‘Harry Potter’: What stars are saying about J.K. Rowling

“Harry Potter” films as Ron Weasley, Rupert Grint says J.K. Rowling has become like a family member to him — though perhaps a problematic one.

During an interview with The Times published Saturday, Grint, 33, likened Rowling, 56, to an “auntie.”

“I don’t necessarily agree with everything my auntie says, but she’s still my auntie. It’s a tricky one,” Grint said.

Rowling continues to be a source of controversy after making headlines in 2020 with multiple posts online voicing opinions on the transgender community that conflated sex with gender and defended ideas suggesting that changing one’s biological sex threatens her own gender identity. She has doubled down even after the posts were widely perceived as transphobic, misinformative and hurtful.

‘Harry Potter’ reunion: How it addresses author J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans controversy

Grint later explained in an Esquire interview published March 2021, that he still is “hugely grateful” for the acclaimed author, though he can still disagree with her views.

“I am hugely grateful (for) everything that she’s done. I think that she’s extremely talented, and I mean, clearly, her works are genius,” he said. “But yeah, I think also you can have huge respect for someone and still disagree with things like that.”

“Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.” Though she does not make a new appearance, the special included archival footage of Rowling from 2019 and featured new clips of the cast celebrating her books’ legacy and sharing how directions from the author influenced their performances.

Here’s what the rest of the “Harry Potter” franchise cast and crew has said about Rowling’s comments.

How trans fans are grappling with J.K. Rowling’s legacy after her transphobic comments

Daniel Radcliffe pens essay in support of trans community

Daniel Radcliffe responded to Rowling’s comments about gender and sex in a June 2020 essay for LGBTQ non-profit organization The Trevor Project, in which he criticized her views.

“Transgender women are women,” the actor, who starred as the title character in the film adaptation of Rowling’s fantasy series, wrote. “It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.”

Though Radcliffe noted that Rowling is “unquestionably responsible” for the course of his life, he added he still feels “compelled to say something at this moment.”

“To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you,” he continued. “I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you.”

Emma Watson stands behind trans community

The actress who brought Hermione Granger to life in the “Harry Potter” film series tweeted her support of trans people following Rowling’s controversial comments.

“Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are,” Emma Watson, 31, tweeted in 2020.

Idris Elba Fights Off a Massive Rogue Lion in Thriller ‘Beast’ Trailer

Idris Elba Fights Off a Massive Rogue Lion in Thriller ‘Beast’ Trailer

“It’s the law of the jungle! It’s the only law that matters.” Universal has debuted the first official trailer for Beast, a new angry lion movie from director Baltasar Kormákur (The Deep, 2 Guns, Everest, The Oath). This reminds me of the 90s hit The Ghost and the Darkness, also about rogue lions attacking people with a similar intensity as this one. Idris Elba stars in a pulse-pounding new thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator. Iyana Halley plays Daniels’ 18-year-old daughter, Meredith, and Leah Sava Jeffries plays his 13-year-old, Norah. Also co-starring Sharlto Copley as the local game reserve manager. There’s only two or three real shots of the lion in this trailer, which is obviously CGI. And the final scene in this very much seems like a Jurassic Park riff in the truck when the T-Rex attacks them. Check it out below.

Here’s the first official trailer for Baltasar Kormákur’s Beast, direct from Universal’s YouTube:

Sometimes the rustle in the bushes actually is a monster. Idris Elba plays Dr. Nate Daniels, a recently widowed husband who returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a long-planned trip with their daughters to a game reserve managed by Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley), an old family friend and wildlife biologist. But what begins as a journey of healing jolts into a fearsome fight for survival when a lion, a survivor of blood-thirsty poachers who now sees all humans as the enemy, begins stalking them. Beast is directed by Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, director of the movies 101 Reykjavík, The Sea, A Little Trip to Heaven, Jar City, White Night Wedding, Inhale, Contraband, The Deep, 2 Guns, Everest, The Oath, and Adrift previously. The screenplay is written by Ryan Engle (Rampage, Non-Stop) from an original story by Jaime Primak Sullivan Produced by Will Packer and Baltasar Kormákur. Universal will debut Kormákur’s Beast in theaters nationwide on August 19th, 2022 later this summer. Look good?

RSS Printer Gives You The Hard Copy News You Desire

The days of yore saw telex machines and dot-matrix printers with continuous feed paper churning out data in hardcopy form in offices around the world. [Jan Derogee] wanted a bit of that old-school charm, and set about building a RSS news printer using a venerable old printer in his possession.

The build relies on an ESP8266, with the WiFi-enabled microcontroller readily capable of jumping online and querying RSS feeds for content. It scrapes the XML files for title, description, and publication date information, and formats this for output to the printer. The microcontroller then spits out the data over a Commodore serial interface to a Brother HR-5C printer. Unlike dot-matrix printers of its contemporary era, the HR-5C is a thermal printer. Once loaded up with a roll of the appropriate paper, it can print continuously without requiring any hard-to-source ink ribbons.

Armed with a continuous supply of wireless internet and 210 mm rolls of thermal printer paper, [Jan]’s system should provide news summaries to him for years to come. We’ve seen similar retro news ticker projects before, too. Video after the break.

JK Rowling: Complete set of rare signed Harry Potter books fail to sell at charity auction

A set of first edition Harry Potter books signed by JK Rowling failed to sell at auction last week. On July 13, a Christie’s Valuable Books and Manuscripts auction in London presented a complete set of Harry Potter books, each of which were signed or inscribed by the author herself.

