The occamy, a vibrant teal feathered serpent. The demiguise, a shaggy gray monkey lookalike with owlish eyes. And the niffler, a long-snouted mole impersonator.

These magical beasts live famously in Harry Potter’s wizarding world, but they can still teach us a thing or two about our own incredible creatures — especially the threatened and endangered ones.

London’s Natural History Museum is delivering the very real message of wildlife conservation in a new exhibit that head curator Lorraine Cornish describes as the institution’s best and most ambitious.

“It’s a bit unusual for us,” Cornish told The Post. “It’s really a creative and interesting way of messaging that people and the planet can thrive together.”

The show’s Dec. 9 opening has been a long time coming — two years of planning and a seven-month delay after the coronavirus pushed back a May opening.

Now, though, “Fantastic Beasts: The Wonders of Nature” — a nod to the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” textbook by Newt Scamander from J.K. Rowling’s world of Potter — is ready except for final touches.

Visitors will be pulled through time — from hundreds of years ago to modern times.

Ancient drawings of dragons, unicorns and mermaids show how the human imagination has always morphed bits and pieces of real creatures into make-believe ones. Dinosaurs might be the underpinning for dragons, for example, or manatees for mermaids.

“These creatures grew out of stories passed down about strange or frightening encounters with real animals,” Cornish said.

Magizoologist Scamander, who is both wizard and magical-creature researcher, and the museum’s scientists travel to faraway places seeking out the rarest of creatures, imagined and real.

Then, they point out parallels. The demiguise can vanish, the cuttlefish camouflages itself from enemies. The occamy can shrink enough to hide in a teapot, pufferfish can inflate themselves several times over.

And the storybook beings even play a role in helping visitors understand the importance of protecting all creatures in the natural world.

Just like how Scamander tries to save the last pair of graphorns in “Fantastic Beasts” — the rhino-looking creature has two golden horns that repel spells — researchers are working to save New Zealand’s flightless Kakapo. And they’re succeeding.

“The story of the Kakapo bird is inspiring, filled with hope,” Cornish told The Post.

Roughly 100 of the museum’s 80 million specimens will be mingled with props from the “Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” films, distributed by Warner Bros. The movie company and the BBC are the museum’s partners for the exhibit.

The show wraps up in the summer, then starts a five-year international tour. Cornish wouldn’t comment on whether New York City will be a stop, but she smiled — and then on to talk about the exhibit’s goal.

“We want to change the way we treat the world.”

Manchester City got their first win of the season with a 5-0 thumping of newly-promoted Norwich and Liverpool made it two from two with victory over Burnley.

Brighton beat Watford 2-0 to maintain their 100% start, as did Tottenham with a 1-0 win at Wolves and Chelsea with their 2-0 success away to Arsenal.

Manchester United drew 1-1 at Southampton, while a Danny Ings stunner helped Aston Villa beat Newcastle 2-0.

Goalkeeper: David Raya (Brentford)

David Raya: There was no question about it. The moment the ball left James McArthur’s right foot it was destined for the back of the net and would have given Crystal Palace their first win of the season. Instead Raya produced what can only be described as a world-class save to keep the game goalless.

Three teams may have won promotion, but Brentford seem, at least on current form, to be the more likely to survive. Although I’m still not totally convinced.

At the moment the west London club are playing on euphoria, but that alone will not save them. They will need goals and lots of them. So far they have only played a dismal Arsenal and a very ordinary Palace side.

Did you know? Raya has kept a clean sheet in eight of his last 10 league games for Brentford (excluding play-offs).

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Shane Duffy (Brighton), Reece James (Chelsea)

Trent Alexander-Arnold: I gave a moment’s thought to giving this spot to Tino Livramento for his Southampton home debut against Manchester United, but that would have been sentimental.

The 18-year-old’s performance was notable, but compared to that of Alexander-Arnold against Burnley, I really had little choice.

