India’s Leading Documentary Filmmaker Has a Warning

Sometime after the screening began, the sound system broke down. The audience, until then attentive, quickly exited. When the film resumed after 20 minutes, no more than 10 or 12 people were still in their seats.

“The breakdown was deliberate, you know,” Patwardhan told me later that night, over dinner. For a moment I was reminded of the disrupted screening at Ambedkar University, of men banging doors and cutting off the power in protest. But a country’s slide into intolerance is rarely so dramatic: Norms don’t always collapse overnight; they corrode against the background of everyday life. “No, I meant the sound technicians,” Patwardhan continued, as if reading my thoughts. “I think they forced the interruption. It has been a long day — they probably wanted to go home.”

At 70, Patwardhan is nearly the same age as independent India, and his appearance — long hair, youthful face, leather strap sandals, loose homespun cotton tunics — is at once haphazard and hopeful, not unlike the promise of a new republic. India’s promise was embodied by three founding fathers: Gandhi, with his message of nonviolence, his deep distrust of Western civilization and his distress in his last year, after witnessing the bloodshed of the Partition; Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, a liberal who called dams and power plants the “temples of modern India” and saw industrialization as the best way forward; and Bhimrao Ambedkar, who was born a Dalit — the former “untouchables” who occupy the lowest rungs of the caste system — and rose to become one of the main authors of the country’s constitution, embracing Buddhism in protest against Hindu society’s inherent disparities. Despite their different priorities, the three shared a vision of India that preserved its historic heterogeneity, where secularism meant not an absence of religion from the public sphere but a benign, if sometimes mushy, affinity for all faiths.

Patwardhan grew up a beneficiary of that promise. His father worked in publishing; his mother was a renowned artist and potter. His uncles — one a Gandhian, another a socialist — were frequently in prison during British rule. His aunt had escaped from jail into Nepal and briefly undergone weapons training. According to Patwardhan, Ambedkar had even stayed for a while in their family house. Still, Patwardhan doesn’t recall his early years with enthusiasm. “I was a spoilt child,” he told me, “very frivolous, very privileged.”

Though India’s freedom struggle loomed large in his family life, growing up Patwardhan was oblivious to politics. He studied English literature at Elphinstone College in Mumbai, where he remembers not participating in anything: “I bunked too many classes, spent too much time in the college canteen,” he said. But in 1970, a scholarship to attend Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., transformed him overnight into an activist. “Suddenly I was attending Black Panther rallies, going to jail for anti-Vietnam demonstrations,” he said. Angela Davis and Abbie Hoffman had both graduated not too long before. Patwardhan recalls that two students were wanted by the F.B.I. during his time there. Sundar Burra, a close friend of Patwardhan’s at Brandeis, remembers the insurgent mood on campus. “We had a joke about a certain professor,” Burra told me, “that your grades in his course depended on the number of times you’d been to jail with him.”

After graduation, Patwardhan overstayed his visa to volunteer for the labor organizer Cesar Chavez in California. He returned to India and worked for two years with a nonprofit in a remote village. In 1974, he was asked to film a protest march led by students and farmers against the corrupt Indira Gandhi government. He borrowed two cameras, bought some outdated film stock, recruited a friend as a cameraman and set off for Bihar, still one of India’s poorest states, where the protesters had planned a huge rally.

Sharon Stone’s memoir: 5 key moments from The Beauty of Living Twice

“Now, here is the issue. It didn’t matter anymore. It was me and my parts up there. I had decisions to make,” she writes. “I went to the projection booth, slapped Paul [Verhoeven, the director] across the face, left, went to my car, and called my lawyer.”

iQIYI’s Ultimate Online Cinema Section to Premiere “Shaolin Master” Through PVOD Mode, on First Day of Chinese New Year

“We hope that Shaolin Master can win favor with our audience as previous PVOD titles have. Going forward, iQIYI’s Ultimate Online Cinema section will continue streaming a slate of high-quality films, providing premium new offerings for our subscribers. At the same time, we also hope that the PVOD mode will achieve sustainable development, as we work with platforms and creators to build a healthy online film ecosystem where filmmakers can identify their clients, guarantee their incomes, and seize exciting new opportunities,” said Song Jia, Vice President of iQIYI and General Manager of iQIYI Film Business Center.

