Weekend Box Office: Wild Things are in!

As to be expected Where the Wild Things are dominated the box office this weekend. There was little doubt that this adorable and moving childrens movie would have people flocking to the theaters. But what may be surprising is that Law Abiding Citizen took second place. This movie was definitely one for the guys with plenty action and crime drama to go around, but over all the plot just seemed too unrealistic to strike a chord with viewers…but the box office proved that theory wrong. Paranormal Activity continues to do well in the box office and is considered to be one of the scariest and most realistic ghost movies you’ll see this year and maybe even any year, and for an independent film that is certainly high praise. Couples Retreat dropped to fourth this week but still made a good return at the box office perhaps because it remains the token chick flick/date movie. The top five is rounded out by The Stepfather. This weekend may have been the first time in quite a while that all of the opening movies appeared in the top five. Perhaps this is a sign of good things to come.

Weekend Box Office: Critics hated it, but the moviegoers came anyway.

Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat which was widely seen by critics as, well, “rotten” has taken the box office by storm.  Surprisingly it more than doubled the second place movie, Zombieland. This is a big surprise because even though I saw Couples Retreat being a fun and laid back comedy,with all the buzz that Zombieland has been generating I thought it would keep the top spot. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs continues to hang on taking the third slot, which after four weeks on the box office is not a bad place to be. The sweet and funny cartoon even beat out the 3D double feature of Toy Story 1 and 2. Paranormal Activity is at number 5 which is a great place for an indedependent film. Though it has been out in theaters for 3 weeks this is the first time it is starting to enjoy a wide release so we may even see it go up next week. The bottom five of the box office are all relatively close together and seem to be on their way out, we’ll see what next week’s new releases do.

Weekend Box Office: Zombies take over

Zombieland takes the top slot this weekend as was expected. This zombie filled comedy has a witty script and great acting. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs takes a distant second but still a great showing considering it is now in its third week. The Toy Story/Toy Story 2 double feature takes the third slot which only shows that when it does get released Toy Story 3 is going to make huge waves in the box office. The Invention of Lying takes the number 4 slot which is a somewhat disappointing showing considering that the movie surprisingly original and well done. Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It, takes the number 6 slot following Surrogates and Capitalism. Despite its celebrity director, Whip It is unlikely to stay very long in the box office top ten as it is somewhat predictable and cannot compete with its original and star-studded competitors.  Expect to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Zombieland, and The Invention of Lying in the top slots again next week.

Weekend Box Office: “Meatballs” Takes the Cake again

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs tops the box office for the second week in a row beating out Bruce Willis and the beloved musical Fame, a very tough feat for any movie but especially for a children’s movie. This definitely shows that the movie was underestimated and definitely has everything going for it as it took in nearly $10 million more than Surrogates starring Bruce Willis. Fame took third which is a somewhat disappointing showing for the musical but considering the competition is relatively understandable. The Informant! and Tyler Perry both drop two spots this week but still beat out Pandorum. Pandorum has recieved terrible reviews from critics and movie-goers alike who find it overall a boring addition to the Sci-Fi genre. Inglourious Basterds is the longest running film in the top ten, at it’s 6th week it continue to beat out newer movies but next weekend should see it fall out of the top ten.

Weekend Box Office: Clear skies for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

The beloved children’s story has become a beloved children’s movie as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs more than triples the return of the number 2 movie with $30 million for the weekend. The Informant! also opened this weekend and got over $10 million for the weekend narrowly beating out Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself. The other two movie openers this weekend also made the top five with Love Happens taking number 4 and Jennifer’s Body taking number 5. This shows that people have been hungry for new movies and entertainment. This weekend had some pretty good movies coming out and the box office shows this. Inglourious Basterds remains in the top ten for the fifth week in a row which shows that people are embracing Tarentino’s new film as much as he does.

