Celebrate International Chess Day With Some Geektastic Chess Sets From The Noble Collection

International Chess Day was first celebrated in 1966, on July 20th, the same day the International Chess Federation was founded in 1924. It is celebrated in 178 countries, and in 2019 the UN General Assembly unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the day. International Chess Day is enjoyed by many of the 605 million regular chess players around the world.

Now you can join in on the celebration with some of the great geeky chess sets available from The Noble Collection. I recently received a few of their many licensed sets to share here with our readers. All of these sets, and more, can be found at The Noble Collection website.

Jurassic Park Chess Set

One of the most affordable of the licensed sets in The Noble Collection, the Jurassic Park set features 32 sculpted dinosaurs, a full graphic chess board, and retails for $49. It is available on Amazon or from The Noble Collection webstore.

The folding Jurassic Park board. Image by Paul Benson.

The board folds up to fit in the box, but lays nice and flat when open. It measures a roomy 18.5″ on each side, and features not just the Jurassic Park logo, but evocative graphic design.

The “black” chess pieces. Image by Paul Benson.

The pieces for both sides are dinosaurs, using various species to represent the different chess pieces. Fittingly, the Tyrannosaurus Rex is the king.

And so you don’t have to try and remember which dinosaur represents which piece, the backs of each of the bases has a picture of its corresponding standard chess piece.

The one chess piece you shouldn’t need a reminder about. Image by Paul Benson.

Even though the pieces are plastic, the sculpts are all nicely dynamic, and the set as a whole looks striking on the table.

Dinosaurs were probably never this strategic. Image by Paul Benson.

The Jurassic Park set is great for fans of the movie franchise, or just for lovers of dinosaurs. The fact that the playing pieces are plastic dinosaurs, along with the pictures of the chess pieces on their bases, also makes this a great set for children.

Star Trek Tridimensional Chess Set

If you’re a fan of Star Trek: The Original Series, you’re familiar with Spock’s favorite game, Tridimensional Chess. This set comes with 32 Diecast chess pieces, and translucent acrylic game boards. It retails for $145, and can be purchased on Amazon or from The Noble Collection Website.

It’s also the only set I received which came with an instruction manual (more on that in a moment).

This set comes nestled in styrofoam. Image by Paul Benson.

The board is multi-tiered, and in its entirety is approximately 13 inches tall.

The metal and acrylic base boards. Image by Paul Benson.

The top board belongs to black, and the bottom to white, with the middle being a neutral board. There are also 4 movable “attack boards” which can plug into any of the corners of those main boards.

One of the smaller attack boards. Image by Paul Benson.

Unsurprisingly, the setup for Tridimensional Chess is a little different from standard chess. Here’s what it looks like ready to play:

How the game looks at the start. Image by Paul Benson.

The diecast chess pieces come nestled in a black box bearing the Star Trek logo. The pieces have a good feel, and bear a close resemblance to those used in the television series. Some might say too close of a resemblance, as the king and queen are very similar in appearance, as are the bishops and pawns. But as this is a set based on an actual prop from the series, you definitely want an accurate representation of what appeared on screen.

A closer look at some of the pieces. Image by Paul Benson.

As I’d mentioned previously, the rules for Tridimensional Chess are quite different from a standard game of chess, hence the rulebook. I’m not going to go over all of them here, but both the pieces and the attack boards can move vertically as well as on a two-dimensional plane. If you’re interested in reading how to play Tridimensional Chess, you can find the tournament rules here.

An attack board moves along the black board. Image by Paul Benson.

The Tridimensional Chess set, needless to say, is perfect for fans of Star Trek. At a bare minimum, it’s a terrific prop to display in your home. By moving into three dimensions, the complexity of Tridimensional Chess has increased over its progenitor. You don’t have to be a Vulcan to play, but I definitely wouldn’t suggest the set for an introduction to how to play regular chess. You’d be best served having some solid experience in playing the original game before picking up this variant.

And don’t miss the Starfleet symbol on the base! Image by Paul Benson.

The Lord of the Rings Chess Set

The Noble Collection actually has two Lord of the Rings chess sets. There is a Battle for Middle Earth set, which retails for $49 and features detailed plastic pieces and a folding board. But if you’re a big Tolkien fan, and especially love the Peter Jackson trilogy of LOTR films, then the set you’re going to want for sure is The Lord of the Rings Chess Set. This amazing set has a display board with a sculpted map of Middle Earth visible underneath the playing surface, and pewter playing pieces in the likenesses of the actors from the films. But this level of detail doesn’t come cheap; The Lord of the Rings will set you back $495.

