Women Children’s Center transformed at Kaiser Permanente Roseville

Roseville, Calif. – The playroom at Kaiser Permanente Roseville’s Women Children’s Center has been completely transformed into a magical Harry Potter experience, to the delight of pediatric patients and their families, as well as physicians and staff.

Upon entering the space, young witches and wizards step onto Platform 9 3/4, then stroll through the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which includes a Potions classroom, Great Hall, and the Chamber of Secrets.

Kaiser Permanente Roseville Child Life Specialist Traci Aoki-Tan dreamed up the idea for converting the playroom into Hogwarts and recruited Harry Potter superfans among the pediatric staff to bring the idea to fruition.

“With so many other activities canceled over the past year and a half, we really needed something to bring joy to our patients, their families and each other,” said Aoki-Tan.

“I didn’t expect it to be this big, it was really creative! My favorite part was definitely the Great Hall,” said Austin Mitchell, a 13-year-old Roseville pediatric patient.

“It’s been a really tough year, and this really made me happy.”

Inspired Creativity

Aoki-Tan was joined by a core group of nurses, medical social work, carpenters, painters, and volunteers who helped bring this magical experience to pediatric patients.

The team spent countless hours over the past month sourcing and creating items to use in the room. Once word got out about their plans, physicians, staff, family, and friends began reaching out to lend items from their personal collection, such as wands, swords, and cloaks.

“It was really cool, I loved the decorations, especially Hedwig and the Sorting Hat,” said 17-year-old Ashley Tapparo, another Roseville pediatric patient. “I just want to say thank you to all the staff and nurses that put this together.”

The Harry Potter experience will be up until October 31. But the team is considering making this an annual tradition and hopes to be able to allow more visitors when COVID-19 restrictions are no longer in place.

“We all need a little magic right now,” says Aoki-Tan. “This experience helps each patient that goes through forget – even for moment – about being in the hospital, their illness and what is going on outside these hospital walls.”

Whether you’ve been a fan of the Wizarding World since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling was published in 1997 or are just starting to watch the films, Harry Potter enthusiasts can’t seem to get enough of this franchise. One of the latest designs to be introduced is based on Hogwarts’ neighboring town of Hogsmeade. The custom artwork shows off a snow-capped mountain range with a postcard-like banner saying, “Greetings from Hogsmeade.” On the sides of the cooler, you can see the main street of the town, lined by warmly lit shop windows. The second new design is of Hogsmeade’s premier candy shop, Honeydukes. Eagle-eyed fans will recognize the shop’s pink and blue diamond logo from the 2004 film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Along with the Honeydukes motif, the cooler showcases recognizable candies found in the shop like chocolate frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, sugar skulls, and rock candy. Both coolers can hold up to nine cans at a time and are built with eco-friendly insulation and the original Playmate side button to swivel open the top.

Even though coolers might not be the most popular items during the wintertime, they can be fun presents for people who love to plan ahead and go on outdoor adventures. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Pushes Up Broadway Return

As previously reported, the Tony- and Olivier-winning play will reopen in North America as one part instead of two.

The Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will reopen slightly earlier than originally announced, with the first post-shutdown performance now slated to begin at the Lyric Theatre November 12 (a Friday) instead of November 16 (Tuesday).

As reported last month, when the Broadway production (and all other North American engagements) resume or start their runs, the Tony- and Olivier-winning play will be presented in a new version, which condenses the show into a one-part performance. Playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany, who conceived the story with original series author J.K. Rowling, say they have been at work on the abridged version as theatres remained dark. Other stagings, including the original West End show, will return with both parts intact.

Casting for the Broadway run will be announced at a later date. Tickets are now on sale to the general public.

The Broadway producers who are bringing the show “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” back to San Francisco in 2022 are kicking off the Pottermania early with “Wizarding World Wednesdays” at the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square.

Each week, fans can show up in their Hogwarts house colors, lace up their skates, take a spin around the ice and enter for a chance to win special “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” prizes, including opening night tickets for the official Feb. 9 premiere at the Curran Theater.

A different Hogwarts house will be featured at 5:30 and 7 p.m. sessions each Wednesday. On Dec. 15 it will be Ravenclaw, followed by Slytherin on Dec. 22 and Gryffindor on Dec. 29. (Alas, Hufflepuff fans are skating as we write this on Dec. 8.)

Ice rink tickets, which include skate rental, are $19. They must be purchased in advance online at  unionsquareicerink.com.

Tracey Nicol-Lewis has the largest collection of “Harry Potter” memorabilia in the world. 

Nicol-Lewis, 47, from Mid Glamorgan, a county in Wales, U.K., was recognized by Guinness World Records in October for having both the largest “Harry Potter” collection and the largest collection of Wizarding World memorabilia. 

According to SWNS, Nicol-Lewis has 6,300 items related to “Harry Potter” or the other franchises within J.K. Rowling’s fictional world.

