Hogwarts Legacy is already too toxic for some gamers

The upcoming Harry Potter RPG, Hogwarts Legacy, has been getting lots of publicity lately. Unfortunately, it’s been bad publicity, such as this month’s resignation of lead designer Troy Leavitt after his YouTube channel became more widely known. In the channel, he expressed views that appeared to be pro-GamerGate, anti-feminist and supportive of men accused of sexual harassment.

It’s not the first PR problem for the game, and some gamers are now vowing to boycott Hogwarts Legacy altogether. The popular gaming forum, Resetera, has announced “a total ban on threads for promotional media for the game… no threads for trailers or official announcements, no hype threads, no fluff pieces about its features.”

Harry Potter film order: What is the best order to watch the Harry Potter movies? – Pocket

Why you can trust Pocket-lint

(Pocket-lint) – The Wizarding World has captured the imagination of fans the world over, but unlike some series of films, there’s no numbering to keep you on track, only titles.

Then you have the question of the Wizarding World films aside from the Harry Potter story – how exactly do these fit into the bigger picture?

Unlike some epic movie franchises, Harry Potter’s story is sequential, so you have to watch the films in order. That at least makes things consistent and there are important plot threads that run from the first to the last, so any deviation will spoil the story, or leave you confused.

However, we’re presenting two orders to you, the release order, i.e, the date the films came out, and the chronological order that those films occurred on a Wizarding World timeline. One version has spoilers, so to avoid those if you haven’t seen the films, click the links to jump right to the order you’re looking for.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone/Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

squirrel_widget_174672

This is the start of the Harry Potter story where you meet Harry for the first time as he heads to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, set in 1991 – but the film was released in 2001. You meet many of the main characters at Hogwarts, including the introduction of Lord Voldemort, Harry’s arch nemesis, with the action revolving around the Philosopher’s Stone. That stone belonged to Nicholas Flamel, who you don’t actually meet until Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

squirrel_widget_174753

The second book in the series and the second film, the adventures at Hogwarts continue for Harry Potter and his friends. Lord Voldemort grows stronger and things get a little darker as the children get older. The film came out in 2002, but is set in 1992.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

squirrel_widget_174673

There’s quite a step change for the third movie as we’re introduced to Sirius Black (the prisoner), who has a huge impact on Harry’s story. But it’s really the introduction of the dementors that see things getting darker, with an increasing sense of peril. At the same time, the Muggle family storyline becomes less important as Harry embraces his destiny. The film is set in 1993, but was released in 2004.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

squirrel_widget_174674

The Goblet of Fire is a pivotal moment in the story, taking the characters in to their teenage years (Harry is about 14 in this movie), introducing teenage themes like relationships, gives us the Quidditch World Cup and the Triwizard Tournament. The film starts in 1994 and was released in 2005.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

squirrel_widget_174675

With Voldemort now a very real threat, the action sees disruption at Hogwarts and the rise of the resistance against the dark lord – the Order of the Phoenix – and the general denial that there’s a problem from the Ministry of Magic. The film was released in 2007 and is set around 1995.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

squirrel_widget_174676

The 2009 film is set in 1996 and in many ways is the story of Severus Snape and Albus Dumbledore, adding complexity to the Harry Potter story and following the heroes into even more perilous engagements with the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

squirrel_widget_174771

The final book in the Harry Potter story becomes two films. They are closely linked, with the first released in 2010. Harry Potter and friends decide to skip the last year of Hogwarts to pursue Voldemort and bring about his destruction. Much of the film revolves around hunting and destroying horcruxes, while Voldemort himself seeks the Deathly Hallows, wanting to become a master of death.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

squirrel_widget_174677

The second instalment of the Deathly Hallows was released in 2011 and continues the quests of the first instalment, with a lot more of the action centred around Hogwarts, including the huge Battle of Hogwarts. It pulls on various threads from earlier in the films – like the Chamber of Secrets and much more Potterlore – and brings the story to an action-fuelled conclusion.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

squirrel_widget_174679

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is named after a Hogwarts textbook of the same title, authored by Newt Scamander, who is the protagonist of the Fantastic Beasts films. The films are a prequel to the Harry Potter series, in that they carry many of the Wizarding World themes but in a different story arc. In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander arrives in New York in 1926 on magizoologist business but is drawn into a magical plot.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

squirrel_widget_174680

The fantastic beasts take something of a backseat as the plot moves to the pursuit of Grindelwald, who wants to establish a wizarding order that’s superior to muggles. We meet a young Dumbledore giving a link back to the Harry Potter films, but many of the characters from the first Fantastic Beasts return, as well as characters referenced in other movies, like Nicholas Flamel. The film is set in 1927 but came out in 2018, with a third instalment due to complete the story at some point in the future.

