Another 60-Second Trailer for ‘The Batman’ With Even More Riddles

“I’m here to unmask the truth about this city.” In addition to two new posters debuted by Twitter today, a new 60-second TV trailer for The Batman has made its way online. This follows up the fun “The Bat and The Cat” trailer from a few weeks ago. But the focus in this one is on the classic villain The Riddler, played by Paul Dano in this film. Who’s ready for another slice of Batman? Warner Bros has dropped a new trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman dubbed “The Bat and The Cat” about the Batman vs Catwoman feud in the movie. We’ve already featured numerous trailers, including the full trailer and an extra Japanese trailer with more footage. While in his second year of fighting crime, Batman uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while facing a deranged serial killer. The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the “Caped Crusader”, with Andy Serkis as Alfred, Zoe Kravitz as Selina, Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, plus Colin Farrell as Cobblepot, John Turturro as Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard. These trailers could not be more perfect – just the right amount of awesome footage to keep the hype going. Vengeance has arrived.

The stunning admiration and acclaim that the film ‘The Kashmir Files’, which chronicles the genocide suffered by Kashmiri Pandits at the hands of Islamic terrorists, has received since its release has pricked the wrong nerve of radical Islamists in Pakistan. Haqeeqat TV, a Pakistani YouTube channel, has since harshly criticised the film, calling it sham and an anti-Muslim propaganda film that is bereft of facts.

Haqeeqat TV has on March 14, 2022, uploaded a video on its YouTube channel titled ‘How Indian Movie The Kashmir Files is Changing the True History of India’, where it has given an extremely hateful and biased review of the movie-Kashmir Files, that has met with huge success after its release on March 11. 

The Pakistani channel audaciously peddled blatant lies by not only denying the Kashmiri Hindu Genocide that happened in the land of Kashmir in 1989-1990 but by claiming that the people of the RSS had killed their own people in Kashmir then, to peddle a hate agenda and discredit the Muslims in the state.

Basically, the Paksiatni anchor claimed the entire Kashmiri Hindu Genocide a conspiracy peddled by the RSS to denounce the Muslims in Kashmir. He exclaimed that the Kashmiri Pandits were people of the RSS. They had then created a terror environment in Kashmir. They killed their own people and called it a genocide committed by Islamists against Kashmiri Pandits.

The anchor added that the Kashmiri Pandit originally did not belong to Kashmir. They came from outside and forcefully settled in the valley despite Article 370 and 35 A being in place.

Pakistan anchor toes Congress’ line

The Pakistani anchor, as is customary, took a stance similar to that of Congress’ controversial stance on the film. On Sunday, INC Kerala Twitter handle had also sparked controversy by alleging, “Pandits left the valley en masse under the direction of Governor Jagmohan who was an RSS man. The migration started under the BJP-supported VP Singh government.”

When asked a reaction about Congress’ controversial stance on the film, actor Anupam Kher, who has played a pivotal role in the film, said that this is the time when all the lies are being exposed. It is shameful that the Kerala Congress is repeating the same lies even after so much evidence has emerged, even after The Kashmir Files has been made. I think we should not pay any heed to them. They have become dynastic and have fallen,” He added, “They (The Congress) is trying to strike their relevance by making us talk about them. I don’t want to give them that much importance.”

Moving on, the Pakistan anchor urged Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Army Chief General Baweja to save Kashmiris and Indian Muslims because, according to Haqeeqat TV, the film Kashmir Files will soon influence people’s minds and set a bad precedent, resulting in mass destruction of Muslims in the valley.

The Pakistani channel said that Vivek Agnihotri has made this particular movie to fulfil India’s anti-Muslim agenda, which is obvious with the way he was greeted by PM Narendra Modi.

Notably, Director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, his actor-wife Pallavi Joshi, and producer Abhishek Agarwal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, a day after the movie was released in theatres on Friday. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared pictures from the meeting on Saturday evening. Abhishek also shared pictures on Twitter and thanked the PM for his ‘appreciation’. 

Vivek retweeted him and wrote, “I am so glad for you @AbhishekOfficl you have shown the courage to produce the most challenging truth of Bharat. #TheKashmirFiles screenings in USA proved the changing mood of the world in the leadership of @narendramodi.”

Not being able to digest that the movie, against all odds, collected around Rs 27.15 crores in the very first weekend, anchor kept lamenting how well the film had been so well received and appreciated and how it became such a huge hit, booking so many profits.

The Haqeeqat TV anchor rues how the movie after a restrained platform release on merely 600 screens on Friday went closer to 2000 screens on Sunday and almost 3000 to 4000 screens Monday (March 14, 2022).

It may be noted that despite releasing on a limited screen across India, The Kashmir Files by Vivek Agnihotri has become a Blockbuster hit within just two days of its release. The Kashmir Files, which brings the brutally honest account of the Kashmiri Pandit genocide to the big screen, has received an unprecedented response from the audience.

