Sandra Bullock shows off her tediously stoic side in Netflix’s The Unforgivable

As Ruth Slater, a woman who’s just been released from prison after 20 years, Sandra Bullock makes a concerted effort to void her face of all expression. The character’s look is appropriately unglamorous—off-the-rack wardrobe, no makeup, hair generally pulled back in a tight bun that suggests severity—but Bullock seems to fear that showing any hint of emotion would amount to a betrayal of Ruth’s inner pain. She lashes out in anger when provoked but otherwise might as well be The Woman With No Name, squinting the world down with a cheroot poking from one corner of her mouth. It’s a superficial, one-dimensional conception of someone who’s been hardened by suffering and sorrow, setting the tone for a risibly unbelievable melodrama.

As it happens, The Unforgivable is a remake of Unforgiven—not Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winner, as Bullock seems to mistakenly believe, but a 2009 British miniseries with the same title (which Netflix has understandably opted to tweak slightly). In theory, the two should be roughly equivalent: Unforgiven consisted of three 45-minute episodes, running in total only about 20 minutes longer than this movie’s two hours. Most of the plot elements and characters have been duplicated, too, though the action’s been transplanted from Yorkshire to the Seattle area. Something went seriously awry in the process, given how acclaimed the miniseries was. At the same time, however, the film’s least believable aspects seem to come straight from the source.

Those don’t emerge for a while (episode three was quite the bombshell), and The Unforgivable flatlines long before then. Part of the problem may be the nature of Ruth’s crime: 20 years earlier, she’d shot and killed a county sheriff who’d shown up at her house to serve eviction papers. That’s what’s unforgivable, in this context—not just murder, but specifically the murder of a law enforcement officer, which here provokes universal disgust and revulsion at a level usually reserved for child molestation. Ruth’s probation officer (Rob Morgan) more or less counsels her to accept being a permanent societal outcast, which is more implausible now than it might have been even two years ago.

Ruth robotically resumes her life on the outside, taking a job gutting fish (she’s a carpenter by trade, but the gig she’d lined up suddenly vanishes when the boss learns that she’s a cop killer) and sleeping in a dormitory-style facility for former inmates. But she devotes nearly every conscious, non-working moment to tracking down her younger sister, Katie (The Nightingale’s Aisling Franciosa), who’s been adopted by another family. This aspect of the story had already required some finessing—there needed to be a reason why a five-year-old girl, at the time of the incident, had no family apart from Ruth—and casting Bullock necessarily created a massive three-decade age gap between the siblings. (Suranne Jones, who played the original Ruth, was 31.) Not impossible, of course, but rather unusual; simply making Ruth Katie’s mother instead would have been less jarring.

In any case, Katie, now a college student, has only a few jagged memories of her early childhood and considers her adoptive parents and sister to be her true family. She also hasn’t been told what her sister did, nor given any of the zillion letters that Ruth wrote her from prison. So there’s potential conflict a-plenty there, set in motion when Ruth visits her old house and meets its current owners, one of whom (Vincent D’Onofrio) conveniently happens to be a high-powered attorney. After the requisite bout of disgust and revulsion, he agrees to help her try to make contact. Meanwhile, the adult sons (Thomas Guiry and Will Pullen) of the murdered sheriff, livid that Ruth has been freed, plot their revenge, which they decide will be an eye for an eye: They’ll kill somebody that Ruth loves. Guess who?

150 minutes of battery life

Three speeds

Portable form factor

There’s a big revelation buried deep underneath all of this intrigue, which director Nora Fingscheidt (System Crasher, likewise on Netflix) and the film’s three credited screenwriters none-too-subtly signal by providing only fleeting, chaotic images of the murder until very near the end. What actually happened—as conceived by Sally Wainwright, who wrote the miniseries—doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but perhaps the tale was originally told with such emotional richness and nervewracking tension that nobody much cared.

Here, everything’s so flatly emphatic that each story beat feels mechanistic. Neither Ruth nor anybody else (with the minor, welcome exception of a potential love interest played by Jon Bernthal) feels like a credible human being driven by recognizable impulses; even a titan like Viola Davis, as the attorney’s considerably less empathetic wife, can’t transcend her character’s straitjacketed narrative function. The whole thing comes across as a movie star’s anti-vanity project, just an opportunity for Bullock to demonstrate her ostensible range. Okay, she can be hard and stoic and affectless. Noted.

Liev Schreiber Is Back as Ray Donovan in First Trailer for New Film

Ray Donovan is back, and Mickey better watch out.

On Monday Nov. 22, Showtime released an all-new bone-chilling trailer for Ray Donovan: The Movie, which premieres on Friday, Jan. 14. The film picks up where season seven left off back in January 2020, with Mickey (Jon Voight) on the run and Ray (Liev Schreiber) determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage.