The Liverpool and England international didn’t just spray the ball around Anfield with extraordinary precision, but produced a simply exquisite ball for Sadio Mane to score Liverpool’s second goal. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a full-back strike a ball so cleanly with both feet.

Did you know? Alexander-Arnold has provided nine assists for Mane in the Premier League, four more than he has for any other Liverpool player.

Cesar Azpilicueta: Chelsea are not Champions League winners by accident. Their performance against Arsenal was a gentle reminder to all concerned they have no intention of surrendering that trophy and have one eye firmly fixed on the Premier League as well.

In order to do that you need a leader and captain who is capable of keeping the players focused on the prize and Azpilicueta is that man. The Spaniard was outstanding against the Gunners – as he was for the best part of last season.

The greater the responsibility he has, the better he seems to play. Chelsea have arguably the best squad in the league and their mindset is very clear. They now want to be the best team.

Did you know? Azpilicueta made three tackles, one block and completed 93% of his passes against Arsenal.

Shane Duffy: I was surprised to see him leave Brighton for Celtic on loan last season and even more surprised to see him return. Duffy reunites with Lewis Dunk in a defence in which they have forged a formidable partnership over the years.

Brighton have won both their opening fixtures and look a side who are improving in their second season under Graham Potter, who has become an expert at saying very little.

Did you know? Among central defenders, only Dunk and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk (both 10) have scored more Premier League goals than Duffy (7) since the start of the 2018-19 campaign.

Reece James: It was just as well Chelsea’s game at Arsenal wasn’t a heavyweight boxing contest. If it were, the referee would have stopped it – 2-0 flattered Arsenal. It could and should have been five.

Arsenal were taking so much punishment from Chelsea at one stage, I thought they did extremely well to finish without being completely embarrassed. James provided an assist for Romelu Lukaku’s goal and scored the second himself.

On this performance it’s quite inconceivable not to expect the Blues to be challenging for the title this season. As for James, this lad is no longer a player to make up the numbers for Chelsea or England.

Did you know? James is only the second Chelsea player to score and assist away from home against Arsenal in the Premier League, after Juan Mata in September 2012.

Midfielders: Yves Bissouma (Brighton), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Demarai Gray (Everton)

Yves Bissouma: I’ve had my eye on him for some time now and with every touch of the ball he seems to get better. I dare say he might have made my team of the week on more occasions had he been playing for a more fashionable side.

Brighton played some good football and so did Watford. However, the best player on the pitch was without doubt Bissouma. He’s 24, box to box, makes excellent interceptions and can see a pass.

He came to Brighton for an undisclosed fee which normally means he cost buttons. If he’s not worth upwards of £25m in the current market, I’ll eat my hat. Brighton will do well to hold on to him.

Did you know? No Brighton player registered more tackles (5) or interceptions (5) against Watford than Bissouma.

Jordan Henderson: Have Liverpool lost their mind? They have allowed Georginio Wijnaldum to leave Anfield and surely they can’t be contemplating the same thing happening with Henderson.

The Liverpool captain was back in the side against Burnley and dictating play in the middle of the park like Andre Previn used to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra. Henderson was at his commanding best.

As for Jurgen Klopp complaining about the game going back 10-15 years and calling on the Premier League to protect players by rethinking the rule changes, is he serious? The concern for the health and safety of players has never been higher.

Did you know? Henderson attempted (73) and completed (66) more passes against Burnley than any other Liverpool player.

Dele Alli: This was a game Spurs were lucky to win, but win it they did. The difference between the two sides was very simple. Alli can finish and Adama Traore can’t.

The Wolves winger has it all. Electric pace, tremendous power and, on occasions a touch of skill, but the most difficult thing to do on a football pitch is to put the ball in the net. Alli stepped up to score his first league goal in 17 months from the penalty spot, which takes courage and confidence.

This is the second consecutive week that Alli has started and finished a game for Spurs. I wonder if Nuno Espirito Santo has done what Jose Mourinho failed to achieve and found the player again? It normally works when you treat people nicely.

