“I wish I could take you out… champagne and oysters.” Sony Pictures Classics has debuted a second official trailer for the period romance Mothering Sunday, which first premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival last summer. It also played at the Toronto and London Film Festivals – finally opening in US theaters (NY LA) this month after many delays. Adapted from the novel by Graham Swift, the film is about a maid living in post-World War I England who secretly plans to meet with the man she loves before he leaves to marry another woman. It’s described as an “luminous, intensely moving tale” of romance and love, “but events that neither can foresee will change the course of Jane’s life forever.” The film stars Odessa Young and Josh O’Connor as the two lovers, with Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Glenda Jackson, Simon Shepherd, Olivia Colman, and Colin Firth. This is a beautiful trailer! The best one yet (better than the other US and the UK one), really capturing the profound emotions and anguish and pleasure this film explores. Definitely worth a look.

Here’s the second official US trailer for Eva Husson’s Mothering Sunday, direct from YouTube:

You can also watch the first US trailer for Husson’s Mothering Sunday here or the other UK trailer here.

On a warm spring day in 1924, house maid and foundling Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) finds herself alone on Mother’s Day. Her employers, Mr and Mrs Niven (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman), are out and she has the rare chance to spend an afternoon of abandon with her secret lover, Paul (Josh O’Connor), the boy from the manor house nearby who is Jane’s long-term romantic love despite the fact that he’s engaged to be married to another woman, a childhood friend and daughter of his parents’ friends. But events that neither can foresee will change the course of Jane’s life forever… Mothering Sunday is directed by the acclaimed French filmmaker / writer Eva Husson, director of the movies Those for Whom It’s Always Complicated, Bang Gang, and Girls of the Sun previously. The screenplay is written by Alice Birch, adapted from the novel by Graham Swift. This initially premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. It opens in the UK beginning in November. Sony Classics will release Husson’s Mothering Sunday in select US theaters starting on March 25th, 2022 this month – after a small awards run last year. We still don’t know what this is really about, right? We still don’t know what the big, scary “thing” is that comes to town? Only time will tell. Universal has debuted a basketball TV spot for Jordan Peele’s new film Nope, which seems to be a sci-fi thriller involving an extraterrestrial appearance in a small town. The spot features acclaimed NBA played Steph Curry playing at a basketball court in this town, when the lights go out and he goes outside and looks up and exclaims “nope!” Along with the first trailer back in February, this footage is all so mysterious and interesting. Nope’s main cast features Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Barbie Ferreira, Michael Wincott, Donna Mills, and Terry Notary. We still have no idea if this is actually about aliens (or not?), but that’s definitely what all these trailers are hinting at. Enjoy.

Here’s the latest Steph Curry TV Spot for Jordan Peele’s Nope, direct from Universal’s YouTube:

You can rewatch the first official trailer for Jordan Peele’s Nope here, to see the first look reveal again.

‘Avatar 2’ Footage Astonishes Audience at CinemaCon

CinemaCon delegates, donning their 3D glasses, gave a wildly enthusiastic welcome to their return to Pandora with a first look at the stunning teaser trailer for James Cameron’s newly titled sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, Wednesday during Disney’s slate presentation in Caesars Palace’s Colosseum.

“We need to make sure [audiences] have an experience they can’t get anywhere else, and that needs to be exclusively in theaters,” said producer Jon Landau in introducing the teaser trailer, which will be released next week, exclusively in theaters, ahead of Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Landau additionally announced plans to re-release the original Avatar on Sept. 23 in theaters, with restored picture and sound.

Related Stories

Landau reported that each of the four sequels — the first, The Way of Water, is scheduled for a Dec. 16 release — will center on returning Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, and Na’vi Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldaña, and their family, and the lengths they go to keep each other safe; each is a stand-alone film that “together are an even greater connected epic saga.”

In a story set more than a decade after the events of the first film, the dazzling footage in the teaser trailer focuses on Jake and Neytiri and includes gorgeous shots of Pandora’s bright blue water — both above and below the surface; Toruk, the flying creatures introduced in the first film; and new whale-like creatures.