Shaolin Master – the only action film scheduled to premiere online during the Spring Festival film season

With the 2021 Spring Festival film season around the corner, seven films have announced their release in theatres on the first day of the holiday. Shaolin Master is the first and only action film scheduled to premiere online for the first day of the holiday.

In the Stanley Tong-directed film, Wang Baoqiang plays the role of Ximen Debao, an inn-keeper with no ambition. The film tells the story of how Ximen Debao who was framed for crimes, being trained with an eminent monk to prove his innocence. In recent years, Wang has successfully portrayed a number of impressive comic roles in a series of well-received and lucrative Blockbusters such as Lost in Thailand and Detective Chinatown. In this new film, Wang has cast off his stereotypical image of “comic actor” and transformed into an orthodox warrior monk of the Shaolin Master

PVOD mode, a new favored option for filmmakers and studios

In 2020, the PVOD mode became a new avenue for film distribution worldwide as movie theaters were closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the Chinese market, iQIYI launched the action comedy film Enter the Fat Dragon last February via PVOD, allowing its subscribers to enjoy a new theatrical film at an affordable price in the comfort of their own homes. In doing so, iQIYI took the lead among Chinese video streaming platforms in exploring the PVOD mode.

In the past year, more than 10 films have been released on the iQIYI platform through the PVOD mode, including Spring Tide, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, Knockout, and Double World. The online distribution of high-quality theatrical films has quickly covered a wide range of genres. Based on the runaway success of the mode, the Company launched its Ultimate Online Cinema section in July 2020 to promote a systematic PVOD-based cooperation with filmmakers.

Currently, not only have the films on iQIYI’s Ultimate Online Cinema received revenue directly from subscribers, but they have also achieved widespread acclaim from the industry. Spring Tide was nominated for Best Feature Film and Best Director at the 33rd Golden Rooster Awards. Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains was selected as one of the top ten films of 2020 by the Cahiers du Cinéma, a famous French film magazine.

During the 2021 Spring Festival season, iQIYI, together with several other video streaming platforms will release Shaolin Master through the PVOD mode. Through these initiatives, iQIYI is working with a growing number of filmmakers and platforms to create good content, accelerating the development of Direct-to-Consumer in the film industry and building a broader distribution model for filmmakers.

Universal Pictures In Deal To Make Definitive Madonna Biopic; Material Girl Is Directing, Co-Writing With Diablo Cody & Producing With Amy Pascal

Universal Pictures has signed on to be the home for a biopic of iconic singer Madonna, who will direct her own story from a script she is writing with Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody. Madonna will produce the film with Pascal Pictures’ Amy Pascal. Madonna will not act in the film, but she will lead a search for a young actress who will play her in the formative stages of a disruptor’s career that set the template for all the diva singing stars who’ve followed, from Beyonce to Lady Gaga.

The film will tell the story of Madonna’s growth into a chart topping juggernaut and style icon with the staying power to become the all-time bestselling female artist — 335 million records worldwide — and the highest grossing solo touring numbers ever. She has been on the cover of more than 4700 magazines through her career. She and Cody have been very open on social media about their progress on the film, and even the other day she suggested the film might be called Live To Tell, a song from the 1986 film At Close Range.

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” said Madonna in a statement. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

It is hard to recall another big music biopic directed by its subject, though the surviving members of Queen had a lot of influence on the Blockbuster Bohemian Rhapsody about the band and its late frontman Freddie Mercury, and Elton John was exec producer and his partner David Furnish a producer on Rocketman. Sara Zambreno and Guy Oseary will be exec producers on this, and the film’s ability to avail the vast catalogue of hit songs makes the potential here quite large on a global scale.

