My husband and I, when we were dating, would go to the movies once a week. Nobody else at the time had assigned seating. You know when you used to go to the theater, and you’d have to get there super early, searching for two spots, and you knew where you’d like to sit and those seats are never available because someone’s there already, and you’re — you know, “Excuse me, pardon me, excuse me”? Here, you picked your favorite seat, you walked in and you sat down. Once we had kids, all of us would go to the exact same seats every time: F25, 24, 23, 22. They allowed us to be near the end, but also to put our feet up on a metal bar right below us. And as you wait, they always have great trivia going up on the screen and movie music playing, and then the usher would come and the experience will begin.
All the ushers and everybody who worked there clearly love movies: You could ask them which film they would recommend, and they would go into detail why they loved it. Right before the movie would start, an usher would come to the front of the theater and announce what movie you’re about to see, the running time, the rating and some little tidbit of information about the film. And it was always fun because there would be ushers who were completely shy, and it was probably horrifying for them that they have to do this; others would give these long explanations and you could tell that this was just their moment in the sun.
When “Black Panther” came out, we got our seats that we loved two weeks in advance. We knew that it was going to be packed. And the audiences there, there’s just a love of film. So you just knew that you were going to have fun with the crowd as well, because people clap at the end of movies they love and cheer during trailers they’re hyped about. I loved seeing other families going for that same experience, and then being able to talk about it afterward in the lobby. You knew the people were there to see the movie and they respected the filmmaking.
To hear that the ArcLight, of all theaters, was shutting down was a shock. It was kind of a blow to that fantasy that we were going to get back to where we were. Streaming has been great during this time, and it was incredible for “The Old Guard” to reach the global audience that it did. But I still love theaters. I love the collective experience of watching a film with people I don’t know who are all feeling the same things.
As I write this, India is recording over 2 lakh Covid cases and over 1000 deaths daily. After setting their trolls on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for offering sensible advice, the BJP has finally taken a few tips, like allowing international vaccines in—this will take a few months, sadly. Of course, the media makes it sound like it was Nationalist Nero’s idea, or else they won’t get government ads and the Income Tax chaps may pop in for intense midnight chats.
The BJP’s very own ideas to fight the virus are downright ridiculous. Every senior in the party including Nationalist Nero, the Union Health Minister and Niti Aayog’s Dr VK Paul has recommended ayurvedic remedies like turmeric lattes and chyawanprash. Oddly enough when their own people like RSS chief Bhagwat and UP CM Adityanath tested positive, they were rushed into hospitals as “precautionary measures” although they only had mild symptoms. These are not reassuring ads for chyawanprash. Also, it makes desperate people who cannot get hospital beds for seriously ill family members weep.
As always, the BJP is fighting perceptions instead of the virus. An example: Countless funeral fires at a Lucknow crematorium drew gasps on social media and people questioned the number of reported deaths. The morning after, UP authorities blocked the view with metal sheets and pinned a notice that said unauthorised people were no longer allowed to enter the crematorium since it was a “COVID-19 affected area”. Trespassers were also warned of strict action. Moral: If you don’t know the truth, you will be happier with the BJP.
Finally, Mother Teresa has been overshadowed by a new saint—a BJP supporter at that, yay! While Bhakts are bragging about Saint Billionairebhai’s generosity, activist Saket Gokhale has brought them back to earth with a thud. I quote him below:
While the importance of the Mughal period has been diminished, rulers like Babur have been depicted as ‘invaders’ in the chapter under ‘Medieval History’.
In the syllabus comprising ‘Modern India’, the importance of the role played by Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru has been underplayed. The 1857 rebellion has been termed as “the first war for India’s independence”, a terminology coined by Hindu Mahasabha leader and Right wing ideologue VD Savarkar.
