Taylor Swift to Appear in New David O. Russell Movie

Taylor Swift is set to appear in the next film from director David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle), as The Hollywood Reporter points out. The singer-songwriter joins a stacked cast that already includes Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, and Mike Myers, among others. The film, which was also written by Russell, has already wrapped production. The title and release date have yet to be revealed.

Swift previously appeared in the theatrical adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, in which she played the character Bombalurina. For that film, she contributed the song “Beautiful Ghosts,” a collaboration with Webber. In April, she released a re-recorded version of her album Fearless.

Use single-cell biology to shed light on pediatric diseases currently in the dark

There are few things harder for a physician to say to a patient than “I don’t know what’s wrong.” Saying that is even harder when you’re sitting across from the parent of a child with an undiagnosed condition.

And as I learned from experience, it is harder still when you work at a national referral center for rare pediatric diseases, since you are a family’s last hope: the physician they’re seeing after they’ve spent months — even years — searching for help and exhausting every other option. My heart broke every time I had to say, “I’m so sorry, but I don’t know what’s wrong.”

Of course, even after making that revelation, my colleagues and I at the University of California, San Francisco, scoured patients’ histories and medical data to find the origins of their diseases. We pored over every scrap of research that might help us understand the cellular mechanisms at play. And we listened to — and learned from — our patients and their families.

We solved some puzzles. More often, though, the pieces we needed were missing, and there was little we could do to address the underlying causes of our patients’ diseases.

That was the better part of a decade ago. Today, things are set to change, thanks to major advances in single-cell biology, the application of technologies and techniques that allow researchers to study the building blocks of life — single cells.

Over the past few years, researchers have been building reference maps for every cell type in adult human bodies. The rich data and resolution that single-cell technologies produce are already transforming our understanding of human biology. They could also reveal the cellular mechanisms for disease, including rare diseases, by identifying the activity of disease-associated genes in individual cells, as well gene activity in healthy individuals. For instance, researchers used single-cell RNA sequencing to identify a new cell type in the human airway that could help scientists develop new and improved therapies for cystic fibrosis.

Single-cell technology has also allowed scientists to quickly identify cell types in the nose that are susceptible to infection by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

The problem is that this revolution in single-cell biology and medicine has yet to fully reach pediatrics. There’s no lack of energy or passion for single-cell research in this community. But a number of systemic barriers are preventing it from taking off.

One of those barriers is funding or, to be more precise, underfunding. As a percentage of the National Institutes of Health budget, support for pediatric research has declined steadily from 12.8% in 1998 to just 1.7% in 2015. Even though NIH support for pediatric research has increased since 2015, it is still not sufficient. Pay is another issue: Pediatricians earn less than almost any other type of physician, which leads many of them to work longer clinical hours and forgo research projects they might otherwise undertake.

The challenges don’t end there. Single-cell researchers who are able to secure funding also need tissue samples to study, not only from patients who are sick but also from those who are healthy. But both of these kinds of samples are in short supply. There isn’t always a clear reason for patients and their families to donate healthy tissue, such as tissue that’s been removed during an operation. And the process of contributing any sample can be especially fraught. Families may be concerned about privacy, or feel mistrust due to historical and discriminatory practices in medicine. Or they may be unaware that participation in research is even possible.

As formidable as the barriers to research are, leaders within the pediatric community have proven that they can be overcome. Take the Children’s Oncology Group, which brings together more than 10,000 experts across 200-plus children’s hospitals. Since its founding in 1955, this community has helped families feel confident and informed about participating in pediatric cancer research and contributing tissue samples for it. The group has worked directly with parents to implement effective privacy and consent standards. And it has helped establish a paradigm where data sharing between pediatric cancer research groups is the rule rather than the exception.

The results speak for themselves. As childhood cancer research has taken off, survival rates have soared from less than 10% in the 1950s to nearly 80% today. Put another way, hundreds of thousands of children who might otherwise have died have grown up to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

Pediatrics has reached an inflection point, one in which single-cell biology can help decipher the origins of many childhood diseases.