After leaving her Michigan home to move to New York to become a dancer, Madonna instead found her way as a solo singing artist. From the moment she began generating early hits like Like A Virgin, Borderline and Lucky Star, it was clear that Madonna was different from the rest. Her looks, dance moves and provocative persona were a perfect fit for MTV as that network hit stride. She soon found her way into movies, first glimpsed in Vision Quest, and then costarring in Desperately Seeking Susan, which introduced the smash song Into The Groove. She followed with turns in Evita, A League of their Own, Dick Tracy and others, and directed W.E., the 2011 drama that focused on the relationship between King Edward VIII and American divorcée Wallis Simpson that led him to abdicate. She directed the short films Filth Wisdom, SecretProjectRevolution with Steven Klein, and she created/produced the docu I Am Because We Are, about the children of Malawi. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, and became a humanitarian in the area of AIDS awareness, LGBTQ rights, speaking out for gender equality, and supporting orphans and vulnerable children through her non-profit organization, Raising Malawi. She has let us behind the curtain a bit in the documentary Truth Or Dare, but she has quite a tale to tell.

The project was embraced by a couple of strong Hollywood female film industry vets, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Chairman Donna Langley, along with Pascal, who spent 30 years at Sony Pictures, most of it as chairman before leaving to make a first look deal at Universal.

“Madonna is the ultimate icon, humanitarian, artist and rebel,” said Langley. “With her singular gift of creating art that is as accessible as it is boundary-pushing, she has shaped our culture in a way very few others have. It’s an incredible honor for everyone at Universal to work alongside her, Diablo, and Amy to bring audiences and dedicated fans around the world her unvarnished story for the first time.”

Courtesy of Richard Corman

Pascal most recently produced the Best Picture nominee Little Women, and the Venom and Spider-Man films at Sony Pictures. Cody most recently scripted and produced the Jason Reitman-directed Tully, which starred Charlize Theron.

“This movie is an absolute labor of love for me,” said Pascal. “I have known Madonna since we made A League of Their Own together, and I can’t imagine anything more thrilling than collaborating with her and Diablo on bringing her true-life story to the big screen with Donna and our partners at Universal.”

Senior exec veep of production Erik Baiers and director of development Lexi Barta are overseeing for Universal.

Madonna is repped by CAA and Maverick, while Cody is WME, MXN Entertainment and McKuin Frankel.

Netflix is releasing a new movie every single week of 2021

Neflix says it’s “kicking 2021 off with a bang” — and it appears that momentum will last all year. The streaming service is set to release a new movie every single week of 2021, the company announced on Tuesday.

Netflix will bring you a new movie every week featuring the biggest stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sandra Bullock, Dwayne Johnson, Idris Elba, Meryl Streep, Zendaya, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner, Gal Gadot, Dave Bautista, Naomi Watts, Jake Gyllenhaal, John David Washington and Octavia Spencer,” a press release reads.

Not only is the 2021 movie slate star-studded, but many of the films are created by award-winning filmmakers, including Adam McKay, who is behind movies like “Vice” and “The Big Short.”

McKay is producing and directing “Don’t Look Up,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Timothee Chalamet, Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, Cate Blanchet and more.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Halle Berry are also making their directorial debuts with films on the streaming platform. Miranda is directing “tick, tick…BOOM!” starring Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens and Judith Light.

Berry will direct “Bruised,” in which she’ll also star.

Plus, popular Netflix films like “To All the Boys” and “The Kissing Booth” will get the final installments in their trilogies.

Netflix’s slate includes 70 new movies — many of them featured in a super tease the company shared on YouTube.

Several new titles have already been released this month, including “Chris Rock Total Blackout: The Tamborine Extended Cut,” a new comedy special from Chris Rock, and “Pretend It’s a City,” a Martin Scorsese-directed documentary about Fran Lebowitz.

With some movie theaters starting to fail — even before the pandemic hit — and many people staying at home, streaming services like Netflix are receiving more and more content.

“Dragon’s Favourite”: RSS Mouthpiece Targets Aamir Khan

'Dragon's Favourite': RSS Mouthpiece Targets Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan met Turkish first lady earlier this month.

New Delhi:

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has been targeted in the mouthpiece of the RSS, the ideological parent of the ruling BJP, more than a week after he met Turkish first lady Emine Erdogan. He has been questioned over the meeting and his endorsement of Chinese products.

