In the upcoming apocalypse comedy “Don’t Look Up,” megawatt movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence play astronomers from Michigan State University who discover a giant comet hurtling toward Earth that will end humanity in approximately six and a half months. 

They travel to the White House to inform the administration of their findings, but they’re mocked for their, what is in the eyes of some, humble educational backgrounds.

“I’m sorry, did you say Michigan State?” asks Jonah Hill’s character, who plays the pampered, clownish son of the president (played by Meryl Streep) and the White House chief of staff. “They have an excellent astronomy department,” Hill’s character is informed, to which he laughs and snorts a dismissive, “c’mon bro.” The administration asks if they can get a team of Ivy Leaguers on it instead. 

paramount Pictures just dropped enough news to fill a whole year’s worth of Hall H Comic-Con panels. Transformers, Star Trek, Sonic, Ninja Turtles, Halo, Quiet Place, and more all had significant news revealed during a company investors’ call Tuesday and here’s how it broke down.

Obviously, we know there’s a lot of Star Trek on paramount+. But the state of the theatrical film has been up in the air for a while. Well, no more. Deadline broke the news, and J.J. Abrams confirmed, that a new Star Trek film is likely to film starting later this year featuring the original cast. No, not that original cast—Abrams’ original cast, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana. Matt Shakman is directing.

That alone would be massive news but it’s just the start. We already knew that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was coming in 2023. But now we know that it’ll be “the first of three new installments” in the franchise. A CG animated movie is also coming in 2024 and a new Transformers animated show will be on Nickelodeon in the fall. It’s called Transformers: Earthspark. And here’s a look.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is coming to theaters April 8, but that’s just the beginning. A third film in the feature film franchise is already in the works and a TV spinoff starring Knuckles is on the way to paramount+. And yes, Knuckles will still be voiced by Idris Elba.

We’ll keep going. The new Halo show doesn’t debut until March 24 but a second season has already been greenlit. “Halo is an expansive, world-building opportunity for paramount+, and we’re thrilled to give fans a second season to look forward to before we launch the series next month,” said Tanya Giles, chief programming officer of paramount+. “Halo will deliver a thrill-ride for fans of the game and non-gamers alike, as it ties together stunning visuals with a deeper look at the personal stories behind these iconic characters, all set within an epic battle for the future of humanity.”

Anything else? Yes. A new Quiet Place movie will be released next year from director Michael Sarnoski followed by a A Quiet Place Part III in 2025. Teen Wolf (the TV show based the 1980s movie) is coming back as its own movie that’ll act as a set up for a paramount+ series called Wolf Pack.

Anything happening under the sea? Of course. Three new SpongeBob “character-driven movies” are being made exclusively for paramount+, with “a big theatrical tentpole” in the works as well. Sticking with animation, 2023 will see the theatrical release of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film from producer Seth Rogen as well as “a series of villain-driven” Turtles films exclusively for the streaming service.

What about for the kids? A Blue’s Clues movie called Blue’s Big City Adventure, is coming this year, with a full-length Baby Shark also in development next year (and now that song is stuck in your head). There’s a new Dora the Explorer animated series on the way too as well as a live-action series inspired by the recent theatrical movie.

Andrea Riseborough in New Trailer for ‘Here Before’ Mystery Thriller

“She said she’s been to the graveyard.” “Well, she’s never been here.” Saban Films has revealed the official US trailer for an Irish mystery thriller titled Here Before, from filmmaker Stacey Gregg making his feature debut. Andrea Riseborough stars as a distraught mother, haunted by the death of her young daughter, who develops an all-consuming obsession over the neighbor girl who she believes is the reincarnation of her child. When the new neighbors move in, she becomes transfixed by their young daughter, Megan. Eerily, she seemingly knows far too many specific details of their family life and displays similar mannerisms of their dead daughter. Is the trauma of losing her child causing Laura to lose grip on reality, or is Megan something else? The cast includes Niamh Dornan, Jonjo O’Neill, Eileen O’Higgins, Martin McCann, Lewis McAskie. As always, Riseborough is exceptionally talented, which makes this such a chilling film to watch.