Did you know? Alli’s previous league goal was against Burnley in March 2020.

Demarai Gray: Leeds got what they deserved in the opening exchanges against Everton. I’m no fan of VAR, but referee Darren England’s use of the replay check, for the first goal when in doubt, was the right thing to do.

How Liam Cooper had the nerve to question his subsequent booking, never mind the penalty he gave away for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s shirt practically off his back, beggars belief.

As for Everton, I think they are very lucky to have got Rafa Benitez so soon as manager after losing Carlo Ancelotti. The Spaniard has brought in winger Gray, who looked electric against Leeds and is a real talent.

Did you know? Gray scored his first Premier League goal for Everton, becoming the 34th different player to score both for and against the Toffees in the competition.

Forwards: Gabriel Jesus (Man City), Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea)

Gabriel Jesus: Playing against Manchester City having just lost to Spurs must be like being cornered by a tiger that hasn’t eaten for three days. That was the prospect facing Norwich who, at the moment, look like they are in a league they have no business being in.

Everyone seemed to accept that Gabriel Jesus was man of the match and I am inclined to agree. However, I cannot accept a coach, however good he might be, playing a world-class striker on the right of a three-man attack providing assists when he is perfectly capable of scoring goals himself.

If Jesus knows what’s good for him he should tell City to either buy Harry Kane and let me play alongside him so we can forge a partnership – or make me your main man. Short of that, I’m off.

Did you know? Jesus provided two assists in a single Premier League game for only the second time in his career, also doing so against Brighton in July 2020.

Romelu Lukaku: He has worked extremely hard for his success. Lukaku played for West Brom, Everton, Manchester United, Inter Milan and has now returned to Chelsea where it all started. The Belgium international has taken an awful lot of flak along the way.

However, what I see at this stage of his career is another Didier Drogba. I never thought I would be saying that when he was playing for United, but the player’s touch with his back to goal is better, and his all-round football contribution is much improved.

Arsenal couldn’t handle him, but if I were them I wouldn’t worry about that too much. Most other teams in the Premier League are going to have the same problem this season up against Lukaku.

Did you know? Lukaku has now scored his 114th Premier League goal, overtaking Ian Wright to become the competition’s 20th highest-scoring player. Lukaku has also become the eighth non-Englishman to score 50+ goals both home and away in the competition.

The Crooks of the Matter

It would appear Jurgen Klopp and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are up in arms about the rule changes this season which allow referees a certain leeway in their decision making. Officials have been encouraged to play on when physical contact occurs between players but is not necessarily a foul. Meanwhile, both managers believe the game is now in danger of becoming too physical.

When I saw the comments I thought it was a misprint. The game becoming too physical? The game is in danger of becoming hilarious.

Regular readers will know how frustrated I became about players who went to ground at the slightest touch. Most of which came about because of the false assumption that if contact was made in the first instance, then a foul had been committed.

This was not always true. Football has always been a contact sport. While no-one wants to see injuries, unfortunately it is an occupational hazard and sometimes unavoidable. Players must have the ability to compete fairly and honestly and not be penalised for merely competing, otherwise the contest becomes sanitised and sterile.

Football, like any elite sport, must be competitive and, on the rare occasions, the player may have to put his body on the line.

English actor Tom Felton, known for playing Draco Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” film series, has started rewatching the movies for the first time in about 20 years.

On Monday, he watched the first 11 minutes and 11 seconds of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001) while livestreaming on Instagram so fans could see his reactions. He set out to watch another 11 minutes of it on Wednesday, but he lost track of time and ended up watching the next 22 minutes, instead. 

Even though he’s only about 30 minutes into “Sorcerer’s Stone,” Felton has already let fans in on behind-the-scenes secrets about the film while providing colorful commentary.

Felton seemed to get a little choked up when the iconic John Williams score kicked in during the opening scene, and his visible waves of emotion didn’t stop there. 