Hogwarts Legacy has been delayed into 2022

Warner Bros. Interactive has delayed its Harry Potter RPG, Hogwarts Legacy, into 2022.

In a statement published on social media, the publisher thanked fans for their “tremendous reaction” to the game’s announcement last year and confirmed the new release window.

“Creating the best possible experience for all of the Wizarding World and gaming fans is paramount to us so we are giving the game the time it needs,” the statement read.

Developed by Avalanche Software (Disney Infinity), Hogwarts Legacy is described as an open-world RPG that takes players beyond Hogwarts to new and familiar locations, as they “live the unwritten and embark on a dangerous journey to uncover a hidden truth of the wizarding world.”

As the game story begins, players grow their magical abilities by mastering spells, brewing potions and taming fantastic beasts.

While little is known about the game beyond Warner’s statements, in 2018 footage of an early build of the game leaked, showing off the player learning spells, exploring iconic areas of the wizarding world and interacting with beasts.

It’s said that the game will begin with the player being transferred to Hogwarts in their 5th year, two years before students typically graduate from the school.

“Hogwarts Legacy is filled with immersive magic, putting players at the centre of their adventure to become the witch or wizard they choose to be,” Warner said last year.

“They will grow their character’s abilities as they master powerful spells, hone combat skills and select companions to help them face off against deadly enemies. Players will also encounter missions and scenarios that will pose difficult choices and determine what they stand for.”

Published by Warner under its new Portkey Games label, Hogwarts Legacy will release for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One consoles, and PC.

michele de lucchi + AMDL CIRCLE design harry potter book covers to blend fantasy and contemporary architecture

since first being published, fans and readers of Harry Potter across the globe have been enthralled by the rich visual representations of the saga’s magical world, from the architecture of hogwarts castle to the haunting island fortress, azkaban. for the covers of the new italian edition of Harry Potter 2021 by salani editore, michele de lucchi / AMDL CIRCLE decided to take a step back and interpret the fictional locations as archetypes of living, and represent them with visionary architecture. the buildings depicted draw on the design imagery of the studio, particularly on the projects that have symbolic connections with the series’ locations. by uniting these elements, new landscapes are born.

for this epic project, AMDL CIRCLE moved away from the classic iconography of Harry Potter to pay homage to its literary imagination with the creation of unprecedented scenarios. ‘if everything is already perfect and defined, how can we create something new?,’ the studio shares. ‘we return to zero and represent places as archetypes. we achieved this through the symbolic value that can be attributed to our architecture. everyone is free to imagine the faces and buildings they want also through their own personal experience.’

the resulting covers intertwine the fantasy saga with contemporary architecture, offering a transformative proposal of the classic Harry Potter imagery to stimulate imaginations worldwide. see each of the seven cover depictions, with sketches and architectural models, as well as descriptions from the studio about the inspirations behind each artwork below.

Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone ‘to represent hogwarts school, we referred to a conceptual project on ‘abbeys’, solid and sturdy constructions, strongly anchored to the ground but reaching upwards due to the momentum of spires that push the gaze towards the sky and, metaphorically, the future.  the inspiration for these sculptures comes from the gothic abbeys of tuscany and central italy.’

Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets‘we imagined ‘the burrow’ as architecture of the ‘stacks’ series, objects composed of many pieces of wood that seem to balance as if by magic. in Harry Potter, ‘the burrow’ evokes the idea of home and family, so that the stacks are endowed with value for what they evoke: gathering, preserving, caring for, and organizing. they evoke an ancient way of building and can resemble a small house or a large cathedral with roofs that cover and shelter from rain or snow.’

Harry Potter and the prisoner of azkaban‘azkaban prison is never described in the books, we only know that it is located on a freezing islet in the north sea. we thought of it as an imposing monolith, a mythological construction reminiscent of the hotel medea in batumi: a high tower of superimposed and staggered volumes, which seem generate each other in an infinite epic that surpasses centuries.’

Harry Potter and the goblet of fire‘the setting is the quidditch arena, the most widespread and practiced sport in the wizarding world of Harry Potter, played astride flying broomsticks. we imagine it as a traveling stadium with the stands taking the shape of the temporary installation ‘expo icon’. the concept refers to the possibility of handling architectural objects intended for events, which can be disassembled and reassembled in different contexts.’

Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix — ‘the representation of hagrid’s hut refers to the ‘haystack’ series. haystacks are constructions that blend into the surrounding nature and testify to manual work. they have a pure essential form, built by superimposing, material on top of material, which appears on the landscape with beauty and discretion.’

Harry Potter and the half-blood prince‘the astronomy tower is hogwarts’ highest point, where one can observe stars during lessons. we designed it as the air tower built for the archart project, within the gardens of the milan triennale. a tower of air has a magical quality with the wind that is created and rises by induction. the effect is simple and suggests that one can enjoy the wonders of nature without imposing presumptuous and inefficient acts of force. verticality pushes us to look up at the sky, in search of meaning in man’s existence and transience.’

