The Billboard Hot 100 just got a whole lot hotter. The charts for the week of September 4, 2021 have two Eurovision winners in the Top 30.

Eurovision 2021 winners Måneskin have hit #29 with their 2017 cover of “Beggin’”, while Eurovision 2019 winner Duncan Laurence is at #30 with his Eurovision song “Arcade”.

This is the first time back to back Eurovision winners have been in the US Top 40 at the same time. Please pause to process that.

Måneskin crack Top 30 on Billboard charts with “Beggin’”

The band first performed the song in 2017 while they were competing on the eleventh season of X Factor Italia. They never released it as a single, but it managed to hit #39 on the Italian Singles Chart anyway and a year later FIMI certified it as a gold record.

Måneskin’s cover is appearing on the Billboard charts for a ninth week, having jumped to its new peak from #42 last week.

“Beggin’” was popularised in 1967 by the American Franki Valli and his band The Four Seasons. The lyrics recount a man who has lost his lady through his own bad deeds and he’s regretting it bad. “I need you to understand that I tried so hard to be your man/ The kindo f man you want in the end/ only then can I begin to live again.”

The song was subsequently reworked by the likes of  French DJ Pilooski and Norwegian hip-hop group Madcon. Musical theatre buffs may recognise the song from the Broadway musical Jersey Boys, which is about the Four Seasons.

Duncan Laurence’s Eurovision winner “Arcade” reaches #30

After its debut at No.100 back in April, “Arcade” has now reached a peak of #30. The song has sat in the American charts for twenty weeks now and has climbed from #38 last week.

The song has spent 19 weeks in the Hot 100, slowly working its way up the ranking. It’s evidence of the continuing popularity of “Arcade”, with audiences relating to the heartbreak anthem. The song previously received a boost from its use in Harry Potter TikTok memes, and a performance on the Ellen DeGeneres show.

Earlier this month, Duncan celebrated “Arcade” achieving Platinum certification in the United States and the song reaching the top ten for US radio play.

While Eurovision songs are frequently found in the charts around Europe, it’s a different story in the United States.

The last Eurovision winner to chart in the Hot 100 was Brotherhood of Man with their song “Kisses for Me”. It peaked at No.27 in 1976 and spent 11 weeks on the chart.

Two years before that, ABBA’s iconic song “Waterloo” spent 17 weeks on the Hot 100, with a peak of No.6.

A little more recently, the last Eurovision song to chart on the Hot 100 was Gina G’s “Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit”. The song was the UK’s entry in Eurovision 1996, where it placed eighth.

In November 1996, the hi-NRG bop was released in the United States. It was a hit, spending 30 weeks on the chart and peaking at No.12.
