(Pocket-lint) – The Shortcuts app on iOS is one of the most powerful yet neglected tools available on any iPhone or iPad today. However, just because it’s gone unnoticed by the vast majority of users doesn’t mean you should let its powerful capabilities slide by.

RSS readers might seem like an echo from the past, but they can still serve as a powerful tool to read headlines without having to deal with all the other fluff you’d come across when browsing social media to get your information via instead. 

If you’d like to easily see the latest headlines from your favourite news sources with only a tap of an icon or just a quick summon by Siri, follow along. 

Here’s how to create a custom RSS feed reader using Shortcuts. 

1. Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap on the + icon at the top to create a new shortcut.
3. In the search bar, find and select the Choose from Menu action. 

Once you’re at this step, you’ll be given two item lines by default — the amount of items you choose will be the amount of news feeds you’re going to source from, so if you have four favourite websites in mind, make sure to add four items altogether. 

After that, make sure you rename all the items to the names of the news outlets you’ll be using so you can easily identify them when the shortcut is up and running. 

Next, add the URL action underneath each of the items we added in the step before. This URL box is where you’re going to need to paste the RSS feed links for the accompanying websites. If you aren’t sure where to find a specific news outlets RSS information, Feedspot is a simple to use website that easily helps you find the RSS link you’ll need to make this shortcut work. 

Pocket-lint

Now at the end of your shortcut, add the Get Items from RSS Feed action. By default, it’ll be set to pull 10 headlines from each outlet, but if you’d like to adjust that number, here’s your chance. 

To follow that, add Safari’s Filter Articles action and (presumably) you’ll want to set the Sort by setting to Published Date then the Order option to Latest First. This ensures you’re seeing recent news first and not stories from 2010. 

Final steps

Finally, you’re ready to put the finishing touches on now. 

Close out this shortcut by adding the Choose from List action, then finish it all off with a simple Open URLs trigger.

Researchers examined data from an international cohort of 329 aerospace engineers and 72 neurosurgeons who completed 12 tasks online using the Great British Intelligence Test (GBIT) from the Cognitron platform, as well as answering questions around their age, sex and levels of experience in their speciality.

The findings published in the festive edition of BMJ, reveal that only neurosurgeons showed a significant difference, with quicker problem-solving speed but slower memory recall compared with the general population, the report said.

“The difference in problem-solving speed exhibited by neurosurgeons might arise from the fast-paced nature of neurosurgery, which attracts those with a pre-existing flair for rapid processing, or it could be, albeit less likely, a product of training for rapid decision-making in time-critical situations,” the researchers noted.

Be it Khilona, Anamika, Koshish, Manchali, Naya Din Nayee Raat, Mausam, Anubhav, Pati, Patna aur Woh, Angoor, Zindagi, Manoranjan … or Sholay, Trishul, Vidhata, Silsila, Kala Pathar, Seeta aur Geeta, Shatranj Ki Khilari … Sanjeev Kumar always stood out. Even minus his looks and physique hardly conforming to the requirements of a matinee idol [read: Rajesh, Amitabh, Vinod Khanna, Jitendra, Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor], the paunchy actor crossed the rubicon, with passion and purpose and triumphed like very few others have.

From the changing of his name, Haribhai Jhariwala, the Gujarati stage actor to Sanjeev Kumar, the Bollywood aspirant; his unsung, unnoticed and unheralded entry into the industry with B-grade stunt films; his first cameo against the Emperor of Bollywood Dilip Kumar in Sangharsh [chronicled in an unmisssable, fascinating chapter entitled Jamnadas’s Sangharsh] and the terrific impact it made on the industry-wallahs and audiences; his subsequent steady rise in the industry in terms of name, fame and roles; his bonding and films with Gulzar; his awe of Bengali diva Suchitra Sen; his passionate affair with a co-star and popular leading lady of the time; it’s tragic end and subsequent heart-break; iconic multi-starrers he participated with memorable elan and grace; his eternal availability for soul-strip roles (which others wouldn’t dream of accepting) that challenged the artist in him; his health issues and slow, sad fade-out … and of course alongside his role as a true, loving, caring son, brother, uncle and dutiful provider for his family, and a yaron ka yaar to his close friends like Shatrughan Sinha.