As opposed to the two previous sets I showed you, this one comes in a plain box. Inside that box, nestled in styrofoam you’ll find both the playing pieces, and the highly-detailed board.

The sculptural Lord of the Rings board. Image by Paul Benson.

There are so many gorgeous details on the board. I’ve put a few of them into a slideshow, so you can soak in all the touches that will make any Lord of the Rings fan happy:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Much like the Tridimensional Chess set, the chess pieces for this set come in a black box, but branded with the Lord of the Rings logo.

The pewter chess pieces. Image by Paul Benson.

Set up on the board, the pieces looks stunning, and feel like they’ve stepped right off the screen.

The Fellowship and allies. Image by Paul Benson.

For the Forces of Good, you have Gandalf as the king and Galadriel as the queen. Their counterparts on the Forces of Evil are Saruman and Lurtz.

The game’s kings and queens. Image by Paul Benson.

The only caveat I have with The Lord of the Rings Chess Set is that pewter is a soft metal. While the pieces were packed well, many of the swords had bent some during shipping. It’s easy enough to bend them back, but you do want to do so gently.

That quibble aside, The Lord of the Rings Chess Set is a gorgeous set that will look right at home in your living room as well as on your game table. And this is also an expandable chess set! There are character sets available from both The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Each of those sets retails for $109, and contains 12 characters. You can use the side niches of the board to display those additional characters, or the ones from the main set when you’re not playing.

The Noble Collection

Besides the ones I showed off, The Noble Collection has chess sets featuring Batman, Harry Potter, and Minions. Their sets range from smaller boxes like Jurassic Park, which you’ll put back onto your shelf or in the closet when you’re done, to big sets like The Lord of the Rings Chess Set, which is both a game and an artistic piece you’ll want to display. If you’re a chess player with geeky interests, there’s a lot to love in The Noble Collection’s chess offerings this International Chess Day.

Quidditch becomes quadball as sport distances itself from author JK Rowling

London: Quidditch, the sport inspired by the wizarding game in the Harry Potter books, will now be known as quadball, its governing bodies said, a name change meant in part to distance themselves from author J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender issues.

In a statement on its website on Wednesday, the International Quidditch Association (IQA) said it was joining US Quidditch and Major League Quidditch – now rebranded as US Quadball (USQ) and Major League Quadball – in adopting the new name after all three bodies had previously announced their decision to make the change.

At the time they cited two reasons: Rowling’s opinions on transgender matters which have caused controversy, and Warner Bros., which was behind the Harry Potter films, owning the trademark for “quidditch”, limiting the sport’s expansion.

In 2020, Rowling voiced her concerns over trans women being allowed access to female spaces, drawing praise from some women’s rights campaigners as well as accusations of transphobia, which the author has rejected, by trans activists.

Here’s which ‘Harry Potter’ character you are based on your zodiac sign

Magic exists if you know where to look for it!

Ever since the arrival of the iconic Harry Potter’ books and film series, the world has been enchanted with the wizarding world. As one of the most popular modern franchises on Earth created by J.K. Rowling, the narrative has expanded even more with a new trilogy, plays, games and more. Now with the arrival of the newest release, “Fantastic Beasts: the Secrets of Dumbledore,” hitting theaters April 15, 2022, the world is set to dive even further into the mythos!

To understand the complex characters in the series, The Post spoke exclusively with two of the rising voices in American geekdom: Paul Florez-Taylor—known as the Comic King—and Luke James— known as a Pop Media Maven. As a team, we put our heads together to create the definitive list of Harry Potter wizards and witches that align with astrology and the zodiac. Follow the Comic King and Luke James for everything that’s hot in geekdom!

Muggles, beware, this list is only for true die-hard fans of the series! Within the halls of Hogwarts and the land beyond, each character plays a significant role in the world of Harry Potter.  Find out which character aligns perfectly with your zodiac sign!

ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19): Draco Malfoy

Draco Malfoy embodies an Aries.
Warner Bros

What makes Draco Malfoy a force to be reckoned with is his competitive and bold nature. From the second he is introduced as an archnemesis in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, we know Harry will need to bring his A-game to Hogwarts because Draco is emblematic of the Aries spirit: ambitious and unyielding. Despite being raised in an aristocratic, dark wizard environment, he still remains passionate and fiery.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20): Hagrid

Hagrid is the perfect character for Taurus.
Warner Bros

Committed, nurturing and grounded. Is it any wonder that Hagrid embodies all of Taurus’s earthy qualities? Harry would not have been able to grow had it not been for Hagrid’s everlasting dedication to his young charge and the wisdom his soul emanated. Hagrid is also as stubborn and loyal as they come—even being so devoted to Hogwarts and working for them despite not even finishing his proper schooling after his expulsion in his third year.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20): Ron Weasley

Ronald Weasley represents Gemini.
Warner Bros

Rupert Grint’s performance as Ron Weasley was so great because of the strength and vulnerability he brought to the role. Much like Geminis, Ron is the perfect best friend to embark on adventures with because he is mischievous, funny and courageous.  Ron Weasley will also never hesitate to vocalize his opinions when he discusses anything with the trio. Geminis, like Ron, rely greatly on communication and telling their point of view.

CANCER (JUNE 21 – JULY 22): Professor McGonagall

Professor McGonagall harnesses the energy of Cancer.
Warner Bros.

If we must go into a fight to the death at the Astronomy Tower, we want Professor McGonagall by our side. Loyal, maternal and intuitive, she will stand her ground until all those in her tribe are protected and safe from Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Professor McGonagall has shown on multiple occasions that she remains immensely protective towards Harry and the rest of the students at Hogwarts. She will stop at nothing to safeguard those under her wing.

LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22): Harry Potter

Harry Potter is a Leo.
Warner Bros.

The titular hero of the franchise with a fiery and adventurous spirit! He is destined to usher in a new era at Hogwarts and avenge the wrong brought to his family. Even though Harry has every obstacle before him, he rises to the occasion like a true Leo and brings hope for a better tomorrow. Like Harry, Leos are natural leaders and have the willpower and drive to stand up to anything that comes in their way.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22): Hermione

Hermione Granger slays like a Virgo.
Warner Bros.

No one embodies Virgo’s resourceful and brilliant nature in the Harry Potter franchise better than Hermione. If you’re embarking on a journey to destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes, you need Emma Watson’s no BS and encyclopedic mind by your side. Harry and Ron would not have survived day one at Hogwarts if it weren’t for her. With the two boys by her side, Hermione is comparatively the most practical and level headed out of the trio, using more logic and rationale rather than luck or skill (even though Hermione is immensely skillful and powerful).

Astrology 101: Your guide to the stars

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22): Dobby

Dobby is linked to Libra.
Warner Bros.

Bashful and kindhearted, Dobby survived life with the Malfoys because his spirit is stronger than his ego. There is a reason we all cried when he died by Bellatrix’s knife—because he was the beating heart of the story. Dobby charmed us all with his performance as a protective guardian to Harry, and he knew that Harry would bring justice to Dobby and the Wizarding World for stopping Voldemort.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21): Voldemort

Lord Voldemort crushes it like a Scorpio.
Warner Bros.

Determined. Mystical. Unstoppable. Voldemort embodies Scorpio’s tenacious nature by never compromising. Once a Scorpio’s mind is made up, their determination can never be stopped. Not even in death. Voldemort was devoted to his mission and would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. He would even go to the extent of sacrificing whoever tested his power, even those who supported him.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21): Bellatrix LeStrange

Bellatrix LeStrange has the rebellious spirit of a Sagittarius.
Warner Bros.

Bellatrix is a true Sagittarius with her demented yet quirky hippie persona. Curious and strange, she may have walked out of a Tim Burton film (shout out to her actress Helena Bonham Carter) or she’s just an unpredictable murderous fiend. Either way, like all Sagittarius, she marches to the beat of her own drum. Bellatrix has shown that her spontaneity and spunk is hard to tame.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19): Dumbledore

Dumbledore is definitely reflective of a Capricorn.
Warner Bros.

Every hero needs a mentor who is practical and disciplined. There would be no Harry Potter had it not been for Dumbledore’s wise and sacrificing nature. Like all good leaders, Capricorns inspire others to greatness.  Like Capricorns, Dumbledore is also a very heavy-hitter, being known as one of the few people able to stand up against Voldemort in the Order of the Phoenix.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18): Professor Snape

Professor Snape mirrors an Aquarius.
Warner Bros.

