But unfortunately, Jiles’ novel is completely fictional. In one of his interviews with Texas Monthly, Paulette Jiles spoke about the same. She revealed that Tom Hanks’ character is partially based on her friend Wayne Chisholm’s great great grandfather.

In the interview, Jiles revealed that her friend Chisolm’s ancestor was Aloysius Cornelius Kydd. Kydd used to read newspapers as part of public performances. Paulette found this piece was history amusing and fascinating at the same time and ended up using Kydd’s profession as a reference point for her book character. Opinion | Shang-Chi is the hero movie theaters needed

Never mind the fact that the activity one engages in in a theater (namely, sitting quietly among other people, all of whom are facing the same direction and many of whom are masked the whole time) is not conducive to the spread of the disease, that theaters themselves (because of their high ceilings, recent upgrades to air filters, and the fact that most auditoriums in a multiplex have a dedicated air conditioning unit) are actually quite safe spaces, and that vaccination virtually guarantees you won’t be hospitalized if you do happen to catch it: People remain concerned.

Aryan Khan drug case: Is the NCB trivialising drugs menace in the country or politicising it?

The suspicion gathered momentum when Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik held a press conference in Mumbai on Wednesday and alleged that a BJP leader, Manish Bhanushali, and a private detective had boarded the ship with NCB officials. When the duo posted a selfie with Aryan Khan, NCB hastily issued a press statement saying the men in the photograph were not NCB officials. Once they were identified as BJP workers, the NCB claimed they were independent witnesses taken by the raiding party.

The NCP leader caused even more flutter by claiming that there was a buzz in Mumbai over the past several weeks that central agencies would be targeting the Bollywood actor. While Shah Rukh Khan, unlike a large number of other Bollywood actors and directors, has not gone overboard posting selfies with BJP leaders or wishing them on their birthday, he has also been conspicuous by his absence at events attended by the senior functionaries of BJP and RSS.

The NCB, which had gone after junior actor Rhea Chakraborty, the former girlfriend of actor Sushant Singh Rajput who committed suicide, for allegedly procuring drugs for Rajput, appears to have spent enormous time and effort since then to bust the drug racket in Mumbai. But for its endeavours, it does not seem to have succeeded in choking the supply of drugs or in identifying the real big bosses controlling the supply. On the contrary it seems to have concentrated on headline grabbing raids of high profile parties and going after the consumers. The relatively small recoveries it has made also puts a question mark on its performance.

It is as yet unknown how many tip offs the BJP leaders in Mumbai have actually given to the NCB till now. What is the basis of their tips and have they or their background been investigated?

Scream’s First Trailer Reminds Us Why We Love to Fear Ghostface

The phone is ringing, and horror-movie nostalgia’s on the line—bringing with it some favorite characters we haven’t seen in a decade, plus some new blood, too. Here’s the first trailer for Scream 5, simply titled: Scream.

While we surely wish we could see the new Scream movie this Halloween, it’s not arriving until January, so we’ll have to content ourselves with the existing quartet (yes, even Scream 4—it’s much better than you remember it being!) and this delightfully terrifying new trailer for Matt Bettinelli-Olpen and Tyler Gillet’s reboot-relaunch of the late, great Wes Craven’s wonderfully self-aware slasher series.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-director Gillet explained that keeping the killer’s (or killers’, since we know how sneaky the Scream movies can be about stuff like that) identity a secret was priority number one, even on set. “We were really careful to protect the big reveal of the movie,” he said. “We went as far as to withhold those moments in the script from the actors. We wanted everybody involved, to the degree that we could, to be a part of the whodunit. Obviously, you get to a point in the shoot where you have to let the cat out of the bag, but we went pretty far into prep and into production with a surprising amount of secrecy maintained.”

Scream—which, yes, is technically Scream 5, but it’s just titled Scream the way David Gordon Green’s Halloween was just Halloween—stars series OGs Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott), Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers), and David Arquette (Dewey Riley), along with Marley Shelton (who played a cop in Scream 4). New faces include Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sonia Ammar, Jack Quaid, and Melissa Barrera. Original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson is also aboard as an executive producer, and it’ll be out January 14.

2021 Disney Movies Committed to Theaters as New Release Dates Reach Into 2024

After the near $100 million opening of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the Walt Disney Company just made a major statement about the future of its films. First, all of the company’s remaining 2021 releases, including Eternals and The King’s Man, will play only in theaters for 45 days. In addition, the company just dated a bunch of future films all the way into 2024.

The biggest piece of that latter bit of news is that the 2024 calendar just added four new Marvel movies, scheduled for release February 16, May 3, July 26, and November 8, 2024. They’ll come after four Marvel movies across 2022 and a whopping five in 2023. Beyond that, Guillermo del Toro’s latest, Nightmare Alley, was pushed a few weeks from December 3 to December 17; the previously undated Bob’s Burgers movie will now be out May 27, 2022; and the live-action version of The Little Mermaid will swim into theaters May 26, 2023.

