As to be expected Where the Wild Things are dominated the box office this weekend. There was little doubt that this adorable and moving childrens movie would have people flocking to the theaters. But what may be surprising is that Law Abiding Citizen took second place. This movie was definitely one for the guys with plenty action and crime drama to go around, but over all the plot just seemed too unrealistic to strike a chord with viewers…but the box office proved that theory wrong. Paranormal Activity continues to do well in the box office and is considered to be one of the scariest and most realistic ghost movies you’ll see this year and maybe even any year, and for an independent film that is certainly high praise. Couples Retreat dropped to fourth this week but still made a good return at the box office perhaps because it remains the token chick flick/date movie. The top five is rounded out by The Stepfather. This weekend may have been the first time in quite a while that all of the opening movies appeared in the top five. Perhaps this is a sign of good things to come.

Where the Wild Things Are

If you have children, know children or perhaps were a child yourself then you have probably heard of this book. Well now the beloved book is coming to life on the big screen in a big way. The movie follows the same story as the book, where Max after being sent to bed for misbehaving imagines that he sails away to an island full of monsters. The monsters love Max and they make him their king, and even though things are perfect, Max eventually longs to be home with his family. This movie is filled with emotion and will certainly strike a chord with children though it may be somewhat lacking the comedic moments that holds their attention.

Law Abiding Citizens

This movie stars Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. It seems like one of those typical crime dramas with good guy against bad guy, except bad guy is already behind bars. In this film the criminal still has massive control over the city and uses that to wreck havoc that said good guy tries to stop. This could have been done in a realistic manner as there are plenty of criminals that could still have followers and power behind bars…but this movie is not going in that direction. There is little realistic or believable about the way this movie plays out and by the end, it just seems to get worse.

The Stepfather

This is a remake of the movie that gave Terry O’Quinn (Lost) his big break. All that can be said is that Dylan Walsh has some very very big shoes to fill. The movie tells about Michael who comes home from military school to find his mother happily in love with her boyfriend. Michael feels that something is not quite right with the man and goes on a quest to find out, but it seems that his soon to be stepfather is very good at keeping secrets. After all the man has been trying to create the perfect family for a very long time and whenever his current family isn’t perfect…well he has ways of starting over again.

New York, I Love You

This movie is only coming out to a limited release this weekend but those of you with theaters showing it, you might just want to stop in. Though it features 11 different short (really short) love stories, it has a small sense of charm to it. You get to see the wide range of people that call New York home and have a few aww moments mixed in. For those of you who are Shia Labeouf or Natalie Portman fans, you’ll seen bits of them in this movie. It’s sweet but not perfect and you might get annoyed at not really getting entranced by one full love story, but it has it’s own strengths if you are just willing to look for them.