Returning characters also include Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch. The film also features some big-name newcomers including Vin Diesel and Cameron’s Titanic star Kate Winslet. Behind-the-scenes talent includes director of photography Russell Carpenter, Cameron’s Oscar-winning Titanic DP.  Avatar’s visual effects are back at Weta FX in New Zealand, again led by senior VFX supervisor and four-time Oscar winner Joe Letteri.

Released in 2009, Cameron’s Avatar quickly became the top-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office, with more than $2.8 billion. It was also credited for ushering in the digital 3D era and introducing new production tools and techniques in areas such as performance capture and virtual production. Its sequel is one of the more anticipated films of the past decade.

“We set out to push the limits to what cinema can do,” said Cameron in a video message from New Zealand, where he’s making the movie. He reminded exhibitors that they are “partners,” adding, “Jon and I are here with you. We can do this.”

As it has in recent years, CinemaCon sponsor Dolby has outfitted the Colosseum — CinemaCon’s main venue — with Dolby Atmos immersive sound and Dolby Vision, meaning they installed the company’s premium 4K, high dynamic range, high frame rate and 3D capable laser-based projection system. This enabled the Avatar 2 filmmakers to put on quite a show.

Cameron, Landau and their Lightstorm Entertainment, along with 20th Century and Disney, is expected to offer Avatar 2 in a wide variety of formats to support the range of theater installations, including the use of 3D, 4K and a high frame rate of 48 frames per second.

On Tuesday at CinemaCon, John Fithian, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, noted that Avatar 2 will have more versions than any movie “in the history of movies” when it arrives in theaters: “We are talking about high resolution, high frame rates, 3D, Imax, PLF, different sound systems and in 160 different languages.”

“He is working very closely with our members around the world to show his movie in the best possible way,” Fithian said. “Jim is uniquely driven. He’s brilliant. There may be only a couple of hundred screens in [some of the formats] but he wants [Avatar 2] on those screens. It’s time to make sure your light levels are correct and everything about the picture is correct. We’re excited about it.”

Before the release of 2009’s Avatar, Cameron created more than 100 versions of deliverables in various light levels, 2D and 3D, resolutions and sound systems. It was the most ambitious digital release at that time.

Cameron previously used CinemaCon as a platform to discuss the potential of high frame rates. The filmmaker gave a presentation at CinemaCon 2011 with a comparison of 3D content — a medieval dinner and action scene — projected at 24 fps, 48 fps and 60 fps. As the clips played, Cameron shared his observations, including some distracting strobing that occurs in 24 fps (which has been blamed for why some viewers get headaches when viewing 3D) and pointed to a smoother higher frame rate image.

Bad Bunny To Play Spider-Man Character El Muerto In Standalone Marvel Pic For Sony

Looking to continue to expand and diversify its universe of Marvel characters, Sony has announced a El Muerto movie is in development with Latin Grammy winner and platinum-selling recording artist Bad Bunny attached to star. The news came out of Cinemacon during Sony’s panel where Bad Bunny made a surprise appearance.

The character of El Muerto aka Juan Carlos was a super powered wrestler who originally fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match in which he nearly unmasked the webslinger before being stung by Spider-Man with a paralyzing poison. After his oppressor El Dorado came to claim his life, he was saved by Spider-Man, after which the two team up to defeat Dorado.

El Muerto would mark the first Latin superhero to get his own film in the universe of Marvel characters, coming right after Sony recently dated Madame Web, which marked the first female character from the Spider-Man universe to get her own film.

Though El Muerto isn’t as popular as Venom or Kraven the Hunter, Sony’s rush to get this film into development had a lot to do with Bad Bunny’s persistence in finding that right superhero property for himself. The superstar is set to make his major studio debut in the highly-anticipated action pic Bullet Train on July 29, a project Sony is very high on and has already led to Aaron Taylor-Johnson landing the lead role in Kraven the Hunter. The same situation looks to have happened with Bad Bunny with execs extremely high on the final Bad Bunny footage from the film.

Following recent meetings to figure out a starring vehicle for him, the multi-hyphenate took matters into his own hands and began mining the Spider-Man library for Latin characters that would suit him, eventually coming across El Muerto. The studio loved the idea and the hope is to move fast on the project given Bad Bunny’s busy touring and acting schedule.