Both moves are strong indications just how bullish Disney is on the theatrical experience. And why shouldn’t it be? After releasing many of its big 2021 films like Black Widow and Jungle Cruise both in theaters and on Disney+, the last two major releases—Free Guy and Shang-Chi—were exclusively in theaters and both were major hits. So the remaining films this year being exclusive to theaters for 45 days (with the notable exception of the animated film Encanto, which will be exclusive for only 30 days) makes perfect sense, for the company at least. It might make less sense to people still worried about the global covid-19 pandemic but with the numbers Shang-Chi put up, Disney seems content with at least that potential.

It’s also always worth checking if Disney’s schedule still has Avatar 2 hitting theaters in December 2022, which it does. Star Wars will still return to theaters in December 2023 with Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, followed by the franchises flipping that month into 2028: Avatar 3 in December 2024, a new Star Wars in December 2025, then Avatar, Star Wars, Avatar.

Ground shifting in Uttar Pradesh as people start questioning Maharaj’s record in office

BJP won the last election on the promise of putting an end to the alleged ‘Jungle Raj’ prevailing then, to put an end to perceived Muslim appeasement and on the promise of Ram Temple. The novelty of Ram Temple at Ayodhya, construction work in Varanasi and even the relentless communal campaign—ShamshanKabristan/Diwali-Eid/ Abbajaan— have lost some of their sharpness, if not their appeal.

Not surprisingly, at every public meeting these days Yogi Adityanath resorts to outright lies. He claims before he became chief minister, the state had not been able to celebrate Janmashtami or hold Durga Puja. This is what he had accused Mamata Banerjee during the election campaign in West Bengal. And this is what he now accuses Akhilesh Yadav, his predecessor, namely of appeasing the Muslims. More on the same lines can safely be expected in the next few months before the election.

BJP’s main plank this time is again restoration of ‘Sanatan Dharma’ in Uttar Pradesh. Hindu temples and mutts, big and small, have been showered with grants and money. The bulk of the state tourism department’s budget (Rs 272 crore in 2015-16 and Rs 1,000 crore this year) have been spent on development of Sanatan Sanskriti and on ostensibly developing the Ramayana Circuit, Braj Circuit, Buddhist Circuit, a spiritual circuit and finally the heritage circuit.

Tourism Minister Neelkanth Tewari points out that since 2017, Deepotsav festival is being organised at Ayodhya during Diwali and Dev Diwali at Varanasi, Rangotsav and Krishnotsav at Mathura and so on. Seven lakh lamps lighting the river banks for a few hours and actors playing characters from the Ramayana descending in helicopters have restored Sanatan Dharma, the minister believes.

Every temple trust, mutts and ashrams in the state have benefitted from Yogi Raj. The mahants move around in fancy cars costing above one crore rupees. Acharya Narendra Giri, president of the Akhara Parishad who allegedly committed suicide last month, was believed to own a fleet of 20 or more luxury cars. Most of these trusts control commercial property and educational institutions. The chief minister’s own mutt is a mini-empire in Gorakhpur. They own large plots of land, employ a large number of people and give shelter to a large number of criminals.

While property disputes in these mutts are said to have led to the killing of 42 ‘saints’ in the last four years, few, if any, of the cases have been solved. Crime in these mutts is fairly common, concedes a retired police officer. “This is no secret that many mutts are a den of criminals, who are utilized by mahants to silence their opponents,” he adds.

There is also little doubt that Uttar Pradesh received more central funds during the last five years. Samajwadi Party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary concedes that the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP Government had received Rs. 17,000 crore in 2012-13 and Rs. 22,000 crore in 2013-14 by way of central assistance.

But while the SP claims that central assistance dried up during the last two years of Akhilesh Yadav’s term, BJP claims there was no discrimination. Central assistance to UP rose substantially to Rs. 32,000 crore in 2014-15, it claims. Ever since the assembly election in 2017 when BJP stormed to power in the state, central assistance has ranged from Rs. 40,000 crore to Rs. 57,000 crore in 2020-21.

While other states, especially the opposition ruled states, have been complaining of a shortage of funds, UP seems to have been lucky with no dearth of funds. But whether funds have been used well is a different question altogether.

“This government does not have its own policies. It has only implemented central schemes. Uttar Pradesh bagged the top position in the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and the Ujjwala Yojana. But the Yogi government does not have any project which it can call its own,” quips Dr Manoj Sharma, an economist in Lucknow.

BJP also knows that all is not well on the ground. The party suffered a humiliating defeat in panchayat elections even in its strongholds of Varanasi, the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ayodhya and Mathura. BJP-backed nominees could win only 750 of the total 3,050 Zila Panchayat seats.

