Over the past 47 years, countless moviegoers have encountered the work of Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), even if they may not have realized it at the time. That’s because ILM’s team works way behind the scenes, creating innovative—and believable—visual effects that help viewers suspend their disbelief for a few hours while watching movies like Jurassic Park (1993), Transformers (2007), and the Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises.

Now, a new six-part documentary called “Light and Magic” brings the company’s story into the spotlight. The series, which launches on the streaming platform Disney+ on July 27, explores the history and impact of ILM, which film director and producer George Lucas founded in 1975 while working on Star Wars.

Released this week, the documentary’s trailer offers a tantalizing look into the origins of ILM, which developed pioneering visual effects techniques and technologies that revolutionized the film industry. As Germain Lussier writes for Gizmodo, ILM “literally changed the world.”

“Visual effects create the magic that makes people want to go to the movies,” says Lucas in the trailer. “Movies are special effects.”

The company, which is an offshoot of Lucasfilm, has won numerous awards since its founding, including 3 Emmy Awards, 15 Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects, and 33 Academy Awards for Scientific and Technical Awards, per ILM’s website. Today, it draws on the talents of more than 1,200 employees around the world, including artists, software engineers, art directors, editors, producers, computer graphics artists and technicians, all of whom collaborate with filmmakers to make their visual dreams a reality.

In its early days, the company mastered traditional visual effects techniques, such as blue-screen photography, matte painting, and model and miniature construction. Then, staffers really began innovating, figuring out how to use computer graphics and digital imaging in feature films and developing numerous new technologies along the way.

ILM created some of the silver screen’s earliest computer-generated characters, as seen in movies like The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Jurassic Park. Within the industry, the company is also well known for its ability to seamlessly combine photorealistic digital images with video footage.

More recently, the company developed a new real-time virtual production platform called StageCraft that allows filmmakers to surround actors with screens realistically depicting any location in the world. This means moviemakers can do their work from a studio, rather than traveling to far-flung locales to get the right shot, saving both time and money.

All told, the team at ILM has worked on more than 350 films, including 25 of the top 50 worldwide box office hits, per the company’s website. The documentary itself features some heavy hitters, too. Star Wars and Indiana Jones writer Lawrence Kasdan directed the series, which includes interviews with Lucas, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Ron Howard, Robert Zemeckis and other influential filmmakers

Reflecting on ILM’s trajectory for the documentary was eye-opening even to the people who lived through the journey.

“It was a wild place,” said Kasdan at a Star Wars event in late May, per the A.V. Club’s Matt Schimkowitz. “At first nobody knew how it was going to work. It was a lot of improvising, which led to a lot of communication. People realizing the skills they had could be expanded. For 40 or 50 years, it’s been that kind of environment, where geniuses can be geniuses.”

It seemed fitting, however, to put the recipe that started it all for Harry to the test.

Keep reading to learn how you can bring some magic into your kitchen with a homemade version of Hagrid’s birthday cake for Harry. Then buy yourself some butterbeer to wash it all down!

Directions

Step 1: Prep cake pans

Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease two 8-inch round cake pans. Line the bottoms with parchment paper and set them aside.

Step 2: Whisk together dry ingredients

Lauren Habermehl for Taste of Home

Next, in the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda and cocoa powder.

Editor’s Tip: You can also mix this cake the Muggle way with a bowl and spoon. (Bonus points if it’s with one of these Harry Potter kitchen items.)

Step 3: Add wet ingredients

Lauren Habermehl for Taste of Home

Add in the vinegar, vanilla, dairy-free milk and beat until smooth, creamy and slightly paler in color; about 3-4 minutes.

Step 4: Stir in chocolate

Lauren Habermehl for Taste of Home

Stir in the melted chocolate and mix until fully incorporated.

Step 5: Bake

Lauren Habermehl for Taste of Home

Divide the batter equally between the two prepared cake pans, spreading it into a smooth, even layer. Then bake for 20-25 minutes, until the cakes are firm to the touch (here are more tips for testing cake doneness). Remove promptly, loosen the cakes from their pans, and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Step 6: Prepare the icing

Lauren Habermehl for Taste of Home

While the cakes cool, whip up the icing. In a saucepan, warm the dairy-free milk and creamed coconut until melted and homogenous. Transfer to a bowl and combine with the vanilla and confectioners’ sugar. Whisk until a thick, smooth, spreadable frosting forms.