Harry Potter and the deathly hallows‘for the final clash at hogwarts, we imagined the covered bridge as taking the sinusoidal profile of the bridge of peace in tbilisi. this structure consists of a pedestrian walkway and a filigreed roof that seems suspended in midair. by definition, a bridge is symbolic architecture, a place of cohesion between two points, two social circumstances, two different and distant territorial conformations. in times of destruction and war, unfortunately, many bridges are destroyed as happens in the battle of hogwarts.’

The incredibly famous rock star you may not know was in a Harry Potter film

We’ve all watched the Harry Potter films enough times to know them like the back of our hand…or so we thought.

From iconic lines and famous spells, to behind-the-scenes filming locations, we were convinced that our knowledge of the wizarding world was absolutely expert.

But even the most enthusiastic witches and wizards upon us may have missed this trick.

We knew about loads of celebs who once starred in the magical movie saga which many of us have grown up with.

From Tracy Beaker and Bridgerton stars, to actors from our beloved Only Fools and Horses the films really were a ‘best of British’ acting talent roll call.

But what about really famous rock stars, did you ever spot one of those?

We have to say we completely missed this one…

The iconic Britpop legend is one of many rockstars who have been in the Harry Potter films (credit: Mirrorpix)

If you’re a super-duper Potter fan, you will recognise this man’s face from Weird Sisters – the band that rocked out on stage at the Yule Ball in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

But more ‘Common People’ are likely to recognise him as Jarvis Cocker – the frontman of iconic Britpop band Pulp.

Speaking to Stereogum at the time, the legendary artist revealed he only appeared in the film to impress his stepson and sister’s children.

“I did it to be popular with the kids. I became the best uncle ever,” he joked.

The music and film nerds amongst us will no doubt be fangirling. And it turns out, there’s even more reason to do so.

Because alongside Jarvis, Radiohead stars Jonny Greenwood (lead guitarist and keyboard player) and Phil Selway (drummer) starres as fellow band members in the film, as well as electronica artist Jason Buckle and Add N to (X) member Steven Claydon.

Who knew Harry Potter was so rock and roll!

Girls on the Run empowerment program helps build bodies and self-esteem

Memphis, Tenn. — Running, sit-ups and lunges can help to build strong muscles, but they can also help boost self-esteem.

Girls on the Run Memphis is a girl empowerment program with a goal to do just that.

Executive Director Joanna Lipman said the organization uses physical activity and dynamic discussions to build social, physical, and emotional skills while encouraging healthy habits of life.

“Our purpose is to encourage girls to find their joy and their confidence and to find that they have limitless potential,” Lipman said.

With two after-school programs for elementary and middle school girls, participants go through a series of lessons over the course of eight weeks.

“It’s topics that are interesting to them that they’re dealing with in their daily lives,” Lipman said.

“How to understand how to be a good friend, to approach something that might be difficult with a more positive attitude.

Since 2018, Girls on the Run Memphis has served almost 430 girls at various program sites around the city.

Evie Johns and Carlee Rogers are both in the program for middle school students.

“I think I’ve learned a lot about positivity and emotions, but also about physical fitness as well,” Johns said.

“And I really enjoyed it, because it makes me feel very positive and happy doing it.”

“I like Girls on the Run because I get to interact with other people and find out what we have in common and stuff and make new friends,” Rogers said.

Even in a pandemic, coaches like Angela Graves have found a way to teach girls virtually.

“I love coaching the girls because they bring their energy and their enthusiasm to practice, and it helps uplift me as a woman and as a person to see the smile on their face when they’re crushing their goals and achieving what they want to achieve,” Graves said.

“It just makes me smile.”

Registration for the Spring season is now open.

Harry Potter and Star Wars merchandise shop launches in Hinckley

Hogwarts is coming to Hinckley as a movie merchandise shop opens in the town, featuring items from the world of Harry Potter, Star Wars and many other film classics.

The magical shop is based in The Warehouse in Druid Street, opposite Terry West Carpets, and already boasts a horde of t-shirts, rucksacks, mugs and toys from many popular cinematic worlds.

Longtime business pals Pete Salisbury and Neal Whitmore decided to set up GeekMerch after finding success selling the memorabilia online.

Mr Salisbury said: “We have been open for two Saturdays now and the response has been amazing.

“We have been online for the last two years but since lockdown we decided to create a bit of a shop for fans to come to when shopping was allowed again.

“We wanted to create a bit of a fun experience shop and as we do sell everything from Harry Potter, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Minecraft to Anime we are trying to cram a lot in.

“We love it because people can explore, chat and be immersed in their favourite movie, TV show, game of Anime as well as nostalgia.”