With that in mind, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), the philanthropy I co-founded, is supporting this kind of collaboration. It aims to bring together patients, families, clinicians, and researchers to advance single-cell research and to eventually create and share an open-source reference map of all healthy pediatric tissues that scientists can access and analyze.

Several principles are guiding this approach. CZI is funding interdisciplinary teams of data scientists, experts in single-cell biology, and — this is key — pediatricians who continue to see patients. The goal is to ensure that each collaboration balances basic science research with clear practical applications and is informed by the needs of the families who have volunteered to provide samples.

These teams will contribute to open science projects, including the global Human Cell Atlas, which aims to map all of the cells in the human body to help scientists understand how healthy cells function and what goes wrong in disease. There are, of course, limits to the amount of data that can or should be shared across the pediatric research community. But as the Children’s Oncology Group has demonstrated, it is possible to maximize collaboration while honoring patient privacy — and to make extraordinary progress by doing so.

I and my CZI colleagues believe strongly that single-cell reference data must include people who have historically been underserved by past pediatric research initiatives, and suffer disproportionately from childhood disease, including Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous populations. These children must be part of the hope and progress in front of us, so this research must be conducted with partners from these communities.

While single-cell biology research networks are still small, I hope they will grow as more patients, parents, clinicians, researchers, and institutions see where this research could lead. Imagine a future in which researchers have mapped a wide range of pediatric cell types and know how they develop over time. With that knowledge, a clinician could sequence a patient’s genome and predict when, where, and how a disease is likely to manifest itself. Understanding what the onset of disease looks like at the cellular level and being able to identify features that change before pathology sets in could even help us prevent disease rather than manage illness after the fact — a development that will benefit children and adults.

These advancements would be life-changing for patients and families. The therapeutic opportunities are even more promising. Armed with the right data on gene expression and cell types, scientists and pediatricians could develop highly targeted therapies for any number of disorders. We could identify new ways to deploy existing therapeutic strategies.

Of course, that future lies beyond the reach of any one research group, network, or organization. It will require sustained investment across a wide range of institutions, from patient networks to the federal government and philanthropic funders. And it will depend on cultivating a shared understanding of the value of pediatric research, and single-cell research in particular.

When I consider the work ahead, I am reminded of “Fiat lux” — Let there be light — the motto of UCSF. It should serve as a charge to the pediatric community: Let us shed new light on diseases that remain in the dark. And let us be the light for children who need it most.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s donation of $2.5 million to RSS-linked Sewa International draws flak on social media

The move by Jack Dorsey, CEO of social media giant Twitter, to donate $2.5 million out of a total of $15 million (around Rs 110 crore) to support relief efforts in India’s ongoing COVID-19 second wave to NGO Sewa International has sparked off a major controversy.

Sewa International is said to be the American arm of Sewa Bharti, a welfare organisation affiliated with the right wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Dorsey’s statement defines Sewa International as “a Hindu faith-based, humanitarian, non-profit service organization.”

‘Rainbow capitalism’ is pandering, pure and simple, but it can still help drive social change

This year’s Pride Month is starting with a Lego set.

Pride Month is celebrated every year in honour of the Stonewall Inn riots that took place in June 1969, as well as the yearly demonstrations that followed in various cities across the U.S. and eventually the world. Pride reminds us of the violence endured, the progress made, and the hardships yet to come.

Today – the beginning of Pride Month in Canada – Lego is releasing a 346-piece LGBTQ+ themed set titled Everyone is Awesome, a clear nod to the massively popular song written for the 2014 Lego Movie (which undoubtedly traumatized many parents, teachers, and caregivers alike after the movie came out, due to how many kids were singing it non-stop – surpassed only by Baby Shark).

It’s one of the signs of how June 1 has become the start of a rainbow-themed marketing onslaught from every corner of the capitalist system. Companies of all types and sizes use Pride Month to market pride-themed consumables, decorate their stores with rainbow regalia and hammer customers with lacklustre slogans – only to pack it all up after June 30.

