Jared Leto: Matthew McConaughey convinced me to act again

Jared Leto has credited Matthew McConaughey with inspiring him to act again, insisting the opportunity to join the Texan star in new drama “The Dallas Buyers Club” was too good an opportunity to miss.

Bing: See the trailer for ‘The Dallas Buyers Club’

The rocker/actor put his Hollywood career on the backburner while concentrating on his band 30 Seconds to Mars, and he recently revealed he planned to turn down the part of an HIV-positive cross-dresser. However, Leto now admits he signed up for the role after learning he would be working with McConaughey.

Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival, Leto explains, “It’s been five years (since my last film), but who’s counting? How can you miss me if I never leave, right? It was an amazing role, it was an amazing script … but I have to say, Matthew McConaughey is doing something spectacular with his life (and) his career. I wanted to be a part of that.”

Said Leto: “He’s doing the most incredibly inspiring work and I said, ‘If he’s willing to walk down this path, I have to get in the ring with him.’ That’s someone I have to dance with, am I right?”

Celebrities turn low key at NY Fashion Week

NEW YORK (AP) — Fashion insiders love to dress celebrities for big splashy Hollywood events, but they don’t necessarily want them at their own big splashy event: New York Fashion Week.

As spring previews slid into their fifth day, there has been some departure from the approach of putting boldface names in the coveted front row seats — and letting them steal some of the thunder from designers.

Oscar de la Renta limited his guest list, telling Women’s Wear Daily he was focusing on the people who had a real reason to be there, not “20 million people with zero connection to the clothes.” Tommy Hilfiger, once a celebrity magnet, said Monday that he wanted to return the focus to fashion.

Bing: The latest dispatches from Fashion Week

“I don’t like the drama in the fashion world. I like to do our thing without the drama,” he said backstage before his show.

There were still plenty of tabloid favorites — Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Lindsay Lohan have all made appearances — but they are more of a rarity than in years past, when they were invited en masse and thrown in front of paparazzi. How many people were really focused on the Herve Leger dresses on the runway Saturday when Nicki Minaj was right in front of them? (At least designer Max Azria was smart enough to put her in a new look from the spring collection.)

For the celebrities-turned-designers, it’s an even more careful dance. Katie Holmes, Victoria Beckham, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have all made long-term commitments to their fashion brands, slowly and delicately courting editors, stylists and retailers, instead of the paparazzi.

The Olsen twins moved their show from the Upper East Side to Soho downtown, far from the Lincoln Center tents, for their intimate unveiling.

Holmes and her partner, Jeanne Yang, invited no photographers — save one house cameraman — and only a couple of dozen top-tier editors and stylists for their show in a Chelsea gallery space close to the Garment District.

“It’s in my neighborhood. We walked here,” Holmes said.

TOMMY HILFIGER

Hilfiger filled a hangarlike venue on the West Side with sand and built his own boardwalk for surf-inspired styles.

“It’s really from the inspiration of Melrose to Malibu, and we brought Malibu to New York,” he said. “It’s about surfing and skating, sporty lifestyles, about color and the modern cool woman.”

There were colorblocked neoprene pieces — one of the biggest trends emerging from these seasonal previews — shown alongside denim and olive surplus styles.

Top model Joan Smalls had on a leather basketball jersey (No. 1, of course) paired with denim track pants.

___

THE ROW

The Olsens draped their gallery space with gauzy fabric for a look at clothes that seemed what a woman of means, but one who shuns the spotlight or fuss, would take on safari.

Wonder if the twins are planning a trip?

Two years ago, they won the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s top prize in womenswear and continue with the aesthetic that got them there. Shapes are long, lean and worn in lots of layers. Some of the clothes were purposely crinkled or with unfinished edges.

___

CAROLINA HERRERA

Herrera was among the exceptions to that low-key celebrity thing.

Her guests included Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci, the RB singer Ne-Yo, “Mad Men” actress Christina Hendricks and “Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery.

