The Elephant House in Edinburgh suffered smoke and water damage after a blaze broke out at the patisserie next door on Tuesday.

The Elephant House is a regular stop for Harry Potter fans and long bore a sign declaring itself as the “birthplace” of the fictional young wizard.
Rowling has disputed that, saying she began writing the magical stories before she moved to Edinburgh. But she confirmed she frequented the cafe while penning some of the seven-book series.

The Patisserie Valerie, where Tuesday’s fire started, also was heavily damaged. Firefighters remained at the scene in Edinburgh’s Old Town with the street closed off into Wednesday.

Harry Potter, ‘Friends’ may fall victim to Hungary’s anti-LGBT law: broadcaster
The largest broadcasters in Hungary criticized a new law banning the “display and promotion of homosexuality” among under-18s as a threat to freedom of expression, and one said it could impact showings of some Harry Potter films and classic TV shows. Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s nationalist government pushed the law through parliament on Tuesday despite criticism from rights groups and the European Union, which said it could result in a loss of development funds for Hungary.
Norway wealth fund backs Vivendi’s plan to spin off Universal Music
Norway’s $1.35 trillion sovereign wealth fund, the world’s largest, said on Thursday it would support Vivendi’s plan to spin-off Universal Music, including the distribution-in-kind of shares to Vivendi shareholders. Separately, the fund will vote against the compensations of Vivendi’s chairman, chief executive, top management, and board members in line with its policy of having executive pay that is transparent and aligned with long-term shareholder interests.

The album is described as “a powerful, inclusive musical message of love and togetherness”.

Miley Cyrus can use name as trademark in Europe after long-running row
U.S. pop star Miley Cyrus has won the right to use her name as a trademark on a wide range of products in the European Union, after Europe’s top court on Wednesday annulled a decision by the EU patent office to limit the scope of her brand. The case dates to 2014 when the 28-year-old “Wrecking Ball” singer’s company Smiley Miley Inc. sought to trademark MILEY CYRUS with the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for audio and video discs, mobile phone cases, e-books, electronic board games, calendars, and other goods.

Free speech is in danger unless people speak up to defend figures such as JK Rowling, according to former Tory cabinet minister Dr Liam Fox.
Harry Potter author JK Rowling has come under fire for her stance on transgender people, with many critics calling the writer transphobic.

Dr Fox said freedom of speech was ‘essential to the full development of each individual’
In July last year, she drew criticism after describing hormones and surgery for transgender people as “a new kind of conversion therapy”.
In a speech to the Adam Smith Institute, a generally conservative-leaning think tank, Dr Liam Fox said that technologies like social media posed a threat to the freedom of speech, and said it must be addressed by the government and wider societies.
Talking specifically about the criticism JK Rowling received, Dr Fox said: “The sinister part was that it was not a counter-attack or riposte to the views she had posted but an attempt to delegitimise her and thus her intervention.
“All of us, from whatever part of the political spectrum, must unite in making it abundantly clear that she is, absolutely, entitled to her views and to express them.
“Keeping our heads below the parapet can only result in more victims.”
He also said that he feels “guilty” for not defending the likes of Jo Brand, who joked about throwing acid on Nigel Farage, and Davina McCall, who drew controversy last weekend for suggesting the response to the killing of Sarah Everard was “fear mongering”.
Dr Fox had earlier written that freedom of speech was “essential to the full development of each individual and the precondition to enjoying a wider set of rights, from freedom of assembly to the freedom of the press”.
He continued: “An effective democratic society depends on voters developing informed opinions from free and open debate, and exercising their choices unhindered at the ballot box.

