built the GST portal and the MCA-21 portal as well, which too was marred by glitches.

“There are allegations that Infosys management is deliberately trying to destabilise the Indian economy,” the report says, without mention of who has made the allegation and the proof to back this allegation. The article, written by Chandra Prakash, goes on to question how Infosys always takes important government projects by bidding so low, and says that the glitches have broken the confidence of taxpayers. Infosys was awarded the contract after an open tender, according to the Union government.

“Is it that some anti-national power is trying to hurt India’s economic interests through Infosys? We do not have any solid evidence to say this, but looking at the history and circumstances of the company, some facts may be seen in this allegation,” the piece says.

The article further goes on to say that Infosys has been accused many times of helping “Naxalites, leftists and tukde-tukde gangs”, and that there is direct or indirect cooperation of Infosys in many “disruptive activities” in the country.

It also adds that Infosys is believed to fund propaganda websites and fact checkers. It alleges that beneficiaries of Infosys’ charity (believed to be the Infosys Foundation) are some organizations engaged in spreading caste hatred as well. “Shouldn’t the promoters of Infosys be asked what are the reasons behind its funding to anti-national and anarchist organisations?” it questions. (You can check the list of grants by the Infosys Foundation here).

The article then claims that the reason to suspect a conspiracy is political as well, and that Opposition leaders are silent on this. “People are asking whether some private companies are trying to create disorder at the behest of the Congress?” it says.

Furthermore, it says that founder Narayana Murthy’s opposition to the current dispensation is known, that Nandan Nilekani has contested elections on a Congress ticket, and Infosys puts people of a particular ideology in important positions.

“If such a company will take important contracts from the Government of India, then will there not be a possibility of influence of China and ISI in it?” the article claims.

It blames the glitches of the I-T portal on corrupt government bureaucracy, stating that it worked properly after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman intervened. A financial penalty can be levied on the company and it can be blacklisted for future, it adds.

The piece also brings George Soros into the picture, and says that Infosys’ mess is a sign of a bigger conspiracy. It refers to the SONG Fund that involved Soros’ Open Society Foundation and Google.org — and that they bought a company related to Aadhaar and then closed it down a few days later — and links it to an allegation that this deal was for stealing Aadhaar data.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Infosys CEO Salil Parekh in August and told him about the government’s “deep disappointment and concern” over the glitches in the new income tax filing portal and set September 15 as the deadline for the software major to resolve all snags.

Skrillex Sells Spectacular Malibu Beach House for $17.5 million

The wait is finally over for some of the biggest films and shows delayed by the pandemic

Dozens of major film and television productions were put on hold when the pandemic hit, only to be followed by repeated false starts and rescheduling as the COVID-19 crisis kept spiking. But the fall season is a prime release spot for Blockbusters, TV hits and awards contenders — and this year could be an embarrassment of riches.

With so many films and television shows having been delayed into fall 2021, viewers can expect to see new fare from some of their favourite filmmakers, highly anticipated Marvel movies, the return of popular television shows (Succession fans, it’s your moment!) and other exciting additions to the small screen.

The wait is finally over.

Old story with a fresh twist

The cast of The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark appear in a still from the film. (Warner Bros. )

In Dune (Oct. 22), Timothée Chalamet plays a young noble who journeys with his family to a treacherous planet where a mysterious resource grants immeasurable power to anyone who possesses it. Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s penchant for large-scale productions with gripping visuals and superstar casts make Dune an exciting option for a trip to the theatre or at-home viewing on HBO Max.

Meanwhile, Sopranos film prequel The Many Saints of Newark (Sep. 24) arrives after a one-year delay, taking viewers back to a teenage Tony Soprano’s first encounters with the New Jersey Mafia. Actor Michael Gandolfini takes over the iconic role from his late father, James Gandolfini, who played Tony on the HBO series that ran from 1999 to 2007.

The film will be released in theatres and on HBO Max the same day, with creator David Chase telling Deadline that he “would never have made it” had he known the film would have a hybrid release.

In a slightly unusual approach during the pandemic, the latest James Bond film, No Time To Die (Oct. 8), will have a traditional theatrical release. It’s the longest Bond film in the franchise’s history, clocking in at two hours and 43 minutes, and Daniel Craig’s last as 007.

