Val Kilmer’s personal home movies have been transformed into a documentary that will premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Throughout his career, the actor has amassed hundreds of hours of film and videotape that were stored in boxes stacked up in a garage, The Hollywood Reporter revealed on Monday. It features footage the 61-year-old made as a child with his brothers Mark and Wesley while growing up in the Los Angeles suburb of Chatsworth.

According to the outlet, Wesley, known as the director among the trio, passed away weeks before Kilmer became the youngest person at the time to be admitted to Juilliard’s acting program at age 17.

Kilmer continued to film after Wesley’s passing, chronicling numerous pivotal moments in the star’s life, including his time at Juilliard, as well as fathering two children, Mercedes and Jack. The outlet noted that the films also feature behind-the-scenes footage Kilmer shot on movie sets, including “Top Gun,” “Batman Forever” and “The Island of Dr. Moreau.”

Val Kilmer is also reprising his role as Iceman in “Top Gun: Maverick,” which also premieres in theaters this fall.

It wouldn’t be until 2018 when Kilmer was convinced by editors Leo Scott and Ting Poo to use the home movies as the basis of a biographical documentary.

“Val,” from Amazon Studios and A24, will make its world debut on the Croisette. While Kilmer won’t attend due to health concerns, his children are expected to be there, the outlet shared. His son Jack Kilmer, 26, serves as the film’s narrator, speaking as if he were his father.

Kilmer does some speaking, too. His voice has been reduced to a rasp after throat cancer and a tracheotomy.

“Val is a very complex and brilliant man with so many layers,” Scott told the outlet. “And we wanted to like try to get that feeling of him into the film, from his spirituality to a great sense of humor. We never considered doing it any other way with interviews with third parties. We were very clear on that very early on.”

Amazon and A24 are planning a fall release for “Val” in both theaters and on Prime.

Lewinsky had an unusual level of involvement in “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” producers said on Friday ahead of the Sept. 7 premiere on Walt Disney Co’s FX network. She provided feedback on scripts and approved dialogue recited by Feldstein, the “Booksmart” star who plays the former intern.

Spielberg’s Film Company to Partner with Netflix

No media source currently available

Award-winning American film director Steven Spielberg has just signed a new deal with Netflix. The movie streaming service is joining forces with Spielberg’s production company, Amblin Partners, to make several films each year. The partnership is a big step for Netflix as it faces competition from other streaming services.

The deal announced Monday does not specifically include any movies that Spielberg will direct himself. For example, in December, he will release the musical film “West Side Story” with Disney’s company 20th Century Studios. Amblin also has a separate deal with Universal Pictures for film releases.

In a statement, Spielberg said that storytelling will always be “at the center of everything we do.” And when he and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos began talks, he knew this would be great way to tell new stories and reach new audiences. The statement goes on to say that the partnership will be very satisfying for Spielberg personally, and he cannot wait to get started with the Netflix team.

Amblin Partners takes its name from a 1968 film short by Spielberg. The company has helped produce many films outside of those made my Spielberg, including “1917” and “Green Book.” Netflix and Amblin have worked together in the past on television series. They also worked together on “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” a film directed by Aaron Sorkin. It was co-produced by Amblin and sold by paramount Pictures to Netflix during the pandemic.

Spielberg has in the past been known as someone who opposes movie streaming. A headline from the news website Deadline.com on Monday asked if hell had frozen over. The expression suggests that the impossible has happened: Spielberg finally accepts the streaming of movies. But in 2019, he said that he was not against it, adding that people have mistakenly believed that about him.

In 2019, several news stories reported that Spielberg compared streamed film releases to made-for-television movies. He said such films should compete for television awards, or Emmys, not film awards, or Oscars. That year, Spielberg said he is a “firm believer” that movie theaters should be around in the future. He also said that, whether on television or in a theater, what matters is “a great story and everyone should have access to great stories.”

Also that year, in an email to the New York Times, Spielberg wrote that people should have the chance to share a film experience at theaters. He said movie theaters enable crowds to laugh, cry and be afraid together, “so that…they might feel a little less like strangers.” His email also said he wants movie theaters to survive and to remain important to American culture.

Since then, the lines between streaming and theaters have become less clear. For example, Netflix has presented some of its most popular film releases in theaters for a week or more. And traditional film companies like Disney and Warner Brothers now send their movies to theaters and to streaming services.