“A free press is a means of underpinning other human rights through the ability to expose abuses and persecution.”
Dr Fox, a former trade minister, called on the government – as well as the wider public – to defend freedom of speech, saying a failure to do so risked “the trampling of our values and one person fewer in the defensive line between ourselves and the mob”.
British actor Helen McCrory, who starred in the television show “Peaky Blinders” and the “Harry Potter” movies, has died, her husband said Friday. She was 52 and had been suffering from cancer.
Her husband, fellow actor Damian Lewis, said McCrory died “peacefully at home” after a “heroic battle with cancer.”
“She died as she lived. Fearlessly,” Lewis wrote on Twitter. “God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.”
McCrory was one of Britain’s most respected actors, making her mark by playing a succession of formidable and sometimes fearsome women.
She played the matriarch of a crime family on “Peaky Blinders” and the scheming Voldemort ally Narcissa Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” movies.
Onstage, her roles included the vengeful Greek heroine “Medea” at the National Theatre in 2014. At the same theater, she excelled as a woman caught between a dull husband and a feckless lover in Terence Rattigan’s “The Deep Blue Sea” in 2016.
While many performers struggle to find meaty female roles in film and television, McCrory played a string of them.
“Having said that, there are a lot of things I turn down,” she told The Associated Press in 2016, describing the sort of roles where “all your lines are ‘But what did you do at work?’ ‘That’s so clever, darling.’ ‘How did you do that?’ ‘And then what did you do?'”
“Of course, there’s so much sexism within the profession,” McCrory said. “But I think you approach it in different ways, and my approach is just to forge forward.”
In another blow to RSS fans everywhere, Digg announced that it would soon be shuttering Digg Reader.
As of March 26, the RSS service will no longer work on the web or in Digg’s mobile apps. The company didn’t say why it was closing the service, which it started in response to Google killing off its own RSS service in 2013.
Naturally, the news was pretty upsetting to Digg Reader fans who had turned to the service as a replacement for the once beloved Google Reader.
But if you’re one of the many folks still clinging to RSS feeds in 2018, you’re not entirely out of luck. There are a number of capable alternatives out there. Here are five of our favorites.

Feedly has long been a popular choice in the post-Google Reader internet. The service has both web and mobile versions, and an easy-to-use interface. It also has features that will appeal to power users, like filtering, shared collections, and integrations with third-party services like IFTTT (paying $5.41 for a pro subscription gets you even more advanced features).

One of a handful of replacement services recommended by the Digg Reader team, Inoreader also offers a great mix of features for casual and more advanced users. It has options to read on the web, iOS, and Android. It’s easy to move between your feeds on multiple devices, and features like offline folders mean you can read wherever you are.

If you’re an iOS and Mac user, then Feedbin may be a good option for you. Unlike some RSS apps, one of Feedbin’s main selling points is its elegant design. It’s not light on features, either. It has full-featured search, tagging, and sharing functionality, as well as an automated “actions” feature that helps you automatically sort articles in your feed. It’s not a free app, but at $5/month it’s a worthwhile investment for people who are serious about their RSS feeds.

Newsify is another great option for iOS users. Though it also has a web interface, Newsify’s best features are on its iOS app. It supports multiple accounts and syncs with your iCloud account, so everything stays up to date no matter how many devices you use. It also features offline reading and a darker-themed night mode for late-night reading.

For Android users who want something that comes pretty close to the old-school Google Reader experience, gReader definitely fits the bill. The Android app has a relatively simple interface that’s optimized for speed and ease of use. It supports offline reading and podcasts and has a variety of different color schemes to choose from. And if you prefer listening over reading, you’ll appreciate its text-to-voice feature. gReader doesn’t have its own web version, but it does sync to Feedly, which could be a good workaround.

The short answer: it depends.
The longer answer: if you visit a lot of websites on daily basis, or read a lot of weblogs (or “blogs”), a news reader can save you a lot of time. Sites like ABCNews.com, Salon, and the New York Times all have syndicated feeds.
Using a news reader to consume your web media means that you only need to visit a website when you read a story in your news reader that is of interest to you. You won’t have to visit many sites multiple times every day to see if there are updates; your news reader will do that for you and will let you know when there is a new story to be read!
So if you visit a lot of websites regularly, or want to be alerted automatically when your websites publishes a new story, using a news reader might make sense.
Some commonly used news readers are Feed Demon, Sharp Reader, and NewsGator (an Outlook plugin) for Windows, NetNewsWire and Shrook for Macs, and Bloglines.com for those who like web-based readers.
You can find even more news readers at itopik.com.

news feed) is a site’s syndicated news feed that you subscribe to using your news reader.

Syndication refers to the process that occurs when a publisher provides content in a form that can be consumed by software (like a news reader).
The concept is similar to email: your Yankees-hating buddy Bob (the publisher) writes you an email about Derek Jeter’s partying habits (the content). Your favorite email program (the software) receives the email, and probably alerts you with gentle “You’ve got mail!”
With a syndicated ESPN.com feed, it works like this: ESPN.com (the publisher) publishes a story about Peyton Manning and Steve McNair sharing the NFL MVP award (the content). Your favorite news reader (the software) sees that ESPN.com has published a new story, and probably alerts you with a flashing icon on your screen.