The packed crowd was regaled with elegant, ethereal gowns featuring geometric motifs enhanced by the layering of fabrics, which gave them the appearance of constant movement.

The inspiration? Kinetic art, or art in motion. “It’s the reaction of two layers — I find that this is totally kinetic,” Herrera said in a post-show interview, as well-wishers crushed around her. “It creates its own movement.”

___

HOLMES YANG

Holmes and Yang said their spring collection is about wearable elegance.

The mix they offered included a black silk V-neck gown with leather trim and a khaki camp-style shirtdress with a lace-up V at the neck.

The duo said they wanted to start their business quietly, grow slowly and do it right.

___

DONNA KARAN

The best of Karan’s spring collection was classic Karan, day-to-night stretch dresses (especially a one-shouldered, block-print number), coats that you wouldn’t want to take off, a man-tailored shirt definitively cut for a woman.

There were rich colors of tobacco and terra-cotta, and it seemed navy was Karan’s new black.

She opened the show with a series of indigo-colored viscose dresses. There also were beaded, wrap miniskirts with silk tunics barely tucked into the waistband.

But the key piece was the scarf skirt, which was light and had a lot of life.

“It was all about a search for a scarf. I think as signature to what Donna Karan is about is a bodysuit and a scarf and the tailoring,” Karan said.

She had spied a scarf she fell in love with and it took her on a journey to India and she came back with a suitcase full of new ones.

“If somebody would say to me, ‘What’s the most important item to own?’ It’s a scarf … because it covers up what you don’t want to show, and it shows what you want to show, and it just flows with the body.”

3.1 PHILLIP LIM

Lim said he was inspired to explore “different terrains, landscapes and rocks” in search of “something stable, sturdy and elementary to stand on.”

What helped? Salt crystals that crunch underfoot at his 3.1 Phillip Lim show.

The designer proved better than many in expressing his theme clearly and forcefully, best of all in the embroidery that evoked intricate and colorful rock formations.

It’s been a busy few months for Lim. In June, he won a Council of Fashion Designers of America award for his accessories. And on Sept. 15 he debuts his new line for Target — what he calls a “modern-day wardrobe for citizens on the go.”

___

ZAC POSEN

Zac Posen started draping his collection almost three months ago, and he was still doing it right up until the first look appeared on the runway.

It wasn’t a last-minute rush — in fact, everything seemed incredibly quiet just before his show on Sunday night. It simply takes that long to hand-pleat chiffon and hand-paint organza. “Given the intensity of this collection, it has all been very calm,” he said.

Posen even took a nap for almost an hour after the final sound and lighting checks, and before receiving a pep talk by phone from friend Naomi Campbell.

Models are important to Posen: Their loyalty and enthusiasm launched his career. Coco Rocha wore the first look on the catwalk, a pale-pink chiffon cape dress. Lindsey Wixson wore an ivory-colored bustier gown and go-to Posen muse Crystal Renn wore a lemon-colored frock with a wisteria print and fluttery short sleeves.

___

DEREK LAM

Derek Lam’s clothes always have a pronounced urban edge. For spring, he wanted to be playful, too.

His show had some unexpected nuances such as sparks of bright yellow, breaking up his usual crisp color palette of black, white and navy. An elegant yellow crepe strapless gown came in sharp contrast to the series of bold plaids, in black and white or blue and white, that began the show.

“My work has always been rooted in American sportswear. So I’m just loosening it up, relaxing a bit,” Lam said.

___

EDUN

There was more than big, bold graphics on display at Edun, the label founded by rocker Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson.

There was also the debut of a new designer — Danielle Sherman — and a front row where Bono and Hewson were joined by Trudie Styler, Gina Gershon and Christy Turlington Burns.

The collection was heavy on black-and-white pieces in bold geometric prints: skirts, coats, roomy pants and short tanks over longer, flowing tops. There were also some large, soft gray sweaters, sportswear in bright orange and leather pieces in white, black and a rich cayenne color.

