There’s good news for those of you still mourning the loss of Google Reader. Google is considering bringing back RSS feeds, with a new “Follow” feature that may be coming to Google Chrome.
If this “experiment,” as Google calls it, works, then it may be even easier to keep up with all your favorite websites without having to rely on things like notifications, newsletters, or using a third party RSS feed. All you would need to do is hit the “Follow” button, and you would be good to go.
The Follow system is designed to be an open RSS web standard, and according to Google it’s designed to “build deeper engagement between users and web publishers.”
New content will be accessible in a new “Following” section on the New Tab page. It sounds pretty easy to stay on top of it all.
We’ve heard it loud and clear: Discovery distribution is lacking on the open web, and RSS hasn’t been ‘mainstream consumer’ friendly. Today, we’re announcing an experimental new way, powered by RSS, to follow creators with one click: https://t.co/9GQXWOqOXb pic.twitter.com/wKwBEhqu0SMay 19, 2021
Some Android users in the U.S. who are using Chrome Canary, the “alpha” experimental version of Chrome that’s updated nightly, will see theFollow feature pop up in the coming weeks.
Sadly ,it’s not clear what Google’s rollout plans are, and for the immediate future Follow will stick around as little more than an experimental feature.
Whether Follow will actually “graduate” and roll out as a stable Chrome feature is still undetermined. Google promises it will provide guidance to web publishers as it learns and evaluates the performance of the Follow feature going forward.
I know I want this feature to expand, especially if it means getting a more streamlined RSS experience on my laptop. While I have no complaints about my current RSS client, it would still be nice to have the option of using one built into my browser.
After all, I use RSS feeds for many things, both as an individual and as part of my daily work routine. Any improvements or streamlining that can be offered, without having to pay any extra money, would make my life so much easier.

All conversations and political commentary these days are focused on the 2024 national elections, and what might happen after. The chatter is about Narendra Modi, Yogi Adityanath, Prashant Kishor and Mamata Banerjee’s coalition calculators. But forget 2024, the real year to focus on is 2025. And nobody is talking about it. It is the year the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh will hit a century. And the 2024 election will pale in comparison to the celebrations and events around 100 years of the RSS.
It is not unlike the grand 100 years commemoration of the Chinese Communist Party.
The reason we are not focusing on 2025 is because too much national attention is on the Bharatiya Janata Party, Modi and Amit Shah, and not enough on the RSS. But the RSS is to Modi, what CCP is to Xi Jinping. RSS’ foremost objective is to change desh ki soch. And electoral power is just a useful handyman toward that goal.

What RSS does in the run-up to 2025 and between Vijaya Dashami of 2025 and 2026 can potentially change the way the next two generations of Indians think, and how the ‘Hindu Rashtra’ organisation is perceived among the young.
Discussions about 2025 have begun, though it is still baby steps. The pandemic delayed much of this.
There is now an effort to begin collecting the institutional histories of all the Sangh groups — around 90 by some estimates including religious, educational, national security and tribal organisations — and achievements, goals and personalities associated with each of them.
Over the next five months, different Sangh organisations will conduct a series of meetings all over India, both at the level of geographical units and the institutions, to deliberate on the question of how best to observe and celebrate RSS 2025. By October 2022, all these inputs will be taken up by national units. Each organisation will also set a growth target for 2025. For example, the RSS right now conducts around 52,000 shakhas today. They would probably aim to double that by 2025.