Clever, cunning and radiant like a true Aquarius, Professor Snape’s undying love for Lily led him to secretly protect Harry from evil. He took the road less traveled so he could make all the difference, and that has won the affection of all Harry Potter fans. Despite seeming to work for Voldemort, he was a rather strategic spy for Dumbledore throughout the series and his sacrifice made him into one of the bravest characters throughout the entire series.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20): Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood has the spirit of a Pisces.
Warner Bros.

A daydreamer who sees the world from a different perspective, Luna Lovegood is the never-ending optimist of Dumbledore’s Army. Her Patronus is a hare because they are symbolic of positivity and fortune, like Pisces themselves. Luna Lovegood, thought of by some as crazy, is really just a misunderstood character, and always looked at the good in people (and in creatures). She was even known for seeing a Thestral, which is a creature only known to be seen by people who have witnessed death. Despite her hardship in her young life, she always stayed positive and supportive of Harry.

‘Fantastic Beasts’ 3 spoiler-free review: Dumbledore’s secrets

Johnny Depp is out and Hogwarts is back in “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” the latest installment in the Wizarding World franchise.

The “Harry Potter” canon continues to expand nearly 25 years after J.K. Rowling’s first book was published, and there’s no doubt that fans are eager to dive back into the magical world.

And they should be eager: This latest “Fantastic Beasts” movie, the third installment in the spin-off series about the Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), brings back several much-loved characters — human and non-human — and answers burning questions that have plagued fans since “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” was released in 2018.

Questions such as: Is Credence, who’s an Obscurial, a long-lost Dumbledore? Will Queenie and Jacob finally get married? And will Newt and Tina get together?

‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ review: A fan-friendly examination

Yes, ‘Fantastic Beasts’ does return to Hogwarts

“Secrets of Dumbledore” reunites us with Newt and the aspiring baker Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), who is a No-Maj, or nonmagic person. Oh, and we can’t forget Pickett the Bowtruckle and Teddy the Niffler.

This ragtag team spent the last two movies traveling to various countries, seamlessly transitioning between the Muggle and magical worlds as they attempted to save Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) from himself and stop Lord Voldemort’s Muggle-loathing predecessor, Gellert Grindelwald (previously played by Johnny Depp, now replaced by Mads Mikkelsen), from inciting a war between wizards and Muggles.

But there was always something missing: Hogwarts, the setting we’re most familiar with in Rowling’s Wizarding World. That said, “Secrets of Dumbledore” is a homecoming of sorts.

As the threat of Grindelwald looms larger, they work more closely with Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and a team that consists of Newt’s assistant, Bunty Broadacre (Victoria Yeates), his brother Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner), Yusuf Kama (William Nadylam) and Professor Eulalie “Lally” Hicks (Jessica Williams) — a Charms professor — to prevent Grindelwald from rising to power.

Working as Dumbledore’s disciples involves trips to Hogwarts and Hogsmeade Village — hooray! —where fans get better acquainted with the lesser-known and decidedly grumpier Dumbledore: Aberforth, Albus’ brother who owns the Hogs Head inn. (We saw an older version of him in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2.”)

Frankie Muniz is a big fan of this Arizona university’s basketball team. Here’s why

A couple of notable characters are missing

“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” gives some well-deserved screen time to characters we’ve been introduced to in previous movies.

Bunty remains in love with Newt but is given the opportunity to show more depth to her character. Theseus the uptight Auror thaws a bit, though one might expect he’d be more hung up on the fact that his fiancée Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz) sacrificed herself in the previous film. Yusuf remains a bit of a mystery in “Secrets of Dumbledore” after all the backstory we learned about his unbreakable vow to avenge his family in “Crimes of Grindelwald.”

Jessica Williams as Lally Hicks is a cunning American professor who can handle even the most stressful situations with a sense of ease, and her character perhaps saw the most growth in this “Fantastic Beasts” installation.

Jacob comes into his own in “Secrets of Dumbledore,” too, though at this point it’s getting a little farfetched that someone who cannot perform spells would continue to be invited to these expeditions. Perhaps a future installment could shed light on whether his family tree involves magic.

As for characters who were missing: We knew that Johnny Depp, embroiled in personal legal battles, would not return to the franchise. However, it was less clear whether Newt’s romantic interest, Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), would play a role in “Secrets of Dumbledore.”