Makers of The Kashmir Files celebrate the film’s huge success

Makers of the recent superhit movie ‘The Kashmir Files’ held a press conference in Delhi after the film met with huge success after its release on March 11. While Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri and actress Pallavi Joshi elaborated about the importance of the film at this juncture, veteran Actor Anupam Kher flew down from Mumbai amidst a shooting schedule, especially to celebrate the success of the film.

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri asserted in the press conference that ‘The Kashmir Files’ has truly become a people’s film. He talked about the lack of awareness and denial people were living in about the Kashmiri Hindu Genocide, which, he claimed, prompted him to make the film.

In the press conference, Vivek Agnihotri along with KP diaspora member Surinder Kaul talked about the support garnered by the film from the east coast state of Rhode Island in the USA.

Perturbed by the success of Kashmir Files and people’s reaction to the genocide of Kashmiri Hindu community in 1990, Congress party has officially stepped in to defend the Islamists who carried it out. In a long deranged rant, official Congress Kerala handle blamed everyone from Governor Jagmohan to BJP for the genocide.

In a Twitter thread from their official Congress Kerala handle, the Congress party started off their rant by downplaying the whole Kashmiri Hindu genocide itself. Saying 399 Kashmiri Hindus were killed by terrorists, and comparing it to the 15,000 deaths of Muslims in the valley over the last 3 decades as a result of terrorism.

To put things in perspective, lakhs of Kashmiri Hindus were forced to leave their valley, almost overnight, leaving all their belongings behind. There were announcements made from mosques asking Kashmiri Hindu men to leave the valley, leaving their women behind. The chants of ‘convert (to Islam), leave or die’ echoed in the valley. That the Kashmiri Hindus did not leave their homes out of free will but were forced to is completely ignored by Congress.

Then Congress went on to blame Governor Jagmohan, the man who actually saved Kashmiri Hindus from a fate much worse than the exodus. “Jagmohan theory” is a long peddled lie by Congress and its cabal to give a clean chit to the Islamists for their actions in 1990.

Governor Jagmohan, who was appointed as the governor of Jammu Kashmir on 19th January 1990, and reached Srinagar only on 21st January 1990, has been repeatedly blamed by Congress for the Kashmiri Hindu exodus.

The thread further tried to imply that the Kashmiri Hindus were not targeted and they were victims of terrorism just like everyone else. Apparently slogans like ‘Raliv Galiv ya Chaliv‘ (Convert, die or leave) that Kashmiri Hindus heard all around them were a figment of their imagination. Another slogan the mobs chanted ‘aasie gacchie panunuy Pakistan, batav rostuy batenien saan’ (We want our Pakistan. Without Kashmiri Pandit men but with Kashmiri Pandit women) was not targeting them either apparently as per Congress.

Of course, much of the Congress ire was directed at the ruling party BJP. With multiple BJP governments supporting the Kashmir Files movie by making it tax-free, Congress tried to show that BJP is the actual villain of the events shown in the film. From linking Ayodhya movement to the Kashmiri Hindu exodus to BJP’s support to the then VP Singh government to declaring Governor Jagmohan an RSS man, Congress blamed BJP for the entire exodus.

And if that was not enough, somehow Congress managed to make Jammu residents villains by claiming how Kashmiri Muslims were killed in Jammu during partition. This insinuates justification of the Kashmiri Pandit exodus and genocide by hands of Islamic terrorists ‘because Muslims were also killed’ theory.

Apparently, the Kashmiri Hindu exodus and genocide on hands of Islamic terrorists is ‘issue’ which BJP used for ‘propaganda’. The horrors endured by Kashmiri Hindus was reduced to ‘fake outrage’.

Congress cleverly tries to insinuate that the violence in 1990 happened overnight or was the only time Kashmiri Hindus left the valley. The community was targeted continuously since the partition. There was violence in the 70s, 80s when some Kashmiri Hindus left the valley. Those who stayed back till 1990s thought they were in safe hands amongst their neighbours. Except, in the 1990s even many of the neighbours turned on them. This is not a figment of imagination but lived trauma of thousands of Kashmiri Hindus.

The only people Congress didn’t blame during the course of the thread was the militant cadres of Pakistani based terror groups, JKLF, Hizbul and members of local militia who carried out the genocide. Everyone else was culpable except the men actually carrying out the murders and the rapes.

Congress’ top leadership and Kerala unit

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is currently the Chairman of Kerala Congress Digital media cell.

Senior Congress leader is the Chairman of Kerala state unit’s digital media cell. It is very likely that he was in the know of things being posted by the social media account. It is also likely the Kerala Congress social media account posted on behest of Tharoor.

Another thing is that former Congress President and son of current Congress President Rahul Gandhi represents Wayanad constituency in Lok Sabha. Wayanad is one of the important constituencies in Kerala.

By now, there are a few things we have come to expect in a Karthik Subbaraj film – sorry, ‘A Karthik Subbaraj padam’. A fairly popular old song that kind of fits the film’s narrative; a smattering of Rajinikanth movie references; a character named Michael; a cameo by Subbaraj’s father, Gajaraj… what else? Oh, yes, of course: the famous Karthik Subbaraj Twist™. These tropes and motifs can be viewed as signatures of an auteur or as repetitions that get a bit tiresome.