This is a brief list of some of the major changes in the draft History syllabus prepared by the UGC:
Topics such as “Eternity of Synonyms Bharat” and religious literature like the Vedas, Vedangas, Upanishads, Smritis and Puranas have been included in the first paper of History (Honours) in Delhi University (DU).
Kautilya’s Arthashastra, the poems of Kalidas, Ayurvedic text Charak Samhita etc which are considered inclusive and secular have been dropped.
The third paper in the draft syllabus includes features of the “Indus-Saraswati Civilisation” and its continuity, fall and survival. The Saraswati – a mythological river – is mentioned in the Vedas but its provenance is disputed. The Sangh Parivar insists that the Saraswati existed and symbolised continuity from the Harappan era to later Hindu periods, in contradistinction to the theory of the Aryan invasion.
The new syllabus uses the word “invasion” in connection with several Muslim rulers such as Babar – a term that the existing History syllabus shuns.
The references to Dalit politics in the chapters under ‘Modern India’ are absent from the new syllabus.
An analysis of the content suggests that leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel and Bhim Rao Ambedkar receive less attention compared with the existing syllabus.
Most importantly, works by prominent historians such as R.S. Sharma’s book on ancient India and Irfan Habib’s book on medieval India have been dropped.
The Objective section of the draft syllabus reads: “We have also tried to develop terminology befitting our National context and our exploratory nature. This will help the students to articulate their own complex ideas regarding various themes in History.”
National Herald tried to contact noted historian Irfan Habib for his comments on the issue but he was not available. The story will be updated as and when he replies.
James Dean, Jeanne Eagels, Ralph Richardson, Massimo Troisi and Spencer Tracy were also nominated after their deaths (twice, in Dean’s case), while Heath Ledger and Peter Finch are the only two actors to have won.
Your best streaming bets this week include a four-star Netflix release, a gay romance, a likely Oscar nominee for best international film and two killer-diller horror films.

“The White Tiger”: Ramin Bahrani’s fierce satire rips into India’s caste system, showing how so-called “nice” rich folks betray and mistreat the “help” even though they consider themselves woke. Sound familiar? Funny and never dull, “Tiger” makes a star out of newcomer Adarsh Gourav, who taps into the dark comic spirit of Aravind Adiga’s 2008 award-winning novel. Gourav plays Balram, the likeable narrator hired as a driver for two silver-spooned lovebirds (Rajkummar Rao and Priyanka Chopra Jonas — absolutely perfect in the role). When a tragic incident happens (avoid the trailer, it gives away too much), Balram discovers just how dispensable he is to his employers. “Tiger ” is a beast of a drama, especially when it lets it claws out. Details: 4 stars; available Jan. 22 on Netflix.
“No Man’s Land”: There’s a fear early on that this border drama will be a white-washed affair, focusing exclusively on the handsome, cocky college-bound Jackson (Jake Allyn) and his odyssey after he accidentally shoots dead a young boy crossing the border. While the Jake Allyn/David Barraza screenplay does focus on Jackson, “No Man’s Land” balances the white man’s angst with the pain and desire for blood vengeance of the boy’s father, a priest (Jorge A. Jimenez). No one comes out a winner, certainly not Jackson’s parents (Frank Grillo and Andie MacDowell). Director Conor Allyn tells a potent story for our times, one made all the sharper by George Lopez in a supporting role as a no-nonsense Texas Ranger. One complaint: At just a shade under 2 hours, “No Man’s Land” feels too long. Details: 3 stars, available Jan. 22 for streaming on various platforms.
“Identifying Features”: Like “No Man’s Land,” Fernanda Valadez’s bold award winner is a border-themed tragedy, but delivers more of a blow. It’s about a mother’s risky journey to find her bound-for-America son who vanished near the border. The wrenching screenplay from Valadez and Astrid Rondero follows the perspective of determined Magdalena (Mercedes Hernandez) who leaves her home in Guanajuato to uncover the truth. Valdez’s artistic, disturbing drama grows in intensity as Magdalena confronts a mother’s ultimate nightmare. Details: 3½; available Jan. 22 as part of the Virtual Cinema series at the the Roxie Theatre.