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos said, “Steven is a creative visionary and leader and, like so many others around the world, my growing up was shaped by his memorable characters and stories.” He added that Netflix is honored and pleased to be part of this period in Spielberg’s filmmaking history.

Angel Manuel Soto to helm ‘Transformers’ standalone movie

A new ‘Transformers’ movie is in the works! Filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto, widely known for the 2020 teen drama ‘Charm City Kings’, is set to helm the new, standalone ‘Transformers’ film based on the Hasbro toy brand. As per Variety, paramount Pictures has made a blind script commitment to develop the new feature. The studio has also hired Marco Ramirez, the showrunner of Netflix’s Marvel show ‘The Defenders’, to write the script for the movie.

The upcoming project is still in its early stages, with Ramirez taking a fresh approach that will not connect to the ‘Transformers’ movies directed by Michael Bay or the ‘Bumblebee’ spin-off helmed by Travis Knight. It was reported last year that ‘Creed 2’ director Steven Caple Jr was set to helm the seventh ‘Transformers’ film after the studio decided to go for a soft revamp of the popular franchise, which has collectively made over USD 4 billion at the box office.

Ramirez is familiar with genre fare, starting as a writer on FX’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’ and Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ before co-creating and co-showrunning ‘The Defenders’, which brought together Netflix’s four Marvel heroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. He also developed CBS All Access’ ‘The Twilight Zone’ reboot with Simon Kinberg and Jordan Peele. Meanwhile, Soto’s plate is already getting crowded. Last month, he signed up to direct ‘Blue Beetle’ for Warner Bros.’ DC Films unit.

‘Charm City Kings’, an adaptation of the 2013 documentary ’12 O’Clock Boys’, won a special jury prize at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival for its ensemble. Sony Pictures Classics was originally distributing the film in theatres, but the pandemic led to its acquisition by HBO Max. (ANI)

BJP demands apology from Javed Akhtar for statement comparing Taliban and RSS

Lyricist and film writer Javed Akhtar and films associated with him and his family may face trouble in coming days. BJP leader Ram Kadam has said the party will not allow Akhtar’s movies to be screened in the country till he apologises for his recent statements comparing the RSS and VHP to the Taliban.

In a recent interview to a news portal, Javed Akhtar said that the Taliban are barbaric, their actions are reprehensible, but those supporting the RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal are all the same. These comments have not gone down well with the BJP, who said that if the RSS were like the Taliban, he wouldn’t be allowed to make such statements.

“RSS-affiliated politicians are at the helm of affairs in the government. These leaders are running the country following Raj Dharm, if they were like Taliban would Mr Akhtar be allowed to make such a statement. This one analogy proves that his statements are farce. But by making such comments he has hurt the sentiments of RSS workers who work poor people in the country. If he doesn’t apologise to them we will not allow his movies to run in this country,” said BJP MLA and spokesperson Ram Kadam.

The BJP’s youth wing took out a protest march to Javed Akhtar’s Juhu residence on Saturday, demanding an apology for his statement. “We think that Akhtar is not mentally stable. This country has given him everything. RSS helps people at the grassroots and he has compared them to Taliban. This is unacceptable. If he doesn’t apologise our agitation against him will only get more intense,” said one BJP youth wing protestor.

Akhtar also reportedly said that India is a secular nation, the population is also largely secular, but there are those who support organisations like the RSS and VHP and have the same ideology as the Nazis.

Drive-In Movies Back on Sat Nights at Oregon Coast’s Lincoln City Cultural Center

Drive-In Movies Back on Sat Nights at Oregon Coast’s Lincoln City Cultural Center

Published 07/18/21 at 7:05 PM PDT
By Oregon Coast Beach Connection staff

(Lincoln City, Oregon) – An old friend of sorts has returned to the central Oregon coast. The Bijou Theater’s Drive Summer Movie series is back in Lincoln City, happening again every Saturday at the Lincoln City Cultural Center (LCCC).

The feature skyrocketed last year after it was implemented, with all spots getting sold out rather quickly by late summer.