Edun was founded in 2005 by Bono and Hewson to promote change through a trading relationship with Africa. Many of its garments are traditionally produced in Africa or made from fabrics sourced there.

___

BAND OF OUTSIDERS

Los Angeles-based designer Scott Sternberg really, really likes “The House of the Rising Sun.” The song played many times both before and during his show.

But the collection was inspired by much more than a 1960s vibe, Sternberg said afterward.

“Hollywood noir, sirens, bohemia, and Robert Altman’s ‘The Long Goodbye,'” he said, listing the themes that guided him. “All mixed with something super-sporty, fresh and pure.”

Translated into clothes, that meant a lot of very comfortable, sporty yet urban looks which would fit right in in Los Angeles — indeed, the Hollywood sign, or actually the back of it, figured prominently into Sternberg’s stylish visuals. But they’d work for a young customer pretty much anywhere else, too, in these informal days.

Italian documentary wins Golden Venice

VENICE, Italy (AP) — The Italian film “Sacro GRA,” a documentary about life on the highway that circles Rome by director Gianfranco Rosi, has won the Golden Lion for best film at the 70th edition of the Venice Film Festival.

The Silver Lion for best director went to Alexandros Avranas of Greece for “Miss Violence” a disturbing look at sexual violence and abuse perpetrated by a grandfather.

Greek actor Themis Panou won the best actor prize for his leading role in “Miss Violence,” and Italian actress Elena Cotta won best actress for her role in Emma Dante’s “A Street in Palermo” during Saturday’s ceremony.

Bernardo Bertolucci presided over the jury that decided the prizes capping the 11-day festival. This year was the first time documentaries were included in the main competition.

Brad Pitt attends premiere for ’12 Years a Slave’

TORONTO (AP) — The upcoming film “12 Years a Slave” is a harrowing look at slavery, but its stars, including Brad Pitt, say it’s a subject that needs to be explored more on the big screen.

Search: Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie wedding rumors

Pitt, whose Plan B company produced the film about a free man sold into slavery, was at its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Pitt said he was first drawn to the film because of its British director, Steve McQueen, known for such films as “Hunger” and “Shame.”

“We started talking to him about what he most wanted to do next and he asked the question, asked the question that no American asked, why aren’t there more films about slavery?” Pitt recalled on Friday night. “And that’s what he wanted to do. And that’s where it started and that’s what led us here tonight.”

British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor is earning rave reviews for his performance as Solomon Northup, a New York violinist kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841.

The film, which is already generating Oscar buzz, is based on Northup’s memoirs and unflinchingly depicts the physical and psychological trauma he endured during his dozen years as a slave. Pitt plays Canadian carpenter and abolitionist Samuel Bass, who helps Northup gain his freedom.

“It means everything,” said Ejiofor about his personal attachment to the film. “I was shooting a film called ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ in Nigeria, we were down in Calabar, and I knew I was traveling over to Louisiana the next day to start on this movie. So on the last day I popped into the slave museum in Calabar … because I was aware that not only were a lot of people taken out from there in West Africa, but a lot of those ships ended up in New Orleans, into Louisiana, and that I was going to be traveling on that same journey obviously by different means.

“A lot of my family are out in the east of Nigeria, so I felt very connected to it all. And then to get out to Louisiana and spend time on the plantations was an amazing experience to me and to tell such a rich story with an incredible array of people was very powerful.”

Alfre Woodard, who makes a brief appearance in the film as Mistress Harriet Shaw, spoke about her pride in playing a small part in bringing the story to life on the big screen.

“This picture is long overdue and it’s a gift that Steve McQueen has crafted and brought to us,” she said. “I think people are going to be so excited. Yes it’s a tough subject because most people don’t want to think about slavery, but I think that leaves a void in us individually, personally and collectively.”

Some critics have already questioned whether the film is too graphic to find a large audience, but Sarah Paulson, who plays the wife of a plantation owner, was quick to dismiss that argument.