Besides Bullet Train, he was also recently seen in Narcos: Mexico and has Cassandro coming out with Gael García Bernal. He also recently wrapped his arena tour El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo.

He is repped by UTA and Rimas Entertainment.

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch, who introduced Bad Bunny onstage tonight, said that El Muerto will come out on Jan. 12, 2024.

Benito Antonio Marinez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny told Panitch working on Bullet Train was “An amazing experience. David (Leitch) is awesome. I loved working with him on my first film and now with this opportunity to bring El Muerto to life. It’s amazing, it’s incredible. I love wrestling. I grew up watching wrestling and I’m a wrestler. I’m a former champion so this is why I love this character. I think it’s the perfect role to me and it will be epic.”

This played at the Tribeca Film Festival and American Black Film Festival last year. When high school student Jaylen Brown finds himself under suspicion after his friend disappears during a party, prejudice quickly begins to boil to the surface of his small southern town as all fingers point toward him. The film stars Skylan Brooks, Shane West, Hart Denton, Diamond White, Rutina Wesley, Bill Engvall, and Taryn Manning. As an indie film this looks quite interesting, with some freaky twists turns in the script. Just what are these aliens up to in this small town?

Here’s the first official trailer for Delmar Washington’s Outsiders, direct from Vertical’s YouTube:

Sena BKC rally: Uddhav Thackeray attacks RSS, BJP; says fake Hindutva party is misleading the nation

  • Targets BJP over attempts to separate Mumbai from Mumbai warns that it will be foiled

  • Shiv Sena will fight BJP’s tactics to destabilize discredit state by deploying central probe agencies

  • Lashes out at BJP for killing of Kashmiri Pandit while providing security cover to Somaiya and Rana

  • Ridicules estranged brother MNS chief Raj Thackeray for projecting himself as Balasaheb Thackeray by wearing saffron shawl and staking claim over Hindutva

Shiv Sena President and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday tears into former ally BJP, RSS and estranged brother and MNS chief Raj Thackeray on a range of issues including the politically hot Hindutva, polarization, killing of a Kashmiri pandit, Centre’s attempt to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra, burgeoning inflation and unemployment, campaign to discredit Maharashtra by deployment of central probe agencies and Centre’s go by to the principles of federalism At a massive rally, against the backdrop of Azaan Hanuman Chalisa controversy and attacks by BJP and MNS, Thackeray declared that Shiv Sena has not left Hindutva and warned that any attempt to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra will be strongly foiled. Thackeray without naming BJP claimed that the fake Hindutva party is misleading the nation.

Thackeray warned that his party will fight against the BJP led government’s attempt to destabilize the state by deploying central probe agencies.

Thackeray said Shiv Sena had kicked ‘donkeys’ out when they broke the alliance with the party post the 2019 Assembly election in the state. “Devendra Fadnavis said that we are gadha [donkey] dhari Hindus. But let me tell you, we kicked donkeys out when we broke alliance with you [BJP]. Our 25 years were wasted in alliance with the BJP,’’ he reiterated.

Our Hindutva is gadadhari [with a mace]. Rahul Bhat was killed by terrorists at Tehsil’s office in JK, now what will you [BJP] do? Will you read Hanuman Chalisa there?” he asked.

The Shiv Sena has claimed that its Hindutva is ‘gadadhari’ (with a mace) while the BJP’s is ‘ghantadhari’ (with bells).

“Some fake Hindutvawadis are misleading our nation. Balasaheb Thackeray taught us that we don’t need Hindus who ring bells in temples. We want Hindus who can thrash terrorists. We have saffron blood in our veins. Don’t try to challenge us,” said Thackeray.

“Who are you to decide our Hindutva? Just because we have gone with Congress we are less Hindutva? Are all parties that joined BJP’s NDA Hindutva parties? What about Nitish Kumar who said the loudspeaker issue is nonsense?” he said.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has never been part of the freedom struggle. The Samyukta Maharashtra movement was created by my grandfather and assisted by my father and his brother Shrikant. But you know who dropped out. The Bharatiya Jan Sangh,” said the Chief Minister.

