MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis director is hoping to make movie magic with one of the most anticipated comedies in years.

Craig Brewer’s “Coming 2 America” premieres Friday on Amazon Prime Video.

Brewer is known locally for his 2005 indie film “Hustle and Flow,” which was filmed in Memphis.

Now, he’s riding high on the success of his more recent film, “Dolemite Is My Name.”

The movie starred comedic icon Eddie Murphy. Now, the two have teamed up again for a highly anticipated sequel. “Coming to America” was released in 1988.

Murphy is reprising his role as Prince Akeem of a frictional African nation.

FOX13′s Darcy Thomas sat down with Brewer for a one-on-one interview about the project.

“My biggest hope is when people see my movies, that it’s a good story, but ultimately they they felt something, that they felt something real in it they can connect to,” he said.

Brewer said the sequel is designed to be a celebration, not only of the original movie, but of its fan base as well.

In honor of the film’s release the FedExForum is flying the Zamunda flag outside the arena Friday.
