Scarlett Johansson Shares Her 6-Year-Old Daughter’s Reaction to Watching the Star in Home Alone 3

Scarlett Johansson‘s daughter wasn’t exactly thirsty for more after seeing her mom appear in a movie that most people probably don’t even realize is on the film star’s resume.

During her visit to Late Night on Monday, July 12, Scarlett told host Seth Meyers that she recently watched Home Alone 3 with 6-year-old daughter Rose, who she shares with ex-husband Romain Dauriac. Much to the 36-year-old Black Widow actress’ chagrin, Rose wasn’t particularly taken aback to learn that Scarlett has a role in the oft-forgotten 1997 sequel film.

When asked about having recently showed Rose one of her formative projects, Scarlett explained, “I guess it wasn’t intentional. We went through the series—we did Indiana Jones. Then we watched Back to the Future. And then, of course, naturally we did Home Alone. And I happened to be in the third Home Alone movie, and so I didn’t say anything to her because I thought she would make a big deal out of it.”

RSS creates ruckus during shooting of film based on Hindu-Muslim love story in temple premises

PALAKKAD: Complaint has been filed over RSS workers creating ruckus during the shooting of a Malayalam film based on a Hindu-Muslim love story in temple premises. RSS workers have prevented the shooting of the film, ‘Neeyam Nadi,’ directed by Meenakshi Lakshman. The shooting was undertaken in Kadambazhipuram Vayilyam temple.

The film artists have also said shooting equipment were also destroyed by RSS workers. The film workers have said that RSS workers even threatened them that they won’t allow shooting the film, which talks about Hindu-Muslim love story anywhere in the district. The shooting of the film had commenced in the temple premises after taking prior permission from the temple authorities but reports say that Sanghparivar activists asked the film crew to narrate the story of the film, after hearing the story they denied the nod for film shooting. The film crew is now gearing up to shift the shooting of the film to some other place.

‘In The Heights’ Makes Some Noise, Spreads Joy On The Big Screen

Companion viewing

“Meet Me in St. Louis” (1944)

“On the Town” (1949, first time a major studio shot musical numbers on location in New York)

“Royal Wedding” (1951)

“Million Dollar Mermaid” (1952)

“West Side Story” (1961)

Note: Director Jon M. Chu will be on TCM June 11 to discuss some classic films that inspired sequences in “In the Heights”

Before “Hamilton,” Lin-Manuel Miranda had a quieter success with a musical called “In the Heights,” which focused on the largely Dominican neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. The musical is now being brought to the screen by “Crazy Rich Asians” director Jon M. Chu.

Perspective

This year marks the 60th anniversary of “West Side Story” and “In the Heights” arrives as both a harkening back to the old Hollywood musical and a direct challenge to it.

‘West Side Story’ Prologue

The 1961 film “West Side Story” was an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical retelling Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” with lovers from rival Upper West Side street gangs in New York City. Although most of the film was shot on Hollywood sound stages, the prologue was shot on New York City streets in a way that felt revolutionary.

Originally, the play was conceived as being set in the Lower East Side with a Jewish Juliet and an Italian-Catholic Romeo. But New York’s cultural make up was changing in the 1950s and Jerome Robbins decided to change his initial idea and look to making the characters reflect the growing number of Puerto Ricans in Manhattan.

The play and the film challenged the traditional musical formula by confronting social issues ranging from immigration and racism to economic inequality and gang violence. Rita Moreno made history as the first Puerto Rican actress to be nominated for and to win an Academy Award for her role as Anita.

But looking at “West Side Story” from today, the film is also problematic, most notably in terms of the casting of white or non-Latino actors to play the Puerto Rican characters including the lead role of Maria (Natalie Wood in “brownface”) and the key supporting role of Bernardo (played by George Chakiris).

So to have “In the Heights” arrive in the year that “West Side Story” celebrates its 60th anniversary is a great way to see not just how far Hollywood has come but how much farther it still needs to go. Plus, the Steven Spielberg remake of “West Side Story” arrives this year with diversity in front of the camera if not at the helm.

Washington Heights

“In the Heights” opens with a request for a story. “Once upon a time,” we are told, “In a faraway land called Washington Heights …”

Washington Heights is indeed faraway from both Hollywood and the mainstream media’s representation of Latinx culture. And this 2021 film also feels faraway from what Washington Heights once was, so in a way it is a bit of a time capsule and, as re-imagined by Chu for the screen, it is also tinged with a mix of Hollywood magic and magic realism.