Thackeray countered the BJP’s criticism for going with the Congress, that is its ideological opposite.” They say we went with Congress. We went openly. What about your morning swearing in? Yes, we went with NCP. Had they been with you, you would be singing praises of people like Nawab Malik,” he said. The “bogus Hindutva BJP” formed an alliance with Mehbooba Mufti, he claimed.

Thackeray lashed out at his estranged brother and MNS chief Raj Thackeray for projecting himself as the Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray by wearing saffron shawl and staking claim over Hindutva. ‘’One day he is taking up the Marathi issue, another day Hindutva,’’ he said. He referred to Sanjay Dutt starrer Munnabhai MBBS for Raj Thackeray’s present role and his proximity to BJP.

Thackeray also criticised the Centre over its decision to provide security cover to Kirit Somaiya and Navneet Rana terming them ‘’leaking pots’’ while urging Shiv Sainiks to neglect them.

Thackeray alleged a conspiracy of separating Mumbai from Maharashtra saying that neither BJP nor Fadnavis will be able to do it. ‘’BJP led government is implementing the Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train. Are you going to travel? (he asked the Shiv Sainiks). It is a part of the Centre’s plan to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra. Shiv Sena will strongly fight it and foil such a plan,’’ he roared.

Further, Shiv Sena president criticised the Centre for delaying the payment of GST arrears and not handing over the Railways’ land for Dharavi redevelopment and Kanjurmarg land for Metro 3 car shed.

CM also criticised the opposition by the Archaeological Department’s opposition to the state government’s plan for the restoration of ancient temples. Besides, the Centre is sitting on the state government’s proposal to provide classical status to Marathi language. He asked Fadnavis to take up these issues with the Centre to resolve them at the earliest.

Thackeray’s sarcastic dig Raj Thackeray

Thackeray took a sarcastic dig at his cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, likening him to Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt’s character from the 2003 movie ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’.

Thackeray remarked that in the way Sanjay Dutt’s character was seeing Mahatma Gandhi, Raj Thackeray was seeing late Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray. He further jibed that in the end, Sanjay Dutt accepted there is ‘chemical locha’ (imbalance) in his brain and Raj Thackeray too would have to accept it.

“Someone told me that there is one case in Maharashtra like ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’. Here is one case in Maharashtra. He (Raj Thackeray) feels like being Balasaheb Thackeray. He wears saffron shawls, sometimes speaks about Marathi, and other times about Hindutva,” said Thackeray.

Character actor Fred Ward, known for role in The Right Stuff, dead at age 79

Veteran film and television actor Fred Ward, 79, best known for playing gruff, tough-guy roles in movies such as Tremors, Escape from Alcatraz, and The Right Stuff, died on Sunday, his publicist said on Friday.

No cause or place of death was released, as per his family’s wishes, publicist Ron Hofmann said.

Ward took a roundabout way into acting, after serving three years in the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s and then working as an Alaskan lumberjack, a boxer (where his nose was broken three times), and a short-order cook, according to a biography provided by Hofmann.

His career spanned more than four decades, starting with foreign films in the early 1970s and stretched through 2015 with his final role in the television series True Detective, according to his IMDB page.

He made his first U.S. film appearance playing a cowboy in the 1975 film, Hearts of the West. But his breakthrough role came when he played opposite Clint Eastwood in the 1979 film Escape from Alcatraz.

“The unique thing about Fred Ward is that you never knew where he was going to pop up, so unpredictable were his career choices,” the release said.

He played everything from an astronaut, cowboy, Vietnam war soldier, a chain-smoking police detective-turned-assassin, to a hero battling giant worms, the release said.

In 1983 he portrayed Mercury 7 astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom in the adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s book, The Right Stuff. That same year he appeared in the action movie Uncommon Valor with Gene Hackman and in the drama Silkwood with Meryl Streep.

Ward won a Golden Globe and the Venice Film Festival ensemble prize for his performance in Short Cuts in 1993, his biography said.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Marie-France Ward, and a son, Django Ward.
