GreenCine is a smaller and less known online dvd rental service. Their aim is to capture a smaller and somewhat niche part of the online dvd rental market. They do several different things to make them standout from the major competitors of Netflix and Blockbuster.
First, their focus of available movies is cult and independent. They want to be at the leading edge of independent titles and cult classics. Movies that are from festivals or obscure classics that are hard to find. This makes them a leader in this field and if you are person who loves cult and independent films you are more than likely going to choose GreenCine over the larger competitors.
Second, they are developing a community. GreenCine’s site offers discussion boards and forums to talk about films. This helps when dealing with films that usually spread by word of mouth. For GreenCine, this aids the niche business that they are running. A community is a place to meet and discuss a common topic. They are less likely to leave the community. Also, members can find movies with the help of other members. The reviews are from the heart of movie lovers and because of this they are trusted. A movie that is recommend by popular members will more than likely create additional revenue from that one title for GreenCine. The community is an investment for continuing business. The core group will always be generating revenue for GreenCine.
Third is the price they can charge for the niche. The cost plans from GreenCine start at $9.95/month for one dvd at a time. Compare this with the low end plan from Netflix which is $4.99 per month and you get two dvds at a time. The high end plan from GreenCine is $49.95 per month for eight dvds at a time. This is truly high end for independent movie watchers.
Fourth is the idea a “quick return.” This allows members to say the most recent selection is in the mail so send me the next one from my list. This aids with the fact average delivery time for GreenCine is 2 to 4 days. This is twice as long as the major competitors Blockbuster and Netfix that state 1 to 2 day ship times. This option is not offered by Netflix and Blockbuster. Furthermore, GreenCine ships on Saturday, which is not done by Netflix or Blockbuster.
GreenCine’s name is almost an indication of the company’s social stance. Green could be seen for standing for their position for giving back. They sponsor film events and donate different monies to ensure a thriving independent movie industry.
GreenCine call themselves the “film addicts website.” This is back their community focus and niche of independent and cult classics rentals. There are far left of their competitors and their members are seemingly joining something more than just a place to get online dvd rentals.