Those items – which include a collection of 47 wands, special edition books, LEGO sets, artwork and at least 127 action figures – take up three rooms in her house, SWNS reported. 

Her largest item, according to the news agency, is a five-foot-tall cardboard book display for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

Nicol-Lewis first watched “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in 2002 and quickly bought her first collectible, a chocolate frog, SWNS reported. 

By 2006, her collection had grown to 100 items.

Nicol-Lewis told SWNS that the world of “Harry Potter” helped her cope with the death of her first husband, Simon, who died in 2005. Before his death, he pre-ordered “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” for Nicol-Lewis and it arrived weeks after he died. 

Nicol-Lewis said it was the last gift she got from him. 

“That’s why I think the collection got so mad,” she said.

Aside from collecting “Harry Potter” memorabilia, Nicol-Lewis also enjoys “Harry Potter” cosplay and was even married to her second husband, Martin, in a “Harry Potter” themed wedding last year, according to SWNS. 

Her dress was red and gold – the “Harry Potter” Gryffindor house colors – and was decorated with Deathly Hallows symbols, SWNS reported. Her shoes were painted with Dobby the elf, one of the characters from the franchise.

Though Martin isn’t a “Harry Potter” fan like Nicol-Lewis, he suggested she try for a Guinness World Record for her collection. In April, when they submitted the collection, Nicol-Lewis had 5,284 items. Since then, she’s acquired at least 1,000 more, SWNS reported.

“I still can’t believe that I have much in my collection,” Nicol-Lewis said. “When it’s all around your room and you see it every day, it’s only when someone comes in and sees it and they’re like ‘oh that’s a lot!’”

However, she said she didn’t think her collection was big enough to get a world record. When she received the honor, she said she was “over the moon.”

Nicol-Lewis told SWNS that she hasn’t had her collection valued, but she thinks she spends about $132 (£100) on new memorabilia.

“I think ‘oh that’s it I won’t get anymore,’ and I go to the shop and something always falls in my basket,” she said. 

Nicol-Lewis said that looking at and rearranging her collection is her “happy place.”

“Everything…in my collection is just amazing, I love it,” she said. “They have memories attached to them as well because I can remember the bits from the films or the books.”

SINGAPORE: “Yer a wizard, Harry.”

No more iconic words of initiation have been spoken. They introduced readers to a vast world of magic, seen through the eyes of a then 11-year-old boy.

Those words were also the launch pad of seven novels, eight films, a play, and numerous spin-offs, video games and theme parks.

As the first Harry Potter film turns 20 this year, millennials will fondly reminisce about our journey through the years with The Boy Who Lived.

Whenever a new book arrived, we burrowed into it, excitedly discussed its events, and speculated what will happen next. The film adaptations sated our appetites while we waited.

Once a new book was announced, we badgered our parents to pre-order it. On the day it hit shelves, we waited in line with bated breaths.

Looking back at the analogue way we did all this, it’s interesting to think: If JK Rowling wrote and published the novels today, would they have had the same success as they did two decades ago? What about the films?

COMPELLING STORY, CHARACTERS AND SETTING

Harry Potter remains an incredibly lucrative multimedia franchise. It has raked in US$25 billion through book sales, box office earnings and more, beating out other fantasy series like The Lord Of The Rings or A Song Of Ice And Fire (including TV series Game Of Thrones).

Not many contemporary novels – let alone one targeted at children and young adults – have become a worldwide phenomenon like Harry Potter.

The wizarding world of Harry Potter is getting its magic back.

In the first official trailer for the retrospective special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, the beloved franchise’s star players Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint reunite for a journey through life-changing memories. The special premieres on HBO Max on Jan. 1 when the clock strikes midnight.

“The thing that scared me the most was the implication that the most meaningful thing was done,” Radcliffe recalls in the trailer. “And there’s something so joyous about seeing everyone, and be like, ‘It wasn’t though.’”

For the first time since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 brought the film series to a close in 2011, Return to Hogwarts reassembles not only the Gryffindor trio of Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger, but also makes room for the full cast of characters that carried the films forward. In the trailer, Helena Bonham Carter whips out a set of old prop teeth to really feel the memory and the stage is set for additional appearances from Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Tom Felton, and more.

The collection of actors recalls the early days of filming and the lasting impact of the eight-film series in the years since its conclusion. During a close sit-down in the trailer, Grint tells Watson: “It’s a very heartwarming thing ‘cause I’ve watched you grow up and I’ve seen kind of every stage of your life.”

She sums up the feeling simply: “When things get really dark and times are really hard, there’s something about Harry Potter that makes life richer.”

Also returning for the special filmmakers Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates as well as producer David Heyman, among others.

“There’s magic in the air here with this incredible cast, as they all return home to the original sets of Hogwarts, where they began 20 years ago,” executive producer Casey Patterson said in a statement. “The excitement is palpable as they prepare to take their fans on a very special and personal journey, through the making of these incredible films.”