Mr Salisbury was inspired to get into the movie collectibles business as he and has five children each have a favourite series, so he wanted to provide a place where people can buy a unique gift, whatever film, TV or gaming theme they are into.

The shop will be open on Saturdays from 8am to 5pm and possibly on Sundays.

For the latest updates on the shop, follow the GeekMerch page on Facebook.

Indigenous leaders in Canada call for search for mass graves

Top of The World — our morning news roundup written by editors at The World. Subscribe here.

Canada outrage
Amid widespread outrage and grief after the discovery of a mass grave holding the remains of 215 children, some as young as three years old, at the site of a former residential school, Indigenous leaders in Canada are calling for a search for other mass graves across the nation. The find at the Kamloops Indian Residential School, done with the help of radar technology, sparked outrage. For more than 150 years until 1996, Canada’s residential school system forcibly separated Indigenous children from their families in what a government-appointed commission tasked with investigating the system called “cultural genocide” in 2015.

Naomi Osaka: French Open
Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the French Open after her decision to not speak with the press during the tournament, citing negative effects of press interactions on her mental health. The shocking announcement comes after the 23-year-old was fined $15,000 by Roland-Garros organizers for skipping the contractual news conference after her first-round match. Osaka’s move has led to an outpouring of support for the four-time Grand Slam champion.

Israel: Netanyahu
Israel’s two-year-long political struggle to form a lasting government could reach a conclusion this week. If a coalition government is formed, it could see Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving head of state, replaced by Naftali Bennett, leader of the small, hardline Yamina party. “It’s not a done deal yet, but it is true that this is the closest Israelis have come to replacing Netanyahu,” The World’s Ariel Oseran reported (?).

Scientists in Kenya are coordinating an ambitious, government-sponsored effort to count all of Kenya’s major land and marine wildlife for the first time.

The aim of the census, launched this month, is not to create an exact count, but rather to establish a baseline of wildlife data, and will focus predominantly on counting terrestrial and aquatic mammals.

The Accord on Building and Fire Safety in Bangladesh, established in 2013 following the deadliest garment industry accident in the world, was set to expire on Monday.

But in a last-minute move, the parties involved — including brands, retailers and unions — agreed to a tentative agreement and extended negotiations for three more months for the accord aimed at protecting garment workers’ safety in Bangladesh.

Mirvish announces 1st stage show since start of pandemic

For the first time in over a year, live indoor theatre is returning to Toronto.

Mirvish Productions said Tuesday the “socially distanced sound installation” Blindness will premiere at the Princess of Wales Theatre on Aug. 4 — marking the city’s first indoor stage show since the pandemic shut down theatres in May 2020.

Adapted by Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) from the José Saramago’s novel, the story is described, fittingly, as “the rise and, ultimately, profoundly hopeful end of an unimaginable global pandemic.” It opened in New York in April.

Blindness was originally scheduled to begin its Toronto run in November 2020.

A Mirvish spokesperson said the theatre company expects the province will be allowing indoor performing arts shows by August.

In its recent three-step reopening plan, the government of Ontario said 70 per cent of the province’s adult population must have had their first shot of a COVID-19 vaccine before indoor shows will be allowed. The province hit 50 per cent in mid-May.

A COVID-19 message appears above the Ed Mirvish Theatre in downtown Toronto, April 22, 2020. Mirvish Productions halted all shows in May of that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (Michael Wilson/CBC)

The Blindness performance schedule and ticket prices will be released soon; tickets go on sale June 23.

The announcement follows similar moves south of the border.

In early May, Hamilton, Wicked, The Lion King, the Canadian musical Come From Away and other shows said they would return to Broadway this fall, after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said public health restrictions in the state would be lifted on Sept. 14.

London’s West End allowed audiences to return for select shows starting on May 20, with many more productions planned over the summer.

“Finally, it’s Canada’s turn,” said Mirvish Productions founder David Mirvish in a news release. “We are thrilled to be able to take this first step to re-energize the theatre community here, offering much-needed hope to arts workers and audiences alike.”

The reopening won’t mark an immediate return to normal, though. Each performance will be limited to 50 people, all audience members will be in distanced “pods” — sitting either alone or in pairs — and everyone, including staff, will be required to wear a mask.

Most Canadian theatre productions are still in limbo. While some productions have tentatively scheduled dates, they are all contingent on meeting similar vaccination rates. Mirvish’s other shows, including Hamilton, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Come From Away, haven’t had their schedules updated for months.

Ontario’s Stratford Festival, meanwhile, is eyeing a late June season opening. In an interview with CBC News, artistic director Antoni Cimolino said 2021’s festival will take place outside under two open-air canopies, and will cap audience at 100 people. Cimolino said the festival lost millions when it cancelled last year’s run, and with this year’s numbers kept so low, it is unlikely to turn a profit.