The last book was released in 2007 while the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was released in 2011.
Yet the wizarding world of Harry Potter remains one of the world’s most-loved fictional worlds with grown aldults still awaiting their letter from Hogwarts.
Many of us grew up alongside Harry, Ron and Hermione, glued to the books and eagerly awaiting the cinema releases, while younger generations are only just discovering the magical world beyond Platform 9 3/4.
Now, a new Harry Potter experience is opening in the UK this autumn, giving fans the chance to wander through the Forbidden Forest.
The new attraction will debut in the enchanting woodland at Arley Hall and Gardens in Cheshire, before heading over to Burbank in the US.
Potter fans will be able to wander down illuminated woodland paths inspired by the Forbidden Forest where they will discover a host of magical surprises along the way.
Mystical creatures from JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series will be lurking in the forest, including Hippogriffs, centaurs, unicorns and Nifflers, among others.
The night-time woodland experience, created by Warner Bros. Themed Entertainment, is suitable for the whole family to enjoy, with plenty to keep fans of all ages to see and do.
As well as seeing the forest come to life, visitors will be able to indulge in an array of tasty food and drinks at a seasonally themed village, and pick up some goodies at the on-site merchandise shop.
The trail follows a one-way route and is designed to be accessible to all visitors.
It will also be Covid secure and adhere to the latest government safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
Peter van Roden, senior vice president of Warner Bros. Themed Entertainment said the Forbidden Forest “offers fans a new way to enjoy some of the most iconic and magical wizarding world moments.
He added: “We’re thrilled to be working alongside Thinkwell to bring this incredible light trail to life at Arley Hall Gardens, a perfect location where the natural beauty of the forest trail and illuminated sets filled with familiar creatures from the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts series, will make for a magical experience for fans of all ages.”

Ticket prices will start from £19 per person and will be available to buy on Fever’s marketplace from 10am on Thursday 29 July.
Fans can sign up to the waiting list to receive early access to tickets and more information about the experience.
A diehard Harry Potter fan has taken their love of the franchise to new heights by recreating Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Valheim, and it’s surprisingly accurate.
Iron Gate Studios — the indie developer behind Valheim — recently asked players to share their “craziest” builds, and obviously, the submissions didn’t disappoint. From a full-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower to a near-perfect reconstruction of Winterfell from Game of Thrones, Valheim users proved they’re not lacking in creativity.
Share a picture of the craziest thing you have built! ????????
— Valheim (@Valheimgame) April 6, 2021
But although these builds are great, they simply don’t compare to Reddit user u/Zabore, who is building a whole damn Hogwarts.
Obviously, the project is still very much a work in progress, but it’s already super impressive, if I do say so myself.
For starters, we’ve got the quidditch pitch, which looks incredibly realistic.

Meanwhile, I can barely build a house in The Sims 4 without forgetting to add a roof. Seriously, look how good this is.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be Hogwarts without Hagrid’s hut. Again, the resemblance is uncanny.

And last, but certainly not least, we’ve got the Great Hall, which, like the name suggests, is pretty great.

The project is only just beginning and Zabore is keen to flesh out the rest of the Hogwarts campus, so here’s hoping they continue to keep us all updated on the now-viral Reddit thread.
Unfortunately, the game doesn’t currently allow you to build basements, so we’ll probably be waiting a while before they can put a troll in the dungeon.
Considering Valheim is about to launch the Hearth and Home expansion, which should make in-game builds significantly better, you can only assume Hogwarts will continue to flourish and grow in-game. But with no word on a release date for the expansion just yet, we’ll have to sit tight and admire everyone else’s great builds for a while longer.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go sit in the corner and feel bad about my own builds and how they will never compare to this.
Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, the upcoming card RPG from Warner Bros. and NetEase, is launching on September 9th in China. There’s no word as of yet on the official release date for Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, but here’s hoping it won’t be long now.
Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is an officially licensed card RPG mobile game that lets players step into the magical world of Hogwarts as a new student. As always, you’ll pick a House and begin your exhilarating adventure along with your other magically inclined companions at the school of witchcraft and wizardry. Of course, a school is a school, so you’ll have to learn magical lessons and see familiar faces from the beloved IP along the way.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened’s story is supposedly set after the Second Wizarding War, and you’ll have to boost your skills not just with spells but also with magical creatures to equip yourself for more challenging battles ahead. The owls of Hogwarts have your letter of acceptance – now all you have to do is to journey across The Black Lake and take your place in The Great Hall. You might even have to deal with Madam Hooch amid the roaring crowds in the stands during a friendly game of Quidditch. It also appears that you’ll encounter creatures from the Fantastic Beasts franchise based on promotional art online.
Speaking of the art, the visuals here just look absolutely stunning, by the way. The character designs are just top-notch – you can see what I mean by taking a peek at the embedded YouTube clip above for a little preview. You can also visit the official website to stay updated on all the latest developments.