The results sent shock waves through the RSS and the BJP. RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale rushed to Lucknow. BJP national general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santhosh visited the state several times on damage control missions. Yogi, whom even bureaucrats address as ‘Maharaj’, has put off many because of his temper tantrums. Internal bickering in the ministry and within the BJP is no secret. Even BJP MLAs have accused him of being a casteist and favouring Thakurs. Some have called him anti-Brahmin and anti-Backward.

It was to hastily correct the caste balance that Ajay Mishra Teni was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers in February this year. Maharaj himself carried out a ministerial expansion by inducting a Brahmin, three Backwards and three Dalits in the ministry.

But will this be enough? Or is the bell tolling for the Maharaj?

Knives will be out for him if BJP barely manages a majority. Maharaj should be a worried man.

Mahesh Manjrekar announced his next film on Nathuram Godse on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary

How does the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) turn characters like Savarkar, who propagated the two-nation theory that was picked up by Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse into heroes? Incessant propaganda is the key to its plans.

RSS, say the Mumbai grapevine, is now helping fund Mahesh Manjrekar, known for a series of flop biopics, to make a film on Godse. The project, to add insult to injury, was announced on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2 this month.

Now Manjrekar cannot be faulted for accepting the assignment. He had earlier made a film Vaastav loosely based on the life of gangster Chhota Rajan, and paid for by the gangster’s brother, who was acknowledged in credits. The lead role was ironically played by Sanjay Dutt, who spent years in jail on the charge of receiving firearms from Rajan’s rival gang headed by Dawood Ibrahim.

Manjrekar must also be looking forward to the future because RSS plans to fund a lot of other films and TV serials on what it describes as lesser-known heroes of the freedom struggle. Since it has no freedom fighters in its own ranks and collaborated with the British to prevent India’s independence, it is not known whether it will pick up some freedom fighters from Congress and Communist ranks (like Bhagat Singh, for example, who it has been trying to appropriate for years without much success) or pass off K.B Hegdewar and M.S. Golwalkar as freedom fighters– after all, they did fight very hard to prevent emergence of an egalitarian society.

In the strongest sign yet that life is left in movie theaters, “F9” sped to a box office take of $70 million in its first weekend, the biggest opening for a film since the pandemic began, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The ninth installment in the “Fast Furious” franchise, starring franchise regulars Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, opened only in theaters and had the widest release of any movie since the start of the coronavirus crisis.

The domestic total for Universal Pictures’ “F9″ topped the previous pandemic-best of $48.4 million for ” A Quiet Place Part II ” four weeks ago. It was the biggest opening of any film since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in December 2019.

“We couldn’t be more gratified to see that the audience embraced the ‘Fast’ family and came out to see ‘F9’ in tremendous numbers,” said Jim Orr, head of distribution for Universal. “The debut this weekend has really ignited the domestic box office and set it on a tremendous path for the rest of the year.”

“A Quiet Place Part II” came in a very distant second with $6.2 million. But it has now earned $136.4 million since its release. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” brought in $4.88 million in the third spot.

HARRISON FORD INJURES SHOULDER ON SET OF ‘INDIANA JONES 5,’ PRODUCTION EXPECTED TO CONTINUE

” F9,” whose release was delayed several times, looks to have landed on just the right weekend to open in North America. It seemed to be a fitting film for the industry moment, with young audiences eager to be in theaters for a movie that emphasizes a loud, action-packed, immersive experience.

“It’s the perfect intersection of growing consumer confidence and vaccinations in North America, with movies that have already been released creating momentum,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore. “I don’t think you could have imagined a better scenario for the industry, with a few speed bumps in there. With ‘Furious 9’ being really the first summer Blockbuster in two years.”

“F9” debuted internationally on May 19, and has now grossed more than $400 million globally.

Universal eschewed the hybrid approach of combining theatrical and streaming releases, as Disney did earlier in the year with “Cruella” and Warner Bros. did with “Godzilla vs. Kong.”

It also came after most major theater chains have significantly loosened restrictions on capacity and masking.

The trends suggest that Hollywood might have something resembling a regular summer movie season, albeit one that starts months late and won’t be setting any industry records.

Releases in the coming weeks include Disney and Marvel’s “Black Widow” and Warner Bros.’ “The Suicide Squad.” Studios are using a variety of hybrid release plans. While the time movies spend between theaters and streaming has shrunk, probably permanently, there is an increasing emphasis back on the big screen.

“It’s a delayed start to a summer that’s been a long time coming. To have late June be ostensibly the start of summer is unusual, but better late than never,” Dergarabedian said. “A big Fourth of July weekend is coming up, with virtually every genre represented, and a week later we have ‘Black Widow,’ so we’re on the road to recovery.”

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.