Weekend Box Office: Tyler Perry does anything but bad

I Can Do Bad All By Myself

This weekend Tyler Perry reigns supreme once again as I Can Do Bad All By Myself annihilates the competition for the top box office returns. This low budget movie more than doubled the weekend gross of its closest competitior. 9 took in only $10 million for the weekend which is a disappointing showing for this intriguing new film. The other new openings for the weekend, Sorority Row and Whiteout came in at 6 and 7. All About Steve takes fourth in what is the most surprisng movie of the weekend because it continues to hang on despite scathing reviews by both critics and audience goers alike. This perhaps shows the need for chick flick on the market or the staying power of Sandra Bullock. Tarentino’s swan song Inglourious Basterds continues to hold its own taking the number 3 slot.

Weekend Box Office: Final Destination continues to make the cut

The Final Destination

Final Destination tops the box office for the second week in a row barely beating out the romantic comedy All About Steve. In what is perhaps the most surprising part of the weekend box office, The Gamer takes fourth beneath Inglourious Basterds. Whether this is indication of how good Inglourious Basterds is or how possibly disappointing The Gamer is. District 9 rounds out the top five to no surprise. Julie & Julie remains in the top 10 at number seven beating out even G.I. Joe and Extract which was a new release this weekend. Julie & Julia continues to surprise with it’s continued success. Halloween II fails to hold on as well as its opening partner Final Destination, proving that even when two scary movies open together as the sole new releases, it does not mean that they are of equal quality. The Time Traveler’s Wife takes number 9, which is a decent showing for it’s fourth week and the movie is already close to turning a profit for the studio as it had nearly doubled it’s budget, so dvd sales will make this a very successful movie.

Weekend Box Office: Final Destination beats out Halloween.

The Final Destination

This weekend’s two horror movie openings, The Final Destination and Halloween II both fared relatively well. The Final Destination took first place with $28 million for the weekend, which comes largely from 3D sales.  Halloween II was knocked down another peg by Inglorious Basterds and wound up in 3rd with $17 million. The only other movie to open last weekend was Taking Woodstock and it took a dismal 9th place with only $3.7 million. This is bad news for  Focus studios who spent $30 million to produce the film. G.I. Joe and Julie & Julia continue to hold on after four weeks, undoubtedly do to the action packed fun of G.I. Joe and the magnificent talent of Meryl Streep. Shorts and G-Force are the last of the summer kids films to remain in the top ten, it seems the kids movies are laying down the gauntlet to the more mature movies as Fall comes around.

Weekend Box Office: Humans Welcome the Aliens

District 9

It probably comes as no surprise that District 9 beat out all of it’s competition. The amount of hype that was generated for that movie has not been seen since Cloverfield. The movie took in over $37 million this weekend. This number is even more astounding when you realize that the movie only cost $30 million to make, just one more weekend like that and the production studio will already be ahead. Which is a much better position than G.I. Joe, which has dropped to the number 2 slot, pulling in $22 million this weekend, bringing it’s total to $98 million a fa cry from recouping it’s $175 million production costs. The Time Traveler’s Wife came in at number 3 with $19 million, not a bad showing considering it is solely a chick flick and the tough competition it faced. Harry Potter continues it’s descent out of theaters, coming it at number 7 with $5 million, making it’s grand total gross over $280 million.

Weekend Box Office: G.I Joe breaks out of the Mold

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra

After a few weeks of relatively disappointing Box Office returns G.I Joe: Rise of the Cobra brought fans of all ages to the theaters. The long awaited movie (after all for over 40 years there hasn’t been a cooler action figure than G.I. Joe) pulled in massive crowds to make over $56 million. Julie & Julia came in a distant second at $20 million, which isn’t surprising for a movie with talent like Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci. G-Force once again beat out Harry Potter. It seems like the wizard has already started on his descent out of theaters which seems surprising considering the run of movies like The Hangover and Ice Age, both of which dropped out of the top ten for the first time this week.