Upon seeing his 11-year-old costar’s debut as Harry Potter, Felton said, “Look at him! [Daniel] Radcliffe looks about 5,” and had to tell himself to “keep it together” as he started tearing up.

In between sharing tidbits about the set and impersonating Hagrid’s accent, he said the movie is “not bad” for anyone who hasn’t seen it before. 

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen this — I’ve never seen this footage, since the premiere. I have no idea what’s going on, it’s fantastic,” he said during the stream. “I’m watching it for the first time really.”

He also added, “I think it works, right? We’re all watching the same thing, and I’m just sort of tearing up really rather than giving you commentary, but it’ll get better.”

He also shared some personal details and stories from his experience on set

When he first saw Professor McGonagall on screen, Felton sighed and said, “She’s my hero.” It’s unclear if he meant the character or the actor who plays her, Dame Maggie Smith.

During his second video on Wednesday, the actor also shared that he got to keep one of the envelopes from the scene where the owls bombard the Dursley house while trying to deliver Harry his Hogwarts letter. 

Felton has yet to see his own character, Draco Malfoy, on screen, but he should be encountering him soon. The character’s first scene is on the Hogwarts Express, and the actor left off at the scene on Platform 9 3/4.

The actor has previously said he was waiting for a ‘sacred day’ to rewatch the films

In 2018, Felton told People that he hasn’t rewatched any of the “Harry Potter” films since they premiered and that he was saving them “for a sacred day.”

“I have visions of doing that with my two kids, when I’m a little bit older,” he told the publication. 

Luckily for fans, he decided to share the special moment with them on Instagram instead.

Next month, Manhattan will see the opening of Harry Potter New York, a flagship store and immersive experience that will “house the largest collection of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts products in the world from pocket money items to rare collectibles.” The store will feature over 20,00 square feet of shopping, immersive activities, a butterbeer bar, and all sorts of Instagram-friendly photo ops, as well as props from the film series.

The store is the latest addition to Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling’s ever-growing empire, which includes multiple theme parks, studio tours, and enough merch to fill the Room of Requirement. But while plenty of Potterheads will still be hitting up the store faster than you can say “Accio credit cards!” many more remain dismayed by Rowling’s blatant transphobia. Countless former fans have sworn off everything Rowling-related, for that extremely good reason.

This leaves some Wizarding World fans at a loss, as they struggle to rationalize separating the art from the transphobic artist. In this case, it’s difficult to do so. And clearly, Rowling and her sprawling franchise aren’t going anywhere. There are still 3 more Fantastic Beasts films in the pipeline and potential TV shows, as well as innumerable merchandising opportunities to be mined for cash. It also leaves Warner Bros. and other companies affiliated with the brand in the position of distancing themselves from Rowling while promoting wares that still line her pockets.

Take for example, PlayStation 5’s Hogwarts Legacy, an RPG which Warner Bros. Games is set to release in 2022. On the game’s FAQ page it says, “J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game, however, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World.” The FAQ adds that Hogwarts Legacy “is not a new story from J.K. Rowling,” as if that assuages anyone concerned with giving more money to a noted and proud TERF.

Does Rowling’s level of involvement matter when her permission is needed to create anything within the Wizarding World? When she is paid a licensing fee or percentage of the profits of everything the brand touches? Is there a way to indulge in this once-beloved fandom without putting dollars in Rowling’s pockets?

Harry Potter New York is another in the endless Pottermania cash grab fueled by the property’s enduring popularity and name recognition, and a studio looking to maximize their profits. It’s evident in the theme parks, where there are a dozen gift shops surrounding 2-3 actual rides. And look, we love a theme park experience, and we love fandoms. But with Rowling’s boastful transphobia, it becomes impossible to enjoy all this content in the same way.

