If your child knows what it means to be a “Gleek,” likes to put on shows in your living room or belt out the newest movie theme or show tune, you will be glad to know that you can send your future star to an acting camp for kids this summer.
There’s an acting camp or music camp for every kid and in most areas of the country, though the majority are clustered in New York and Los Angeles, reflecting their closeness to the bulk of paying show business gigs. A summer music camp is an excellent option if your child has outgrown the school choir and has visions of Broadway musicals dancing through their head. An acting summer camp hones stage craft and offers the opportunity to “tread the boards” with like minded pals.
Providing programs for kids from their tweens and into their teens, these camps provide a supportive environment for potential Lea Michelles (Glee) or Robert Downeys. Spending a week or two developing their inner movie star is a better summertime occupation than sleeping late and playing video games. An extra benefit is the opportunity to form long term friendships with other performing arts lovers.
The camps’ curricula range between beginning acting for young kids to practical introductions to acting for TV and movies. Many have space for every age and every degree of experience or goal. Although some camps do bring in professionals to teach and to share real world experiences with the kids, just a few are created to be direct stepping stones to work in Hollywood or on Broadway.
Although campers build their self-esteem and skills both on-stage and in-life their lessons are not limited to performing. In addition , they learn about costuming, directing, movement, set design, sound effects and music. They may even have the ability to talk with casting directors and agents about the basics of show business, including how to locate an agent; what makes a good headshot and how to write a resume that sells.
The last event for these camps is usually the end of program performance, which is put on for family and friends and highlights the growth of the campers. The intensive days of study, rehearsal and skill building all come to fruition during a brief musical developed by the campers or a play planned, written and performed with the joy of self and group expression.
Whether a summer acting or music camp is supposed to open casting doors instantly or just to develop skills and self-confidence, they are an excellent way to get some good material for the popular essay assignment – what I did on my summer vacation!
