Warner Bros studio tour expands with DC Universe, Harry Potter

Burbank, Calif: Batman’s secret cave, Harry Potter’s cupboard under the stairs and the apartment from Friends are major centrepieces to the huge Warner Bros studio lot expansion.

Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood recently reopened more than a year after doors were shuttered because of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, attendees will have a chance to explore the studio’s nearly 100 years of television and filmmaking history, highlighting the DC Universe and Harry Potter.

A first-hand look took place a couple of days before the tour opened in late June at the Southern California studio, which now welcomes families with children ages five and older.

Warner Bros officials said the expansion — that includes a new building — took five years to develop in Burbank. Officials say the studio tour will follow all city, state, and federal COVID-19 safety protocols.

“One of the most incredible things about Warner Brothers is the incredible history of epic films that are legendary,” said Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, who helped reopen the tour.

Here are some of the tour’s key features:

Storytelling showcase

Selfie opportunities will be a plenty at the replicated, iconic “WB” water tower as attendees are able to walk along an aerial view of the sprawling studio lot. The walls are lined with mementos of the studio’s film, TV animation titles, dating back to 1923. Some of the highlights in this room include photos from classic films such as Casablanca and Little Caesar.

There is a dedicated wall area of the Oscar-winning film Million Dollar Baby and the boxing gloves worn by Hilary Swank. JR’ Ewing’s boots and hat from the television series Dallas are also on display. Several miniature soundstages with the words “PLEASE DO NOT SIT” are throughout the exhibit.

DC Universe

Step into the behind-the-scenes universe of DC superheroes and villains. One of the compelling aspects is the secret Batcave, where guests will find the authentic Batmobile from Tim Burton’s original Batman, the Tumbler from The Dark Knight and the Batwing from Batman v. Superman.

Costumes worn by Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and the Flash are on display. Other standouts include Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Jared Leto’s Joker costumes from Suicide Squad. Along with Christopher Reeve’s Superman costume, the exhibit has Michael Keaton’s suit from the 1989 film Batman and Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman costume from the classic 1970s television show.

In an interactive experience, visitors can touch the glowing Lasso of Hestia from Wonder Woman 1984.

Director of the recent Wonder Woman films, Patty Jenkins, said she enjoyed seeing the costumes worn from her movies along with the rest of the DC characters featured in the exhibit.

“For there to be a museum to celebrate, that seems like something that is so important,” she said. “Then to have things for my own films in there as well, it’s an incredible honour and a very surreal crossing of the line of those two things.”

Harry Potter Fantastic Beast

Create a photo opportunity inside Harry Potter’s cupboard under the stairs at 4 Privet Drive and understand the art of making potions on the re-created sets of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts.

Guests can sit underneath the Sorting Hat, which determines one’s Hogwarts house. And class is in session to learn about the unique creatures at Newt Scamander’s Shed of Magical Creatures.

“You get to experience the action, the magic and fun, and the props and costumes and the re-created sets,” said Bonnie Wright, who starred as Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter film series.

Friends Boutique

Stage 48: Script to Screen is home to the Friends boutique that will be accompanied by the expanded Central Perk Café. The area features re-created sets inspired by the show including Joey and Chandler’s apartment, Monica’s apartment and Central Perk. Some costumes worn by the cast and other props from the show are from the 25th anniversary in 2019. Monica’s famous door frame and a Friends reunion-inspired spirit jersey, coffee mugs along with souvenirs and collectibles are included.

Central Perk offers a New York deli-inspired menu that includes a special blend of Central Perk coffee, pizza wedges, corned beef melts and cold sandwiches.

“I don’t think people are going to want to leave,” said Maggie Wheeler, who played the recurring role of Janice on Friends. The hit TV series starred Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow.

“It feels like the show,” Wheeler continued. “It feels like memory lane. I think people are going to be really, really excited to walk through and spend time here.”

Celebrate awards season

The tour concludes with an exhibit spotlighting costumes and props, including the jersey worn by the late Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson in the film 42 and the miniature blimp from Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. The trombone that Robert Preston played in The Music Man is also on display.

Guests will have an opportunity to hold an authentic Oscar trophy. (Be sure to grasp with both hands. It’s heavy.)