This phenomenon is known among the queer community as “rainbow capitalism.” It’s pandering, pure and simple.

Every year, rainbow capitalism is met with a range of responses, from outright disdain to excited cheers. The two camps that tend to form around this phenomenon represent a sort of “chicken or the egg” paradox.

One camp argues that companies are simply using queer existence and exploitation for profit, often without any form of support for the queer community.

In doing so, they say, these companies perpetuate inequality and oppression. How various identities intersect will determine the type and degree of inequality and oppression that they experience in their own individual communities as well as society at large, and for many, capitalism has been a vehicle for harmful policies including neocolonialism, gentrification, and upholding white supremacist institutions.

The second camp acknowledges that, while profiting from queer peoples’ open existence is not ideal, it’s inevitable; everyone needs to buy things, queer people included. Many LGBTQ+ people experience barriers to full economic participation due to hiring discrimination or hostile work environments, leaving them disproportionately represented in low-income categories. Being picky about whether companies are genuinely committed to LGBTQ+ welfare leaves even fewer options.

This camp also argues that explicit representation, such as rainbow signage that takes over storefronts during Pride Month, can be encouraging, even if shallow. At minimum, it signals acceptance. If you must spend your money somewhere, why not at a place that says “We support you”?

The first camp perceives the phenomenon of rainbow capitalism as being a self-interested reflection of the public acceptance and normalization that has accumulated over decades of activism. The second views it as a propagating force for that acceptance and normalization, purely for the explicit representation that occurs over an entire month.

So … what came first? The chicken or the egg? Acceptance or exploitation?

Much like what quantum physicists believe, the truth is likely that both are true simultaneously. You can be frustrated about irresponsible and disingenuous pandering, but still acknowledge the inevitability of capitalist participation.

And this is the sweet spot for change.

Real change necessitates that companies do their pandering in good faith. This means consequential engagement, support, and policies not just during Pride Month, but year-round.

It also means that we, queer and straight people alike, need to demand that the pandering be done in good faith. This can include putting pressure on companies to truly embrace meaningful change by:

  • Demanding workplace policies to develop inclusive work environments;
  • Hiring LGBTQ+ people at all levels, including high-level corporate positions;
  • Planning and running community events that promote LGBTQ+ interests, arts, and businesses;
  • Creating partnership and mentorship initiatives with queer businesses;
  • Providing internships through universities and high schools;
  • And creating capital grant programs for queer entrepreneurs.

There are a million ways that companies can sincerely engage with queer folk and communities year-round that will help our community become more normalized and accepted and keep us spending our money.

And so many ways we can all help encourage that engagement.

For my part, I’ll probably buy that Lego set. But I’m also going to donate $50 to the Queer Education Foundation to support their mission to create inclusive and intersectional spaces.


Will Smith movie ‘Emancipation’ pulled from Georgia over voting law now filming in New Orleans

A movie recently pulled from Georgia over its controversial election law is now being produced in New Orleans.

It was announced Tuesday in a news conference held by the City of New Orleans that production of the movie “Emancipation” will be moved to New Orleans following controversy surrounding Georgia’s recent election restrictions law.

The movie stars Will Smith and is being directed by Antoine Fuqua.

“New Orleans is a welcoming city, which is why we believe they chose to move their production,” said Beau Tidwell, Communications Director for the City of New Orleans.

The film is the largest and most high-profile Hollywood production to depart the state since Georgia’s Republican-controlled state legislature passed a law that introduced stiffer voter identification requirements for absentee balloting, limited drop boxes and gave the State Election Board new powers to intervene in county election offices and to remove and replace local election officials, according to the Associated Press.

Opponents have said the law is designed to reduce the impact of minority voters.