“To not watch something simply because it’s painful seems irresponsible to me, and dumb,” she said. “I feel like as a culture we so want everything to be watered down so it’s easily ingestible, digestible, and that’s just not what parts of our story as a nation is, as a country is. I sort of feel like it’s important to tell the truth in your art, and this movie is a great truth teller and that may not always be comfortable, but I think it’s very necessary.”

Actor Michael Fassbender plays the vicious plantation owner married to Paulson. The film marks the third time he’s worked with director McQueen (‘Hunger,’ ‘Shame’).

“Hopefully it touches people and they sort of walk away and discuss things with each other,” he said. “I don’t know the answers, but maybe it poses some questions.”

“12 Years a Slave” opens around the world in October.

Oscar winner Christopher Plummer is set to join John Travolta and The Sheridan in heist film “The Forger,” which is being produced and co-financed by Code Entertainment and The Solution Entertainment Group.

Find: Travolta divorce rumors | Week in Quotes

Philip Martin is directing the film, which will be produced by Code’s Al Corley, Bart Rosenblatt and Eugene Musso, along with Prospect Park’s Rob Carliner. Jonathan Dana and Randi Michel will executive produce alongside The Solution’s Lisa Wilson and Myles Nestel. Anson Downes and Linda Favila will serve as co-executive producers.

Written by Richard D’Ovidio (“The Call”), “The Forger” follows former child art prodigy and petty thief Ray Cutter (Travolta), who arranges to buy his way out of prison so he can spend time with his ailing son (Sheridan). Ray and his father (Plummer) must come together to carry out one last big job for the syndicate that financed his early release.

The project is currently in pre-production, as principal photography will start in October in Boston.

The Solution is handling international sales in Toronto, with WME Global and ICM Partners handling domestic sales.

“Christopher Plummer brings elegance and class to an already astonishing cast. ‘The Forger’ team welcomes Mr. Plummer with open arms and feels truly fortunate to include his enormous talents,” said Corley.

“We feel privileged to have the legendary Christopher Plummer joining the cast of ‘The Forger.’ His extraordinary presence on screen is a welcome addition to the great cast featuring John Travolta and Tye Sheridan,” said Wilson and Nestel.

Plummer, who just won an Oscar for his supporting performance in “Beginners,” is currently filming “Imagine” with Al Pacino. He’s repped by ICM Partners and The Pitt Group.

The cast of David Fincher‘s “Gone Girl” just gets more interesting, as Tyler Perry, Neil Patrick Harris, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit and Carrie Coon are set to join Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck in 20th Century Fox and New Regency’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.

Bing: Tyler Perry lawsuit

Perry will play Tanner Bolt, a defense attorney who represents Affleck’s character after he’s implicated in the disappearance of his wife (Pike).

Coon will play Affleck’s twin sister, while Dickens (“Treme) and Fugit (“Thanks For Sharing”) will play detectives who investigate the cast.

Fincher reportedly cast Perry after seeing him in “Alex Cross,” which is ironic given the film’s 12 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where most critics directed their ire towards Perry’s performance as the title character. That said, if any filmmaker deserves the benefit of the doubt when it comes to casting, it’s Fincher, who has a strong eye for matching actors with material.

Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea are producing “Gone Girl” through their Pacific Standard banner along with Leslie Dixon.

Production will begin this fall, before Affleck begins filming Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” sequel.

Naomi Watts’ ‘Diana’ attacked by British critics

©AP/ Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts’ new royal biopic “Diana” has come under fire from movie critics in Britain, who have labeled the film “horrendous,” “cheerless” and “cheap.”

Find: The latest on Diana’s death conspiracy

In the new picture, which premiered in the U.K. on Thursday night, the British-born actress portrays Princess Diana in the last years of her life before her death in a car crash in Paris in 1997. The film received a slew of scathing reviews from Britain’s critics in the aftermath of the premiere, with many questioning the movie’s historical accuracy and even slamming the story as a “soap opera” reimagining of the princess’ life.

Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian gave “Diana” just one star out of a possible five and heavily criticized the film, writing, “Poor Princess Diana. I hesitate to use the term ‘car crash cinema.’ But the awful truth is that, 16 years after that terrible day in 1997, she has died another awful death … The movie isn’t so much Mills Boon as a horrendous Fifty Shades of Grey with the SM sex taken out — and replaced with paparazzi intrusion and misunderstood charity work … The moment anyone, anyone at all, opens their mouth, we are in TV-movie-land, soap-land.”

The Daily Telegraph’s David Gritten concurs, singling out the movie’s references to the Paris car crash as a “redundant piece of lurid sensationalism,” adding of the film, “What’s the point of ‘Diana’? It’s hardly fascinating. It doesn’t offer new facts about the princess’s life. And it certainly doesn’t explain her complexity or contradictions. That would take a different, better film altogether.”

David Edwards of the Daily Mirror adds, “‘Diana’ can only be described as a fabulously awful film. The queen of hearts has been recast as a sad-sack singleton that even Bridget Jones would cross the street to avoid … The film’s a cheap and cheerless effort … Director Oliver Hirschbiegel … should know better … Despite a peroxide hair job, (Watts) looks, sounds and acts nothing like the princess of Wales. Wesley Snipes in a blond wig would be more convincing.” Christopher Tookey of the Daily Mail also gave the film just one star out of five, branding it “tedious,” “slow” and “terribly, terribly dull.”

The film has also been criticized by the princess’ former lover Dr. Hasnat Khan, who is played by “Lost” star Naveen Andrews. He insists the story is based on “hypotheses and gossip” and is “completely wrong.”

Angelina Jolie, Steve Martin, Angela Lansbury and Piero Tosi to get honorary Oscars

LOS ANGELES (AP) — And the honorary Academy Awards go to … Angelina Jolie, Steve Martin, Angela Lansbury and Italian costume designer Piero Tosi.

The film academy announced Thursday that Jolie will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, while Martin, Lansbury and Tosi will get Oscars recognizing their career achievements.

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said the Governors Awards “pay tribute to individuals who’ve made indelible contributions in their respective fields.”

Bing: Angelina Jolie as ‘Maleficent’

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors voted on the recipients of its fifth annual awards earlier this week. The honorary Oscars will be presented at an untelevised ceremony on Nov. 16 at Hollywood and Highland’s Ray Dolby Ballroom.

Martin said on Twitter he’s proud to receive the award, calling it “a salute to comedy and all the great people I’ve worked with.” The 68-year-old entertainer has written and starred in dozens of movies, hosted the Oscar ceremony three times and was nominated for his 1977 short film, “The Absent-Minded Waiter.”

Lansbury, 87, has been nominated for three supporting-actress Oscars during her 65-year career. Her most recent role was in 2011’s “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.”

Tosi’s costume designs have earned him five Oscar nominations, most recently for 1979’s “Las Cage aux Folles” and 1982’s “La Traviata.”

The Hersholt Award is presented periodically to a film industry member for exemplary humanitarian work. Jolie, who was nominated for her leading performance in 2008’s “Changeling” and won for her supporting role in 1999’s “Girl, Interrupted,” serves as a special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The 38-year-old actress and filmmaker has also lobbied Congress to support programs protecting women and children.

Previous recipients of the Hersholt Award include Jeffrey Katzenberg, Oprah Winfrey, Sherry Lansing, Jerry Lewis and Elizabeth Taylor.

Vin Diesel on Batman casting: Leave Ben Affleck alone

Vin Diesel has urged critics to give Ben Affleck a break after they took aim at his casting as Batman in the “Man of Steel” sequel.

Bing: Lex Luthor to be in ‘Man of Steel’ sequel?

Diesel, who passed on the lead role in “Daredevil” before Affleck took it on, insists he doesn’t care who plays the Caped Crusader, but the Oscar winner will be more than able to handle the role.

He tells the Huffington Post, “Let him live is my motto, let him live. Let Warner Bros. hire whoever they want, let Ben do whatever he wants. He got an Oscar, give him some credit. Leave him alone.”
