Angelina Jolies Maleficent debuted to $170 million in North America.

This makes it a career best for Angelina, who plays the title character in the Disney live-action remake of the classic fairytale.

The movie also performed well overseas, making $100.6 million internationally, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Maleficents success is said to be thanks in very large part to the number of women who bought tickets, something that worked very well with 2013s Frozen. 60 percent of the audience was reportedly female, with 30 percent being under the age of 18.

It is the best opening of Angelinas career, ahead of 2008s Kung Fu Panda, Wanted, and 2005s Mr. Mrs. Smith.

“To be able to take something like Sleeping Beauty and come at it from a different angle is intriguing. Then when you can lay on the Disney brand and a star like Angelina Jolie, and you have all the ingredients,” Disney’s distribution chief Dave Hollis said.

Angelina has spoken about why she came back from a four-year acting hiatus to take on the role. According to the actress, the script and concept was irresistible.

Its such a great project, she told the Los Angeles Daily News. After having directed and thinking that I wasnt sure if I wanted to act, this was such a crazy idea and I was so challenged by it. As an actress, it was to not do something where Im taking myself so seriously and trying to do something for myself and my art, but just to remember that it was to play and entertain and to try something big.