“Emancipation” had been scheduled to begin shooting in June. Apple Studios acquired the film last year in a deal reportedly worth $130 million. Based on a true story, the film stars Smith as a slave who flees a Louisiana plantation and joins the Union Army, according to the Associated Press.

It’s a question as old as the ’90s: Is a good video game movie even possible? Three Mortal Kombat movies later, we’re still not sure.

The latest movie adaptation of the popular video game is now streaming on HBO Max. It’s gotten mixed reviews, but it also seems to have surprised audiences.

Is it a “Flawless Victory” at the pandemic-era box office? And can a Mortal Kombat movie really succeed…without a bona fide Mortal Kombat?

The 2021 Golden Globes are around the corner, so it’s a good time to take a look at the films that were honored with nominations.

Streaming services were the big winner this year in terms of nods, with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+ and HBO Max all scoring nominations in various categories.

With the bizarre film release schedule dictated by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the nominations left many puzzled this time around, but some nominations — such as those for the late Chadwick Boseman — came as no surprise.

Here’s a look back at the 2021 Golden Globe-nominated films:

GOLDEN GLOBES 2021: WHAT TO KNOW

“The Father”

“The Father” is one of the year’s most heavily nominated films, which makes sense as it stars two Hollywood heavyweights: Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman — both of whom received nominations for their performances.

The film also received a nomination for the night’s top award, best motion picture – drama, and for its screenplay.

The flick follows Hopkins’ character Anthony as he struggles with aging, turning away help from his daughter Anne, played by Colman.

“Mank”

A story about Hollywood itself, it’s no surprise that “Mank” scored a slew of nominations, including best motion picture, best director, best screenplay and best original score.

GOLDEN GLOBES 2021 NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED

The movie chronicles Herman Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman) as he hurries to write “Citizen Kane” and grows close with Marion Davies (Amanda Seyfried).

Both Oldman and Seyfried were nominated as well.

“Nomadland”

“Nomadland” is an awards favorite, having nabbed a nomination for best motion picture – drama.

Writer-director Chloé Zhao scored double nominations for her work and Frances McDormand also earned a nod for playing Fern, a nomad traveling through the American West in her van after losing everything.

“Promising Young Woman”

“Promising Young Woman” follows Cassandra, a grieving woman on a warpath to avenge the sexual assault of her best friend.

Carey Mulligan earned a nomination for her performance as Cassandra while the picture also earned nominations for its direction and screenplay.

Finally, it earned a best motion picture – drama nod as well.

“The Trial of the Chicago 7”

One of the year’s movies based on a true story, “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” chronicles the legal drama endured by a group of men accused of inciting a riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

The movie was nominated for best motion picture, best director, best screenplay and best original song (“Hear My Voice), as well as for Sacha Baron Cohen‘s portrayal of Abbie Hoffman.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”

Chadwick Boseman received a nomination for his role in Netflix’s ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.’ The movie marks Boseman’s last on-screen role, and he portrays a confident horn player dead set on making a mark on the music industry while backing up blues legend Ma Rainey.

Based on the famous August Wilson play, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is best known for being Boseman’s final on-screen role.

He earned a nod for his performance as Levee, an ambitious and confident horn player who struggles to find his place backing up blues icon Ma Rainey.

Viola Davis, who portrays Rainey, also earned a nod.

“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”

When targeted by the US government via an undercover sting operation, music legend Billie Holiday is forced to defend herself — and her music — on stage and in the courtroom.

Andra Day scored two nominations for the picture: One for playing Holiday and a second for writing the song “Tigress Tweed” with Raphael Saadiq.

“Pieces of a Woman”

Vanessa Kirby has long been considered a favorite to win awards for her performances in Netflix’s “Pieces of a Woman,” though co-star Shia Labeouf‘s controversy has brought the flick some negative attention.

The film sees Kirby play Martha, a woman who loses her child shortly after giving birth and must face life head-on while clashing with her family.

“Sound of Metal”

In one of the year’s biggest surprises, “The Mauritanian” earned two nominations: One for Jodie Foster and another for Tahar Rahim.