Jezebel’s Ashley Reese said it best when she laid out what exactly it is we want from Rowling:

“Besides, the loudest fans (in other words, me and those whose brains have been addled by years of online fandom) have made it clear what they actually want out of the Harry Potter franchise at this point (in no particular order):

– A Marauders-era TV prequel
– JK Rowling to denounce her transphobia
– A gritty goddamn Marauders-era TV prequel set from the 1970s to early 1980s Jesus fucking Christ we’ve wanted this since, like, 2006. When will HBO hire me as a consultant?

Since this is unlikely to happen anytime soon, I think I’ll just stick to fanfiction. Thanks, but no thanks, Warner Brothers.”

Outside of fanfiction and buying books secondhand, are there other ways to enjoy Potterdom guilt-free? After all, plenty of childhood classics are written by problematic authors (hello Roald Dahl). Or should we all just resign ourselves to bidding the Wizarding World goodbye and investing our fan energy into another fantasy world?

Not sure what trans and non-binary folks need to hear this, but continuing to enjoy Harry Potter–in spite of Rowling’s awfulness–is not only okay but healthy. If we want, we’re allowed to hold on to the goodness and fandom of that and make it our own. That’s entirely valid.

As a mother, I have long looked forward to reading the books to my kids. But I think I’ll probably be shifting bedtime stories to the Percy Jackson series, or to an author who didn’t torch their entire legacy. As much as I love the world of Harry Potter, Rowling’s transphobia has tattooed a Dark Mark on the franchise that won’t easily be removed.

Since 2010, Harry Potter has been a constant wellspring of content for themed entertainment.

It wasn’t long after Universal welcomed a record-breaking number of guests to the Wizarding World with lines that last nearly all day that Warner Bros. opened their own Potter-anchored attraction in London. The company’s Hollywood studio tour quickly followed suit with its own Potter section.

At the same time, Universal continued to revolutionize the themed entertainment industry with the addition of the well-hidden Diagon Alley and Wizarding World additions to its Hollywood and Japan resorts.

The two studio companies worked together on each of these additions, ensuring they were as accurate as possible to the movie versions of the stories. Warner Bros. continued to seek ways to replicate the success it saw in London by purchasing the Platform 9 3/4 K1ng’s Cross stores and expanding into new markets with Potter experiences. The three stores in London brought in more than $2 million in revenue per month in 2019.

Even as some of the shine has been taken off of author J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter fandom will not be stopped. The company  recently opened the world’s largest Potter store in New York City.

Stretching across three levels, the Harry Potter New York store fills more than 20,000 square feet with the latest in Wizarding World merchandise. Fifteen different themed areas touch on all the most popular scenes from the films. The House of MinaLima, a micro shop dedicated to the graphic designers made famous for their work in the Potter films, offers stylish posters and print wares that look straight out of a museum. An entire café dedicated to butterbeer offers the drink in draft and bottled versions, with the bottled versions coming in a custom-designed label made just for this store.

But despite its many photo opportunities, Warner Bros. has maintained that this is a retail store and not an attraction. Now they’re blurring that line even more with the addition of two Harry Potter-themed VR experiences. One experience allows guests to ride on a broomstick, while the other offers an escape room-style romp through the Wizarding World’s most iconic locales.

There have been rumors of a Potter broomstick VR experience in the works for Universal Parks for years, with it now expected to come as a future phase to Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida. The addition of these new experiences at the New York Potter store reportedly came as a surprise to Universal. In a recent post on his Theme Park University site, Josh Young laid out how Warner Bros. can open this new experience despite likely consulting Universal on a nearly identical concept.

“One could argue that the Harry Potter New York store goes far beyond just a merchandise location. It’s a Harry Potter ‘experience.’ Therefore, it doesn’t step on the toes of anything Universal has exclusivity over. Thus, does a virtual reality broom ‘experience’ create a conflict of interest? Depends on who you ask. Is it technically a ride? Not really since you don’t actually go anywhere,” explains Young. “Thus, the New York Harry Potter virtual reality ‘experience’ sits in this gray area that allows it to even exist.”