Jamie Ballard Will Return to Title Role When London’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Reopens

Both parts of the award-winning production will resume performances at the Palace this fall.

Jamie Ballard, who first stepped into the title role of the West End production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in May 2018, will return to the part when the hit production resumes performances at the Palace Theatre October 14.

As previously announced, both parts of the award-winning production will be presented when the drama returns after over a year and a half of a shutdown due to the pandemic; the North American stagings (including the Broadway production, which resumes in November at the Lyric) will be presented as one show. Playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany, who conceived the story with original series author J.K. Rowling, have been at work on the condensed version as theatres remained dark.

Ballard will be joined by Susie Trayling as Ginny Potter, Dominic Short as Albus Potter, Thomas Aldridge as Ron Weasley, Michelle Gayle as Hermione Granger, Phoenix Edwards as Rose Granger-Weasley, Draco Malfoy as James Howard, and Luke Sumner as Scorpius Malfoy. Further casting will be announced.

The production received its world premiere in July 2016 at London’s Palace and went on to become the most awarded play in the history of the Olivier Awards, winning nine awards including Best New Play.

Based on an original story by Rowling, Thorne, and Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a new play by Thorne, directed by Tiffany with movement by Steven Hoggett, set by Christine Jones, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, music and arrangements by Imogen Heap, lighting by Neil Austin, sound by Gareth Fry, illusions and magic by Jamie Harrison, music supervision and arrangements by Martin Lowe, and casting by Julia Horan.

Helen McCrory, actress in ‘Peaky Blinders’ and Harry Potter films, dies at 52

By Kate Holton | Reuters

LONDON — Helen McCrory, the “beautiful and mighty” British actress known for playing steely female characters on stage and screen, has died of cancer at the age of 52, her husband, Damian Lewis, said Friday.

Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory, seen here in 2016, married in 2007. They had had two young children. (Anthony Harvey/Getty Images)

The shock announcement drew tributes from author JK Rowling, fellow actors including Michael Sheen and from the artistic director at London’s National Theatre who hailed McCrory as “unquestionably one of the great actors of her generation.”

On screen she starred as Narcissa Malfoy in Harry Potter films, as the matriarch of a crime family in “Peaky Blinders” and as the wife of former prime minister Tony Blair, Cherie.

On stage she appeared as Medea, Lady Macbeth and Hester Collyer in “The Deep Blue Sea.”

“I’m heartbroken to announce that after an heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family,” the “Homeland” actor Lewis said.

“She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we loved her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.”

The couple, who had two young children, married in 2007.

They had recently raised over £1 million ($1.38 million USD) to give health workers restaurant meals during the pandemic.

Sam Mendes, who directed McCrory in the James Bond film “Skyfall,” said she was an astonishing talent. “The film and theater world has lost a one-of-a-kind actress, and her family and friends have been robbed of an extraordinary, indomitable spirit,” he said.

Rufus Norris, artistic director at the National Theatre, said she had an incisive wit. “We are shattered and will miss her terribly,” he said.

‘Harry Potter’ series rumor shot down by HBO Max, Warner Bros.

Could “The Boy Who Lived” see new life — on the small screen?

Rumors swirled Monday that a “Harry Potter” TV series is in development at HBO Max. There have long been talks of a “Potter”-verse series, according to Variety, but there was zero info revealed about this one — including cast, writers, or even the time period.

When contacted by The Post, Warner Bros. and HBO Max released this killjoy joint statement: “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.”

That said, if something clandestine actually is in the works, it could be a redo of the “Harry Potter” books themselves, which came out between 1997 and 2007. After all, even with eight big-screen movie adaptations (grossing almost $8 billion worldwide), there’s plenty of material that was cut, such as a lot of the Marauder’s backstory, or Hermione’s house-elf crusade.

But a TV series could also easily be set in a different era in the rich “Harry Potter” world — after all, the spinoff movie franchise “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is set around World War II, several decades before the events of the series, when Dumbledore was young enough to be Jude Law. Harry’s parents’ generation is rife for a focus. A 1970s- and ’80s-era Hogwarts could be fascinating on-screen.