The original “Borat” film earned a Golden Globe for Cohen’s performance, so it makes sense that he’d earn another this time around for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”

Also recognized was Cohen’s co-star Maria Bakalova, and the flick also earned a nod for best motion picture – musical or comedy.

“Hamilton”

“Hamilton” became an instant hit on Disney+ in the summer of 2020 and with all of the Tony Awards the original Broadway production scored, it’s no surprise that the filmed version earned a Golden Globe nomination for best motion picture – musical or comedy.

Star Lin-Manuel Miranda also was nominated for his performance.

“Music”

“Music” was marred by controversy because of director Sia’s casting of neurotypical actress Maddie Ziegler as a teenager who has autism, so it was a surprise to many to see it earn a nomination for best motion picture – musical or comedy.

Kate Hudson, who starred as a sober drug dealer raising her autistic sister, also earned a nomination.

“Palm Springs”

“Palm Springs” earned a nomination for best motion picture – musical or comedy.  

The movie tells the story of Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti) as they live a “Groundhog Day”-style life after being endlessly trapped in the desert.

Samberg earned an acting nod for the film as well.

“The Prom”

Netflix’s “The Prom” sees four Broadway stars (played by Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells) take to a small-town in Indiana to come to the defense of a young woman who is barred from taking her girlfriend to the high school prom.

Streep was considered likely to be nominated, so many were surprised to see that in addition to a nod for best motion picture – musical or comedy, Corden is the only star to have received a nomination.

Screen veteran Michelle Pfeiffer scored a nomination for portraying aging socialite Frances Prince who is not only battling financial struggles but is also forced to move into a small apartment with her son and cooky cat.

“I Care a Lot”

“I Care a Lot” was another one of the year’s surprising nominees. It scored a nod for star Rosamund Pike‘s performance as Marla, a caretaker who swindles her patients.

Things take a turn, however, when she finally meets her match.

“Emma.”

Anya Taylor-Joy, who was nominated for her performance in “Emma,” is certainly one of the year’s breakout stars.

The film follows the titular character, who meddles in her friends’ love lives in 1800s England.

“The Personal History of David Copperfield”

Another flick that might have flown under most viewers’ radar is “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” 

It is based on the classic Charles Dickens‘ tale of an orphan overcoming life’s curveballs as he grows up.

Emmy and Oscar-nominee Dev Patel earned a nod for his turn in the lead role.

“Hillbilly Elegy”

Although the film was widely panned by critics, “Hillbilly Elegy” star and Hollywood darling Glenn Close nabbed a nomination for her work.

The movie tells the story of a Yale student who must go back home to his low-income midwestern family.

“News of the World”

What would award season be without Tom Hanks?

While the star himself wasn’t nominated, his flick “News of the World — which follows Hanks’ Civil War veteran as he returns a young girl to her family — did earn nods for Hanks’s co-star Helena Zengel and for the film’s score.

“Judas and the Black Messiah”

Inspired by a true story, “Judas and the Black Messiah” tells the tale of the FBI’s infiltration of the Black Panther party during J. Edgar Hoover’s presidency.

Daniel Kaluuya’s performance as civil rights leader Fred Hampton earned him a nomination, and H.E.R.’s song “Fight for You” also earned a nod for the songstress, Dernst Emile II and Tiara Thomas.

“The Little Things”

Yet another shocker, “The Little Things” saw Jared Leto earn a nomination for his role as a man suspected of a hideous crime.

“On the Rocks”

Apple TV+ entered the game by securing a nod for Bill Murray’s supporting role in “On the Rocks.”

The picture follows Murray and his daughter (played by Rashida Jones) as they work as amateur sleuths to investigate her husband and his potential extra-marital affair.

Broadway star Leslie Odom Jr. earned himself two nominations — one for playing Cooke and another for writing the song “Speak Now” with Sam Ashworth.