How is the RSS going about creating this new desh ki soch ahead of 2025?
The thinking in the RSS for some time is that even though they have the bahumat numbers, they still don’t have the grip on the narrative. That the opinion makers are dominated by liberal or progressive thinking, and are easily able to set an international narrative against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, abrogation of Article 370, farmers’ agitation, Hathras, etc. That, despite ruling from Delhi since 2014, Hindutva groups haven’t percolated these opinion-creating ‘spaces’.
So the run-up to 2025 will be a journey of ‘numbers se narrative tak’. And that is a deeper, longer-term ideological project.
Toward this goal, there is a move to consolidate content creation through books, school curriculum, films, exhibitions, documentaries and forging an ecosystem of ‘independent’ intellectuals. Mohan Bhagwat’s comments on the OTT universe and Adityanath government’s invitation to the movie industry to come to Uttar Pradesh are all an acknowledgement of the power of capturing cultural content.
A number of these projects, overseen by committees consisting of RSS sympathisers, will bear fruit next year when India celebrates its 75 years of Independence. Two museums are planned near the Red Fort area – one on Subhas Chandra Bose and the other on Kashmir. There is also a 75-episode TV series called Swaraj for Doordarshan. But it won’t just dish out the regular anti-colonial struggle seen through the roles of Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, but also of civilisational greatness and uprisings. Proposed changes in history textbooks are another move.
Also, much was made of the meeting of media editors with Mohan Bhagwat recently, but not too many took note of his meeting with around a dozen book publishers a couple of months ago. The goal is to publish more books on Indian history, unveil stifled histories and historical personalities.
One ongoing effort is to create around 1,000 educated ‘organic’ Dalit influencers (not social media) and work with them in a way that Hathras-like anti-BJP narrative doesn’t gain ground in the future.

The RSS has gone through several phases in its 100-year history. From the Gandhi assassination fallout and the ban to the setting up of Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 to Emergency. The period between 1975 and 1995 was one of rapid growth; then in 1998, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the first pracharak prime minister; then post-2014.
“Gandhi murder threw us 20 years behind, Emergency pushed us forward by 20 years,” former sarsanghchalak Balasaeb Deoras used to say.
In fact, RSS leaders like to say that their philosophy can no longer be dismissed as the fringe or alternative intellectual discourse of India. The Overton window is already shifting the intellectual axis. Much like the ‘Congress system’, the RSS now must also create its own. Cultural and intellectual ground must now align itself with political power.
Politics is as much about capturing intellectual spaces and vimarsh as winning elections. But much of Indian political commentary is compulsively and chronically stuck in party politics, intrigue and election analysis. While we look away and scatter our energy, the RSS is quietly going about its ‘Changing-India’ project.
Of course, the cumulative benefit of all this narrative-setting will also go to BJP. Although the RSS likes to call itself a ‘socio-cultural organisation’, its fallout on the political structure of the country is certain.

Why news media is in crisis How you can fix it
India needs free, fair, non-hyphenated and questioning journalism even more as it faces multiple crises.
But the news media is in a crisis of its own. There have been brutal layoffs and pay-cuts. The best of journalism is shrinking, yielding to crude prime-time spectacle.
ThePrint has the finest young reporters, columnists and editors working for it. Sustaining journalism of this quality needs smart and thinking people like you to pay for it. Whether you live in India or overseas, you can do it here.
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck looked extra cozy on a day out with their family.
On Saturday, Dec. 4, the couple, who rekindled their early 2000s romance this past spring, treated several of their kids to a movie at the Regency Theater in Los Angeles, Calif.
Before the show started, Ben and Jen were seen cuddling close together as they were escorted into the movie theater by a man who appeared to be a manager.
Jennifer could be seen wearing a multi-colored floral sweater and jeans. She finished off the look with a purple face mask that matched her sweater and boots.
Ben opted for a much more monochromatic look. The Justice League actor channeled his inner Batman by wearing a black jean jacket over a plaid shirt and graphic tee. He completed the outfit with black jeans, sunglasses, and sneakers.
Following closely behind the couple were Jen’s twins, Emme and Max, 13, and Ben’s kids, Seraphina, 12, and Samuel, 9.
Film on Babri Masjid demolition screened at JNU; slogans raised against BJP, RSS
A protest march was carried out by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) inside the campus demanding reconstruction of the demolished Babri Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya. The protest march was staged on Monday night to mark the demolition anniversary of the mosque.
The students, holding placards and shouting slogans, took out the march inside the campus. The protest march ended at the Chandrabhaga Hostel where the student leaders made speeches demanding reconstruction of the mosque, news agency IANS reported. Several videos have also surfaced from within the campus wherein scores of students are seen raising controversial slogans against the BJP, RSS and the Modi government.
Earlier on Sunday, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) organised a show at the campus in which a movie based on the Babri Masjid demolition was shown.
The JNU administration had recently warned against holding the protest, but the student union still held the protest. The admin had asked the students not to telecast any such film otherwise strict action would be taken.
Aishe Ghosh, the JNUSU president said that after Babri Masjid, the next target of the BJP is Kashi and they (BJP) have started working on it. “We are remembering Baba Saheb on this day. We are also condemning the killing of civilians in Nagaland. BJP and RSS haven’t done anything in the name of development, but they are dividing us in the name of religion, law and order is crippling,” she said.
Saket Moon, vice president of the JNUSU said that with the reconstruction of the Babri Masjid justice will be delivered.