Editor’s Tip: If the frosting is too thick, you can add a bit more dairy-free milk. If it’s too thin, add a bit more confectioners’ sugar until the desired consistency is achieved.

Step 7: Divide the icing

Lauren Habermehl for Taste of Home

Transfer a third of the icing into a mixing bowl with 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder. Mix until combined then set aside. Scoop 2-3 tablespoons of the white icing base into another small bowl. Add the green food coloring, a few drops at a time, stirring after each addition until the desired green color is achieved. Set aside.

Grate the beets into a clean bowl lined with paper towels or cheesecloth. Wrap the beets in the cloth to make a bundle and squeeze over the bowl to collect as much juice as possible. Discard the beets and then gradually begin to add the beet juice to the remaining icing base, stirring after each addition, until a bold, vibrant pink color is achieved.

Editor’s Tip: While we appreciate the use of beets as a natural food coloring, feel free to use a few drops of pink gel food coloring if you don’t want to hassle with the beets (we are sadly Muggles, after all).

Step 8: Assemble the cake

Lauren Habermehl for Taste of Home

To assemble the cake, spread the chocolate icing generously over the top of one of the cooled cake rounds.

Step 9: Decorate

Lauren Habermehl for Taste of Home

Place the second cake on top and then, using an offset spatula, spread the pink icing evenly over the entire cake until smooth and uniform. (Here’s how the pros decorate a cake.)

Next, add your “Happee Birthdae” message (remember, Hagrid is not the greatest speller), personalizing the cake with the name of your choice. Use a piping bag fitted with a small round tip to pipe the letters onto the cake.

Step 10: Sit on the cake

Well, maybe don’t actually sit on the cake as Hagrid did. Instead, take a sharp knife and use it to cut a jagged vein through the center of the icing layer and between the letters, as desired.

Cut into slices and serve with a glass of homemade butterbeer.

Here’s What I Thought

We were skeptical as we mixed up this cake. The batter was very thick and pretty dry making it difficult to mix. Additionally, the absence of any oil or fat (not even applesauce) had us concerned that the cake would be dense and dry.

But we were wrong. In the words of Gilderoy Lockhart, “This is just like magic!” The cake turned out incredibly moist and ultra-decadent with rich chocolate flavor.

As for the icing, we’ll admit it was a bit tricky to work with. In fact, we suspect conjuring a Patronus for the first time may be easier than spreading this icing. In testing, we found the icing set very quickly, making it challenging to spread evenly and smoothly.

However, perhaps it’s not meant to be perfectly smooth, so the cake retains a bit of rustic Hagrid charm.

We’re not quite why the authors decided to make this Harry Potter birthday cake vegan. Perhaps they wanted to make sure the recipe in this book was as inclusive as possible for different diets.

Another theory is that perhaps they figured that Hagrid, being a friend of all magical creatures, would have preferred to bake vegan to ensure none would be harmed in the making of this cake.

Whatever the logic may have been, there’s no doubt that this Harry Potter birthday cake is delicious!

Chris Hemsworth’s ‘Thor’ becomes second Hollywood film to cross Rs 100 crore mark this year

It’s been five weeks since ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ hit the cinemas in India and the makers of the movie are quite happy with the movie’s performance in the country. The film closed its fifth weekend recently and has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark! ‘Thor’ is the second Hollywood film to ever cross the magical figure of Rs 100 crores this year. Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh took to his social media handles to share the news. According to him, the film earned Rs 79.07 cr in week 1, Rs 14.46 cr in week 2, Rs 4.34 cr in week 3, Rs 1.69 cr in week 4, and Rs 46 lacs in week 5.

The movie hit the theatres on July 7. The movie stars Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman in lead roles. Recently, Chris Hemsworth revealed that his younger brother Liam Hemsworth was almost cast as Marvel’s Thor instead of him.According to E! News, while promoting the latest instalment of the franchise, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder, the 38-year-old revealed just how close Liam was to playing the Mjolnir swinging character. While several recent Marvel Cinematic Universe projects have been exploring the Multiverse, the same isn’t the case with ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.Chris told an entertainment outlet, “In this film, it’s not something we explore. But who knows if there is more in the future, as you say it has opened up multitudes of options we can head in or be taken in.”He stated he’d like his brother Liam to play an alternate version of Thor if the movies ever explore the multiverse, eventually.

