Bitchin’: The Sound And Fury Of Rick James (Sept. 3)
Before he was a Dave Chappelle punchline, Rick James was one of the most iconoclastic men in funk, crafting can’t-miss hits that took inspiration from multiple genres to sound completely unique. This new doc from director Sacha Jenkins boasts never-before-seen video footage.
Detainee 001 (Sept. 10)
Dubbed the “American Taliban,” John Walker Lindh joined up with Osama Bin Laden’s forces in 2000. After being captured, he spent almost two decades in prison. This gripping documentary explores what would drive a young Catholic from Maryland into the arms of a terrorist force.
American Rust (Sept. 12)
Jeff Daniels stars in this new prestige drama based on the novel by Philipp Meyer. Set in a dilapidated Pennsylvania steel town, it explores what happens when the American dream is ripped away with nothing left to fill the void. The source material is very well-regarded, so this could be a sleeper hit.
