The Book Club: Harry Potter – Nightlife

Harry Potter books have had an extraordinary impact on popular culture. Fueled by her imagination and exceptional knowledge of literature from classical mythology to coming-of-age British school days, JK Rowling unleashed the first Harry Potter book on an unsuspecting world 25 years ago. Her 7-book series has spawned a $43 billion empire.

Indira Naidoo in The Book Club ponders through the pages of these classics with Ellen Cregan, host of the First Book Club podcast from arts and culture magazine kill Your Darlings and joined by Charlie Bray, Bookseller at Elizabeths Books Perth.

A college kid’s definitive ranking of the “Harry Potter” books

During Wildcat Wellness, I escaped the constraints of my dorm room and ventured back to the magical world of “Harry Potter” via a free trial of Kindle Unlimited.

My journey back into the pages of “Harry Potter” was magical and nostalgic, but challenged my impression of the series. It is inevitable that my perspective as a stressed-out college student would shift my view of a series of children’s books.

After deep thought and concentration, I present to you my new and definitive ranking of the “Harry Potter” books, from least favorite to favorite. Spoilers ahead.

7. “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”

This ranking likely comes as no surprise. “Chamber of Secrets” is the most forgettable “Harry Potter” book.

Despite its short length, the second entry of the series features one of its most extensive plots. More plot does not necessarily guarantee a better story, however, and “Chamber of Secrets” lacks characterization and emotion as a result.

It is by no means a bad book and I see why I thoroughly enjoyed it as a child, as it includes the escapist elements Harry Potter fans have come to expect. But the convoluted plot makes it an unenjoyable reread.

6. “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”

Like most penultimate entries in franchises, the sixth “Harry Potter” book exists to set up its much more engaging finale, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” Although it is intriguing to learn about Lord Voldemort’s past, “Half-Blood Prince” is essentially just exposition. Parts of this book that are not a chock-full of set-up are dedicated to awkward teen romance, which I personally did not enjoy.

“Half-Blood Prince” has enjoyable elements, one of which being Potter and Albus Dumbledore’s fleshed out relationship. J.K. Rowling’s sixth “Harry Potter” book is a solid entry, but it is unable to stand on its own.

5. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”

“Sorcerer’s Stone” is the original “Harry Potter” book. The entire Wizarding World franchise owes its existence to this fun and whimsical first entry.

Rowling’s introduction to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is impossible to dislike, due to the creative ideas employed throughout this book, drawing the audience into a world of magic.

As an adult, however, I found this book a tad unengaging. Having read “Sorcerer’s Stone” multiple times, I don’t feel the same emotions of awe and wonder I felt as a child. Despite my aging perspective, though, “Sorcerer’s Stone” still delivers a fantastical introduction to the “Harry Potter” series.

4. “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”

“Prisoner of Azkaban” is the first stepping stone the Harry Potter series takes to a more mature direction for its story and characters. The third “Harry Potter” installment significantly improves upon “Chamber of Secrets” by having a simpler plot and an increased focus on character relationships.

In “Prisoner of Azkaban,” Harry’s thoughts and fears are fleshed out, and throughout the book we feel his longing for his dead parents. Sirius Black and Remus Lupin’s introductions to the series connect to the book’s theme of nostalgia.

3. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”

“Deathly Hallows” is a perfect ending to the “Harry Potter” series. It’s personal, emotional and has the highest stakes of the series.

Most of the book takes place outside of Hogwarts, with Harry, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger on the move in search of horcruxes. This new dynamic creates an added tension which makes the eventual demise of Lord Voldemort even more satisfying.

“Deathly Hallows” fires on all cylinders to deliver a mature and satisfying conclusion to the “Harry Potter” books.

2. “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”

I’m not going to lie, this ranking is probably surprising — heck, it surprised even me. But “Order of the Phoenix” is one of the best Harry Potter books, even though it was my least favorite entry as a kid.

The fifth Harry Potter book is the first to completely embrace a mature tone, perhaps to keep pace with its aging audience. Throughout the book, Harry has to deal with a Wizarding World that has turned its back on him and refuses to believe Lord Voldemort has returned. This concept sets up one of the most engaging plots of the series.

“Order of the Phoenix” successfully changes the formula for what a “Harry Potter” book can be and presents its protagonist with mature, grown-up challenges.

1. “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”

The fourth “Harry Potter” book has and will always be my favorite.

“Goblet of Fire” is peak Harry Potter. It includes the fantastical elements we have come to love from the series and has the most interesting story of the series. This entry also deals directly with concepts of death and evil, setting a darker tone for the rest of the series.

Rowling’s fourth “Harry Potter” entry provides fun, maturity, and most importantly escapism, making it the best book of one of the best series of all time.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Is A Free-To-Play Collectible Card Game MMO Coming To Mobile This Year

Warner Bros. Games has revealed that Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, a mobile game already released in the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, is coming to the Americas, Europe, and Oceania territories this year.

This mobile NetEase-developed title, which Warner Bros. Games describes as a “free-to-play immersive collectible card game and massively multiplayer wizarding dueling game featuring a blend of strategy roleplay,” has been live in China since last September. It’s been received quite well there; it topped local App Stores as the number one game in revenue. So, if this sounds right up your alley and you live in the U.S., Europe, or Oceania, you might have yet another new Harry Potter game to play this year (assuming Hogwarts Legacy is released this year, too).