She doesn’t, and that might disappoint some people. In fact, it’s not just Newt and Tina; this movie was altogether light on the romance.

There are lots of fun reasons to see ‘Lost City.’ The ending just isn’t one of them

At last, the Dumbledores’ secrets

As for that lore, “The Secrets of Dumbledore” certainly delivers on its title.

Though we — and “Harry Potter” fan-made wikis — know snippets of the Dumbledore family history, there have been some missing puzzle pieces since Grindelwald told Credence that his birth name is actually Aurelius Dumbledore in the previous film.

I’m here to tell you, without revealing spoilers, that this mystery is solved. Fans get to know the deceased Ariana Dumbledore as well as a younger Aberforth. We also gain some insight into Albus Dumbledore — still as cunning and crafty as he was in the original “Harry Potter” films — before he became Headmaster and grew an impressive head of white hair and a beard.

“Secrets of Dumbledore” cracks their history open in a satisfying way and expands upon the love that was once between Albus Dumbledore and Grindelwald. And I can’t wait to see how fans react.

AI Reimagines Harry Potter Characters Based on Book Descriptions [Part 2]

A week ago, I published a story about AI reimagining Harry Potter Characters Based on Book Descriptions.

I did 5 of the main characters in that article and people seem to love it, especially Harry’s AI interpretation. The story has since gotten over 20K views and 127 hours of reading time.

Sock-stuffing ‘Harry Potter’ fans mourn endangered Dobby memorial

A National Trust survey conjured up a bunch of angry fans.

Outrage from “Harry Potter” fans comes following a proposal to move Dobby’s “grave” from Freshwater West beach to a more stable location, due to concerns about the current site’s infrastructure, reported the Independent.

The beloved character in the “Harry Potter” series — a gentle “house elf” who was freed from his abusive masters when gifted a sock — met his tragic and undue end during the franchise’s seventh film installment and was “laid to rest” at Freshwater West beach, prompting fans to leave tokens of goodwill, primarily socks, at the gravesite.

But now, the organization that manages the site has released a survey that could determine the future of Dobby’s memorial.

“Over the past few years we have seen an increase in visitors wanting to experience all that Freshwater West has to offer, including its beautiful beach,” the group began in a statement.

“We love welcoming people to the site, but the increase in numbers does mean its facilities and infrastructure are under even more pressure. We want visitors to have an enjoyable, safe experience while ensuring this special landscape is looked after for future generations,” they wrote.

The purpose of the survey would be to “relocate the memorial to a suitable publicly accessible location.”

Potter-heads, however, are stupefied over the proposal.

“Noooooo leave it be, it’s lovely and it’s not doing any harm,” wrote one fan on Twitter.

“Removing it is pointless, people will still visit there, leave Dobby rest in peace!” they added.

“You can’t just move a memorial at your whim,” another tweeted.

Embattled author and “Harry Potter” creator J.K. Rowling once stated to fans on social media that she actually regretted killing off the heroic character. “I apologize for killing someone who didn’t die during the #BattleofHogwarts, but who laid down his life to save the people who’d win it. I refer, of course, to Dobby the house elf,” she wrote.

One reader responded that she “wish[ed]” to be more like the sweet and selfless Dobby. Responded Rowling, “That answer really touched me.”

How to watch Harry Potter reunion now

it’s time to watch the Harry Potter reunion online, which lives up to the hype with candid interviews of all the stars and great behind-the-scenes tidbits.

HBO Max is hosting Harry Potter 20th anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, which features Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and other major cast members (as well as crew). But the streaming service to watch the Harry Potter reunion will vary based on where you are.

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts began streaming on HBO Max (opens in new tab) at 3 a.m. ET on Saturday (Jan. 1).

‘The bogans were adorable’: Miriam Margolyes on burnouts and her new TikTok fame

She says her often disarming manner ensures people are “not afraid” of her. “When they talk to me, they’re not guarded – they just speak how they feel and that’s very valuable on television, and very rare, I think. You know, I was extremely moved, for example, by the people who couldn’t read,” she says of an older couple she met in Tasmania. It’s one of the series’ more sobering moments, when the statistics of adult illiteracy in Australia are revealed.