The article – titled “Dragon’s favourite Khan” – takes a dig at the actor for shooting his latest movie – “Laal Singh Chaddha” – in Turkey. It also claims that Aamir Khan’s endorsement of Chinese products is “an oversight of security norms” and links his popularity in the country to the recent border tensions. The reference of the word “dragon” in the title probably hints at the mention of the legendary creature in Chinese mythology.

“In the last five-six years, more patriotic movies are being produced like “Uri-The Surgical Strike”, “Manikarnika”. But there are actors who, more their own country – India – like rival countries such as China and Turkey,” reads the article in RSS mouthpiece Panchjanya as it targets the 55-year-old Bollywood superstar, who has had an illustrious career of more than three decades.

“He wants to be a brand ambassador by getting pictures clicked with Turkish first lady,” the article written in Hindi further reads.

Emine Erdogan, Turkish President Recep Erdogan’s wife, tweeted pictures of her meeting with Aamir Khan in Istanbul about a week ago. “I had the great pleasure of meeting @aamir_khan, the world-renowned Indian actor, filmmaker, and director, in Istanbul. I was happy to learn that Aamir decided to wrap up the shooting of his latest movie ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ in different parts of Turkey. I look forward to it!” she wrote.

Indian ambassador in Ankara Sanjay Panda in a tweet had called the reception to “India’s Cultural Ambassador and one of our finest exponents of meaningful cinema” a “special moment”.

The article in RSS mouthpiece, however, has questioned Aamir Khan’s decision to shoot the movie in Turkey.

“If Aamir Khan thinks he is so secular, why is he planning a shooting in Turkey. People have still not forgotten his interview when he said: ‘My wife is afraid… India has become intolerant’. Why is he showing loyalty to a country where journalists have been cornered, there have been human rights violations and social media is under surveillance,” it reads.

It also attacked the Bollywood superstar for endorsing Chinese products.

“Why do Aamir Khan’s movies do well in China while other actors’ movies fail. His movie “Dangal” did so well but Salman Khan’s movie “Sultan” couldn’t get a matching response. Aamir Khan is the brand ambassador of Chinese products, this is an oversight of security norms,” reads the article, as it links border tensions to the actor’s popularity in China.

In June, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in line of duty in Ladakh as tensions with China escalated.

Bad News For The King’s Man And Bob’s Burgers As More Movie Delays Come

When movies first began to see delays early last year, there was a hope that things would get back to normal before too long. Some films were only pushed back a couple of months in hopes they could be the first back in theaters. As time went on, it became clear that mass theatrical distribution was off the table for some time, but it seems that every time the end might be in sight, it is determined not to be. 2021 is a new year, but so far it looks very much the same, as films have continued to get pushed back, and now Disney, or more specifically, Disney’s Fox subsidiaries, are the most recent to push everything back even further. Popular franchises like The King’s Man and other films previously set for early 2021, are now set for the second half of the year.

There’s now a Google Reader-style RSS feed for your newsletter habit

One issue some people are facing amid the boom in email newsletters is staying on top of all the ones they’re interested in while managing their inboxes. Substack, one of the most prominent newsletter platforms, is trying to remedy that by rolling out a newsletter reader.

Substack Reader, which is available in beta, already includes all of the newsletters to which you’re subscribed. It’s fairly bare-bones as it stands, though. You can’t read entries in the reader itself — clicking on one opens it in a new tab. There’s currently no way to clear out posts either. Substack co-founder Hamish McKenzie told The Verge that the team is “strongly considering” adding in-line reading at a later date. The company also plans to improve the reader experience in the coming months.

Still, the reader could let you automatically archive all of the Substack emails you receive and ensure you’re not missing out on anything. You can bookmark the reader on your phone’s home screen for easy access. If you sign up for the beta, the reader will take over as your Substack homepage.

Folks who yearn for the days of Google Reader or Digg Reader might appreciate the tool as well, since you can add third-party RSS feeds. There’s support for podcasts that are published on Substack, too.

The platform has also introduced another way to discover newsletters in both the reader and the Substack homepage. There are lists of the top newsletters across a number of categories (including culture, technology and sports), along with a featured section to shine a spotlight on some under-the-radar publications. Previously, there were only lists for the top paid and top free newsletters, so it should be a bit easier to find more that catch your interest.
