Full Trailer for ‘Mr. Saturday Night’ Doc About ‘Saturday Night Fever’

“Robert was pitching this ‘little disco movie.'” HBO has debuted a full trailer for the film Mr. Saturday Night, another documentary that’s part of the outstanding Music Box series of doc films this fall. It already premiered at the DOC NYC Film Festival. This is the next one to launch on HBO Max following Listening to Kenny G and DMX: Don’t Try to Understand. Mr. Saturday Night is directed by the filmmaker also behind this year’s Gordon Parks doc A Choice Of Weapons. The intro from DOC NYC: “The style. The fashion. The moves. Saturday Night Fever left an indelible stamp on our cultural memory of the 1970s—and there was one man behind it all. Robert Stigwood, a producer impresario, best known for managing the Bee Gees [and Cream], took the swagger of a Bay Ridge, Brooklyn disco, and brought it to the big screen. Although the film’s popularity sent his career on a meteoric rise, Stigwood’s star-making prowess couldn’t guarantee a lifetime of success.” It’s always so fascinating to hear stories about what really happened behind the scenes.

Here’s the trailer (+ poster) for John Maggio’s doc Mr. Saturday Night, from HBO’s YouTube:

HBO documentary Mr. Saturday Night chronicles the meteoric career of Australian entrepreneur Robert Stigwood, who gambled on a magazine article about the Brooklyn night club scene and turned it into the 1977 cultural touchstone film Saturday Night Fever, making a global superstar out of John Travolta and reinvigorating disco with a platinum-selling soundtrack anchored by four number-one hits from the Bee Gees. Mr. Saturday Night tracks Stigwood’s journey from managing artists such as Eric Clapton and the Bee Gees, to producing the hit theater productions of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Tommy” and “Evita,” to forever changing the way film studios approached movie soundtrack synergy, leaving an indelible mark on American cinema and the record industry for decades to come. Mr. Saturday Night is directed by doc producer / filmmaker John Maggio, of the doc films Panic: The Untold Story of the 2008 Financial Crisis, The Perfect Weapon, A Choice of Weapons, as well as the “American Experience” series and other TV work. Part of Bill Simmons’ Music Box doc series for HBO (watch the official trailer). HBO will debut Maggio’s Mr. Saturday Night streaming on HBO Max starting December 9th, 2021 this year. Who’s ready to groove?

BJP-RSS provoking a Muslim backlash but Muslims refusing to fall in the trap

Yogi’s blatant Thakurwad during the last five years is also generating a new social mobilisation. Dalits and several backward castes are drifting away from the BJP. Even a section of Brahmins is not too happy with the BJP in UP. There are also reports of Muslims going for strategic voting with even Asaduddin Owasi’s rhetoric apparently failing to sway them.

UP seems to be drifting away from Kamandal and moving again towards Mandal in this round of elections.

It must be alarming news for the BJP. Old timers in the state have for long believed that if Lucknow slips out of a political party’s grip, Delhi too becomes difficult to retain. With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections not too far now, signs of an insecure Lucknow must be causing serious concern to BJP bosses in Delhi. So, there is a desperate attempt to secure power somehow in Lucknow.

Unfortunately for the BJP, it has had to fall back upon religion and hate to win elections, although temple politics seems to have considerably lost its appeal. The call for temples in Ayodhya-Kashi-Mathura, as anticipated, has been given but it is just not selling like the Ram temple did in the 1990s.

The problem with the BJP in UP now is that there is no visible Muslim ‘enemy’ like Babri Masjid Action Committee to provoke and incite a Hindu backlash now. There is no Muslim resistance to Kashi or Mathura temples like there was to the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

So, how to build up hate for Muslims and paint them as the enemy in Hindu minds? Bring Muslims somehow to the streets, let fanatic Muslims retaliate in kind and hold out threats so that a Hindu backlash builds up.

The opposition in Gurugram to the devout offering Friday namaz in designated public places, after mosques were shut down and permission for adding floors to existing mosques was withheld, the call for genocide and the auction of Muslim women online are all designed to provoke a Muslim backlash. Once a fanatic Muslim leadership emerges as the community spokesperson, it would be easier to conjure and sell an Aurangzeb versus Shivaji binary to the Hindus.

‘Knight,’ filming in downtown Las Cruces, is about a ‘seasoned cop who foils a robbery’ – Las Cruces Sun

LAS CRUCES – Production of the movie “Knight” continued this week with scenes of an apparent bank heist being filmed downtown, though officials remained tight-lipped on who stars in the movie.

The New Mexico Film Office on Tuesday released some information on the production, stating filming of “Knight” will take place from late October through early November in Las Cruces.

“Knight is the story of a seasoned cop who foils a robbery and must save his daughter in the process,” the film office stated in a news release.