“My little brother almost got cast as Thor. He was one of the first people who got right down to the wire on getting the part so, I don’t know, I could cross paths with him. That will be fun,” Chris admitted.Last month, during a show, Chris recalled not getting a call-back for the role after his initial audition. “I think my audition sucked. I think that was the response I got,” he said.Although Chris did not make it to the next round, Liam shortly after decided to pursue the gig–and impressively made it down to the “last five people” being considered.”They were like, ‘Look, he’s great, but he’s a bit young.’ My manager then said, ‘Well, he does have an older brother,’ which was me,” he explained, adding, “I came back in, re-auditioned a few times, and just had a different attitude.Chris ultimately went on to join the MCU, with the first Thor movie premiering back in 2011. But Liam didn’t exactly get the short end of the stick as he debuted in ‘The Hunger Games’ a year later in 2012.The franchise has proven to have deep family ties for the Hemsworth brothers. Chris and Liam’s older brother, Luke, has appeared in both ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ in a cameo as an Asgardian actor playing Thor, as per E! News. (ANI)

In the books, the glass disappears, but Dudley doesn’t fall in.

I know it isn’t a big difference, but I think it’s a really funny moment in the movies that gives Dudley what he deserves for bullying Harry, and it should have been in the books.”

Belarus protests: What prisoners’ letters tell us two years on

It’s been two years since the people of Belarus went to the polls. The entrenchment of the Lukashenka regime had made elections a dangerous time for civil society and anyone brave enough to stand as an opposition candidate. But despite state repression, a militarised and unaccountable security force, and a skewed electoral landscape, Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s grip on power looked weak in August 2020.

Until it didn’t.

Officially, Lukashenka won a landslide victory, securing 80.23% of the vote. In a state that had been hollowed out, official vote tallies mean both very little and everything at the same time. In the two years that have followed, a protest movement contesting the outcome of the election has been brutally suppressed, senior opposition leaders imprisoned or forced to flee and at least 1,261 political prisoners detained (as of 9 August 2022). The regime and its security forces continue to behave with impunity. Lukashenka has also backed the invasion of Ukraine by Putin’s Russia.

Russia’s actions in Ukraine have refocused the world’s attention on the region, but Belarusian prisons are a record of a brutal clampdown that is largely obscured from view. Since August 2021, Index on Censorship has worked with local partners, including Politzek and Belarus Free Theatre, to translate and publish letters written by people detained since the election. To date we have published 23 letters that shine a light on what goes on in Lukashenka’s prisons.

Many describe the rampant abuse of power that comes clothed in the language of public order. Levon Khalatrian, a bar manager and opposition volunteer, was sentenced to two years of restricted freedom or khymiya. The February 2021 sentence was for “breaching public order” on election night by shouting slogans, obstructing traffic, and clapping his hands. Maria Kalenik, a 23-year-old student, was accused of organising and participating in group actions that violated public order. Hanna Vishniak, a volunteer with an activist Telegram channel, was convicted of “organising and preparing activities that grossly violate public order”. On 4 June 2021 she was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

Each letter is the result of a careful calculation between truth and concealment, a melding made necessary by the censorship regime in place. ‘“In Belarusian prisons, letters pass through strict two-way censorship regimes… Words, sentences, and even pages can be withdrawn, whole letters can be returned to the sender or simply disappear if the rules are not followed. This is, however, the best case scenario. In the worst-case, a person can be sent to a punishment cell, beaten, and threatened,” says researcher and human rights activist Ala Sivets.

‘A sh*t story about a little wizard on a train platform’: Andrew Tate’s Oversimplification of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter Series Draws Major Flak From Potterheads

Internet Sensation Andrew Tate’s interview recently resurfaced on the Internet, now making Potterheads furious due to the oversimplification of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Fantasy Fiction Author JK Rowling rose to fame between 1997 and 2007 after publishing the children’s fantasy series Harry Potter. The series was soon adapted into a big screen adaptation by Warner Bros. Studio and that too received a great response from the critics and the viewers and has since been in production of the making and distribution of Harry Potter universe films.