“Co-developed and co-published by Warner Bros. Games and NetEase Games, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened will launch globally later this year for iOS and Android as the latest title under Portkey Games, the label dedicated to creating new mobile and videogame experiences inspired by the Wizarding World that place the player at the center of their own adventure,” a press release reads.

In Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, you play as a Wizard or Witch of your own creation as you embark on a new wizarding world adventure. As you might expect, Warner Bros. Games says you’ll run into original Harry Potter characters and new faces alike. As you progress through the story, you’ll learn spells and charms that you cast in the form of cards. You’ll need to accumulate magical knowledge to master these spells and create unique strategies and card combinations to win duels. Like any school year at Hogwarts, expect challenging trials, duels against fellow students, and plenty of magic lessons.

If you live in the Americas, Europe, or Oceania, you can pre-register for Harry Potter: Magic Awakened starting today on Google Play or the game’s official website. Doing so will get you exclusive rewards when the game hits mobile later this year. After surpassing additional pre-register tiers, players can unlock extra prizes, including in-game currency, cosmetic items, and a Niffler card.

While waiting for Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, check out the reveal trailer for Hogwarts Legacy and then read about how it was delayed out of 2021 and into 2022. Check out this story about how controversial Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling was not involved with the development of Hogwarts Legacy (although she’ll still be making money off of it) after that.

Harry Potter Becomes a Cyber Coding Wizard in a Re-Imagined Trailer For the Harry Potter Films

Alex Skor of Inventor Headquarters celebrated the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter films in 2021 with “Harry Potter and the Prisoners of Cyberpunk”, a clever reimagination of the trailer from the 2001 film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and other films from the franchise.

In this version, Harry has been deemed a coding wizard and is enrolled in the “Hogwarts School of Hackercraft and Coding” where he and his friends work with electronics of all shapes and sizes to complete his schoolwork, ensure fairness among the students, and even discover who killed his parents.

An eleven-year old boy gets a visit from a giant Hikikomori and finds out that he is a wizard-level programmer and is already enrolled in Hogwarts School of Hackercraft and Coding.

Fantastic Beasts 3 Trailer: Teaser Celebrates Harry Potter Franchise

Harry Potter fans across the world are waiting with anticipation for the release of the full trailer for Fantastic Beasts 3, which is due for release in 2022.

The teaser trailer features clips and a look across all of Harry Potter‘s success, from the original books and movies right through to theme parks and Broadway productions.

We see famous clips from the film series and even a very brief glimpse of Gellert Grindelwald, to build excitement ahead of the full trailer launch.

When will the Fantastic Beasts 3 trailer be released?

The full trailer will be released on Monday, December 13, 2021, to give us our first glimpse of what the movie will tell us.

We already know that Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore are in for some trouble as Gellert Grindelwald looks to take power, but scant details have been revealed about the plot to date.

Who will star in Fantastic Beasts 3?

The headline news is that Johnny Depp will not be returning as Grindelwald following his resignation from the role, though he had filmed one scene in character before that.

Mads Mikkelsen will take over the role, having starred in films such as Doctor Strange and Hannibal.

Returning cast include Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander. Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski and Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein.

When will Fantastic Beasts 3 be released?

Fantastic Beasts 3 will be released in the United Kingdom on April 8, 2022, with a US release date a week later, on April 15, 2022.

The film was originally set for release in November 2021, but the pandemic caused delays to filming which pushed back the release date.

Johnny Depp‘s resignation led to Warner Bros initially pushing the launch back even further, to July 2022, but they have since brought it forward to April 2022.

How to follow sites without RSS feeds on Feedly

If you’re already a Feedly user, you know the power of being able to create a personalized feed for your interests. Most blogs and other news sources already use RSS to integrate to Feedly, but what if you find one that doesn’t?

Well, now Feedly has a custom RSS Builder tool, so you can create your own feeds for websites that don’t have RSS.

That gives you all the power of Feedly and its AI research assistant, Leo; for any website you find. Maybe you regularly check out fringe sources or small websites that don’t have a developer on hand to add RSS. This is perfect for those sites.

Here’s how to build custom RSS feeds on Feedly

You’ll need to be either a Pro+ or Enterprise subscription user to do this. Pro+ users can create up to 25 RSS feeds, while Enterprise ones can create up to 100.

  1. Head to feedly.com and sign in

  2. Click on the Follow New Sources button

  3. Paste the URL of the website you want to create an RSS feed from, into the search box

  4. Click on the Build RSS Feed button

  5. Click on any article on the left to create the RSS feed. If it looks correct, click on the Build RSS Feed button

  6. Name your new feed (we suggest the website’s name), and add it to your category feed of choice.

That’s it, now you’ve got a custom RSS feed of a website that doesn’t have its own RSS feed set up. It’s a handy tool, with a couple of big limitations.

You have to create the RSS feeds using the web app, but they show up in the mobile apps after that. Mac users will have to install another browser to use the web app, as Safari’s security settings won’t let the necessary code run.