Ed Drake directs “Knight” and was on set Tuesday.

“The team of ‘Knight’ is very excited about filming in New Mexico,” Drake said in a news release. “We heard great things about crew and talent in New Mexico and of course the tax credit helped make it an easy decision to move the production here from Georgia.”

The production required some downtown street closures Tuesday and Wednesday and the City of Las Cruces issued a notice Monday that blank gunfire and small explosions will be part of scenes filmed at the Bank of the West BNP Paribas building at 201 N. Church St.

A Sun-News photographer near the set captured scenes being filmed of actors wearing ski masks and carrying prop guns. Other actors, unmasked, crouch behind vehicles marked “Metro Police,” in an apparent standoff with the bank robbers.

Rumors have been swirling online that Bruce Willis — the action movie star who helmed the “Die Hard” franchise — is starring in this film. A Sun-News photographer did not see Willis on set Tuesday, though one actor strongly resembled Willis.

When a reporter asked Drake whether Bruce Willis was on set yet, Drake responded, “No. No he’s not.”

Drake and Willis have collaborated on five projects in recent years. Willis starred in the 2020 film “Breach,” which Drake wrote. Drake is cited as the director of two movies released in 2021 in which Willis stars: “Cosmic Sin” and “Apex.” Willis costars with John Travolta in “Paradise City,” which is in post-production, according to the Internet Movie Database. Drake wrote that movie. Also in post-production, according to IMDB, is “Gasoline Alley,” which Drake is directing and in which Willis stars.

IMDB does not yet include “Knight” in its database.

The New Mexico Film Office stated the production will employ approximately 50 New Mexico crew members, 10 New Mexico principal actors, and 200 New Mexico background talent.

“Las Cruces is quickly becoming a location of choice because of the stunning locations, and supportive film office, but most importantly, because of the ability for productions to take full advantage of the competitive film incentive that New Mexico offers by shooting in an uplift zone,” Amber Dodson, director, New Mexico Film Office, said in the news release.

According to the New Mexico Film Office website, an uplift zone gives productions a 5% refundable credit for movies made at least 60 miles outside of Bernalillo and Santa Fe counties.

Film Las Cruces director Jonathan Sepp said three productions, including “Knight,” are scheduled to film in the area this fall and winter. He said the local film office would be limiting publicity about their activities aside from public safety announcements.

Intense Official US Trailer for Revolutionary Mexican Film ‘New Order’

New Order Trailer

“Powerful and necessary.” Neon has debuted a new full US trailer for the Mexican film New Order, which originally premiered at the Venice + Toronto Film Festivals last year. Nuevo Orden (in Spanish) is the latest film from acclaimed filmmaker Michel Franco (After Lucia, Chronic, April’s Daughter) and is described as a “gripping, hard-hitting, dystopian drama.” This definitely looks intense. A lavish high-society wedding unexpectedly turns into a class struggle that leads to a violent coup. The film has already received a mix of scathing and raving reviews, criticizing the film’s depiction of the lower class, though it’s hard to tell without seeing it first. Starring Naian González Norvind, Diego Boneta, Mónica del Carmen, Fernando Cuautle, Darío Yazbek, Roberto Medina, Patricia Bernal, Lisa Owen, and Enrique Singer. It’s now set for release in theaters in the US this May. This more I see of this, the more curious I am to watch it.

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Michel Franco’s New Order, direct from Neon’s YouTube:

New Order Film

You can still watch the first teaser trailer for Franco’s New Order here, or the full international trailer.

In this riveting, suspenseful dystopian drama from Mexico, a lavish upper-class wedding goes awry in an unexpected uprising of class warfare that gives way to a violent coup d’état. As seen through the eyes of the sympathetic young bride and the servants who work for – and against – her wealthy family, New Order breathlessly traces the collapse of one political system as a more harrowing replacement springs up in its wake. New Order, originally known as Nuevo Orden in Spanish (or Lo que algunos soñaron), is both written and directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco, director of the films Daniel and Ana, After Lucia, A los ojos, Chronic, and April’s Daughter previously. This first premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at the Zurich + Toronto Film Festivals. It already opened in cinemas in Mexico last year. Neon will debut Franco’s New Order in select US theaters on May 21st, 2021.

Alec Baldwin ‘fully cooperating’ with police after fatal Santa Fe movie set shooting

The dispatcher asked the caller, “Was it loaded with a real bullet?”

The caller responded saying, “We don’t, I don’t, I cannot tell you that. We have two injuries from a movie gunshot.”

The caller also appeared to place blame on another one of the crew members, saying, “And this (expletive) AD that yelled at me at lunch, asking about revisions, this mother (expletive.) (inaudible) He’s supposed to check the guns. He’s responsible for what happens on the set.”