The few exceptions who have been open to discussion and debate would comprise Shyam Benegal for sure, Ramesh Sippy (ever since he couldn’t quite top Sholay), Rajkumar Hirani (the lord preserve him), Farhan Akhtar (I think), Hansal Mehta (ever since he turned to reality-culled cinema with Shahid), Ashutosh Gowariker (I hope) and…naah no one else.

That asserted, what do most film reviewers dream about in the multiplex of the mind? I’d like to believe that we dream about reacting to films with emotion, honesty and with a certain individualism. We chase, often in vain, the ideal of illumination, persuasion, crystal clear thinking and writing.

The film industry is not to be indulged, any more than the filmmaker is to be told how he or she should make movies. The one would be dishonest, the other presumptuous. The public, the reader of film reviews is to be guided, certainly, but not in a simplistic manner. Criticism certainly isn’t a branch of the Consumers’ Guidance Society.

Those star ratings – on a scale of one to five stars above a review–are another story altogether. How to ‘starrify’ a movie is a pain in the neck, and worse. Like it or detest it, that dumbed-down chore, that ‘quickie’ indicator is mandatory. Those who venture forth to read the entire review below those galactic icons, in fact, deserve a certificate of bravery for their fortitude and patience.

The point is that it’s not for the critic of any persuasion to do the reader’s thinking. It is far more important for the critic to do his or her own thinking to share with the viewer. This may seem like a slight difference but all aspects considered, it is tremendous.

To offer a bit of plot summary, speedy judgments — this actor was bad, that one was good — and an arbitrary recommendation for or against the film — this kind of criticism thinks for the reader, and is perfectly worthless.

Consolably, there is another kind of criticism in which the writer develops thought processes, as it were, behind glass so transparently that the reader can see how the critical mind engages the film, and arrives at conclusions.

This tantamounts to thinking aloud in public, which the reader can agree or disagree with, in part or in toto. It invites a dialogue. It is not a fatherly pointing index finger, neither an insider’s dope, nor a brother and sister act on the lines of, “We’re all alike and if I loved or hated it, so will you.”

Jake McLaughlin in First Trailer for ‘Home’ Directed by Franka Potente

“Let’s have a celebration! You’re here, after all.” Gravitas Ventures has unveiled a trailer for the indie film Home, marking the feature directorial debut of German actress Franka Potente. This first premiered at the 2020 Rome Film Festival last year, and is arriving on VOD starting in December this year. The film tells the story of Marvin Hacks coming home after more than 17 years in prison, who will soon find out that, even after two decades, his small American hometown has not forgotten the atrocity he committed. Despite the confrontation and hostility from the locals, Marvin will do what it takes to win back his place in society. It stars Jake McLaughlin as Marvin, along with Kathy Bates, Aisling Franciosi, Derek Richardson, James Jordan, Lil Rel Howery, and Stephen Root. It looks better than most films with this story, but it does just seem like yet another “ex-con returns home” film that we’ve already seen so many times before.

Marvin Hacks (Jake McLaughlin) is skateboarding home after spending seventeen years in prison in the same Adidas tracksuit he was wearing when he was arrested as a teenager. He quickly finds out that, even after two decades, his small hometown has not forgotten the atrocity he committed, but Marvin wants to come to make peace with his mother (Kathy Bates) and is prepared to accept the repercussions of his past, whatever the cost. Home is both written and directed by German actress / filmmaker Franka Potente, making her feature directorial debut after directing one other short film previously. It’s produced by Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo. This initially premiered at the 2020 Rome Film Festival last year. Gravitas Ventures will debut Potente’s Home in select US theaters + on VOD starting December 3rd, 2021 this fall.

He said that the country belongs to the poor, farmers, small shopkeepers, only these people can give employment to this country. Adani-Ambani have a place but they cannot create jobs on a large scale. Small business people, farmers can generate large scale employment.

Before Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also addressed the gathering and attacked the policies of the central government and the BJP.

She termed the central government as the government of lies, greed and loot.

I know how roads are being built in Goa just for the sake of transportation of coals to benefit one industrialist, she said and termed Modi as Paryatak PM.

“Modiji travelled throughout the world but did not go to farmers who were protesting on the roads,” she said adding that “the state in which I work spends crores of rupees on advertisement but does not spend on fertilisers for farmers.”

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also spoke on the occasion and said that all state governments are facing the challenge of financial crisis as the central government stays mum.

He said that Narendra Modi is one such PM who has not replied to a letter from the CM.

“This government is being run with hubris,” he added.