“Breaking Fast”: Director/writer Mike Mosallam prefers sweet over saccharine and “Fast” is all the better for it. His first feature is a warmhearted charmer about a romance between two West Hollywood men, one of whom is Muslim. Mossallam gets tender performances from leads Haaz Sleiman and Michael Cassidy and creates conflicts that avoid cliches. There are many simple joys to behold, from a welcoming Muslim family to the romantic chemistry between the two leads. “Breaking Fast” is a lovely antidote to the disharmony of these times, a soothing, comforting story about the importance of connection and understanding. Details: 3 stars; available Jan. 22 to rent and stream On Demand.
“Brothers By Blood”: Tough-guy author Pete Dexter wrote the novel it’s based on. Joel Kinnaman, Matthias Schoenaerts and Ryan Phillippe give it their all. So why does this Philly gangster drama feel so uninspired? Maybe it’s because we’ve traveled down this road too many times already — to the destination where sins of fathers and age-old family vendettas destroy lives generation after generation. Everyone’s miserable in “Brothers,” and this joyless exercise from stylish director Jérémie Guez has nothing new to say. Details: 2 stars, available Jan. 22 on various platforms.
“Bloody Hell”: Actor Ben O’Toole deserves a medal for spending about 50 percent of this gonzo horror show from Alister Grierson dangling from a basement ceiling. His fit Rex is no easy prey for a team of Finnish crackpots who have abducted him and want to carve more than a few pounds of flesh out of the disgraced viral sensation. Grierson’s maniacal, hyperactive work certainly lives up to its title, thanks to O’Toole’s engaging demeanor and comic timing and one hell of a screenplay from Robert Benjamin. This is bloody good stuff. Details: 3 stars; Streaming now on various platforms.
“Hunted”: Here’s one for the artsy crowd that loves a good scare — a moody takeoff of the Little Red Riding Hood fable that will give you night sweats. Director and co-screenwriter Vincent Paronnaud’s surreal reinvention finds Eve (Lucie Debay) meeting a predator (Arieh Worthalter) and a twitchy sidekick (Ciaran O’Brien) at a bar. The night rapidly descends into a night of terror in the woods. By film’s end it’s not clear who was the hunted and who was prey. This is a horror film festering with outrage over toxic men. Details: 3 stars. available now on Shudder!.
For movie theatres trudging through 2020, there was one shining hope in the shrinking summer release schedule: Tenet.
The latest offering from director Christopher Nolan was poised to be the film that would welcome fans back to theatres. But with COVID-19 cases still on the rise in many parts of the United States, Warner Bros. announced Tenet would be delayed a third time, with a new date yet to be announced.
“Our goals throughout this process have been to ensure the highest odds of success for our films while also being ready to support our theatre partners with new content as soon as they could safely reopen,” Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement.
And that could be bad news for Canadian film-goers, too.
A critical summer tent pole falls
Known for stunning special effects and wide-screen thrills, Nolan’s films such as Inception and The Dark Knight have earned the adjective “cinematic,” and Tenet appears to be no different. With a budget reported to be over $200 million US, the film features John David Washington (son of Denzel), Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki in a time-warping global adventure.

For theatre chains, Tenet wasn’t just another movie, it was the linchpin of what’s left of the summer season, says Anne Thompson, editor-at-large at culture site Indiewire. Thompson says major theatre chains in the U.S. were planning on reopening on July 31. A big part of those plans was the expectation of Tenet’s August 12 release date.
Indeed, shortly after Warner Bros. announced the delay, the head of the National Association of Theatre Owners responded. Speaking with Variety, John Fithian said distributors should “release their movies and deal with this new normal.” Fithian said there’s no guarantee more markets will be open later, and that films “should be released in markets where it is safe and legal to release them.”