According to our partners at the Santa Fe New Mexican, a search warrant said the assistant director grabbed one of three prop guns – unaware it had live ammunition – from a rolling cart, handed it to Baldwin and yelled, “cold gun!”

The prop gun was fired by Baldwin, striking Hutchins in the chest. Souza, who was behind Hutchins, reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Hutchins was airlifted to UNM Hospital where she later died. Souza was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital to receive emergency care. He was later released from the hospital.

The warrant also said a crew member responsible for the guns on set removed a spent casing out of the gun after it was fired.

Deputies took the gun as part of the investigation, along with other pieces of evidence from the set.

On Friday a spokesperson for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office said they didn’t anticipate to release any updates on their investigation until next week. He also couldn’t confirm or deny reports that the prop gun fired a live round.

NBC News is reporting several crew members recently walked off set due to safety concerns. Production has been halted for the time being.

Alec Baldwin released a statement Friday morning:

“There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours. I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”

The First Judicial District Attorney, Mary Carmack-Altwies, also issued a statement Friday:

“This case is still in its preliminary states of investigation. We are assisting the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office and have offered our full support to them. At this time, we do not know if charges will be filed. We will look into all facts and evidence of the case with great discretion and have further information at a later time. Our thoughts are with all affected by this tragedy.”

Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber expressed “sincere condolences” to the family, friends and colleagues of Hutchins. The mayor also expressed support for the project’s personnel, stating the following:

“The television, film and digital entertainment community is an important part of the greater community. The Film and Digital Media Commission contributes to all aspects of our cultural life. We all share in hoping everyone can come through this awful experience, and will do everything we can to support those touched directly and indirectly by the tragedy.”

Titane Review

THIS is the film every critic was waiting to finally see at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Something so bold and audacious and original and incredible and energetic that we all erupt into applause as soon as it’s over. Titane is the second feature film made by French filmmaker Julia Ducournau, who made her debut with the horror hit Raw back in 2016. She returns to the Cannes Film Festival again to premiere her latest film, Titane, and it fucking rules. Absolute metal. File this one under “you have never seen anything like this” – wickedly original, jaw-drop cinema. Not at all what you’re expecting, not what anyone is expecting. Which is the best kind of film to enjoy at a festival. Titane is an extremely brutal, audacious, vivacious take on bad fathers. Which is the simplest description that does not come close to properly capturing everything in this.

Titane is the epitome of indescribable cinema. I can explain what happens in each scene, or vaguely attempt to summarize the plot, but that really doesn’t do it justice. There’s no way to sum up what’s going on in the film without otherwise butchering the nuances and subtleties of how crazy gnarly it is. But I’ll try anyway… The title Titane refers to the material “titanium”. A young girl ends up in a car crash and a titanium plate is installed on her skull. That’s the opening. Then we jump ahead years and Alexia is older, played by Agathe Rousselle, and she loves cars because she hates everyone else. She loves them so much she ends up having sex with one of them. She’s also a serial killer – I guess? And uses her knitting needle hair pin to kill anyone that gets too close to her, whether it be a fan or a lover. She finally ends up on the run because, of course, the police are on to her and she tries to hide by pretending to be someone else. That’s not even half the film.

Where the film goes next is also indescribable, involving an aging fireman captain (in French a commandant de pompier) played heroically by Vincent Lindon, along with Alexia as she struggles to stay hidden. The whole film is a prodigiously wild and crazy and punk creation, but it works. It works so well you want to get up and dance with the characters in the numerous dance scenes. The song choices are perfect, including one glorious scene using “Light House” by Future Islands. The whole film is drenched in neon lights and vivid colors, which add to the strange and alluring atmosphere. Julia Ducournau slaps us with one of the boldest “fuck-off” stories ever made, featuring firemen, car sex, murders, titanium plates, lonely fathers, and more. Stop reading what I’m saying here and go experience this film without any idea of what you’re about to see.

I could tell you that the film is ultimately about bad dads, and a woman who grows up to be one bad bitch because of her awful father, and ultimately finds redemption in the arms of someone else. But explaining it this way is doing the film a disservice, as it’s an extraordinary work of cinematic art because it’s something you get totally lost in and experience together with a crowd sitting in the same cinema with you. This is the kind of bold work we need more of in cinema – films that don’t hold back, offer entirely new perspectives, challenge what we think, take us into places we’ve never been before, don’t follow any rules, and play against expectations. Ducournau knows exactly what she’s doing and knows what she’s crafting, with both Raw and Titane; there’s hardly a moment that might make you question her talent. So all I can say is I’m glad she is making films her way, telling stories her way, and giving us something new to enjoy in the world of cinema.