When a new family moves in right next door to Laura (Andrea Riseborough) and her family, their young daughter, Megan (Niamh Dornan), quickly captivates her, soon stirring up painful memories of her own daughter, Josie, who died several years previously in an accident. Here Before is both written and directed by Irish filmmaker Stacey Gregg, making his feature directorial debut after one other short previously. This initially premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival last year, and then also played at the Galway Film Fleadh in the summer. There’s a leader of the jhund, Ankush “Don” Masram (Ankush Gedam) and a young mother Raziya (Raziya Kazi) who walks out on her good for nothing husband, but Manjule doesn’t go into the minute details of most lives. No inner world revealed. No explanations given for why they are how they are. Are the motives needed? He may not justify the rowdyism—the ragpicking, the coal stealing, the mobile trading and chain snatching, the liquor brewing, the street fighting, the girl chasing, the whitener addiction—but he also doesn’t render the kids as out and out apologetic offenders. What he offers is a social sketch, the milieu and the divides that fester there—bird’s eye view of two different kinds of playgrounds separated by a boundary and judgmental players and officials of the privileged world who refuse to shake hands with the “other”. And you know in an instant then who the actual offender is. The discomfort increases, as fiction turns real with each of the kids narrating her/his stories of a horrifying life, like testimonials, while “Saare jahan se achcha” plays in the background. An attempt to replicate, though not as successfully, the national anthem moment of Fandry. Pedantic, perhaps, but on point, if not entirely powerful.

In this takeover of the subaltern and the dispossessed, the professor (played by who better than the once anti-Establishment, angry young man) is the rightful facilitator and ally, not the protagonist. Yes, he does get the crucial “speech in the court” moment where he talks about kids having to run away from injustices and how they have to struggle to live but it’s the kids (the characters as well as the actors who play them) who linger on, long after the film. Bachchan is relatively muted, and graciously so. And it’s amusing to see the how the untrained, untutored kids hold their own vis a vis him, never once dwarfed by the actor’s overwhelming presence, something that the most accomplished actors are susceptible to. Veterans like Kishore Kadam, Chhaya Kadam, the talented Arjun Radhakrishnan, Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar (Archi and Parshya from Sairat) and Somnath Awaghade (Jabya from Fandry) complete the picture.

Manjule does try to pack in too much in three long hours, tries to check too many boxes. He plays with skin colours—the fair-dark divide. He extends the boundaries of our own definition of cute—yes, a dishevelled street urchin could be sweet too and not just a chubby fair blue-eyed one. There are token nods to woman power. To broaden the parameters of the marginalised and the disempowered he willy-nilly also brings in the plight of the tribals, stereotyping of Muslims and the prejudices against a monolithic North-East into his frame. Yes, it’s about forming solidarities but also blurs the focus.

A Higher Power Takes Over in Horror Film ‘A Banquet’ Official Trailer

“I can feel something inside of me…” IFC Midnight has revealed the official trailer for an indie horror film from the UK titled A Banquet, made by a Scottish filmmaker named Ruth Paxton. This premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and hit a bunch of others including Fantastic Fest, Beyond Fest, Montclair, and London. Widowed mother Holly is radically tested when her teenage daughter Betsey experiences a profound enlightenment and insists her body is no longer her own, but in service to a higher power. Bound to her newfound faith Betsey refuses to eat, but loses no weight. The film stars Sienna Guillory, Jessica Alexander, Ruby Stokes, Lindsay Duncan, Kaine Zajaz. TIFF adds: “Between discomforting body horror and simmering psychodrama, Paxton skillfully escalates a common [dinner table] dynamic towards the upsetting but profound parental fears of being unable to understand one’s own child, what they want or need, and how to protect them from… an unforgiving world.” It looks extraordinarily unsettling. So creepy.

Netflix’s 2022 Super Bowl Spot – Featuring Teasers for Lots of Movies

“Tonight… is movie night!” Netflix has debuted their new 60-second Super Bowl TV spot from the Big Game today, featuring a melange of various films they’re releasing through the year. It’s a more condensed version of their recent 2022 Movie Preview they posted last week. And it also includes another 30-sec teaser for The Adam Project, which was also revealed with the first trailer last week, too. “After a quick huddle, we’re calling an audible and wrapping up our supersized preview with an exclusive new look at our family-friendly, time-travel adventure, The Adam Project. Watch the spot! And after the big game, make tonight a movie night with Netflix.” It also features footage from movies like Gray Man, Me Time, The School for Good Evil, Day Shift, and others. Gotta say, I’m glad Netflix is actually putting a bit more oomph into their promotion recently. All of these look good! Keep an eye out for them and many more on Netflix soon.

New Delhi [India], March 17 (ANI): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday said that all the truth-seekers should watch the movie ‘The Kashmir Files’.
His remarks came after meeting ‘The Kashmir Files’ director Vivek Agnihotri and actress Pallavi Joshi in New Delhi.
Congratulating them, Bhagwat said, “Every truth-seeker must see this film, a brilliantly written script, a complete artistic work, a thorough research.”

The movie, which had released in theatres on March 11, stars Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumaar, and others.
It revolves around the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990 and has been directed by Vivek Agnihotri, known for films like ‘Tashkent Files’, ‘Hate Story’ and ‘Buddha in a Traffic Jam’.
The film has been declared tax-free in several states including Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Goa, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand. (ANI)