“The Midnight Sky”

George Clooney‘s return to Hollywood saw him portray a scientist in near-isolation hoping to prevent colleagues from returning to a post-apocalyptic world in “The Midnight Sky.”

Famed composer Alexandre Desplat earned a nod for creating the picture’s score.

Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language:

  • “Another Round:” Four teachers develop a theory that keeping alcohol in their bloodstream will improve their lives — and they test that very theory.
  • “La Llorona:” An aging war criminal is haunted by the ghosts of his past while he’s being looked over by his wife.
  • “The Life Ahead:” A young thief is taken in by a Holocaust survivor and her family. The Sophia Loren-starring film also earned a nomination for the original song “Io sì (Seen).”
  • “Minari:” A Korean Family moves to the Southern United States to start a new life in the 1980s. The film’s inclusion in the foreign-language category drew controversy considering it’s largely an American film.
  • “Two of Us:” Two women have hidden their love for one another for many years, and things become even more difficult when they’re unable to visit one another freely.

Best Motion Picture – Animated: 

  • “The Croods: A New Age:” A sequel to “The Croods,” the flick sees the prehistoric family face off against another clan that claims to be more advanced.
  • “Onward:” When given an opportunity to bring their father back for just a day, two elven brothers set out on a dangerous quest.
  • “Over the Moon:” With a dream to meet a mystical moon goddess, a young girl builds a rocket to blast into outer space.
  • “Soul:” When he finally gets his big break, jazz musician Joe winds up trapped between this life and the next, and must learn about himself in order to get back home.
  • “Wolfwalkers:” A hunter takes his daughter into the Irish wilderness to wipe out a wolf pack, but plans begin to change when the daughter makes a new friend

Director Shankar’s next to have Ram Charan in the lead

Producer Dil Raju is set to collaborate with actor Ram Charan and director Shankar for an yet-to-be-titled film. The film will have a pan-India release in three languages: Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

The film will be Ram Charan’s next after his much-anticipated film, S.S Rajamouli’s RRR, while Shankar still has Indian 2 with Kamal Haasan in the pipeline.

Talking about this large-scale project, producer Dil Raju shared, “I am extremely happy and elated to collaborate with India’s finest actor Ram Charan and director Shankar. We are bringing this movie to pan-India audience with a vision of creating cinema that will entertain the masses.”

This will be Ram Charan’s 15th film, and will be jointly produced by Dil Raju and Shirish under the banner of Sri Venkateswara Creations.

Moderna says its Covid-19 shot works in kids as young as 12 – STAT

Moderna said Tuesday its COVID-19 vaccine strongly protects kids as young as 12, a step that could put the shot on track to become the second option for that age group in the U.S.

With global vaccine supplies still tight, much of the world is struggling to vaccinate adults in the quest to end the pandemic. But earlier this month, the U.S. and Canada authorized another vaccine — the shot made by Pfizer and BioNTech — to be used starting at age 12.

Moderna aims to be next in line, saying it will submit its teen data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other global regulators early next month.

The company studied more than 3,700 12- to 17-year-olds. Preliminary findings showed the vaccine triggered the same signs of immune protection in kids as it does in adults, and the same kind of temporary side effects such as sore arms, headache and fatigue.

There were no COVID-19 diagnoses in those given two doses of the Moderna vaccine compared with four cases among kids given dummy shots. In a press release, the company also said the vaccine appeared 93% effective two weeks after the first dose.

While children are far less likely than adults to get seriously ill from COVID-19, they represent about 14% of the nation’s coronavirus cases. At least 316 have died in the U.S. alone, according to a tally by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

With plenty of vaccine supply in the U.S., younger teens flocked to get Pfizer’s shot in the days after FDA opened it to them, part of a push to get as many kids vaccinated as possible before the next school year.

Both Pfizer and Moderna have begun testing in even younger children, from age 11 down to 6-month-old babies. This testing is more complex: Teens receive the same dose as adults, but researchers are testing smaller doses in younger children. Experts hope to see some results in the fall.