According to the official description, “the film also weaves together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years ago.”

The trailer is filled with images of guns, punches, kicked down doors, smashed car windows and toasts of scotch. “I tell you something I did,” Ray says on the phone in the intense first look. “Something bad.”

As the trailer continues, Terry Donovan (Eddie Marsan) says, “He’s not going up there for the money, he’s gonna kill Mickey.”

This Encanto Song Will Be Stuck in Your Head All Day

This Thanksgiving weekend, there’s a ton of brand new content you can watch with your family, but how much of it is actually about family? One title in particular stands out and that’s Encanto, the latest film from Disney Animation.

Encanto is about the Madrigals, a Colombian family who live in a small mountain town and have superpowers. Wait, what? Yes, that’s true, but not in a comic-book way. The family all use their powers to help the people in town. At a very young age, each member of the Madrigal family finds out what power they have, such as super strength, super hearing, the ability talk to animals, and so on. Throughout history this has happened to everyone in their family, except one of the younger children, Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz). That Mirabel doesn’t have powers makes her feel like an outsider in her own family, so to make up for it she goes on an adventure to try and solve some problems the super family is having, when their abilities and magical house seem to be on the fritz.

A big part of that journey has to do with her uncle Bruno (John Leguizamo), who disappeared after a seemingly mysterious event. The audience learns this when Mirabel starts to ask her family about Bruno… and that’s when Lin-Manuel Miranda takes over. Miranda wrote all of the songs in Encanto and Disney has released a brand new clip of one if his catchiest songs. It’s called “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and it’s about the whole family talking about Bruno. Warning though: this is going to be in your head all day.

“Every verse and every stanza introduces a different character,” Miranda said in a press release. “They’re all riding the same musical landscape, but they ride it completely differently. Everyone sings the same chord progression with a totally different rhythm and a totally different cadence.” And then, of course, there’s the clever twist that a song that’s about not talking about Bruno explains exactly what happened with Bruno. “I think every family has stories you’re not allowed to talk about—we all have land mines inside our families,” Miranda said. “The more forbidden something is, the more you want to talk about it.”

Encanto is a lovely film with incredible music, visuals, and a real emotional family story. That it’s about a bunch of people with super powers almost doesn’t even matter. And that’s why it’s so great. It opens in theaters today.

Bruce Willis is filming a movie thriller in Alabama

If you see a guy who looks like Bruce Willis in Alabama this week, it’s perfectly fine to do a double take.

The actor, 66, is filming a movie thriller, “Die Like Lovers,” in the Birmingham area.

Jesse Atlas, director and co-writer of the movie, confirmed to AL.com that filming is underway here. The movie is based on his 2017 short film “Let Them Die Like Lovers,” about a body-hopping assassin who starts to question her identity and the morality of her violent assignments.

It’s unclear what role Willis will play in the full-length feature, or if the main character’s gender will be changed to accommodate the star. In the short, directed by Atlas and written by Atlas and Aaron Wolfe, the assassin is a woman named Alex (played by Angela Lewis).

According to a report by Deadline Hollywood, Willis signed on for the film in April — its title was listed there as “Soul Assassin” — and Nomzamo Mbatha of “Coming 2 America” and Dominic Purcell of “Blade: Trinity” and TV’s “Prison Break” were in talks to join the cast.

The plot of the movie was described this way by Deadline: “A woman’s husband is killed in action as part of an experimental new military program. A former black-ops soldier then takes his place to find his killer.”

Brickell Broadbridge International are producing the film, Deadline says, along with Endless Media.

The Alabama Film Office confirmed that the primary filming locations for “Die Like Lovers” will be in the Birmingham area, but other details weren’t available.

Recent casting calls for background actors and stand-ins for “Die Like Lovers” were posted on Facebook by Goleman Casting. The notices said work in various categories was available June 21-25, and called for background actors who would play diner customers and members of a black ops team.

“Die Like Lovers” is the latest in a long line of movie projects for Willis. The actor has more than a dozen films in the pipeline, according to IMDB, many of which are in pre- or post-production.

His resume includes the “Die Hard” series, “Pulp Fiction,” “12 Monkeys,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Sin City,” “The Fifth Element,” “Motherless Brooklyn,” “Unbreakable” and “Glass.”

On television, Willis is best known for his breakthrough role on “Moonlighting” (1985-1989). Playing a wisecracking private detective opposite Cybill Shepherd, he won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe in 1987. “Moonlighting” set the stage for his film career, where Willis earned fame as an action hero.

Willis received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.

“The decision has been made to try and keep theaters closed that aren’t covering their expenses,” Gerber said. “As far as when it will reopen, I’m not exactly sure.”

Rather than following the plot of the games, which have sold over 41 million copies, the movie tells a prequel story featuring Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) as a young treasure hunter learning from his mentor Victor Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg).