The extraordinary set was offered to the auction by Livraria Lello, a Portuguese bookshop dubbed ‘the most beautiful bookstore in the world’, with a portion of the proceeds going to Gloucestershire-raised Rowling‘s charity, the Lumos Foundation. It included an ultra-rare hardback first edition, first impression of the first instalment in the hugely popular series, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone‘, complete with the ‘wand’ error on page 53 and the misspelling of ‘Philosopher’s’ on its back cover – the first version of its kind to go on sale in seven years.

Published over the course of a decade, from 1997 to 2007, the set of seven books were anticipated to fetch £100,000 to £150,000 at auction. Despite first editions of the first book selling for a fair amount of money in recent times, this particular set went unsold.

Just seven months ago, in December 2021, a first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone sold for over £356,000 at auction, whilst a signed first edition of the first book fetched over £220,000 at auction in June of this year, mere weeks before this ill-fated set went up for auction. The charity the sale of the books was hoped to support, Lumos, named after the light spell in Harry Potter, was founded by Rowling in 2005 to shed light on the root causes of family separation across the world, including poverty, conflict, and discrimination.

Families in Kenya, Moldova, Haiti, Jordan, Panama, and Colombia are supported by the charity. Lumos has pivoted its work in Ukraine and Moldova to reach vulnerable families caught up in the Ukraine crisis and provide them with food, medicine and hygiene supplies, in addition to reaching children with learning materials and psychosocial support.

This is not the first blow Rowling has been dealt recently, as it was announced that the sport of Quidditch will have its name changed to Quadball to distance it from the controversial author. Two reasons have been cited for the name change by three Quidditch organisations – the loss of ‘sponsorship and broadcast opportunities’ due to Warner Bros owning the copyright to the sport’s name, and Rowling’s ‘anti-trans positions’.

Due to this change, the organisations associated with the sport will be changing their names, too. Major League Quidditch and US Quidditch will now respectively be known as Major League Quadball and US Quadball. In the near future, it is anticipated that the International Quidditch Association will also be changing its name

The executive director of US Quadball, Mary Kimball, said in a statement reported by The Guardian: “In less than 20 years, our sport has grown from a few dozen college students in rural Vermont to a global phenomenon with thousands of players, semi-pro leagues and international championships. Our organizations are committed to continuing to push quadball forward.”

The sport’s new name, Quadball, refers to the number of balls on the field during games, as well as the number of player positions. 2005 was the year the once-fictional game was adapted into a real life sport and now 600 teams across the world play the sport in 40 different countries.

Another Behind-the-Scenes Look at ‘Nope’ Shot with IMAX Cameras

Another Behind-the-Scenes Look at ‘Nope’ Shot with IMAX Cameras

“It’s a bigger adventure than I’ve ever tried to tell.” Universal has debuted yet another intriguing behind-the-scenes featurette for Jordan Peele’s movie Nope, following the other “Cinematic Event” featurette from a few weeks ago. This one focuses on the crew involved in pulling off this epic sci-fi spectacle, including a look at the IMAX (and 65mm) cameras they used to film this movie. As everyone knows from Christopher Nolan’s movies, IMAX cameras a much bigger and much more cumbersome, and require entirely different rigs. Nope’s cast features Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Barbie Ferreira, Michael Wincott, Donna Mills, and Terry Notary. The final trailer for Nope was also released a few weeks ago, but I know many are trying to steer clear of any spoilers or details about this before going in to watch. Peele has been working with DP Hoyte Van Hoytema, who has worked on Nolan movies before, and I can’t wait to see what they’ve put together for this. I really enjoy seeing a featurette entirely focused on the camera team.

Here’s the “It Takes a Village” featurette for Jordan Peele’s Nope, direct from Universal’s YouTube:

You can rewatch the first official trailer for Jordan Peele’s Nope here, or the second official trailer here.

For more clues + updates on Nope’s release, visit @Nope_Movie on Twitter or @nopemovie on IG.

The film reunites Jordan Peele with Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya, who is joined by Keke Palmer and Oscar nominee Steven Yeun as residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. Nope is both written and directed by American actor / comedian / writer / producer / filmmaker Jordan Peele, director of the films Get Out and Us previously, as well as a producer on Keanu, Candyman, and BlacKkKlansman; and he’s a producer on the TV series “The Twilight Zone”, “Lovecraft Country”, and “The Last O.G.” as well. It’s produced by Ian Cooper and Jordan Peele. Featuring cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema, and music by Michael Abels. Universal will release Peele’s Nope in movie theaters nationwide starting July 22nd, 2022 coming up this summer. Who’s ready to watch this?

The Sonic 2 movie has reportedly topped the original’s US opening | VGC

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is reportedly on course to top the first movie’s opening weekend in the US.

According to Deadline’s sources, the paramount and Sega sequel made $23 – $26m on Friday (including $6.25m from previews), and is now on course to gross $60m – $65m during its opening weekend.

That’s higher than the $58m 3-day opening of the original movie, and when combined with overseas revenue (Sonic 2 opened a week early in Europe, Australia and other markets) it’s likely to have topped $100m globally.

Last week Sonic 2 was No. 1 in markets such as the UK ($6.4M), France ($5.7M), Australia ($2.8M), Spain ($2.2M/339) and Germany ($2.1M/). Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria, Norway, Belgium, New Zealand, Slovakia and South Africa all also saw No. 1 starts.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog was a surprise success, with it becoming the top-grossing video game adaptation of all time in the US. paramount Pictures and Sega revealed in February that a third Sonic film and a live-action TV series have entered production.

Toby Ascher, who was a producer on 2020’s Sonic film and the upcoming sequel, commented on plans for a “Sonic cinematic universe” in production notes released to coincide with the lifting of the Sonic 2 review embargo.

“We’re creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world,” he said.

VGC’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie review called it a much better film than the original and said there’s a pleasant surprise to be found in the chemistry between its new characters.