Mahaan , you have mixed feelings about it. In fact, you have mixed feelings about the whole film as well.

It is by no means an ordinary film, because Subbaraj has attempted an epic. We have a sprawling drama, spanning decades. We notice the lives of three key characters crisscrossing each other; their fates, inevitably intertwined. We witness history repeating itself. If all this is not enough evidence of an epic, then there is Santhosh Narayanan’s trumpet-heavy background score that accentuates the drama.

The film opens with this Mohandas Gandhi quote: “Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.” What follows is the story of someone named Gandhi Mahaan (Vikram), who ends up making mistakes with a capital M.

Gandhi’s grandfather and father are followers of, well,
Gandhi. His father is so devoted to his ideology that he changes his son’s birthday from August 16 to August 15 on his birth certificate. Later, Gandhi marries Naachi (Simran), who is also a staunch Gandhian. She teaches her little son to shut his eyes if he sees a Hollywood movie poster because she believes these films contain violence and sex. Gandhi is not merely surrounded by Gandhians, he is stifled by them. Their expectation to emulate a man who is revered as a Mahatma burdens him. For, Gandhi’s inclination is to travel the path of pleasures — even if they are considered sinful.

Because of his father and wife, Gandhi, till he turns 40, lives — rather, forces himself to live — according to the Gandhian ways. But life takes a dramatic turn at 40 when he runs into his boyhood buddy Sathyavan (Simha), who has taken over his father’s alcohol business. Committing one sin after another, Gandhi becomes anti-
Gandhi , and soon, he has a big life choice to make.

Vikram is fantastic as Gandhi Mahaan. He transitions effortlessly from a timid school teacher to a gun-wielding alcohol baron. His eyes convey the delightful menace when he finds out for the first time that he is capable of violence. They are equally effective in showing his helplessness as a man who has to make a tough choice.

The rest of the main cast do a fine job as well (Dhruv’s performance is, however, a little overpitched). Simha, especially, is impressive as Sathyavan. Subbaraj is in no hurry while fleshing out these characters. And, that is fine because you do not expect a gangster drama to travel at a breakneck pace.

One of the problems with
Mahaan is that it does not quite hit you as it should. For instance, there is a point where Gandhi tells Sathyavan, “Oru vaazhkai, varalara vazhanum” [roughly translates to ‘We got one life, make history’]. It is an epic, hair-raising line on paper. But your hair does not rise when it is uttered on screen.

Another issue is the inconsistency in Gandhi’s emotional graph. There is a point where he is crestfallen, burdened by his own deeds. He looks like he has lost the will to live. But there is an abrupt liberation after which he returns to his audacious self.

In its last hour or so, you find the film trying to do too many things. We follow a father-son rivalry, a story of a man paying for his sins, a battle of two ideologies… and, of course, amidst all this, we get a twist as well (because this is a Karthik Subbaraj padam). It is admirable that
Mahaan attempts to juggle all this. But after a point, it gets a bit excessive. And you wonder if the film should have listened to a line from its protagonist. “Everything in moderation. That’s the right way to be.”

Mahaan is currently streaming on Amazon Prime

US Trailer for ‘The Last Matinee’ Uruguayan Horror Homage to Cinema

“Today, you may feel the Universe owes you. Nonetheless, someone else’s sacrifice won’t save you.” Dark Star Pictures + Bloody Disgusting have revealed a new official US trailer for an Uruguayan horror film titled The Last Matinee. Not only is it a tribute to the spooky magic of watching horror movies in dingy, dark cinemas. But it’s also a horror movie set inside an old cinema. This premiered at the Sitges Film Festival and at many other genre festivals last year, now opening in the US this August. The audience attending the last showing of a horror film in a small downtown cinema are terrorized by a murderer who begins to pick them off, one by one. The only person to notice that something strange is going on is the projectionist’s daughter. The Last Matinee stars Luciana Grasso, Ricardo Islas, Julieta Spinelli, Franco Duran, and Pedro Duarte. This looks damn good, Uruguay seems to be offering some of the finest indie horror gems recently.

On a stormy night in Montevideo in 1993, an engineering student named Ana (Luciana Grasso) takes over the duties of her father, a projectionist at a declining movie theatre, due to his ill health. Unbeknownst to her, the audience watching the film that she is running are being murdered by a black-gloved killer. The Last Matinee, also known as Al Morir la Matinée in Spanish, is directed by Uruguayan filmmaker Maxi Contenti (aka Maximiliano Contenti), director of the films Muñeco viviente V and Neptunia (co-director) previously. The screenplay is by Manuel Facal and Maxi Contenti. This already opened in Uruguay last fall and also premiered at the Sitges Film Festival last year. Dark Star Pictures + B-D will release Contenti’s The Last Matinee in select US theaters on August 6th, then on VOD starting August 24th, 2021 this summer.