Would original cast members such as Daniel Radcliffe or Emma Watson be involved? Time will tell. There are also several scandals that might complicate that.

For one, author J.K. Rowling has come under fire lately for her controversial views on transgender people, which she outlined in a lengthy manifesto and could be an issue for the Potter series making a comeback. After a series of celebrity statements criticizing Rowling, “Harry Potter” headliner Radcliffe spoke out in support of the enduring franchise in June.

“To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you,” he said about Rowling’s statements.

The spinoff “Fantastic Beasts” franchise — which still has three more movies coming — has also not been without controversy, as star Johnny Depp exited the venture under a cloud of domestic violence allegations, which he has denied.

The “Potter” books have sold more than 500 million copies worldwide and remain a hit, so they could also be controversy-proof as a pop-culture juggernaut.

Fire damages self-described ‘birthplace’ of Harry Potter

LONDON – A cafe in Scotland’s capital where author J.K. Rowling wrote some of the Harry Potter books has been damaged in a fire.

The Elephant House in Edinburgh suffered smoke and water damage after a blaze broke out at the patisserie next door on Tuesday.

More than 60 firefighters and 12 fire engines were deployed to tackle the blaze. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said one of its crew members was taken to hospital as a precaution and later released.

Images showed the cafe with its front windows gone, a ruined interior and debris lying outside.

Owner David Taylor told the BBC he was “devastated” by the extensive damage to his business. He said the cafe would likely be closed for months for repairs.

The Elephant House is a regular stop for Harry Potter fans and long bore a sign declaring itself as the “birthplace” of the fictional young wizard.

Rowling has disputed that, saying she began writing the magical stories before she moved to Edinburgh. But she confirmed she frequented the cafe while penning some of the seven-book series.

The Patisserie Valerie, where Tuesday’s fire started, also was heavily damaged. Firefighters remained at the scene in Edinburgh’s Old Town with the street closed off into Wednesday.

All Eight ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Are Returning To HBO Max In September

Where to Stream:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Accio, HBO!

Starting September 1, all eight original Harry Potter films are returning to HBO Max, after leaving NBC Universal’s streamer Peacock last April.

The full lineup includes every adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original book series: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.

All eight films were available on HBO Max back when the streamer launched in May 2020, but streaming rights were only allotted for three months. The Potter octet streamed on Peacock from October 2020 to April 2021, and are now headed back to their original home. This news comes ahead of Sorcerer’s Stone‘s 20-year anniversary on November 14.

Other notable films headed to HBO Max in September include Mad Max: Fury Road, Mortal Kombat, News of the World, and Promising Young Woman.

As part of the streamer’s collaboration with Warner Bros., two new theatrical films will simultaneously debut on both HBO Max at no additional cost to subscribers: James Wan’s new horror film Malignant on the 18th, and Clint Eastwood’s Western drama Cry Macho.

A subscription to HBO Max’s Ad-Free plan costs $14.99 a month, and you can use the service on your computer or devices including Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Playstation 4, Samsung TV, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

OnePlus Watch Harry Potter edition to launch in “coming weeks” – Pocket

Why you can trust Pocket-lint

(Pocket-lint) – OnePlus is planning to release a limited edition Harry Potter version of its smartwatch in the “coming weeks”.

Likely called the OnePlus Watch Harry Potter Edition, the watch was teased at the end of the launch event for the standard model. Reference to it was also spotted in a teardown of the OnePlus Health app APK.

It will possibly retain many of the features of the existing OnePlus Watch, but come with exclusive watch faces and decals.

Some of the Potter-based faces have been posted by 91Mobiles, with themes based on each of the houses at Hogwarts – Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw – plus the Hogwarts banner and exterior shot.

There are few other details as yet. We do not know the launch date neither. There is a suggestion it could just be heading to the Indian market, however, although that would be a mistake given the enormous global fan base for everything Potter.

We’re pretty sure it’ll be very popular, that’s for sure.

The OnePlus Watch has a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a 454 x 454 pixel resolution.

Battery life is claimed to last up to 14 days between charges, with OnePlus opting for its own smartwatch platform rather than Google’s old or new Wear OS.

The standard edition costs £159 in the UK.