After delays, Marvel reigns supreme

Let there be Marvel! Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Oct. 15), the sequel to 2018’s Venom, is nearly here after four COVID-related postponements. Its initial release will be exclusive to theatres. Marvel’s strategic timeline of film releases was heavily disrupted by the pandemic, with part of its schedule bumped to 2023.

But fans won’t have to wait much longer for two other highly anticipated Marvel projects. Nomadland director Chloé Zhao helms Eternals (Nov. 5), in which an immortal alien race emerges from their earthly hibernation to battle their deviant equivalents and save humanity. The film will have its initial release in theatres, after which it will be available on Disney Plus starting Dec. 20.

Rumours have been swirling that Spider-Man: No Way Home (Dec. 17) will see star Tom Holland joined by the ghosts of Peter Parker past: Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. For three generations of Spider-Man fans it’s sure to be a blast, with confirmed appearances by Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and Alfred Molina’s Dr. Octopus. For now, only a theatrical release is scheduled.

Auteurs are back with big stars

Director Wes Anderson has called The French Dispatch (Oct. 22) a “love letter to journalists,” chronicling the postwar goings-on of an American newspaper’s bureau in France. As usual, Anderson’s cast is stacked: regulars Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton and Adrien Brody are back, with Timothée Chalamet and Benicio Del Toro joining the director’s roster of stars.

Ridley Scott’s historical drama The Last Duel (Oct. 15) was co-written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, with the latter starring as a knight who challenges a rival to a duel after the foe violates his wife.

Baby Driver director Edgar Wright is behind Last Night in Soho (Oct. 22), a neon-lit horror flick about a young fashion designer who travels back in time and winds up in the body of a beloved 1960s nightclub singer, soon realizing that the young performer’s life is a nightmare. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy of The Queen’s Gambit.

Film honourable mentions: Halloween Kills (Oct. 15), King Richard (Nov. 19), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (Nov. 19), House of Gucci (Nov. 24), The Matrix Resurrections (Dec. 22), West Side Story (fall release date TBA)

The popular kids of TV return

The cast of Succession appears in this photo from HBO. A third season of the popular show will premiere on Oct. 17. (HBO)

The family TV viewers love to hate the most is back. On the third season of hit HBO show Succession (Oct. 17), the Roys must choose sides in Kendall and Logan’s bitter fight for control of the family’s multibillion-dollar media conglomerate. Succession was riding high when the Season 2 finale aired back in October 2019, scoring more than one million viewers. We’ll soon learn whether the show can maintain that momentum after COVID-19 production delays.

Also returning for a third season is Netflix’s Sex Education (Sep. 17). High schooler Otis has successfully established an illicit sex therapy clinic at his school — but a new headmistress arrives, threatening to crack down on the school’s naughty reputation.

And after five seasons on HBO, Insecure (Oct 24.) will take its final bow. The L.A. comedy-drama follows Issa as her professional, social and romantic lives ebb and flow.

A handful of new(ish) shows

ABC’s The Wonder Years reboot premieres on Sep. 22 and follows a family in Montgomery, Ala., during the 1960s. (ABC)

In a reimagining of a show that premiered in 1988, The Wonder Years (Sep. 22) follows young Dean Williams as he reflects on his childhood in an upper-middle class Black family in Montgomery, Ala., during the 1960s. Don Cheadle provides voiceover as the adult version of Dean.

Years after he stepped down from hosting Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Jon Stewart is back with The Problem With Jon Stewart (Sep. 30), a current affairs show that he cheekily described as “The Daily Show, but less entertaining.” While many welcomed the news with excitement, some are skeptical of Stewart’s place in the current political conversation.

On Netflix, sci-fi noir Cowboy Bebop (Nov. 19) gets the live-action treatment with John Cho in the lead role. The original Japanese anime aired in 1998.

Movie stars on TV

Launching its second season after shutting down production in March 2020, Apple TV’s The Morning Show (Sep. 17) is a success thanks to its megawatt star power — Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon — and its clever take on timely subject matter.