The sprawling story tries to encompass every aspect of the Heights, from corner stores and nail salons to street artists and the piragua guy. At the center is Usnavi (Anthony Ramos) who dreams of leaving the Heights to return to the Dominican Republic, where he likes to recall as the best of times. But there are others with dreams as well. Vanessa (Melissa Barrera) wants to design clothes, Nina (Leslie Grace) struggles with her desire to go to college, Benny (Corey Hawkins) who wants to excel at his job, and more.

The irresistible attraction of the film is two fold. First it gives us a glossy, big budget film about a diverse community we don’t often see highlighted. And second, the energetic, pulsing soundtrack grabs you and propels you even when the 143-minute running time starts to drag.

Making some noise

Chu has a background in movie musicals with credits in the “Step Up” franchise and on the Justin Bieber documentary. As he reveals in his upcoming introductions on TCM, he also wants “In the Heights” to pay homage to the musical that came before. So there is a pool number that recalls both Ester Williams and Busby Berkeley as well as a gravity defying dance that reminds us of Fred Astaire in “Royal Wedding”

Jon M. Chu Talks Million Dollar Mermaid

Reported by Tcm

The film, however, serves up a mixed bag with some numbers exploding with originality and flights of fancy while others feel flat with the camera planted in the audience and performers just singing into the lens. The film is at its best when it is pushing the bounds of reality. One of the truly stunning numbers involves Abuela Claudia (played by Olga Merediz, who originated the role on Broadway) remembering her past in Cuba. The sequence is visually gorgeous, evocative of old Cuba, and beautifully choreographed.

Olga Merediz recreates her role of Abuela Claudia in the film adaptation of “In the Heights.”

But I was less impressed by production numbers where Chu just tries to cram as many dancers as he can into the frame and then overcuts to give it more pace. Having just watched “Singin’ in the Rain,” I have it fresh in my memory how Gene Kelley wowed us with wide, uninterrupted takes so we could revel in the dance. Chu does this for some dances but not for all, and with the high energy music and choreography, Chu doesn’t need to do rapid cuts to keep our attention.

As someone who was born in New York, one thing I was disappointed in was that when Nina on two occasion urges us to listen to her city, we don’t hear anything that sounds like New York. Where are the sounds of taxis honking, sirens wailing, a diverse array of voices mixing and swirling from the street and up into windows, garbage trucks, basketballs, so much. While the California born and raised Chu conveys the sort of surreal, fantasy world of New York, he is not as skilled at conveying the grit and feel of the city as perhaps a native New Yorker like Spike Lee or Martin Scorsese might.

But despite some shortcomings, “In the Heights” proves appealing and brings the play to the screen with vibrancy and great joy, plus it gives voice to characters that too rarely get center stage.

“In the Heights” is streaming on HBO Max but do yourself a favor and show your support for movies on the big screen by going out to a cinema to see this one. It plays so much better on a big screen like an old MGM musical.

The Hypocrisy and Opportunism of the RSS’s ‘Outreach’ to Muslims

Last week, the Indian Express published two news stories side by side. The headline of the first one quotes Suraj Pal Singh Amu, the Haryana BJP spokesperson and Karni Sena chief as saying: “If you want to make history, Taimur, Aurangjeb, Babur won’t be born.” The other headline was in total contrast to what Amu says. It quotes Mohan Bhagwat, the RSS chief, as saying: “If a Hindu says that no Muslim should live here, that person is not Hindu.”

Amu is known for his communal bigotry and rabble rousing statements like the death threats to actor Deepika Padukone for her part in the movie, Padmavati which was later renamed as Padmaavat, and such statements can be expected from him especially when he has de facto state protection.

However, the statement of Mohan Bhagwat was surprising. He goes on to say: “Those who are indulging in lynching are going against Hindutva. Law should take its own course against them without any partiality.”

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS, the parent organisation of the Bharatiya Janata Party, is not exactly known for advancing the cause of communal harmony. Many of its members are known for their trenchant support to the idea of “Hindu Rashtra”. They regularly demonise minorities, especially Muslims, on various counts including their eating habits and, lately, with the made-up theory of “love jihad”.