The Nolan factor
As far as what happens next, Warner Bros. said it is not treating Tenet “like a traditional global day-and-date release.”
Translation: Tenet could open in other parts of the world before it opens in the U.S. But Jeff Bock, the senior box office analyst for entertainment research and data firm Exhibitor Relations Co., says a piecemeal strategy for Tenet may not work.

First, there’s the issue of spoilers. Besides the stunning cinematography, Christopher Nolan’s films are known for their shocking twists and turns. So Bock says a staggered release could be a problem.
“Once word gets out, it’s on Wikipedia and it ruins it for everyone.” he said.

As for Canadian films fans thinking they may see Tenet first, Bock says piracy fears could be another stumbling block. “It’s simply too risky to allow someone to capture the film on an HD camera — and Nolan wouldn’t like that,” said Bock.
Up until now much of what has been driving the Warner Bros. strategy has been staying on good terms with Nolan, a director who belongs to a rarefied club of of filmmakers. “He delivers Blockbusters — like Steven Spielberg and James Cameron,” says Indiewire’s Thompson. “They have enormous power.”
Too big to stream
And like Spielberg and Cameron, Nolan is a big believer in the theatrical experience and would be disappointed to see Tenet consigned to a streaming service.
Whereas some smaller films such as the recent Tom Hanks film Greyhound have gone straight to streaming, Bock says Tenet is simply too expensive to recoup enough money on a streaming or video-on-demand service. The only way to earn back its massive budget plus an estimated $150 million for marketing (much of which is already spent) is in brick-and-mortar movie theatres.

On that front, Bock says there are signs of hope in countries where movie theatres have reopened. Over the weekend the South Korean zombie film Peninsulaearned over $21 million US in Asian markets. Hollywood will be watching closely this weekend when the film Bloodshot opens in China.
In the meantime, North American theatre owners are nervously eyeing the movie release calendar with Mulan as the next major movie scheduled for August 21. Bock believes consumer demand to go see movies will return once its safe to do so. But Thompson says there could be fewer theatres in which to do so.
I have a solution: can’t Nolan find a wormhole and release TENET last summer?
Thompson points out the American movie chains AMC and Cineworld are already both debt-ridden. As they take on more debt to survive, the chains will begin shedding the weaker theatre locations. Which leads Thompson to ask, “How many more $200 million movies can the studios afford to make?”
While Warner Bros. says it will share a new Tenet date “imminently,” Bock says with the combination of a potential second wave of COVID-19 and the flu season in the fall, he doesn’t see Tenet realistically being released before 2021. He says Warner Bros.’ promise of a 2020 release date is “the same carrot that’s being dangled, they’re just dangling it further away now.”
Television dominated the roster of nominees for the 2021 MTV Movie TV Awards, which returns this May after a year-long hiatus due, at least in part, to the COVID-19 pandemic. But with the kind of crowd-pleasing, popcorn-ready films that the MTV awards show normally celebrates mostly delayed due to the pandemic, TV has taken a front seat this year.
Leading this year’s roster of nominees, announced on Monday: Marvel’s Disney Plus series “WandaVision,” which earned five nods — including best show, best performance in a show (Elizabeth Olsen), best hero (Teyonah Parris), best villain (Kathryn Hahn) and best fight (Wanda vs. Agatha).

Simultaneously, MTV also announced the nominees for the first-ever edition of its spin-off ceremony “Movie TV Awards: Unscripted.” In that show, VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race leads all nominees with four, followed by two for TLC’s “90 Day Fiancé,” Netflix’s “Bling Empire,” HBO Max’s “Legendary,” VH1’s “Love Hip Hop: Atlanta, MTV’s “The Challenge,” Netflix’s “Nailed It!” and MTV’s ubiquitous “Ridiculousness.”