Universal Studios’ animation studio Illumination could be planning a standalone Donkey Kong movie as its next Nintendo feature, it’s been claimed.
That’s according to sources cited by Giant Freakin Robot, a movie news site with some track record of exclusive reporting.
The site claims that the Donkey Kong project has entered production and actor Seth Rogen – who will voice DK in next year Super Mario film – is claimed to have signed up as the lead ape.
The publication did not provide further details, but speculated that cast members from Super Mario could potentially join the DK movie.
The latest report could corroborate claims made earlier this year that Nintendo is planning a big push for its Donkey Kong franchise, including a new game, animation and theme park world.
Historically reliable Nintendo insider Zippo claimed in May that the Donkey Kong franchise would be the next focus of its push outside of video games.
“Donkey and co. aren’t just getting a new game, they’re getting animation… a big theme park expansion, merchandise, etc,” they wrote. “This new game is not just a one off, DK is being taken seriously at the big N again, and that should be good news for fans everywhere.”
A few months after Zippo’s post – and following years of speculation – Nintendo and Universal officially announced that they’re building a Donkey Kong expansion at the Super Nintendo World theme park in Osaka, Japan.
The Donkey Kong world is set to open in 2024 and feature a roller coaster based on the DKC games, plus interactive elements and themed merchandise and food.
“I am very happy to be able to make the world of Donkey Kong a reality following the world of Mario,” Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said in a statement at the time.
“I am looking forward to creating a thrilling Donkey Kong experience with the amazing team at Universal. It will take some time until it is completed, but it will be a unique area for not only people who are familiar with Donkey Kong games, but for all guests.”
The Super Mario animated movie is set to release on December 21, 2022, with actor Chris Pratt voicing Mario.
In addition, Anya Taylor-Joy (Queen’s Gambit) has been cast as Princess Peach, Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses) as Luigi and Jack Black as Bowser. Comedian Fred Armisen will voice Cranky Kong.
The original Donkey Kong arcade game turned 40-years-old this summer, with little-to-no fanfare from its creators.
Perhaps more notably, it also marked the debut of Mario, who had originally been named Mr Video by his creator Shigeru Miyamoto, before being renamed Jumpman, and then finally Mario.

Nintendo has confirmed that it intends to create more movies based on its IP.
The company has been working with Despicable Me studio Illumination on a CG Super Mario movie, which is due to arrive in North American cinemas on December 21, 2022.
During a QA session following a financial results briefing on Friday, Shigeru Miyamoto responded to a question asking if there were more movies to follow by saying that was indeed the plan.
As summarised on Twitter by Japan-based analyst and investment adviser David Gibson, Miyamoto claimed that the Super Mario movie is pretty much done and Nintendo is very positive about it.
However, he also said Nintendo is determined to meet fans’ expectations and so it will continue to work on polishing the film ahead of its release in late 2022.
Miyamoto then confirmed that Nintendo would like to make movies based on other IPs, because people should be experiencing the company’s franchise’s in a variety of ways instead of just video games.
These movies would be tackled one by one, he said, rather than having a number of them in production simultaneously.
It was claimed earlier this week that Illumination could be planning a standalone Donkey Kong movie as its next Nintendo feature.