To dive deeper into what this new attraction experience means for Universal, Josh Young recently sat down with the Orlando Weekly.

Young believes that Warner Bros. is operating in a gray area with its new experience.

“Universal Parks have an exclusivity on Harry Potter “attractions” within the United States. If you’re the only one who has access to a certain IP, it’s seen as more valuable. If Harry Potter attractions were in every mall in America, there would be far less incentive to visit Universal Orlando,” he said. “However, the WB store in NY is offering an “experience,” and they aren’t calling it an attraction. From my understanding, this simple change of nomenclature is the loophole which will allow both Harry Potter VRs to operate.”

That loophole isn’t that different from the one Disney used to introduce Marvel characters to its Orlando resort by not acknowledging their connection to the Marvel universe. Just as Universal still benefits from the Marvel contract and therefore is unwilling to part with the intellectual properties, Young points to the success of the Wizarding World lands at Universal parks as a reason why the company will try to maintain a working relationship with Warner Bros. despite this new Warner Bros. experience.

Plus, even though the two concepts are similar, Young thinks Universal will have the advantage of a larger budget for this theme park experience.

“While both are virtual reality rides on broomsticks, they were both made simultaneously by two completely different companies. The quality of the headset, the immersive effects, and even the storyline are somewhat different,” he said.

But Young warns that Universal upcoming VR experience isn’t that different than the Twilight motorcycle experience that Lionsgate opened at its indoor theme park in China in 2019. A copy of that theme park is now strongly rumored for Orlando, with supposed internal documents related to it leaking last fall.

After this leak, Universal seems to have shifted the plans for their Potter VR experience from Epic Universe back to Universal Studios Florida, with it now likely opening ahead of the mid-decade opening of Epic Universe. This would have allowed the company to open its VR experience first. Now, no matter when Universal opts to open its rumored VR experience, it will inevitably be compared to the New York one.

Being part of the “Harry Potter” film franchise wasn’t all broomsticks and potions.

Rupert Grint, who played Harry’s best pal Ron Weasley, confessed that it sometimes felt “suffocating” to film eight movies back to back.

“There was a time where it felt quite suffocating, because it was heavy going, because it was every day for 10 years in the end,” Grint, who grew up on screen from 2001 to 2011, said on the “Armchair Expert” podcast. “It was a great experience. Such a nice kind of family atmosphere … But sometimes it definitely felt like, ‘I want to do something else. See what else is out there.’”

When the now-32-year-old began filming, only four books had been published and just two movies were planned. The global success of the films scuttled those plans and he soon realized that he would be spending years playing the same part.

“It just never ended,” Grint said. “Every year, we came back. And it was kind of like Groundhog Day because it was the same sets. It was the same people. But it was great. I loved it.”

He also revealed to only having seen each movie once, except the first, which he recently watched for a second time.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Swimmers were forced out of the water at Rockaway Beach again Thursday afternoon after there were multiple shark sightings.

All beaches within six blocks of 131st Street were closed to swimming.

Beach-goers are also being urged to stay out of the water at Rockaway Beach due to inadequate water quality.

There was another sighting off Long Island at Lido Beach on Thursday morning.

Hempstead officials say lifeguards spotted the shark while they were training around 10:45 a.m.

Swimmers were forced out of the water but were later allowed back in — knee-deep only — while extra patrols kept an eye on the ocean.

“There was a fin in the area. The shark looked about six to seven feet. It was circling. It was in the sandbar. It was about 25 yards off,” lifeguard Frank Falcone said.

“Our lifeguards are trained in identification of the sharks. We have all the precautions necessary,” Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin said.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says this is the 20th confirmed sighting in the county this summer. She says that’s three more than the same time last year.

Henry caused a minor stir when he publicly condemned then Minister for Magic, Archer Evermonde, who had forbidden the magical community to help Muggles waging the First World War. His outspokenness on the behalf of the Muggle community was also a strong contributing factor in the family’s exclusion from the ‘Sacred Twenty-Eight.'”