“That’s something that I would call political – I’m not afraid to say the numbers. And they are shocking. But it was just wonderful to see middle-aged people making their lives better,” Margolyes says. “I really did find that moving – and hopeful, because while that sort of thing can happen and work, then things can improve. You know, I’m at the moment living in England, which is in the most awful state, and it is almost entirely created by the corrupt inadequacies and incompetence of those in power.”

She’s pleased about Boris Johnson’s resignation; she’s been in trouble several times for her candid opinions of the disgraced PM, for saying she hoped he might die from COVID, among other things. Most recently, I believe, for referring to him as ‘c—’.

“Oh yes, that’s right – I’ve done that many times. And I absolutely stand by that. He’s everything that I totally disapprove of. He’s a philandering, adulterous, incompetent, corrupt politician – there isn’t a single thing there that you could approve of.”

As an Australian citizen (she has a home in NSW that she stays at with her Australian partner of 53 years, Heather, who lives in the Netherlands; they see each other a handful of times a year), she was also pleased with our recent federal election.

“I voted Labor, of course,” she says. “Australians are not stupid – it takes them a while to make up their minds, but I think everybody, whether they voted Liberal or not, were just disgusted. They just thought, for f—’s sake, let’s get rid of him! And I was very happy about that.”

Helen Mirren makes regal bow as Harry Potter quiz show host

Dame Helen, as the Oscar, Emmy and Tony-winning actor is properly addressed, makes her debut as a quiz host with Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses. The weekly, four-part series begins 8 pm EST Sunday on TBS and Cartoon Network.

In episode one, contestants representing the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff houses field trivia questions about J.K. Rowling’s novels-turned-films in a bid to claim a championship trophy and prizes.

Helen Mirren left the cramming to the players and is unworried about being a novice game show emcee.

“I can certainly play a strict host,” she said, drolly.

Mirren’s willingness to take on something different shouldn’t raise eyebrows. She’s celebrated for her regal roles — including The Queen, Elizabeth I and Catherine the Great — but also counts the Fast the Furious movie franchise among her varied credits.

Her return to a comic book-based project is upcoming: She plays a mythological goddess in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Mirren’s baptism in the genre came with the film Red and its sequel.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Helen Mirren discussed her admiration of the Potter canon, making a TV fashion statement, and female bonding on the set of the DC Comics-based film. Remarks have been edited for length and clarity.

You’ve had an eclectic acting career, and now you’re adding your first game show to the resume.

Absolutely, which is why I signed up for it. I’m always up for a bit of an adventure. Also, of course, it’s a wonderful subject and at a great moment, the 20th anniversary (of The Sorcerer’s Stone, the first Potter film). And the very fact I was never in any Harry Potter movies — much to my chagrin, I might add. It was a great way to to be able to participate in the whole extraordinary phenomena that is Harry Potter.

Are you a fan of the stories?

What I remember very clearly was when the whole world of Harry Potter started rising. The most magical thing is the way the books were passed from hand to hand amongst kids, and adults sort of didn’t know anything about it. It wasn’t like it was published with great fanfare. A lot of the people who’ll be competing (on the show), they will be in their 20s, 30s, 40s, but they will have past experience with Harry Potter as a kid.

Have you watched any TV competition shows for tips or sought advice on hosting?

I thought I’d just play it by ear and be as natural as I could. I’m personally very excited about it, so hopefully I’ll communicate that. I’ll be probably as nervous as the contestants themselves, and I’ll try to hide that.

You aren’t playing a role with the costume dictated by your character, but was there a certain look you wanted as a host?

That’s an interesting question. The set, as you will see, it’s so extraordinary, it’s a beautiful, beautiful Harry Potter world that they’ve constructed. So I did want what I wore to reflect a slight costuming feel. And in a way, I’m playing a kind of a character. So, yes, I wanted it to be a sense of costume and presentation. It’s got a slight sense of vintage about it, and a sense of belonging in that world.

In the sequel to Shazam! you play Hespera, daughter of Atlas. Is she a hero or villain?

I’m not going to tell you the answer to that. You’re going to have to ascertain for yourself. I’m a member of three goddesses: Lucy Liu as Kalypso and the third goddess played by Rachel Zegler, who will be a huge star in a very short space of time. So there are three of us together, and that was really a great experience because it’s so infrequent that you get to spend a whole of a movie with two other women. So often you’re the only woman in the cast. Here we were a trio, and that was great. I loved it.