In 2018, the show first integrated TV and film into joint categories such as “Best Hero,” “Best Villain,” “Best Duo,” “Best Fight” and “Best Comedic Performance.” This year, that means the majority of those categories are represented by TV. For example, best breakthrough performance has just one film entry (Maria Bakalova, from “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), while the rest are from streaming shows like “Ginny Georgia,” “Emily in Paris,” “Normal People” and “Bridgerton.”
Speaking of streaming, that’s how audiences watch TV now — and nearly every TV nominee comes from a streaming service, with the exception of single nods for “I May Destroy You,” “Killing Eve,” “Schitt’s Creek” and “Lovecraft Country.”
Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) received a posthumous nomination in the movie performance category this year. For most of its existence, the telecast was known as the MTV Movie Awards, taking advantage of the spring kickoff of the summer box office season. In 2017, the name was changed to the “MTV Movie TV Awards” and included television series for the first time. Also that year, the network went gender-neutral, embracing a decision to merge male and female performers into singular categories. Last year, MTV decided to move the Movie TV Awards to December, in order to capitalize on the start of movie awards season. But the pandemic put that decision on hold, and ultimately instead the network ran the special “MTV Movie TV Awards: Greatest of All Time,” hosted by Vanessa Hudgens, in December.
The 2021 “MTV Movie TV Awards” will air live on Sunday, May 16 from the Palladium in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET; the inaugural “Movie TV Awards: Unscripted” will air the following night, May 17 at 9 p.m. ET.

KOLKATA: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty’s meeting with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat raised many questions ahead of poll-bound West Bengal.
According to reports, the meeting that lasted for around 90 minutes has sparked speculations in political circles suggesting the actor and former Member of Parliament of joining the saffron party.
However, Chakraborty told the media that the meeting had nothing to do with politics as he is away from it now and wants to remain an actor.

Who is Mithun Chakraborty?
Mithun Chakraborty is a famous Indian actor, entrepreneur and social activist. He was the ex-member of Rajya Sabha of the Parliament. He bagged National film award for best actor for his debut movie Mrigaya (1976), an arthouse drama. He took birth in Dimla, Bengal on June 16, 1950. He completed his graduation in chemistry (Bachelor of Science) from Nilphamari Government College, Nilphamari.
Later because of his interest in art and drama, he joined and got a degree from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
His professional life:
In 1982, he worked as the character of Jimmy in the movie Disco Dancer which has gained much popularity not only in India but outside our country. And from then, he was popularly named ‘Disco Dancer’ for his hook steps in the popular song ‘i am a Disco Dancer’.
Mithun Chakraborty is married to Yogita Bali who is also an Indian actor and are blessed with 4 children. 3 sons and one daughter. Mimoh Chakraborty, his eldest son made his debut entry in Bollywood in a film released in 2008, Jimmy.
Apart from that, he was well-known for his amazing performance in some movies like wanted, boxer, sahhas, Surakksha, Avinash, Dance Dance, Agneepath, the Don, Jallaad, Mujrim etc. For the film Agneepath, he won Filmfare award for the best supporting role.
Later he won 2 National Film Awards for the movies Swami Vivekananda (1998) and Tahader Katha (1992). He worked in about three fifty movies in different languages and he made a record in Limca Book of record for working as lead actor in nineteen films in the year 1989.
Mithun Chakraborty made his debut movie Mrigaya (1976) directed by Mrinal Sen for which he was awarded National Film Award for best actor for his phenomenal work and acting skills. After that, he too was the part of certain movies named Do Anjaane (1976) and Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan (1977) which didn’t work very well for him.
TV shows:
He was the judged of the Indian TV reality show Dance India Dance which was on ZeeTV.
Sports:
Mithun had quite an interest in sports, especially in football and so he actively participated in the promotion of football in Bengal. He played an active role in raising funds for launching the football academy named the Bengal Football Academy.
He was also one of the members actively handling the Indian Cricket league team, the Royal Bengal Tigers.