The drive-in was an offshoot of both the Bijou and the LCCC as they made serious efforts to maintain revenue by coming up with something creative during COVID’s long shut down. Both facilities had been been promoting online shows, with the Bijou providing streaming movies to people at home while it was closed. This retro-themed, natural extension proved to be just the ticket, especially as the Oregon coast was flooded with visitors last summer, and seeing movies in your vehicle was the perfect way to remain safe from the pandemic.

With an FM transmitter for stereo sound and an enormous 22 x 12 foot silver screen, it’s again going to be a pleasant couple of hours with an age-old favorite pastime, as well as favorite movies. And you’re on the beach, to boot. The parking lot opens at 8 pm on Saturday evenings. They happen rain or shine.

Cost is $25 per car load. Shows start at dusk Saturday nights. For tickets visit CinemaLovers.com. Again this year: free large popcorn included with ticket purchase. Remember to pick it up at the Bijou prior to the movie.

The Oregon Coast Drive-In movie lineup:

7/31: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982). The Steven Spielberg film launched the career of Drew Barrymore and also featured heavy-hitters such as Dee Wallace and Peter Coyote. Released by Universal Pictures, the film was a Blockbuster and wound up the highest-grossing film of all time, until Jurassic Park took it out 11 years later.

Often dubbed “E.T.,” it’s the story of a cute little alien stranded on Earth who befriends the boy Elliot (Dylan Thomas). Elliott and his siblings help it return home while attempting to keep it hidden from their mother and the government.

The concept came from Spielberg’s imaginary friend he created as a child after his parents had divorced, and then culled from the remnants of another movie that had stalled in production called Night Skies. According to Fandom, unlike most motion pictures, it was shot in roughly chronological order, to facilitate convincing emotional performances from the young cast.

8/7: Alien (1979). The groundbreaking sci-fi horror film was the first in a highly successful franchise that has lasted through this decade (although with mixed results). Alien was directed by Baker Baker and starred Tom Skerrit, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto. This nail-biter focuses on a highly aggressive extraterrestrial creature that gets aboard a cargo spacecraft, where it begins stalking and killing its crew. One tense moment after another leaves you jumping in your seat fairly often.

Originally, the story came from screenwriters Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, with O’Bannon turning it into the screenplay. The movie was primarily filmed at Shepperton Studios near London, England. Ridley Scott is reportedly working on another film in the franchise at this moment.

8/14 Gremlins (1984). The wacky story of a man looking for a Christmas present for his son, snagging a mystical but adorable, fuzzy little creature called a mogwai in a Chinese junk shop. Problems arise – indeed explode – when the son gets the creature wet in spite of instructions otherwise. Gizmo is no longer cuddly and turns into a monster, spawning other similar critters that create havoc in the neighborhood. All of it over the holidays, no less.

The film also stars Corey Feldman.

8/21: Casablanca (1942). You can’t get much more iconic than the Bogart / Bacall combo and this film that turned a song into a decades-long classic and the final kiss goodbye scene into a major staple in film literature. Countless films and TV scenes have referenced it, and almost 100 years later it’s widely regarded as one of the best films of all time.

8/28 Bridesmaids (2011). The kooky American romantic comedy film was directed by Paul Feig, written by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, and produced by Judd Apatow, Barry Mendel, and Clayton Townsend.

Bridesmaids centers on the astoundingly talented Wiig (Annie in the film), who suffers a series of misfortunes after being asked to serve as maid of honor for her best friend, Lillian, played by Maya Rudolph. The all-star and glittering cast of fellow bridesmaids includes Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, and Wendi McLendon-Covey, alongside biggies such as Chris O’Dowd, Jon Hamm, and Jill Clayburgh (in her last film appearance).

It hit a nerve with the public and critics right off the bat, grossing $26 million in its opening weekend and eventually brought in $288 million worldwide. Bridesmaids remains an important point of discussion in the world of female-centric cinema.

Daniel Craig named honorary Royal Navy commander

Hollywood star Daniel Craig has been appointed as an honorary Commander by the British Royal Navy, the same rank held by his famous character ‘James Bond’.

The 53-year-old actor feels “truly privileged and honoured” to have been given the title.

“I am truly privileged and honoured to be appointed the rank of Honorary Commander in the senior service,” he said.

First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the head of the British Royal Navy, who worked closely with Craig and the crew on latest Bond movie ‘No Time To Die’ said the organisation’s work was very similar to that done by the spy, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