I have first-hand experience of the Sangh’s myopic thought process after interacting with one of its subsidiaries (to which I was invited to give a presentation on border management), which was supposedly aimed at identifying the problems of the border population but was actually more interested in their religious profiling.

The RSS is trenchantly an anti-minority organisation. People belonging to this organisation have not only been making anti-minority statements but many also openly advocate violence against them. The hate speeches by Amu and the Jamia shooter are thee before us. Several reports suggest that Hindutva activists  were involved in fomenting the Northeast Delhi riots of 2020. However, the RSS and Bhagwat have maintained a stoic silence about several instances of atrocities against Muslims.

The RSS has never in the past seven years spoken a word against cow vigilantes involved in the lynching of Muslims for something as common as transporting cows from one place to another. The adverse effect on the social fabric of the country is for everyone to see. The amount of hatred towards Muslims in the seven-year rule of the BJP led by a sangh pracharak is palpable.

However, it has now reached a stage where it is proving to be counterproductive, especially in the absence of any concrete proof of improvement in the lives of masses. While what Bhagwat said is a welcome departure from what the others have been saying, one cannot ignore the context in which these remarks have been made.

Changed political scenario

The sudden change of heart in my view is directly related to the changed political scenario and perhaps an  internal assessment by the RSS pointing toward an impending loss of political power in Uttar Pradesh – the largest state and also the crucible of the Hindutva ideology of hatred towards minorities. The loss of West Bengal despite the BJP’s communal electioneering has shown that the discerning citizen understands that while religion is important in their lives, it is survival and the availability of the basic needs which is more important.

In 2019, the BJP got a mandate larger than 2014 because the common man thought that a five-year term was too small to implement the agenda of “sabka vikas” and the party deserved a longer tenure to show results. The common man got taken in by the propaganda against previous governments of ‘minority appeasement’ and saw a messiah in Modi who was setting things right for the majority Hindu community. The BJP also had the advantage of being first off the block in utilising social media to its advantage. Their fortunes in 2019 were further helped by the unfortunate Pulwama bombings and the follow up incidents.

The social media advantage has now almost been blunted with opposition parties fast catching up and several fact-checking sites debunking false propaganda. The credibility of prominent TV channels is at the lowest ebb as was apparent during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movement and also during elections in Bengal. The opposition also appears to be a little more organised to project an alternative narrative.

The lower- and middle-income groups continue to face a bleak future even after seven years of BJP rule. Rising unemployment and economic slowdown due to various factors with the second-highest employment generator – the realty sector – which was already reeling under the impact of demonetisation and the rollout of goods and services tax (GST), now facing the COVID-19 impact. High cost of fuel is the main contributor to inflation. The poor are hit by both high prices and a fall in real income. The manufacturing, retail business and inter-state movement of goods is severely affected by the poorly implemented GST.

Adding to the woes has been the dismal handling of the pandemic in the last two years. A poorly planned and hurriedly implemented nationwide lockdown in 2020 filled the roads with lakhs of people struggling to reach their homes. Total stoppage of transport of any kind forced them to walk thousands of miles, with many of them dying on the road.

Premature declaration of victory against the virus, utter failure to anticipate and prepare for the second wave which led to thousands of avoidable deaths and scenes of corpses abandoned in rivers has angered many amongst even strong supporters of the BJP.

The BJP’s insensitive handling of the farmers’ agitation and its failure to address their genuine concerns has united the masses despite the usual religious and caste divisions. Religious polarisation, therefore, may no longer be effective in garnering votes. The West Bengal assembly polls also established beyond doubt that Muslims almost totally voted as a block for whomsoever they thought will protect them against the communal politics of the BJP.

The sarsangchalak, therefore, has perhaps realised that in order to retain power in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP will need votes from all communities. The landslide victories of 2014, 2017 and 2019 are no longer guaranteed. With large states like West Bengal, Maharashtra and Rajasthan having been lost to opposition, the loss of Uttar Pradesh will sound a death knell for Hindutva protagonists. Hence the outreach.

The outreach by Mohan Bhagwat even though welcome is unlikely to have any effect on ground as the foot soldiers of the BJP and the RSS are too full of hatred towards Muslims. His statement is aimed only at addressing political concerns and does not reflect change of heart or deviation from communal ideology.
